This place has hands down become my favorite sushi restaurant in Austin. I was ordering delivery and pick-up during the first months of Covid quarantine, and as promised in my last review it was the first restaurant I dined in at. They are being much safer than everyone else with temperature checks and contact tracing. Of course, it's better to not do dine-in at all. But they do it as safely as possible. Going in to the restaurant ruined me for delivery. Now I want to do AYCE all the time as it's the same price as the 3 rolls I was ordering anyway. Craving sushi? Here's the place! I have been going to Tsukimi for a while and consistency whenever I get that itch for sushi, can't beat an all you can eat style when everything comes out so fresh! Atmosphere: The overall vibe is a nice modern style restaurant, there's a good view of the chef's cooking in a wide space in the back so you get to see all the fresh creation that they make. Food: As mentioned above I've been here mostly for the sushi buffet. Often times when we think buffet, we expect a certain level of quality of the food, especially when it comes to sushi. However, in the case of Tsukimi all the food tastes pretty fresh, as if they were made by order. The buffet does limit the amount of certain more fresh items you can get such as Salmon Fat, however to me this didn't derive my experience since the amount that I was allowed to get was plenty to get my fill. The sushi/sashmi all taste well done and have that proper savory taste that well prepped fish does. Highly recommend any of the limited items. Service: Consistency service has always been friendly and very attentive. Every time I've gone servers will check on me to take any orders I need and help me should I have any questions on the buffet menu. This place is pretty solid. Good quality fish for AYCE sushi. For lunch AYCE ($25) they just had rolls. Food: Their poke appetizer was quite tangy. Cucumber had a bit too much sugar. Gyozas were freshly fried. Edamame was good. Rolls were either decent or a big miss. One was very mustardy and their sauces in general were just overpowering. Tempura rolls were good but the deep fried ones were pretty devastating, so be careful with ordering too many of those. I like the Longhorn fried one. The rainbow roll was a good classic for a fresh roll. Their double salmon/tuna had a strange flavored sauce. The place itself is nice except that it was quite freezing, so bring a jacket. Plenty of parking and a nice pond near by to walk off the belly full of rice. It's even friendly for non-seafood lovers. I've passed by this place along I-35 a lot and actually had it bookmarked for a while but never actually stopped by until now. One of our friends mentioned they now do AYCE, which I don't believe was part of their business model until more recently. I think that transition to AYCE helps Tsukimi retain qualities that make their sushi great - the fish quality is great, the presentation is beautiful and the rice ratio on the nigiri feels normal, not like other places that try to stuff extra as filler. Even the rice on the rolls is on the leaner side so that you can actually enjoy the rolls instead of wondering if its worth ordering. Personally I really liked the fatty salmon, jumbo scallop and the beef nigiri but they also have some options I don't see frequently on an AYCE - sea bass and flounder specifically. And if all that isn't enough for you, they also go 4 rounds deep, so you can take your time and choose to sample stuff earlier on before really gorging yourself if you want. And if you're not super into sushi, they also have some good apps - tempura that's hot from the fryer, agedashi tofu that's umami rich and even katsus of different kinds if fish isn't your thing. So everyone will leave happy :). They're super vigilant and good about COVID protocols - they take your temp, contract tracing, etc so you'll feel safe dining. I enjoyed a Sunday dinner at home with a delivery from Tsukimi. Since I ordered some fried items, I'd recommend that the restaurant change to some ecological paper boxes instead of the current plastic for at least those items that tend to "sweat" and get soggy. That would have made my experience nearly perfect! Speaking of fried, I started with the California Egg Roll, which is basically a fried egg roll that has the ingredients of a California Roll sans rice and cucumber, but with the addition of cream cheese. It is served with a sweet and not-so-spicy Asian chili sauce, which is a good match. My mistake was not asking for the sauce on the side as to maintain its crispness. It had a good flavor, however, so it was a nice start. Next was a vegetable tempura with 5 pieces: a large, plump onion ring, a whole mushroom, then large pieces of sliced zucchini, green bell pepper, and sweet potato. The tempura batter was just right: it completely covered the pieces without being too thick. The same can be said of the shrimp tempura (4 long pieces), crunchy and tasty. The restaurant kindly met my special requests of, "no broccoli" and, "extra tempura sauce, please." Tsukimi also included a delicious seaweed salad at no cost to me. Not only was it light and flavorful, but it was the perfect foil to all of the fried food. I ordered a raw, large, fresh sea scallop sushi, which was included in the box with my order of a Volcano Roll (crabmeat, avocado, and cucumber rolled in sushi rice), then topped with spicy mayo, baked bay scallops, eel sauce, Korean sauce and masago. They definitely don't skimp on the sauces and toppings, which I actually prefer, but keep that in mind when you order. They were also generous with the ginger and wasabi which was perfect for me. Tsukimi has a