Tuckerbox has a wide selection of Turkish cuisine and the staff is always very friendly and welcoming. We love the semi formal atmosphere.

We stopped in here on a whim for lunch and I am glad we did. The hostess asked if we had reservations (we did not), apparently that is a good idea because they are normally much busier at 1pm when we arrived, but she was easily able to seat my husband and I. Honestly, I was hoping to have a soup of some type but there was none available on the menu so I opted for the chicken salad Sandwich (didn't seem a very Turkish fare), but it was good...although the Sandwich needed more chicken salad to offset the thick Texas toast; there really was very little on the Sandwich. My husband had their PLT, a sandwich that had more substance to it (there was more bacon on it than there was chicken on my sandwich)...but again, both sandwiches tasted good. To drink we tried a couple of their cocktails and while tasty and unique they were very speedy, $16 is far too much to charge for them...the price definitely prevented me from having another, and when we go back to have dinner...we probably will skip drinks (not worth $32 for two people.) Don't get me wrong, we aren't cheap people, we just want a good value...the drinks aren't that. Our server was great! He was friendly, helpful, and there when we needed him. Couldn't have asked for more from him. We did also have a hot appetizer. I forget the name of it now, it was $9 for 2, deep fried rolls (like egg rolls of a sort but with Philly dough and filled differently), these were very good...I could have eaten several, I wish I remembered what they were, but they are last on the list of hot appetizers so you can find them. read more

Being married to a Turk, I always search for Turkish places wherever we go so when we found ourselves in White River Junction VT of all places, I was shocked to see multiple Turkish-themed businesses! We visited the cafe and the home goods store so we had to round out the trifecta and come to Tuckerbox for dinner. It was a random Tuesday and I was pleased to see that it was packed! Luckily we scored a nice table outside and got to enjoy the bustling WRJ street scene as we dined. We started with some cold mezze, babaganoush and ezme. I liked both but the ezme could have been a little spicier. The lavash (which you need to order separately) was very good and the perfect vehicle for delivering the mezzes to your mouth. For an entree, we split a beyti, which is an adana kebab wrapped in lavash. My Turkish husband said it was okay...I liked it all right as well. The adana was good but the lavash was underdone and very doughy. It reminded me of undercooked crescent rolls from Pillsbury. The lavash we had with our appetizers was perfect so this was a little odd. Additionally, although the beyti was served with a yogurt, there is often a tomato sauce on top of the dough and there wasn't any tomato sauce on the dish. I get that people do things differently, but I think a tomato sauce would have added some flavor and acidity to the dish. It was fine but I think the traditional tomato sauce would have kicked it up a notch. They were out of kunefe so we passed on dessert. I think this is a good place and I liked the vibe and the service. Would definitely come back but would probably try a different dish. We will still commit to supporting Turkish businesses wherever we find them and I was happy to see so many people here enjoying their meals. read more

Overpriced and rotten lettuce. Bland box is what it should be called. Watered down sauces and lentil soup. If you want to spend $50 on falafel and rotten lettuce this is your spot! What a delightful experience. Gorgeous day, bluebird sunny, early autumn, foliage change in full bloom, and I just happened to be in WRJ to enjoy it. I could have been in Europe with the scenery and the people. Tuckerbox is next to the Junction Arts and Media locale, so the place was animated with artsy people as well as visitors and leaf peepers. Service was flawless. I had their gyro on lavash, which was superb. A cappuccino was also part of the faire. The menu looks distinct and appetizing. Definitely return. read more

