The restaurant needs a bit of updating but the food was great! The server was very nice and professional. We ordered a variety of menu items and they were all good. We tried to order the japanese style crispy burger plate but it was not available. They have their own parking lot with plenty of space. Need more light in the bathroom , it's very dark!

The tsukune were so damn small for the price. Out of all the things I tried, the tsukune were the worst. The service was good, and the ambience was better than I expected. BUT they did not offer water after I finished my alcoholic drink. I had to ask for it. This place is more of a 3.5, but I rounded up.

Food was delicious, especially the rice balls with Korean seaweed and the seared ahi. The portions are small but that's what you'd expect at a restaurant that's not American. Service was very polite and quick. Ambience is 10/10. They have semi private areas where you can sit on the ground and regular tables and bar seating. Looked very authentic, was yummy, and a nice place to eat.

Our group decided to go to the place on the corner from UH that we always pass but never tried. We made a reservation 2 days in advance via phone - easy to do and go our time slot as desired. We arrived at 5:30 and there were a few open tables on the left side where we were seated. The whole right side was empty. They have a very extensive menu and drinks menu - after much pondering, we decided on the following: Yakisoba - 9/10. We were pleasantly surprised by the Yakisoba. It was served on a hot plate with egg and ginger. It had a nice flavor and was a fun dish to watch the Bonito sway in the heat. Ray Fin- 7/10. It's not too often that restaurants have Ray Fin. The flavor was light, and it wasn't too chewy. The downsides were that the portion size was small, and the flavored mayo didn't complement it too well. Shiitake Tsukune - 7/10. They were pretty good - very juicy and more than a large mouthful. The shiitake had the chinese- restaurant style aftertaste that one of my guests did not enjoy instead of the fresh light flavor. Goma Tsukune - 4/10. Sadly, this dish did not resonate with me and was my least favorite dish of the night. It was their Tsukune with a layer of goma (sesame seeds) on top. Personally, I would have preferred a goma paste or sauce instead. Teriyaki Tsukune - 9/10. Their teriyaki sauce was quite good. I was surprised that this was as good as it was. Highly recommend. Yuzu Daikon Tsukune - 7/10. This had a surprising little spicy kick to it. The yuzu flavor is very light to the point that you may not actually taste it with the daikon and nori toppings. Interesting mix of flavors that could resonate with some, but it wasn't my favorite. Eel Kamameshi- 10/10. This dish was very good. They serve it as a standard kamameeshi but also have a stock, ume, Wasabi, negi, and shoyu to add for a makeshift ochazuke to completely change the flavor profile. Very pleasant and worth the wait. Also, the serving size was pretty good. Yuzu Sake- 8/10. Light, refreshing, and pleasant to sip. Normally, I perfer Chu Hai, but this was a nice change of pace. Azuki Parfait - 9/10. A great finisher to the night. There was a scoop of vanilla and green tea ice cream, two dollops of whipped cream, sliced apples, and a scoop of Azuki. The Azuki was pretty smooth and not too oppressive. It also was not too sweet or pasty. Non-azuki eaters would enjoy this dish. Overall, it was a nice experience. I still remember the days this location was a pizza hut, and the parking lot actually looks like it hasn't been fixed since those days, sadly. But, the servers were quite attentive and gave us good service. We plan to ask for the small rooms next time we come and try their sushi, sashimi, hot plate, or hot pot options. Till next time!

Tasty but not filling

Surprisingly spacious when you walk in. Politely welcomed by the staff in traditional Japanese fashion. They have the area where you can sit on the floor like in Japan which is a nice touch, but I took my kids so we sat in a regular table. Food came out quick and kids approved. I had the fried chicken set and it was tasty but not complete filling even with the rice and miso soup. I also sampled my kids sushi and ramen and it was legit. Will return with the rest of my family since it's located right by the UH stadium and convenient parking.

