The ambiance is pleasant, with several separate dining areas, and live music in one of the rooms on Thursday nights. The chairs are not perfect - very low, so you almost feel like a child at an adults' table. The food is tasty and well prepared. The portions are perfect - not enormous and not microscopic either. Now, the service.... The proprietess is rather dour, almost rude. The welcomed us in a most unwelcoming manner. When she seated us at the table and my husband asked (with a smile on his face) whether he got a child's chair, she responded discourteously and slapped the menu down on the table. Then we ordered drinks from the only other server in the whole restaurant - possibly the son of the owners. My husbands wine arrived right away but my margarita took 20 minutes. No toasting possible. My husband almost finished his wine by the time I got my drink. So, after this long wait, you would think this margarita must be epic! Nope. Just a decent margarita. Which, at that point, was goo enough. :-) I am giving this restaurant 4 stars only because of the quality of the food, nothing else. We will not be going back. First off, a disclaimer. While old farm houses can be charming, I want and need them to be functional in the 21st century. I know this is a very personal sentiment. I have a hard time hanging my expensive and heavy wool coat on pointy little coat hooks. I find old uneven wide board floors dangerous, not charming. The service was good and attentive. Everyone was kind and welcoming. The menu was very varied and interesting, but since it was hand written on a chalkboard, it was impossible to decipher without the help and guide from a waitstaff. All dishes was just simply stated on the menu with NO description. For example, the tuna dish was simply written as Fresh Tuna, $24. That is of little to no help! How is it prepared? What are the sides and starch. How are those prepared?? It was hard to know which are apps and which are entrees. At least our waitress was honest to remark that the chalk board left a lot to be desired. While I am sure she would be happy to describe each item in details, was I supposed to take notes?? Was I supposed to recite everything she told me so that I can make an informed judgment? Worst yet, this is the ONLY chalkboard in the restaurant. I started feeling bad that I was hogging it from other diners. This system just doesn't work. My wife and I shared the Caesar Salad. The Asiago tuile on top of the greens was very pretty and tasty. While the salad was lightly dressed, it was well balanced and fresh. Not the best I have had but good enough. We shared the Shrimp and Pork shrimp rolls. A cute surprise when the waitress brought out chop sticks to use with the spring rolls. My wife thought that they were excellent. The deep fried crust was light and crunchy. Good job. I tasted the pork, but not the shrimp. Perhaps that was my palette's bias. For entree, my wife ordered the haddock and I had the duck. She also loved her haddock and I agree. The fish was cooked perfectly and nicely meaty. The crust was also light and crunchy. My duck breast was cooked mid rare, closer to medium. It was tasty and tender, except the two ends of the piece was burnt, tough and chewy. The pan was a tad too hot. My duck came with wild rice. Unfortunately, that was inedible. Totally dried out and overlooked. Someone was not paying attention in cooking AND plating. For desert, my wife order the creme brûlée and I ordered the apple crisp. My apple crisp was the highlight of my meal. Nicely balanced in sweetness and tartness. The crust was oh so flaky. My wife's creme brûlée was a disaster. For someone who rarely complains about her food, she sent it back. The custard was totally loose and the center was nearly frozen! Out waitress actually told us that this is a French version and it is supposed to be loose. French version of creme brûlée??? Isn't creme brûlée French??? My three stars should really be 2.5. Despite some very disappointment elements, we generally had a good time. The check was $130 including a $34 nice Guwrztraminer. There are just of many nice options in the area, within 30 minutes drive from Hanvoer/Lebanon. I suppose if you are coming from the way north, then you might settle here. But it is unlikely that I was make the trek again. read more

Was visiting the family earlier this year and my mom picked this place, I grew up in Hanover but never knew about it. It is a restaurant located on the first floor of a huge house (I'm assuming the family lives above) situated on a large green field. You walk in and feel the comforts of being insides someones old house. The wood floors are creaking, you are walking through low doors, the ceiling beams are lined with homemade baskets. It's pure NH :) and I love it. You sit down and they bring over the menu which has been hand written that day on a chalk board, after you make your selection it is taken away for the next table. Everyone was friendly and attentive, food was hot, fresh and flavorful. I would recommend this to anyone looking to give friends or family a true country restaurant experience. read more

