Reserved an aluminum road bike online. Thought this was an actual bike shop... not. Received text to a self-serve storage unit to pickup the bike I reserved. No parking in storage area, only park at nearby restaurant. There was two bikes of the correct size. You need to know a bit about bike maintenance to continue. I added my own pedals for the first test ride. A pedal wrench and assorted paired pedals were located inside the roll up door's storage unit, along with tire pump, and assorted sized helmets plus disinfecting spray. First bike did not shift into small ring at all. Second bike had worn, dry rot front tire side tread with broken side strands. I used bike for three days on nearby paved trail rides. There was extra tube, levers, and CO2 in rear pack. I also brought along my patch kit and pump, just in case. Cleaned up and lubed chain, set up bike back at the Airbnb. I noticed right shifter cable was frayed upon closer inspection, but it did shift okay in the flat parking lot under no stress. There was no way to adjust seat height, thus I tilted handlebars slightly upward with my own packtool to make do. Riding hills on day two in Saguaro National Park the right shifter cable was definitely punk, requiring patience to shift. Press lever and nothing, nothing, nothing, shift. I suspect cable is frying inside the hood, but didn't inspect. It's going to be a problem for next guest, IF the bike doesn't get service. All issues immediately were reported via text a couple times plus images sent. I was offered to swap out for another unknown bike back at self-serve storage unit, but didn't wish to waste my time driving back and forth, setting up yet another bike versus riding with my friends. So, if you know a thing or two about bikes, the rental was okay, as you did not have to deal with waiting for a person to do the work. Also helped my friend get her bike ready the another day by adding pedals, cleaning the chain, pumping up tires, plus finding and adding an inner tube to her seat pack before we left storage. Really unsure how often these rentals are serviced and check. Not sure what the tip jar was for either, lol! I give a 3 of 5 as price was okay, the person did respond via text, and bike didn't totally fail, BUT I'm also a do-it-yourself-er on vacation! read more

I traveled from Chicago to Tucson and I really wanted to go on the loop but only had one free day. I made the mistake of trying to rent from this operation. There is no bike shop. It's just a storage unit and it was impossible to find. When I called and asked him for directions, he said he didn't have time to deal with me and he had a bunch of other people and he would just have to cancel my reservation. By then it was already in the afternoon and the temperature was in the 90s. Totally ruined my day. Luckily I found another place that is an actual bike shop and they sent me right up and told me where to go and everything. I was able to sneak in a ride before my flight left the next morning. Do not call this place. you are out of your mind if you try. Terrible business practice and just an awful person all around. Most of the texts are not even answered by a person but answered by AI and it's not accurate and that's why I couldn't find the storage locker in the first place. really disappointed. Do not get a bicycle from this place. Pickup is incredibly sketchy and complicated. The bike we rented from here is garbage. My partner needed to take his bike for a tune up, so we stopped by a shop. I asked if they could help me adjust my seat. They took one look at where the bike was from and immediately said that this place is garbage. No bike shops work with Tucson Bike Rentals. They said they consistently send out garbage bikes and people get hurt on them. They offered to look over my bike. 20 min later, they were still running a safety check. The wrong derailleur was on it. Something was messed up with the wheels. We decided to find a bike elsewhere and to try to get our money back from this place. It's not a safe bike or bike rental company. Also! There's no way to communicate with the company other than via text message. They say not to call. read more

Absolute worst, reserved a bike online, got confirmed reservation. There is a photo of a bike in a self service Locker on the website. Never get any contact or Instructions beyond the initial reservation email. Try to call, they only text, ok. Text them, still no instructions, ask where to pick up the bike, they tell me the lockers are located at this place across from a park, go there at the reservation time. No lockers, no bikes. Text them, they are like, why are you driving around town looking for a locker like I'm crazy. Tell Me I can't get a bike until 3 hours later and are rude about it. Short story: Poor customer service Faulty Bikes Promised Refunds but never delivered Turned the blame on the customer Long Story: We'd been renting from this company for years before Covid, great experience, great service, great bikes. Unfortunately this time it was quite different. Planned to rent the bike for multiple days as I was staying downtown and working all week so trying to get out in the mornings for early rides on the trails at Starr Pass. First bike: The first 20 minutes of my ride (on flat pavement) my chain broke, was told I'd get a refund for the day as I was staying downtown and the bike pick up was past the air force base, making it inconvenient for me to get another bike as I was working all day. Swapped it out later that evening and picked up an additional