close up of receipt

This is where my villain arc begins. I've always tipped 20%. But I'm about ready to stop and tip much less to restaurants that do this kind of stuff. This restaurant's receipt makes no sense at all. I'm open to anyone who is smarter than me to tell me how to make sense of these numbers. Hawaii has a 4.0% GET tax, with Honolulu County adding a 0.5% surcharge and Honolulu allows a 4.712% GET tax rate as pass through for the 0.5% surcharge (if the restaurant doesn't want to pass on the 0.5% surcharge it can charge just 4.0% or any % up to 4.712%, but realistically no retail business does this). [updated to correct %'s] Our subtotal of $95.50 is correct (there is a $5.75 alcoholic drink included in there but doesn't help make sense of anything here) - 4.712% tax on $95.50 should be $4.50 - 4.0% tax on $95.50 would be $3.82 - but the actual tax amount on receipt is $4.03, which equals a 4.22% tax rate. I don't see how $4.03 is calculated using appropriate tax rates. The subtotal plus tax is $99.53 ($95.50 + $4.03) according to the restaurant receipt, but at correct 4.712% tax of $4.50 it should be grand total of an even $100.00. The "cash" amount is $99.53 and the "non-cash" amount is $103.51. The non-cash amount is basically a 4% "credit card surcharge" but that is not disclosed anywhere on the receipt. There is a big difference between a credit card SURCHARGE and a cash DISCOUNT (and I didn't notice any disclosure on the menu or restaurant signage). The suggested tips are based off the credit card total which is after tax (a problem in itself), PLUS the 4% credit card fee (20% of $103.51 = $20.70). so tax number not making sense (I don't care that I got a 47 cent discount based off the restaurant's tax math, I want real arithmetic), and the surcharging is deceptive. I've eaten here regularly, but I'm never going back.

Yakisoba

I enjoyed Tsukeneya. My favorite dish was the eggplant and agedashi tofu - it was on a special menu, I believe. It was a little pricey but you do get more than the typical agedashi tofu serving. I also enjoyed the yakisoba though it came out last and we were so full already. Our server was really nice and at first he was attentive, but then he got busy and was absent when we needed things and/or were missing items. I don't think it was necessarily that he forgot us or was being lazy, he just had too many to tend to. There is a small lot in the back to park in but it was full so we found street parking. I'd return here.

Husband & I are staying in Waikiki on vacation and wanted to find something less tourist-y. A quick Google search for nearby Japanese food led us here. The parking is a little rough and we drove right by on accident the first time so we were a little wary. However, this little hole in the wall was a real gem! We ordered the set menu that came with 3 little dishes, rice, and a large protein; 2 types of sake, yakisoba, a chicken skewer with honey mustard sauce, and the butter mochi with vanilla ice cream. Everything was very very delicious and we were pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive it was. Lots of food, lots of flavor, not lots of cash :) the waitstaff was lovely, too. We really enjoyed this dinner!

Tsukuneya has always been one of my favorite Japanese restaurants since I was a kid. They have a huge assortment of tsukune, nabe, sushi, rolls and so many other authentic Japanese dishes. My favorites are always the tsukune (we got the shio, yuzu daikon and spicy miso) but this time we also tried the cheese one and it was AMAZING. It comes in a cheese fondue hot pot and the cheese just keeps stretching, and stretching, and stretching. Other favorites of mine include the fried cheese, fried mountain yam, and unagi kamameshi. We also tried the Paitain Ramen this time around and while i usually never order ramen at a non-ramen shop, this one was pretty good. It was nice and creamy with a good hearty broth. The inside is super Japanese-y and there's lots of parking their private lot. My only gripe was about the service. The last few times my family and I came here (pre-pandemic) the food and service were both outstanding. However, this time around, the server constantly forgot our order, hardly refilled our waters for the first half of our experience, and the food runner didn't thoroughly explain some of the dishes that needed explaining (ex. the Unagi Kamameshi was just dropped off to us, with no indication of how long to wait to allow it to cook).

Agedashe tofu
Jeff A.

One of the better value Japanese restaurants on Oahu depending what you order. The chicken skewers are tasty and cheap. You can get pretty full on those alone. The Cheese and Mushroom are the best. After 8 they have nice drink specials. $4 lychee and peach sake. The agedashi tofu is among the best I ever had including in Japan. Dinner for two with drinks for $60. Not bad. Service is excellent.