We were a party of four, and had burgers and appetizers, which Camembert nearly 2 hours later. A drunken revelery was seated nearby, making the noise level obnoxious and horrendous. When I inquired as to three timing of our meal, the server, unapologetically informed me that the kit haas simply busy. No contrition, no sense of customer relations. Quite simply the finest restaurant in New Hampshire. Jim Peyton, the chef, is easily the most talented chef in the state. He has worked in restaurants all over the world and brings an eclectic variety of food to the ever-changing menu, including New Orleans gumbo, traditional French cuisine, and Asian-inspired dumplings and soups. The setting is also superb--a charming and quirky historic New England tavern. The staff is attentive and friendly, equaling welcoming to new and old visitors alike. The food ranges from very good to heavenly. The crab cakes, chorizo dumplings, and filet of beef are particularly excellent, as is the decadently creamy vanilla ice cream. All the vegetables are locally grown and are fresh even in the heart of winter. Best of all, the prices are surprisingly reasonable for fine dining. Last time I was there, appetizers were between $8 and $15, entrees between $18 and $35. I have had the good fortune of dining in fine restaurants all over the world--including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Morocco, France, Spain, and Italy. I have been to no better restaurant than Peyton Place. Worth the 30-minute drive from Hanover and even the two-hour drive up from Boston. A gem. read more

I have been going to Peyton Place ever since they were in Bradford. The food is excellent but if you plan on going don't plan to have your meal in less than 2 hours. Suggestion, pack a cheat sheet of stuff to talk about for the long, long wait. I must agree to some extent with the other reviewer on the "charm" issue. It is ALWAYS a bad sigh when the wait staff opens a conversation with how overworked the chef is and there will be a delay.....yikes. I have never had a bad meal there, service glacially slow but if you have good conversation, good wine and fine cocktails it matters less. If the eclectic chairs were more comfortable perhaps the time would not matter as much. read more

Beautiful setting in the historic Mann Tavern. Inside is candle lit and very romantic. The service is quite attentive. Wine list is a bit on the short side. The menu is extensive, focusing on fresh local ingredients. The food was good but fell a bit short of excellent. I had veal and it was a bit too tough. We live in Charleston SC and are staying in Norwich to attend a baking class at King Arthur flour. PP was recommended by a local. It was a a comfortable drive out of town and we looked forward to what was described as something a bit "out of the ordinary." We were not disappointed. We have traveled and eaten our way around the world (literally) and we both cook and bake, so it's not easy to find a place that we absolutely are content. Yes, it's an old house and yes the menu is hand printed on a chalk board. Part of the fun was chatting to Heidi to learn how each dish was prepared and to hear her heart and soul flow from the menu. Such a changing eclectic menu, prepared from scratch each night would be hard to put on paper. The wine list was short but well chosen and priced affordably. We had a great bottle of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for just $36. (a steal compared to Hanover or Norwich prices) We shared our two appetizers, a Lobster Feta Salad and 6 broiled oysters. The oysters were broiled with a bit a spinach and Parmesan, the delicate flavors mingled perfectly and the juicy bite slid off the shell into our mouths. I felt like a queen eating such a wonderful dish. The salad was composed of a warm mixture of fresh lobster mixed with Feta over a bed of fresh greens. It was lightly dressed with a warm house made vinaigrette. Garnished with olives, tomatoes and citrus, a wonderful way to start an evening of fine food, wine and warmth of service. I had Yellow fin Tuna and my husband chose the Cajun Haddock. His Haddock was fresh, beautifully seasoned with a light crust of Cajun spices. The fish was moist and cooked to perfection. It was served with asparagus, crisp but tender over a base of lightly scalloped potatoes. I asked for my Tuna to be medium rare and that's exactly how it came, Seasoned with a bit of garlic and basil, and a light crumb topping, a wonderful and fresh dish. Served over moist wild rice and with a side of broccolini. Having lingered with our wine and meals for more than an hour, we never felt rushed and service was attentive, and warm but unobtrusive. The table setting was European style, laid out so that each course had its own implements. Even though the other patrons had left, we were never made to feel rushed, and we then enjoyed our desserts with coffee and a fine glass of 20 year old port. I had the brownie topped with raspberry sauce and home made vanilla ice cream. My husband had a strawberry rhubarb puff pastry served with cinnamon ice cream. I'm not sure how other reviewers feel that they had small portions as I could not have eaten another bite, and my husband was similarly replete. We were there for over 2 hours and had lovely conversations with Heidi and a couple of regular patrons. It was an meal I will remember and when I return to this area, I hope to return to Peyton Place. If you want to experience your food, savor your meal and have a unique experience, you won't find a better place to do it. Our bill after ALL that with tip was less under $180. We came here for an early dinner after Dartmouth graduation, based on an enthusiastic recommendation from a local business owner in Hanover. Our food was good (I had the vegetarian ravioli) but portions were unexpectedly tiny for the price. I have a healthy appetite but my mother-in-law eats like a bird and even she commented on the small portion size. I didn't enjoy the patio seating; it was a little shabby with a less-than-inspiring view of the back of the house, which needs some maintenance work. Our table had no shade and it was a hot day so it wasn't very comfortable until the end of the meal when the sun began to set. The inside tables were probably a more pleasant dining experience. This restaurant is on Yelp twice, copying my review from the other listing: I'll go with two stars, based on how wonderful they used to be. Peyton Place began in the basement of the post office in Bradford, VT. Back then, the menu was small and excellent. They didn't have a license to sell liquor, so it was BYO beer or wine. They had wine glasses and openers, so it was still very classy. Since the move to Orford, the quality of the service and food has really been compromised. The portions used to be sized perfectly, just right. You didn't mind that they were a little expensive, because you were getting an outrageously delicious meal and the size was just right. The prices have gone waaay up, the size down and the meal itself is just 'meh" I just can't bring myself to go back. There are a lot of places in the Upper Valley where you can get a much better meal and not have to spend a lot of money. Peyton Place - go back to your roots. read more