bike as another rider wanted to join a few days later and didn't want to go out of the way to pick up the other bike, so was okay paying a little bit more for the couple extra days even though we wouldn't be using the bike. Again, was happy to support the business as we had worked with them for so many years. Fast forward and not even 5 minutes on the trail and a pedal breaks on the second bike. Again, owner extremely apologetic and told a refund would be absolute. And as we were riding near the pickup/dropoff at the Tucson loop trails, it wasn't as inconvenient to swap it out, but I did lose the morning for a full ride (again the only time I had to do so) and only got out for 15 minutes to meetup and pick up the other rider who stayed out on the trails while I swapped bikes. Having good faith I rented another bike for another rider for two days and only used for one and was under the impression I'd only get charged for a day. Not the case, but no big deal, that was on me. Fast forward two weeks later, I follow up for the refund. Not only am I told I won't be getting a refund for the two days but the owner then turns the blame on me for the broken pedal, trying to say I swapped the pedal and stripped the crankshaft (which I never did) or I hit a rock biking (again, 5 minutes in on easy trail, didn't happen), and saying that he'll never give me his business again. Extremely disappointing and a 180 degree turn from what was told to me while renting the bikes. After going back and forth he suggests he'll give the refund, but at this point I'm so fed up and disappointed I need to fight for something I'm told would have been given that I no longer want the refund or anything to do with him. All of this is in in written exchange. I should have read and listened to the other reviews, but seeing as we had good experience in prior years, thought otherwise. My husband and I were able to rent two excellent road bikes for our Oro Valley bike trip. I can understand how this business gets a bad rap, and will address where changes could be made. First, the website needs cleanup. Second, the owner operates on a text-only basis (no phone calls). For many clients, this can be a deal-breaker. However, I booked in advance and got two Specialized road bikes with high-end components. The stated price is $95, however it turned out to be $110 per bike, which he needs to update on his website. As this is the only place in Tucson that is currently renting bikes, it makes sense that the prices are where they are. The bikes were picked up from a storage unit in Oro Valley. It was difficult for me to find the pickup location page on the website, and he texted me a direct link. I attached a photo of this page for reference. You can't park on-site of the storage facility, but you can park at the Holiday Inn right next door. My advice is to book early, know where you are picking up your bikes (there are two locations to choose from), and to know you will be on a text-only basis. My advice to the owner is to invest in a cleaner website and to include a pickup address in the booking confirmation, as well as a note that they will get a text with the unit number and locker code the morning/evening of pickup. He states that once you book, he will text you the storage unit number and locker code so you can retrieve your bikes, but just know you'll get that info just prior to pickup. read more

This bike rental is not to be used. You cannot expect that the bike you ask for and are promised will be available even if you reserve it far ahead of time. If there is a bike for you it will likely not be as described. I called specifically to find out what the gearing would be (coming from the flatlands and intending to bike up many hills) and was told a compact crank set on front and 10 or 11-34 on cassette. I subsequently and luckily decided to bring my own bike, but my 2 friends reserved bikes and the gearing had an 11-28 on cassette, and the bikes were not the ones they had requested and one was the wrong size. The fact that you can't pick up the bike in a shop and make sure it all fits and is as reserved is another problem. Lucky me that I brought my own bike. Made a terrible mistake reading their website and recommended my 3 ride mates rent bicycles from them. Greed is their primary motivation and you should really consider renting elsewhere. I recommended to 3 riders to rent from them for an Easter week (2020) Mt Lemmon Epic Climb. They reserved their bikes in January for an April 2 rental. Coronavirus. As soon as our governor (Maryland) recommended against travel and as soon as Arizona recommended the same thing (week of March 10), we all cancelled our trip. This cancellation was based on STATE and FEDERAL government recommendations. Guess what? Tucson Bike Tours and Rental said, "according to our contract, you can't cancel within 30 days of the rental." Really? You are so desperate to hold people's rentals to the fire even in this INTERNATIONAL crisis? We were planning on going 30 days prior!!! We were planning on going every day leading up to our cancellation!! We cancelled because IT WAS THE PATRIOTIC and RESPONSIBLE thing to do. Let me tell you, any organization that is going to stick to a contract when force majeure is so clearly indicated is a terrible business. They get to keep $300 for all 3 of the bike rentals. I was fortunate, I have a Ritchey-Break Away so I didn't need to rent a bike. However, i rented 3 mountain bikes for myself and my kids to ride after our Mt Lemmon adventure. I rented from REI Co-Op