NIce place and nice people that needs to upgrade their vegan and vegetarian options. I would give them 1 star for veggie offerings but I am being nice. I had a 20.00 veggie offering that was basically potato cubes in some version of a tomato sauce. It bills itself as having eggplant and carrots and mushrooms and it was like a potato sauce. So they probably made 18.00 on that meal and I got 2.00 worth of items. And seems their rice is not vegan so FYI if people care. And then they say that you should order potatoes instead of rice if you're vegan so then basically you have a potato side with a potato sauce main meal so you're basically eating potato cubes. And in this really shallow dish that is this small serving-- I really could not believe this was a main meal dish either in quantity or quality. If I go back I will order the lentil soup and salad. Visiting from Maine--I'm SO glad we found this spot on our second day of vacation. I had lamb shish kabobs and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time, easily a 10/10. This Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant is a great find in White River Junction, VT. The food was SO flavorful, and Alejandro, our waiter, added greatly to our experience. We started with a sampler app, served with bread. Tasty. Hubby had the eggplant stuffed with ground lamb, and I had the spicy Adrana (lamb) kebab. The Syrah wine was the perfect recommendation for my dish. We splurged on 2 desserts; hubby's was the baklava trio and I had the rice pudding (heavenly if you enjoy tapioca!). Hubby also tried the Turkish coffee (we'll see if he's still up at midnight ). Amazing Turkish meal, would've loved bigger portions at this price. The restaurant itself has authentic Turkish charm, with colored glass lamps and special tiling. There are two rooms of seating and all of the servers were attentive and kind. Specialty cocktails are definitely worth trying, especially the Black Sea Serpent (came with two flowers). We started with the large Turkish Meze Platter, which was supposed to be large enough for four people but would not satisfy a hungry group (we had to get another order of bread to split those two pieces). The hummus and babaganoush stood out as well-balanced favorites. The tzatziki was a bit sour-cream like, and could perhaps use some more garlic or other seasoning. It came with four grape leaves, which were savory and well seasoned, although perhaps a little soft for my liking. Bread was fantastic, although I could not see how four people could share just the one piece it came with. My main, the Lamb Meatballs, was incredibly delicious, with well-seasoned meat, sizzling off the grill. The pickled cucumber cut through the grease and the rice was also fantastic. Although we did not have a reservation, we were seated inside near a window where we watched the Amtrak train roll in across the street. The menu has several pages, and our server quickly arrived with water and to take our drink order. I choose a lavender spritz (lavender chamomile syrup, seltzer, and cream), which was smooth with a pleasant light lavender taste. My partner opted for Corinas Switchy (switchel, lime, and brazilian ginger). Our friends ordered the Caravan Saray (mazcal tequila, grand marnier, lemon juice, orange juice, and smoky spice). We opted to get several appetizers instead of entrees: the large meze platter, phyllo cheese rolls, falafel fritters, zucchini fritters, babaganoush, and lavash bread. The large meze (for 4) only is large if you plan to get entrees. It had 4 dolma, and about 4 tablespoons each of haydari, babaganoush, hummus, and ezme. The phyllo cheese rolls were a favorite of our friends, especially with the red pepper coulis. The falafel were flavored well and good with the dipping sauce. The zucchini fritters were crispy, but they tasted like the frying oil needed changing soon. We loved the babganoush enough to get a separate order of it. We would definitely order the hummus, ezme, and lavash again. My partner and I split a traditional baklava for dessert, while our friend selected a very rich tahini and helva brownie. Those were a nice finish to our appetizer dinner. The space interior of the space has lovely high ceilings, large glass windows to the street, and a variety of decor--some of it artwork for sale. My wife and I ate there the other night. What a disappointment. I had heard such great reviews and am a fan of Mediterranean food. First thing to go wrong. We were seated at a table by the window (good) but on the other side of the glass two feet away were outside diners. Hard not to watch them eat. Then, in an empty restaurant, a couple were seated directly behind me. They were so loud I couldn't hear my wife. I ordered Meze platter with a tablespoon of four bland purées and two small grape leaf yapprak sarmas. The pita was at once dry yet doughy and crumbly. Not pleasant. For my main course, I ordered Adana kebab. I've tried making this at home with no luck so I imagined a Turkish restaurant would nail it. Wrong. It resembled a flat brown sausage. It was tasteless and dry and had the consistency of overcooked hamburger meat (although it was lamb). No spices were evident. I asked the waiter for some tzatziki to help moisten the meat and he brought a thimble full of what appeared to be the liquid from the top of yoghurt. I couldn't finish the meal (which included a teaspoon of raw onion, a tablespoon of pickled cabbage and a big white dollop of "rice"). So to dessert. We shared a Baklava. The nuts tasted stale between the phyllo sheets and the syrup was probably corn not honey... to our tastebuds, anyway. I've bought better from Amazon. I don't understand why Tuckerbox has such great reviews. Perhaps, it was a bad night for the chef. read more