My family and I decided to come to Tsukuneya because we were in the area! I've actually been to Tsukuneya pre-covid, but that was YEARS ago so I don't really remember my experience. Anyways, I was so happy we went! It was actually a great experience! **What we ordered *Fresh Made Zaru Tofu (10/10) This in house fresh made Zaru Tofu was amazing! The tofu was super silky and it also came with this light soy sauce. The light soy sauce complimented the Zaru tofu really well! It was a combination of a lot of light flavors, I would recommend that you order this as an appetizer! *Cheese Fondu Tsukune (10/10) This cheese fondu tsukune was SUPER GOOD! They used a tare flavor tsukune and left it in this, "cheese pool". The presentation for this dish was pretty cool too! They actually give you this cute little burner so the cheese melts perfectly! (Side note: this dish pairs PERFECTLY w/ beer or umeshu) *Assorted Sashimi (8/10) This assorted sashimi dish came with hamachi, salmon, scallop, and ahi! (Unfortunately, I do not remember what the white sashimi was on the plate.) I would say the quality for the fish wasn't so bad! I personally loved the scallop it was super good! *Chicken & Vegetable Kamameshi (7/10) This kamameshi was super flavorful, but a tad bit salty! I loved all the different vegetables it came with! However, just note that if you order the kamameshi it takes 20 minutes to cook! The kamameshi sits in this cute burner by your table to cook and once it's ready the fire under the burner goes out and then you can mix away and help yourself! *Matcha Warabi Mochi & Ice cream (10/10) Everything tasted so good! You could actually taste the matcha in both the warabi and ice cream, so it was a nice combination of a bitter, sweet, and savory! *Coffee Jelly & Vanilla Ice cream (5/10) I wasn't a big fan of the jelly. It was just a little too bitter even if you were to eat it with the ice cream. *Home Made Annin Tofu (8/10) The Annin tofu reminds me of an almond float! The tofu was very smooth and silky and it wasn't overly sweet! Overall, Staff was super nice, they would always come around and check up on us! Food came in a timely manner and everything tasted really good! Super pleasant experience, I will definitely come back here again!

A friend introduced me to Tsukuneya when I first moved to Oahu two years ago. After that, it has become our go-to spot when we face the most difficult problem in humen life..."where are we going to eat?"...I could only count a "finger full" of time that it fell through, and it was time when it had A/C failure. Skewers are always tasty and not over seasoned, or too salty by their sauce. Paitan Bijin-ni Nabe is already our favorite and must order. Staffs are always attentive. Curbe appeal might look old, but inside is clean and cozy. HOWEVER, I do wish it could upgrade its A/C system soon. Ice beer helps, but it could only cool down that much.

Overall, the ramen was very good, but I want to share an important tip about their waiting system so others don't get caught off guard. When your name gets close to the top of the list, do NOT wander away. They will call your name three times, and if you're not standing there, they'll cross your name off immediately. What surprised me was that they start calling names before the current customers have even finished eating or paid their bill. I had made eye contact with the host, pointed to my name and party size, and he acknowledged me. There were still people sitting at the counter eating, and it looked like it would be another 10-15 minutes before seats opened up. I stepped away briefly and came back, only to find my name had already been crossed off the list. The party that was supposedly leaving hadn't even paid yet and was still sitting in their seats. When I explained the situation, the host simply said, "Sorry, your time passed already. I called your name three times." Their sign says they will wait 3 minutes, but in our case it felt more like they called the name three times in quick succession and then removed it. Thankfully, after some discussion, he agreed to seat us anyway. So my advice: once your name is within a couple spots of being called, stay close and pay attention. As for the food, we ordered the Oxtail Ramen (spicy) and the Cashew Pork Ramen. The ramen itself was excellent. The oxtail was tender, although it didn't have a lot of flavor on its own in the soup. They provide a separate bowl with ginger and what appeared to be a ponzu-based sauce, and the intended way to eat it is to remove the oxtail from the soup and dip it into the sauce. That definitely enhanced the flavor. The restaurant is set up with bar-style seating in a half-oval arrangement. Your party will be seated shoulder-to-shoulder, and guests will be sitting directly across from you on the other side of the counter. I'd estimate there are about 25 seats total. Service is efficient, food comes out quickly, and most customers finish and leave fairly fast. For reference, we arrived at 8:38 PM on a Tuesday with 17 people ahead of us. We were seated around 9:15 PM, our food arrived by about 9:30 PM, and we left around 10:00 PM. Overall, this would have been a 5-star experience if not for the confusion with the waiting list. The ramen is absolutely worth trying, but understanding how their queue system works will save you from a potentially frustrating experience.

For a place that usually has a line snaking out of the restaurant, I have to say this place is…read morejust... ok. It's more of a quick, "eat and go" place for those in a hurry. Food is not bad. Being in Waikiki, parking is tricky... tricky as in "non-existent."