Adventure Center in Phoenix. They have a 24 hour rental cancellation!!! So, when I called, there was no issue with the cancellation. Since it is cheaper to fly into Phoenix, I bet is it possible for most of you to rent from them. REI-Co-Op has $600 per year for the next 5-6 years guaranteed because of their fair treatment. Add to that the road bike rentals that I am going to recommend to my teammates, that will be close to $900 per year for the next 5-6 years. I hope that Tuscon bikes enjoys this years $300. You aren't getting any more of our money moving forward. Short sighted business profits over longer term good business practice means that I will not rent from Tuscon Bike Tours and Rentals and will not recommend anyone as well. There appears to be no physical location other than an unstaffed bike rack in a parking lot. There is a good chance that you will never see the person you are renting from. My rental went fine -- good communication. But given the nature of the operation it is not surprising that things have not gone smoothly for others. First off, he did not want to answer his phone and only wanted to communicate through text. Already this was a red flag for my husband. But his prompt text responses kept my attention. His website is very difficult to navigate and I instead relied on his text responses for questions I had. He seems to say yes to anything you ask just to get you to agree to rent bikes from him. I asked him very specifically if he could drop a bike off for me closer to Sweetwater Preserve (which is the reason I traveled to this area) and he said he had a locker close to the location I need. He dropped the bikes off 30+ min DRIVE away from Sweetwater. I reminded him that I specified I had no way of transporting the bikes myself and I reminded him he had told me he could drop the bikes off for me at a location right by Sweetwater. He said that he dropped them off near the wash trail(which is the location that's 30+ min away from Sweetwater) and just go do that. No, that's not what we had discussed. By the way, at this point I was already charged over the phone and no receipt was given to show what was charged and no signature from me was provided. He charged my card and dropped the bikes off at some parking lot. When I tried to work something out he immediately got defensive and told me that his website clearly states what city he services(even though the website says Tucson which is where Sweetwater preserve is) and that he is not responsible on educating customers in geography. Again I'm from out of town and was expecting this business owner(I assume) that knows the area to properly guide me and be honest with where he can drop the bikes off. Don't just say yes to all my questions to get my business and then after payment not properly follow through with what you previously stated. He then told me maybe I should get an SUV so that I can carry the bikes myself, since I have a sedan. Ok, I can't even describe how absolutely rude that comment was. He was just overall rushed and not really listening to what I really wanted and needed. So I asked for a refund because I would no longer use his services and his previously prompt text responses dropped to zero. Just for reference, I was absolutely polite and never provoked such responses from this person. So I went ahead and called my bank and took care of this situation. Very disappointed with this interaction. The no contact pickup involved unlocking the bikes from where they were chained in a parking lot in Oro Valley - Not in Tucson as the name would suggest. Apparently this is a one man operation with no store front. The bicycle was a lower model than was listed on the website. Began texting Robert from the number available on the website about three days before my trip to Tucson. Great response time to my questions and we met at a public parking lot at 7:30 in the morning as scheduled. I was given an excellent instructions on where to find the trailhead which was across the street (Honeybee Trail Canyon) I met a local rider halfway into the trails and had a great 8 miles out at about a 2% grade and a thrilling 7 mile return pretty much all down the entire way. I tried to get a hold of this company and at first it seemed things would work out BUT it was no good. So difficult to order the bikes online!! So very difficult to get ahold of the gentleman that rents the bikes! It felt Very sketchy the whole time of trying to organize renting these bikes. I had my brother try and he couldn't get the website to give us the correct bikes. It kept charging us for the most expensive ones. Great web site and great communication via phone and text messaging with the owner (I assume), as I never had the opportunity to meet the gentleman. Be prepared to know that the distance between the pick-up/drop off location and Mt. Lemmon is approximately 40 min (one way). The actual pick up location is behind some mailboxes in a strip mall of businesses where you'll find one or more bikes chained to a bike stand. You'll need to text the owner, sign off on paperwork and text the information prior to receiving the code to unlock the rental bike. The Mt. Lemmon ride is amazing. Unfortunately, the older version Specialized bike created a significant wobble while descending that hampered the joy traveling from 8,000 to 2,000 elevation. Did not feel very safe. In speaking with the owner, apologizes were appreciated along with his changing out some components of this bike for future use. Perhaps this was a one time poor event. Yes, I would contact the owner if I were to return to the Tucson area in the future. These things happen. However, I would ask that the pick up and drop off location be more customer friendly and the rental bike be more closely inspected. read more