large menu that not only includes fresh rolls, sushi and sashimi, but noodle dishes and entrees like katsu, teriyaki and bulgogi. We spent $180 between the 4 of us and I would had rather spent that at a high end sushi restaurant getting a few good quality sushi dishes. The ratio of rice to fish in the sushi is off, so you get filled up on rice. The fish was tasteless and did not taste like good quality. Overall all the rolls we had tasted blah . I can't believe I found out about this place until my senior year of college. Their AYCE sushi is about the same price as Sushi Junai's but far superior. Everything from the fish quality to the variety of options is better. I also love how they have more unique fish options like flounder and scallop, so you can try their offerings with little guilt. My friend and I chose to do all-you-can-eat here as our post Austin half-marathon meal. As far as AYCE sushi joints go, I thought this one was pretty decent (maybe even above average). I definitely had a better experience here than I did at Sushi Junai. We went during lunch hour and paid the dinner menu price, so we could order nigiri as well. Lunch price is $25 while the dinner is $33. Unlike some reviewers, I did not feel restricted by the time/ordering limits on the menu. At other sushi restaurants, I have run into the issue of sushi with way too much rice, super thin cuts of fish, or slow service. This was not the case here! One thing I will say is we made the fatal mistake of ordering a ton of rolls at once. Don't be like us. Half of the rolls we got were good, but the other half we had to force ourselves to finish. If I were to give this place a rating based on taste, it would be closer to a 3 star rating. The sushi is slightly better than grocery store (but of course quality sushi comes at a higher price tag). As always, I tend to find my favorite restaurants completely by accident. Only a few tables were occupied on a weekday night, but the atmosphere was inviting and lively. Our waitress was super nice and told us about the popular items on the menu. We heeded her word, and since we were in the mood for sushi anyways, ordered the Samurai boat: 6 pieces of sushi, 12 pieces of nigiri, and two rolls. We started the night with some hot sake and an order of the agedashi tofu. The tofu were cut into smaller cubes than what I've seen at other places, but it was fantastic. The tofu was perfectly crispy on the outside, fall-apart on the inside, and the broth was addicting. Out comes the boat. The presentation was impressive as the boat covered the length of the table and was equipped with lights. The size of the nigiri and sashimi was generous. The two rolls we ordered was the Rainbow and the Longhorn roll, both well made and delicious. Now, the sushi and sashimi probably changes often with this dish, so I won't go into each piece (but mostly cause I had no idea what fish I was eating the entire night). Usually, when I have an assortment of sushi at restaurants, there's usually a couple pieces that were lacking in texture and/or taste. The boat had a couple pieces of fish that I haven't had before, and all the pieces on this boat were delicious. This place definitely earned my trust in having quality sushi. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Tsukimi yet. For mid-priced sushi in Austin, I think Tsukimi is the clear winner. Nothing comes close. Their entire sushi menu is at prepandemic pricing. Fatty yellowtail nigiri is at $3 a piece, the hokkaido scallop is at $3.5, and most of their rolls are in the low 10s. It's unbelievable pricing. The quality is solid and puts them in the top 10 percent of sushi restaurants in the area. There are fancier restaurants such as Soto but from a value perspective Tsukimi wins. My tops recommendations from their nigiri menu are: 1. Fatty yellowtail 2. Red snapper 3. Sweet shrimp (ama ebi) 4. Sea bass 5. Jumbo scallop While it has been a couple years, I highly recommend the omakase. The bill runs up quite a bit (i think i paid on avg 75$/pp in 2019) but has been steller. I came here for some mommy alone time get away from it all lunch because a friend went here and said it was amazing and they didn't lie. The fish was so fresh in the sashimi bowl and humongous- that's an amazing value for the price and the presentation was absolutely beautiful. I got balloon fish appetizer but I want to go back and try their popular avocado bomb. I also got their combo seaweed and octopus salad and it was also large and beautifully presented and very reasonable in price. Left extremely disappointed and frustrated. The overall business operations, staff and even food is disorganized and VERY lacking. I counted at least 15 staff members but no one could adequately serve any of the tables. TBH the restaurant is not prepared to handle full capacity. There is also no social distancing, every table is filled. Get ready to spend 3 hours here to eat, with the majority of it waiting and looking around, making awkward eye contact with other disgruntled individuals also waiting endlessly. It was not a good experience and very unbearable. From walking in, we waited 15min to be seated without actually being told we needed to wait. We were just told to "sit." Another 15 minutes passed, the water and utensils came. Another 10 minutes, we got our menus. From there, we waited 40 minutes for the first round of food. Meanwhile, I had nothing to do but observe the staff. I have worked in restaurant so during rush times, staff should be crisp and quick.. No.. everyone was strolling, eyes glazed, all huddled up in the back waiting for something to do. Even the bus boy was wiping the table at his leisure, like there wasn't a line or