BEWARE!! If you like restaurants where you get good food but very small portions of it and at high prices, then you'll love Tuckerbox. Otherwise, steer clear of this place. We had lunch there this week. For 2 people, lunch came to $65 including tip. We each ordered the Doner kebab and decided to split a salad. The Doner kebab was a child's portion, not an adult's. Really small. It was tasty, but there was not a lot of it. The salad was also small. It came in a big bowl but the bowl is designed in such a way that it has a small well but a lot of area above it, so there's not a lot of actual veggies in it given the width of the bowl. If we had paid $64 and left full, we would have said OK, that was an expensive lunch but it was fine. But we were not remotely full and we grossly overpaid for what we got. Shame on the owners of this restaurant for ripping off customers like this. The joke was on Tuckerbox. Given our stay in the area, we had planned to return for several days if the food was pleasant. We were one and done and we ate at other restaurants (Elixir and Big Fatty's - both of which were better than Tuckerbox), And we LOVED Big Fatty's BBQ. Dinner at the BBQ place cost less than lunch at Tuckerbox, and it was much better (the food is really high quality there and well prepared) and there was much more of it. This wasn't a close call. Elixir was expensive but at least they delivered excellent food so overall I'd say it was worth it and we would return there sometime. Tuckerbox however offered small portions at poor value overall and was not competitive with other restaurants in the area for overall value. Stay away from this place. read more

Staying in White River Junction and both my friend who I had been skiing with and the hotel staff recommended Tuckerbox for dinner. Located on Main Street just down the block from the Hotel Tuckerbox has a bunch of storefronts that they have converted into a lovely restaurant. The style is casual with Turkish accents that create a warm atmosphere. Service was great, they fitted me in even though most of the dining room already had reservations. The dinner menu is an extensive selection of Turkish favorites. For me there are so many great sounding items, from the Meze plate (assorted apps), swordfish kababs, stuffed eggplant or one of the Guvecs (casseroles). I finally decided on the Shrimp Guvec and an order of the lavash bread. After about 10 minutes my meal came out. The Shrimp Guvec is a hearty tomato casserole with eggplant, mushrooms, onions and peppers with large shrimp and some cheese beautifully presented in a fish shaped dish. The Guvec is really delicious and a great meal on a cold and snowy night. The Guvec comes with a side of rice pilaf, very mild in flavor but it works as a great add-in to the dish to give it more body. The lavash is a huge freshly baked flatbread, mild and perfect to use to sop up the extra sauce. I really enjoyed my dinner at Tuckerbox, great food, wonderful atmosphere and good service. Turkish food is excellent with plenty of flavorful choices. Tuckerbox is also open early in the day for coffee and baked goods for breakfast and a lunch menu. My wife and I really enjoyed our lunch at this restaurant. I can't remember ever having Turkish food and I have been around for a long time. The restaurant is located in a strip mall and it is very clean. The hostess and our waiter were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant itself was packed with diners even though it was well past noon. We both ordered the Döner (gyro meat) with side salad. We also ordered a Turkish round bread. The food arrived in about 15 minutes. The bread was so hot that steam was released (that's a good thing) when I broke off a piece. It was very tasty. The meal itself was also very good. The salad had a special Turkish dressing and there was a Turkish dipping sauce for the meat. Our entire experience in this restaurant was very positive. We can't wait to return for another lunch. I visited Tuckerbox recently for a late afternoon meal, and overall, the experience was disappointing despite some strengths in the food itself. The good: The restaurant was clean, had a nice ambiance, and wasn't too loud -- a comfortable setting overall. I ordered the tenderloin kebab, which was quite good -- the meat was very tender and well-seasoned. Their hummus also stood out as flavorful and smooth. You can tell there's attention to quality in the kitchen. The not-so-good: Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. From the moment we arrived, no one greeted our party -- no "hello," no "how are you," nothing. It's the small things like a simple greeting that say a lot about a place. The restaurant wasn't busy (we went around 4pm), but the service was still slow and disengaged. They checked on us only once during the meal. The portions were small-- far too small for the $40 per person we ended up spending. Honestly, I've had similar food in the Upper Valley for a much better price and with better service. Bottom line: Would I return if the service improved? Probably not. Would I recommend it to someone who values food over service? Also probably not -- unless they don't mind leaving still hungry. The host picked up her phone midway through me giving my name for the takeout order and then proceeded to type away and made me repeat myself. She then told us our food wasn't ready and didn't actually check. It was ready, I'd called it in almost an hour prior. We then walked to the bar to check there for our food and again couldn't be given the time of day. The bartender looked annoyed that she had to help us and was rude. Get out to the car with the food to find that the portions were absurdly small. I got the Shepard salad and there was maybe 3/4 cup of food in the container. It just wasn't the experience I remembered from when I went years ago. If it was just up to the flavor of the food I'd give a 5 star. But service and portions need to be up to standard as well.