You satisfy all my…read morecravings for soft noodles swimming in steaming broth with not one, not two, but THREE vegan ramen choices. Yay!! (They also have a cold vegan ramen) I waited until I tried all three of the warm vegan ramens to post this review. Each one has a different broth but all are topped with charred fresh vegetables that remain crisp yet melt in your mouth. Mmmmm! Love that they have eggplant and kambocha, simply brilliant! And the noodles are medium with a slight curl. They have great texture and a bouncy bite. But let's get to the broths. The first one I tried was the clear broth. It was light yet complex, fresh yet savory. The next one was the tan tan. It was creamy and nutty, rich but not gritty (like some tan tan ramens). The last one was the tomato broth, so unique and distinct. It was tangy yet sweet and aromatic. (note: they serve this with a shaker of Parmesan cheese to use as a topping, makes culinary sense, but I also don't consume dairy so passed on the topping). Now you're probably wondering which was my favorite. I don't have one. They are all different and delicious! No complaints. Only praise for three impeccably crafted dishes cooked with care. I adore that I can come back and eat whatever suits my flavor fancy. They also serve a vegan karaage. Crunchy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside but enough texture to make it feel 'meaty.' They do a great job with this dish serving it with a small salad tossed lightly with a goma-ish dressing. There is also a side sweet chili dipping sauce. I also am in love with their chips. Seems like a quirky item for a ramen menu but once you have it you realize how much sense it makes. Cut thin like air, the potatoes are cooked to golden perfection and sprinkled with Himalayan sea salt. It's a great crunchy starter before a bowl of warm sumptuous ramen and something other than your typical gyoza... Speaking of gyoza, they don't have a vegan option but my hubby tried it and always orders a side. They have options with cheese and garlic toppings too. Hubby has also tried their tonkatsu and shoyu ramen and slurped it ALL up. He was especially impressed with the shoyu ramen. All this deliciousness is enjoyed in an air-conditioned restaurant with an industrial steam-punk vibe. High and low tables accommodates seating for couples to groups. They also have a lovely lanai if you prefer eating outside. Street metered parking is easy to find, and they also have validated parking in the small lot. Junpuu is right across the Blaisdell Center so it is a great option if you're there for a fair, concert, or other event. The servers are courteous and efficient, and I give their playlist 5 plus stars. I usually find myself tapping my feet or humming along to the well-curated songs, classic and retro. If you are Gen-X you will totally understand! I came to Junpuu looking for a warm vegan ramen, I found three. And I'll keep coming back and rotating through their stellar selection of amazingly tasty noodle soups. Well, that and the karaage and chips. If you are vegan or vegetarian this is a MUST-try place. But you don't have to be to enjoy the bowls of culinary comfort that comes out of the kitchen of Junpuu.

The Good: * One of my favorite dishes is the cold chicken noodles with dipping sauce. It comes on a bed of freshly cut cucumbers & noodles if you wish. Literally is such a clean delicious dish. No one else makes this kind of dish. I highly suggest if you don't wanna eat ramen that day, but you want a good stack of noodles and protein. * The tan tan ramen is the basic good stuff that never gets old. * I have also tried the sour/spicy clear brother ramen and that was real interesting and good, but I gotta be in the mood for that one The Bad: * sometimes it's so busy! gotta wait for a table The Weird: * the menu is getting larrrrrrrrrge, screaming that the restaurant is run by Chinese really lol

Food was decent and Portion was reasonable. What I didn't like was how they kept coming up to our table and trying to take away our plate and bowl as if we were finish. Not once but 3x. Seriously, I still had ramen and char sui in my bowl. Let me finish!!!. It felt like they they were trying to rush us and mind you it wasn't busy at all. To add to it, when did they start automatically adding 15% gratitude for a party of 2. I get if its a big party but for 2 or even if by yourself is unbelievable. Save yourself the trouble and eat at another ramen spot. There is a few good ones around ala moana area or in the food court as well.

Food - so delicious. Some of the best ramen I've had. The REAL star though are their sticky ribs…read more You gotta get them. Perfectly seasoned and fall off the bone. My bf and I both got the $35 meal sets. I also ordered a frozen beer and I thought the whole thing would be a slushie but it's only the top. Anyway it was fun and delicious. Service - no complaints. Workers were nice and things went smoothly Ambiance - lots of outdoor seating. It was casual and we had no wait.

Momosan in Waikiki serves genuinely good food, and that's what makes the experience so frustrating…read more The staff was friendly and courteous, but the service was noticeably slow. The biggest issue, however, wasn't the wait it was the outdoor dining experience. Sitting on the patio felt like being dropped into Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. Every imaginable bird seemed to be there: little birds, big birds, one-legged birds, scruffy birds, sick-looking birds, and fearless "gangster" birds that stared you down and swooped in the moment food hit the table. They hopped onto empty chairs, circled the tables, and constantly tried to steal food, making it impossible to relax and enjoy the meal. I understand that outdoor seating comes with the occasional bird, but this was on another level. The restaurant should consider better bird deterrents because the constant interruptions took away from what was otherwise a very good meal. If you order takeout or sit indoors, you'll probably have a much better experience. The food is worth trying, but unless the bird situation is addressed, I wouldn't choose the outdoor seating again.
