Momosan in Waikiki serves genuinely good food, and that's what makes the experience so frustrating. The staff was friendly and courteous, but the service was noticeably slow. The biggest issue, however, wasn't the wait it was the outdoor dining experience. Sitting on the patio felt like being dropped into Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. Every imaginable bird seemed to be there: little birds, big birds, one-legged birds, scruffy birds, sick-looking birds, and fearless "gangster" birds that stared you down and swooped in the moment food hit the table. They hopped onto empty chairs, circled the tables, and constantly tried to steal food, making it impossible to relax and enjoy the meal. I understand that outdoor seating comes with the occasional bird, but this was on another level. The restaurant should consider better bird deterrents because the constant interruptions took away from what was otherwise a very good meal. If you order takeout or sit indoors, you'll probably have a much better experience. TL;DR - their frozen Kirin is Kirin beer with a slushee/kirin smoothie topper. It's not a slush all the way through. The tsukemen dipping broth was thinner than what I would normally expect from tsukemen. The poke bowl was perfect and I'd get that again. Yeah, we went to a Mirimoto restaurant on vacation. It was conveniently located, and we (correctly) assumed we'd get a quality meal. It was happy hour, so we got inexpensive drinks and appetizers. I appreciated that they had a soft shell crab bao (I assume it's easier to get soft shell in Hawaii than in NYC). The $32 lunch special of one ramen, one side, and one drink (from a subset of the menu) is convenient and more than filled me up. I don't think the bowl was any smaller than in a dinner portion. Bad service. I ordered an appetizer for my main while everybody I was with got actual entrees. Everybody in my party got their food while I waited an extra 40 minutes to get mine. We asked multiple times for somebody to check on it and everybody had finished eating by the time I got it. When brought to the attention of the manager with the ponytail instead of being apologetic for the inconvenience he said we would still have to pay for it and seemed almost speechless as if he is not properly trained on how to handle situations. Amazing service and fantastic food. I really wanted to try Ramen when I was in Hawaii and I am happy. I tried out this place. They have a pretty good happy hour. The restaurant is very small, but they have additional seating in the hallway of the hotel. They were also able to validate my parking so we got free parking just for dining there. My expectations for this place might have been a bit high coming in, but I wasn't as impressed with Momosan Ramen as I thought I would be. I dined with some friends on a Friday evening, Halloween Friday actually, but we ate pretty early, and the restaurant was not busy at all throughout our meal. The restaurant had just begun to fill as we left. That being said, our server probably only visited our table twice: once to seat us and once to collect the bill. As for the food, we got 3 of the Ramen sets that they have on their menu, which is a bowl of Ramen with a side for $24 - honestly, a great deal. For myself, I got just a bowl of the Spicy Dan Dan Ramen. While not bad, I was just left pretty unimpressed. The broth of my ramen was tasty, but not very spicy or extremely flavorful; basically, it didn't stand out in any way. As for the 3 sets, 2 were the Tonkotsu and 1 was a Spicy Kakuni Tonkotsu. All 3 bowls were fine, but again, none of the flavors really POPPED in my and my friends' opinions, though I enjoyed the Tonkotsu better than my Spicy Dan Dan. Ahead of our trip to Hawaii, as we started to compile our list of places to try, Momosan was one of the first to make the cut. Between our shared desire to finally try one of Chef Morimoto's restaurants and the relatively good things we had heard about the Momosan in New York, coming here would give us the chance to check off both at once! As such, it's not like we needed any further motivation, but we certainly got some when we saw the sign for their beer special hanging above the entrance! While plenty of restaurants in Waikiki offer outdoor seating, I like how Momosan's is set-up. Along with how their bushes and planters offer some privacy from the street, I love how their tables aren't packed together, which made for a much more relaxed vibe. Still, as appealing as that was, the menu was obviously caught our eye the most. At a glance, the menu may not appear all that extensive, but it's got a solid variety to choose from. Their eight types of ramen are the main attraction, as well as their wide selection of sake, cocktails, whiskeys, beers, and wines, but they also have a pretty good mix of appetizers, sushi rolls, sashimi, and poke bowls. However, their best offering just might be their Momosan Set ($30) where you can pair one of their ramen options with one of their appetizers/sides! -- $2 KIRIN ICHIBAN DEAL - with the purchase of food We had already planned on coming here, so this was just the cherry on top. I'm not sure if this was a limited time offer, but it's quite the deal - regardless of whether it's Hawaii or the mainland! -- MOMOSAN SET - STICKY RIBS - Twice Cooked Pork Ribs Tossed in Hoisin Chili Sauce with Cilantro and Chives Probably our favorite thing we tried. Each piece was fairly sizable and I liked how easily the meat pulled off of the bone. Plus, the sauce was great - not overly sweet and with just the right amount of kick to it. -- MOMOSAN SET - SPICY TAN-TAN RAMEN - Spicy Red Curry Broth, Miso Ground Pork, Chashu Pork, Sesame Seed, Chili Thread, Chili Oil, Cilantro, Scallion, and Ajitama Not amazing, but still pretty solid. The noodles had a nice bite, the