FYI - This is not the best movie theater in the state, but this is the best cheap movie theater in the state. Seriously, the tickets are $2! And not to mention only a buck on Tuesdays. How do you beat that? You might be thinking the theater is run down and divey, but they recently renovated it with new seating, new paint, digital projectors, new sound system, the works. And it has paid off nicely. Yes, it isn't an AMC or a Marcus theater and you don't get some of those frills here, but there you will be paying $8-12 bucks a show. This theater can stand on its own. The concessions are well priced and actually taste good, the seating is really comfortable with ample leg room, staff are very friendly and hard working, and there is a nice amount of movie choices throughout the week. The theater only has two theaters, but they are long and large and can fit a lot of people. If you have read my reviews for a while now, you know I like to live like I'm rich but not spend like I'm rich. This place is the best of both worlds. A good use of two bucks! read more

We came here to see Downton Abbey for matinee. It doesn't matter whether matinee or later showing since flat price. On Tuesday, it was $2 instead of $3. Remember cash only for tickets, but you can use credit card for concession stand. Inside the theater, it is cold so just remember to wear your coat. Otherwise, sound and visual were fine as well as cleanliness. If you miss the first showing of film, then be sure to check out this place. read more

It's decent for $2 and what you should expect for a few bucks. You can still get a large popcorn & two large pops for $8, you would pay double that at a first run chain theater. You may have to sit around to find a decent seat. Last night I practically sat on the floor because the seat bottom was broken...and crooked It was a little disappointing that no one bothered to turn the lights on after the movie was over. The Plaza Theater - Cinema Near Me - Maplewood, Minnesota

Now that the renovations are complete, this is the perfect cheap theater. I'm not sure how they make their popcorn taste better than a regular cinema, yet we ensure that we've got stomach room for it every time. This place is much cleaner and visitor friendly than in the past. We enjoy going here to see different films and we're not too unhappy if we didn't enjoy the film. Since admission is only two dollars per person, it's alright if you hit a bomb. One must remember to have cash when visiting. There is an on-site ATM, though I've not used it (no idea of the fees). If you're seeking a cheap night out with or without the kids, catch a flick at the Plaza Maplewood. read more

Go on a date again for $20 bucks! Men.... You can once again afford to take a date to the movies, pay for popcorn and a drink for under $20! The screen is small but HEY you get what you pay for. The quality isn't horrible and you got food for your face. Shut up and enjoy. For women or cold natured folks... bring a sweater! I get cold in here... What do you do with a barren movie spot that won't put one dime into the place, and has seats that you need to be catapulted to get out of them. Second run, this place doesn't warrant the introduction of talkies. If you have to, go on tues. for a buck. I love this place! Really. I love it. Yes, it's a total sloppy dump. Many of the seats are broken. The floor will be sticky. The screen may or may not be torn and is fraying on the edges. But you know what? If you go on Tuesday, it's only $2 bucks. And if you flash your MPR member card (at any time) you get 2 tickets for the price of one. That's only a buck a piece to see a movie on the big screen on Tuesdays! Get there early, find some seats that aren't broken. Get a $2.00 tub of popcorn and $2.00 sodas. The two of you can giggle at the cheesy trashiness of the place and still see a recently released movie on the big screen for under $10 bucks. For what it is, it's not bad at all. If this place ever goes up for sale, I'd take out a second mortgage to buy it. Fix it up a bit, and spend my days watching movies! read more

I love the Plaza. it is a family owned spot with members working the counter and ticket window. Sure, the seats aren't the greatest and they don't dress the employess up like nancy boys, but for $2 a ticket and reasonable snacks, this place is as family friendly as it gets. As I drive by after work- around noonish- there are always handicapped busses taking special needs kids and adults for a day at the movies. They are very respectful of these fine folks who don't often get a chance to do the things that many of us take for granted. The only hitch is that it's a cash only place. They don't take cards and checks are now not allowed either. Give the Plaza a chance, they are sticking to their guns in a tough time and for that alone, they get my dollars. read more

I remember this place back in the day when the floors were sticky and you came out of the joint wanting to take a shower but I went in with an open mind and a few wet wipes in my pocket just in case. I was pleasantly surprised as to how nice they had cleaned the place up! I am very happy they were able to save the place and offer a discount movie theater in this neighborhood. The seats were comfortable enough, the sound was good, and I enjoyed my movie. I did not try any concessions so I can not speak to that. The one thing I found very annoying and will probably keep me from going again is some of the patrons were disrespectful. I am not talking about chewing popcorn too loudly, or crinkling a candy wrapper too long, but rather, teens running in and out of the aisles, and talking loudly. Some of the kids were fine, even telling their rude friends to sit down and be quiet but they did not listen. I went mid afternoon on a weekend so I bet its even worse in the evening. If I owned this theater, I would actually have someone sit in each movie to monitor this. Word will get out that if you can not be quiet or respectful, you will be asked to leave and the trouble kids will eventually stop coming. Its definitely a good place to watch a movie on the big screen on the cheap before it hits the DVD land. read more

For some reason, even though I've lived in the area for over 10 years I've never visited this theater. What a mistake that was. The establishment: It is very unassuming and reminiscent of the 60's it begs for neon lights all over it. It's behind a bunch of strip malls in a busy part of St. Paul/Maplewood. The inside is nothing spectacular, there's a small ticket booth area and a small concessions area with a waiting room and access to restrooms. The building houses two theaters. Everything is spotless, like it's so clean it's unreal. It even smells clean and no we didn't go to the first movie of the day, we went to one of the last movies. Lobby area: spotless. Restrooms: spotless. Theater: Spotless. When you enter the building you purchase your tickets by the most polite and friendly employees. It looked like three people were working tonight, two lovely young women and a teen boy. All of them were helpful, polite and tried to make sure our first visit was enjoyable. We arrived very early for our movie and one of the employees helped us pass the time with a nice conversation about the upcoming movies they were getting. Our theater was everything I want a movie theater to be, quiet, clean, comfy with good picture and sound quality and dark. It was pitch black inside which allowed for a pleasant experience. The seats were comfy, they had plenty of room for wheelchairs and anyone who may require extra room. The sound was perfect, the seats were comfy and clean and the temperature was great. The best part is it's very inexpensive which makes it affordable for many people who could otherwise not go to the theater. Tickets are $2, but they have coupons on the back of cub foods receipts for buy 1 get 1 and if you're an MPR member you get the same deal. As far as i understand the MPR deal also includes the $1 Tuesday shows. Concessions are affordable and good. The popcorn wasn't excellent but for $3.50, i wasn't going to complain. I will continue to go here and support this wonderful local business. read more

I like it! It had gotten pretty sad awhile back, and while I wish that the family that ran it could've hung on to it, the new owners have done a good job of spiffing it up. Projection quality is great, seats are comfy, goodies reasonable, staff cool. They do a good job of picking up worthy films too. I don't like the way they brutally yank one from lingering movie-mind with a blast of hospital ER lighting when the movie is over. I often linger with credits and I wish they would invest in a dimmer. The theaters themselves feel vaguely bomb-shelterish. But hey, that way I feel safe, you know, just in case there's an air raid. The surrounding ghost mall is dang eerie, and truly unsettling if you've just come from some post-apocalyptic flick. I am certain there are many zombies in the shuttered nearby mall. Maaaaaanyyyyy........ And the general neighborhood is, well-- if you live in some posh burb you might be a bit twitchy (not justifiably, I might add). But that's part of why I like it, keeps the posh riff-raff out. read more

The place is clean, updated, and you don't have to worry about catching something from the old skanky seats anymore!