people waiting to eat. Cringe. Very concerned about the operations and would not recommend anyone to dine in, for AYCE, until the restaurant gets it together. I don't have 3 hours to waste on a Saturday night for subpar sushi. *Please stop focusing on your to-go orders and focus on the people spending time dining in, to ensure they have a good experience. *Your line cooks and sushi chefs are chatting more than they are working. *There is way too much rice packed into all sushi. *Please do not use "we are training" as an excuse. Arrived at 8:55 PM, was seated almost immediately. Server was expedient in bringing all you can eat paper menu. Brought warm-enough tea and sparkling water. Filled out first course menu while beverages were being procured and submitted at @9:10 PM, ample time to utilize the all you can eat dinner time limit of 90 minutes. At 9:30 or 9:40, requested the paper menu again, to put in for second and third course. Submitted that by 9:45. Current Time is 10:10 and the only "food" items I've been given so far are a dollop of some of the shittiest fake Wasabi I've ever found. If you find mad sus sushi in a janky gas station, 5 to 1 odds say the fake Wasabi would be better than what they use here. Also I got a massive pile of pickled ginger. After 70+ minutes they still haven't even brought me the little dish to pour shoyu into for my imaginary sushi extravaganza. In Shogunate Japan, this would be just cause for a samurai to unsheath his weapon and Exquisitely cut the entire restaurant to pieces in much the same manner as one would have expected the raw fish for which he placed an order to be exquisitely cut and prepared. As it stands, they managed to dig some really miserable looking cuts of fish out of the kitchen trash right as the kitchen was closing, and then handed me a bill for $30, for 10 extraordinarily shitty looking pieces of nigiri. I ended up paying them $3.25 for the small half drunk bottle of sparkling water that they did bring me, and would have paid for the hot tea that I also ordered, except they couldn't manage to even invoice me correctly, with an extraordinarily unexplained line item for an iced green tea. If you think about going here, I would recommend intermittent fasting instead. You'll end the night much more satisfied. read more

To start off, I think I would actually rate them a 3.5 but I don't think I'll be back. We first went here a year ago and the food was great, they had an amazing variety and the experience was so great that it was worth the 40 minute drive out to do it again! However, this time around. We got there just a little after 1 and we figured they closed at 230, that gives us enough time to eat and enjoy. Before we sat down and before we got the menu, we were reminded by our server that last call for the kitchen would be around 2 and to order quickly. We understood, ordered quickly and before we even got the last thing on our first round of order, she had already handed us another sheet and told us again that last call would be happening soon and to order quickly. We got there around 1 and got our ice cream before 2 and in that time frame, we got reminded *8 times* that they'd be closing soon. Food was fine, definitely give their Katsu and udon options a try (included in AYCE) as they're delicious and very unique! Rolls were fairly inconsistent unfortunately. One that was made from one of the chefs were falling apart and covered in too much sauce but the other round made by the other chef was pretty wonderful! If you're in the area and it's before 1 or during their dinner service, maybe give this place a try! Let's start with the least best, there was a wait however, they have a sign right when you walk in explaining that they are short staffed and apologizing for any wait. (Come on y'all there's still a global pandemic going on). Now for the best, our host and waiter were absolutely the most polite people ever which was fantastic. They explained all the rules which are also clearly listed on their all you can eat page. Our waters were refilled when they got low. The food was delish and fresh. I ordered the sashimi bibimbap and my wife the caterpillar roll after some agedashi tofu. The tofu was fine, maybe with a different texture than I'm used to, but good nonetheless. The roll was super cute and my wife enjoyed it. Now let me tell you about the sashimi bibimbap. That was a GREAT dish. Its freshness was second to none, its abundance was surprising for a $16 dish and not just the lettuce, rice and other great ingredients, but also the super fresh fish melting in my mouth at every bite. Came here at lunch time on a Wednesday with a sizeable group and had no issues being seated quickly and comfortably. Their menu has a pretty wide assortment of different rolls and non sushi options. There's also quite a few lunch specials to choose from, whether you want a variety of different items in a bento box or if you want to stick to sushi. I decided to go with one of the sushi combos which all come with 4 pieces of sushi that the chef chooses, in addition to a roll of your choice. I went with the caterpillar roll since it had two of my favorite sushi ingredients, crab and wasabi mayo. The roll tasted good, but the creaminess of the avocado came through more than anything else. There was much more eel than crab, which led to a much more mild flavor overall. While the caterpillar roll wasn't quite what I expected, I still think this spot is worth checking out with the wide set of creative menu items. read more

Their location was the former Einstein's Bagels which, obviously, has been completely remodeled. They've made amazing use of the space and their furniture and decor are modern.