chashu was tender and not super fatty, and the ground pork packed a punch. As for the broth, it was rich, flavorful, and not too fatty, but there wasn't all that much of it (wish there was more chashu, too). -- MOMOSAN SET - SPICY VEGAN MISO RAMEN - Spicy Miso Broth, Fried Tofu, Tomato, Sesame Seed, Chili Oil, Kale, Corn, and Scallion To be fair, this isn't my kind of ramen, but I didn't care much for this one. On the one hand, the fried tofu was great and I liked how fresh the veggies were, but these noodles didn't have the same bite to them and the broth felt rather thick (though, I did like the spiciness). -- MOMOSAN SET - KAKUNI BAO - Braised Pork Belly, Lettuce, and Dijon Mayo Ehh. The buns looked a little basic on the plate and the taste of them felt somewhat similar. While the bun itself was fine, the pork belly was inconsistent (one was fatty, the other relaly lean) and the sauce was a little bland/generic. Admittedly, had we known that there's actually a Momosan in the Bay Area (we didn't find out until my friend mentioned it after we came here), we probably would've opted to try something more specific to Hawaii instead. However, despite feeling slightly underwhelmed, we certainly don't regret coming here. The food was fine for what it is, the service/ambiance wasn't too shabby, and it's hard to argue with $2 beers in almost any circumstance. It's just that I'd much rather check off something else on my list of bookmarks or return to one of my favorites than come back to this specific Momosan when I know there's one so much closer to home. I love to eat but now that I take diabetes medication, my stomach has shrunk and I can't eat as much. I always have to take a friend that loves to eat and likes to order a lot of food so I can taste everything. Leftovers aren't always the same. We got seated right away on a Wednesday night at 5:45 pm. The sun was going down but not fast enough. The sun was in my eyes and it was outdoor seating. We got the Ramen set for $32, the tonkatsu and sticky ribs. We also ordered the soft shell bao and California roll. Everything came about the same time. The first bite of the $14 soft shell bao was good. The taste of fried soft shell crab, spicy mayo, pickled cucumber and lettuce. But it went downhill from there. The wet lettuce or wet plate made the bao go so soggy quickly it turned into a yucky wet bao bite. It was hard to appreciate the crab. Next, sticky ribs, they taste deep fried, are twice cooked and rolled or brushed with yummy hoisin sticky sauce. These were good. The waitress recommended this. Two with the combo was enough for us. I had 3 small bites. California rolls were standard. The tonkatsu soup was good enough for me. But, my husband read a great write up in the Hyatt magazine about the rich broth and chewy noodles so he was disappointed. The broth was good but a tad salty. The slices of pork were soft & chewy. I did like the texture of the noodles. We had a little bit of ramen left so it was enough for both of us. When we normally go for ramen, we will order chicken kaarage. Located at Aloha lani hotel on the Waikiki side towards the beach. We went there for a family last get together, before they started to go back to the mainland. The food is great and the atmosphere is nice, they only open until 9:00 pm, so a lot of people can just before closing wanting to have some drinks and food and was told to come earlier next time, did not hear the the customer said to the staff, but the response was shocking, so remember they close at 9:00 pm if you want to go there and they are pretty busy. The edamame was good with a lightly sea salt, added. The karage chicken was very good and it came out nice and hot with a light crisp. The sum Mai was very good and it had a Ginger garlic type topping which was different. They serve more ramen dishes, so if you want a larger pupu menu, they don't have that much selection to choose from. We also had the unagi roll; it was too much unagi sauce for my liking, otherwise, it was decent. There was really nothing that stood out for me in terms of the food. The location is nice. Wonderful experience! We arrived at Momosan, after walking along the beach, which was the perfect meal to end a day at the beach. We were seated right away, and the wait staff was super bubbly, with such a fun vibe about them. I wish I had got the names of the two staff members that assisted us because they made out experience that much better. I looked over the menu and found myself surprisingly hungry, so I decided to go with their Momosan Set, which includes a ramen and an appetizer! I chose the Tonkotsu Ramen with the Karage as my side. Fast service, piping hot, full-flavored. The karage had such a great crunch, followed by the flavor of that juicy chicken. The ramen had GREAT broth. This place is always a family favorite for so many reasons. Great menu designed by Iron Chef Morimoto. Beautiful scenery with the sounds of waves crashing next to Waikiki Beach only steps away. Open air patio in gorgeous weather with the Hawaiian breeze. The food is delicious and refined flavors with great broth in the ramens. The menu does not have a million options, but it's selective and well-thought out. You basically can opt for sushi options or ramen options with a spattering of appetizers if you choose. They added a new option of a "Ramen set" which allows you to choose one ramen and a side. Half of my group got this and it was perfect. It may not seem to be enough food, but the broth is rich so you can get filled up sooner than what your eyes would lead you to believe. The service was not anything to glow about. Little things like forgetting the limes for the water which I requested or the servers who bring your food to the table not knowing which customer ordered what are the only things I can critique.