My group of 7 close pals had a wonderful night here this past weekend. The charming, historic farmhouse with it's lowly-lit romantic dining room was the perfect setting for a leisurely wine-filled catch-up with friends; not a quick rush in-n-out bite, though owner Heidi's service was extremely attentive and considerate, taking us through the details of each menu item. And everyone's food was delicious! Particularly the chorizo dumplings starter, and halibut & chicken braciole entrees, as well as the brownie & berry puff pastry desserts. I was so hopeful, and eager to eat here and enjoy it, but alas it was not to be. I went with a small group, and was seated in beautiful, albeit horribly unsteady outdoor dining. Our round of drinks was poorly timed ( a canned beverage coming out nearly ten minutes after cocktails) but I still didn't see our tipsy table and staggered service as a sign. I should have. We optimistically ordered appetizers, which were fantastically described on the menu, and priced accordingly. The apps were acceptable but were diminished by the cheap disposable picnic-ware they were presented in. Our main courses were even worse. A sad, cold, 12$ burger sitting alone on a paper plate (because that price doesn't include a single side) and a meal that looked like yesterday's hospital cafeteria casserole with obviously frozen vegetables. I strongly urge Peyton Place to learn from this review if they want to keep up with the new restaurants in the area, and salvage their reputation. In the meantime, sit this one out. read more

After hearing the food was worthwhile, my wife and I headed up to check it out. The building is a cool converted historic farmhouse. It does have a nice atmosphere. The menu is on a portable chalkboard that they walk around and place on a stand in front of your table. The dish details are absent and it leaves you guessing about specifics. There should be half as many options. Surprisingly, they do not have any draft beers! I can drink bottled beer at home! Bummer. The chicken stew my wife had was good. The side veggie portions were so small, we needed a microscope to find them. The burger was just ok. It was advertised as the best in the upper valley. Not sure about that... Portion sizes were on the small side. I was hungry after finishing our meal. Food is overpriced. It does not fit the bill. The outdoor patio at this place is beautiful. So why the 1 star. I was having a family reunion here and contacted Heidi to reserve for their music night as recommended on their website. We discussed and she indicated they could accommodate 24 on the patio but if there was inclement weather, they would only hold 10 inside and she could not help us. I understood and said I would get a final number and we would talk Monday. By Sunday I had a firm number and the weather for the week looked good. I called to confirm and she now said She would get back to me Monday. I NEVER heard from her again until I went to the restaurant to make sure we were all set the day before. Now she claimed 24 was too large and that her integrity and quality would be jeopardized if she tried to serve that large a group. This AFTER I had invited everyone to come; and they were all coming from out of state. In my book, she has no integrity to protect. read more

We go to Peyton Place when we want a quiet, leisurely dining experience. The food is wonderful and we love the view of the Connecticut River across the corn fields. We always get the Broiled Oysters which are the best you can get anywhere. Recently I had the Lobster and Feta Salad and then the Asian Shrimp Stir Fry. Really Superb. My husband had Cherry Beet Soup and Halibut with Cherry Sauce. Unusual and delicious. It's where we go when we want to unwind, talk and catch up with one another after a hard day at work. Nothing is rushed here. The candlelight and the soft jazz in the background are very soothing. Cocktails are expertly made and the wine list is eclectic. read more
