The service left something to be desired. Although our server was nice, he always seemed to be in a hurry to be somewhere else.... Major pet peeve of mine! When I asked the hostess to get our server she walked over to couple of servers, had a conversation with them and then walked away never to be seen again and we were left sitting for an additional 10 minutes before our server came to check on us. Love this place without a doubt, but what happened to the Don Julio margaritas? From what I understand a new vendor was brought in and Herradura tequila replaced the Don Julio. I am personally creating this review to criticize this new Herradura margarita. It is absolutely horrible. My mother and I used to plan our days around these margaritas(Don Julio) and yesterday went for our monthly dinner. We tried the herradura margaritas since it seemed to replace the Don Julio. As bad it was, I am very surprised your management increased the premium margarita from $11 to $12. Anyway, I can honestly say we will not return to dine here. The food it outstanding but our visits were late afternoon relaxation visits geared toward a more social appeal as compared to a meal. I hope in the future to see this cocktail return. read more

First off, I've eaten sushi in lots of places in town. Not all of them. Shinto, Bonsai, Samurai, Shangri-La, and Osaka. I've eaten at Kubo's and Rickshaw's in Houston also. Honestly, Tsunami is not that great. The atmosphere is amazing, and it sets up the stage for night-life eating and relaxing. However, if I were to go back to Tsunami, it would not be for the food or service, it would be for the atmosphere. As other people have said, the crowds who frequent Tsunami are...meh. You don't have to be a certain status to go eat there, but know that you are in a sushi bar that flows with trends, and Lafayette is a very trendy city. My girlfriend and I went to eat out for dinner one evening, and we decided to eat at Tsunami. One of the first things I noticed upon entering was the music-it was a bit too loud for my taste. The decorations on the wall, however, really caught my eye, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The menu is clean and orderly, with all the prices given in only dollar amounts, no cents. Raw items were also marked, and that was nice. The potstickers we ordered were less than satisfactory. Potstickers should have a slightly crispy bottom and firm meat center, and the potstickers we got honestly felt like mush. We also ordered the "Pimp Salad" with a ponzu-ginger vinaigrette, and that was really good. The cherry tomatoes added a very nice contrast. One chef made a special roll that tasted pretty good, and it had a little crunchy texture. We also ordered the Lava Roll, which was good, but not quite what I expected. The menu said that there was salmon on top, and I was expecting salmon on top arranged like a Rainbow Roll. But that wasn't the case. But it was alright, because it was still a good roll. Then, the sushi we ordered was made. This was the part that really, really irked me. The sushi we received was almost a bit warmer than room temperature. We were sitting at the sushi bar, and sushi should be cold, not warm. The colder it is means the fresher it tastes and feels. And the chef who made it garnished each piece with a slice of lemon. Granted, it looked nice, but for the fish that had a light flavor, ALL I TASTED WAS LEMON, NO FISH. Flounder, Yellowtail, Red Snapper, ALL TASTED LIKE LEMON. Oh man it bothered me alot because I mostly eat sushi, not rolls. And that was something I didn't expect to experience. All in all, good things were the Pimp Salad and Lava Roll, and the bad things I'm not going to mention again. I think I'll spend my money at other places that have a bit higher quality and lower prices. read more

Seems as though Tsunami has fallen off. Our calamari appetizer was extremely over-fried (calamari was rubber and batter was a burnt). The poki bowl wasnt 'all that', though the fish was fresh. One of the better sushi places in lafayette - the cucumber roll is especially tasty. Been for lunch and dinner - is expensive but you can get two rolls for ~$15. Service is so-so, atmosphere is hip and interesting. It is much larger inside than it looks from the outside. I recommend staying away from the crunchy roll, it is not crunchy and always bland. Everything else has been quite good otherwise. Edited 5/2/2012 - I didn't know there was a specialty roll menu! One of the ladies I went with knew to ask and they (begrudgingly?) brought it out. Had some very interesting and amazing rolls. The dessert they serve here with the chocolate and ice cream is divine. For some reason the last two times I have come here the service has been exceptionally slow. You can't come here for lunch because it normally takes over an hour, the last two times it has taken almost two! Edited 9/3/2012 - I had to subtract a star. Last week is the last time I will be back to Tsunami. We know the service takes forever and make it a point to get there when it opens. We waited outside and walked in as they opened the doors. It took them 10 minutes to bring us drinks and another 20 to come back and order food. By the time they took our food order the place was full. As you can imagine the chefs are very backed up by now and it took a full hour for the sushi to come out and it wasn't up to the normal fare we get there. They open at 11AM. It is now 12:30. Don't get me wrong, I will wait for good sushi but that wait isn't what drove us away, it is the service before and after. Had they taken our order when we got there we could have had the sushi at noon and they could have turned over a table. We finished and waited... and waited... and finally went and got somebody. A nice blonde lady whom I think is either a manager or an owner got us the bill, we left at 1:15. That is two hours and 15 minutes for lunch.... and we were first in the building by a good ten minutes. That isn't the first time this has happened, Tsunami's is close to our workplace and we used to take customers there until the wait times became unbearable. Then we know to get there right at 11, but it has still taken them two hours or more every visit the last two months. The food is very good though. Just don't go if you need to be out in any decent time. read more

Our server was very good, the appetizers were ok. But I ordered a Ribeye steak medium rare and it came medium to medium well. I sent it back and did not want them to prepare another for me. The manager came to the table to tell me she took it off my bill, all good and expected. But then she explained that a pink center could be considered medium rare. No a medium rare is a warm red center. For 3 or 4 mins. she tried to convince me that medium rare has a pink center not a warm red center. that was a bit painfull. read more

came in to escape the heat and humidity. walked into a nicely air conditioned bar with stone countertops that were cool to the touch. phew! friendly bartender - who caught my look of desperate thirst and served me a draft Sapporo. was refreshing but a cold mug would've been a nice touch. i got a small snack - a couple sake nigiri and ikura (salmon roe). it was only 5pm but the seating area past the bamboo feng shui barrier already had several tables. the sushi was expensive imo $3 per piece of nigiri. the conveyor belt sushi counter i love back home gave you double for that kind of money. maybe it was because it was so hot outside , but the food didn't taste as cold as i was hoping. nor was the bombastic blast of salt and sea in each golden bubble of roe. but what do you expect from a sushi joint in louisiana? before i headed back out into the swampy sun i grabbed a small complimentary box of matches from the bar. the tiny eccentricity of the box was a nice touch. read more