Hard to reach despite repeated voice mail messages over 3 days - when I did, I wanted to ride early Sat and Sun so I needed bike Friday - he wanted to charge me Friday too - no rental agency has ever done that to me and he eventually agreed to deliver to me Friday night @ 9 PM. Then about 8 PM, he cancelled as he was at a ball game and offered to deliver Sat morning instead which was too late for me to do the Sat ride I planned - no apology when he showed up but i took delivery and returned bike to him Sunday evening. The final insult was that he billed me for Friday anyhow and got snarky when i reminded him I only had the bike Sat/Sun, insisting I had it 3 days. Realizing it was pointless to deal with a dishonesty, I asked my credit card company Amex to address which resulted in a refund for the 3rd day he charged. To start with, the web site is deceptive. He does not deliver to Green Valley. In fact he doesn't even deliver to the south half of Tucson. I don't know Tucson very well, so accepted the location he suggested. After I paid for the rental, he changed the location again to a place in Oro Valley even further away, an hour from Green Valley. And he picked a confusing location and showed up late, didn't answer texts or phone calls when I couldn't find him. I truly can't imagine how the owner of this company has any positive reviews. It was nearly impossible to get ahold of him to make a reservation and in hindsight I wish I hadn't. I finally made a reservation for 2 mountain bikes to be delivered to our hotel. He said he would meet me early on our first day but instead dropped the bikes with the concierge under the cover of darkness the night before. When we went to pick them up, my wife's XS bike only one front chainring, the middle of three. The other two had been removed. I texted him to complain and he said that 1X drivetrains are how people want their bikes. Essentially he blew us off because he had already been paid. Removing 2 chainrings from a 3X7 drivetrain does not make it a 1X. As delivered, the fork and shock on my bike had so much pressure in them I could not budge the suspension. I was lucky to find a LBS who was kind enough to bleed them for me. They were also aware of other unhappy customers of this company. Also, beware of what parts remain on the shoddy rental from this company. My wife is a strong biker but the missing chainrings meant we were destined for flat terrain. She ended up getting a flat 6 miles from the desert trailhead and it was then that we noted that the the wheels/tubes were different. One had a Schraeder valve and rim and the other had a Presta. Of course the CO2 cartridge inflator did not match the Schraeder tube that he gave us. This made for a long walk back to our car. RENTER BEWARE! Its no wonder that he is so hesitant to answer his phone. Please look elsewhere for quality bike rentals. Beware! We had an unbelievably negative experience with this place at the end of 2019, and we are VERY seasoned travellers and rent bicycles all over. I ordered and pre-paid for road bikes before heading to Tucson over Christmas 2019 holidays. Robert claimed that it can be a busy time. I paid up-front as requested There is NO shop though from the website you are lead to think there is on. For you real road bikers, while you'd expect to be fitted and have the bike gone over carefully, in the end we were supposed to pick up the bikes from a location with an unlock code. No human contact. No adjustment. No nothing. We learned this ONLY when we were about to arrive to meet him (we thought). In disbelief, we reminded him that this was not the agreement he'd arranged. Robert became irate, cancelled our order and hung up. I tried to contact him- first to fix this, then 6 X for a refund- with NO response. It is an impressive web-site suggesting expert support and help and fitting, but all is arranged via text or WhatsAPP. He said, "looking forward to seeing you" but in the end, NO guy, NO location. Just locked bikes with an unlock code chained up. Happily, we found a wonderful local shop on E Broadway which saved us from a VERY bad experience. This was the biggest nightmare you can imagine trying to deal with this company. They couldn't even keep track of the type of bike we wanted, or the date we needed the bike. We were told they tried to call us but couldn't reach us (all cell phones keep a record if someone tried to call), so they lied to us. When we finally got a hold of what apparently is the owner, he was patronizing and rude. Then at the end, when we went to cancel this reservation, we were told we didn't even have a reservation, but we had a reservation number, and our credit card was already charged. Don't be mislead by Tucson Bike Rental's (aka: Bike Tucson's) fancy website. It's all window dressing. This company might be OK if you need a couple of bikes but look elsewhere if you want to be treated with courtesy, respect, or even have the bike(s) you request be available when you need them. Here's my experience: I had a group of people who wanted to do a ride while on time off from a conference in mid-March. In early February, more than 5 weeks in advance of the date my group wanted to ride, I talked at length with the owner of Tucson Bike Rental. He assured me he could provide 17 bikes (7 mountain, 10 road/hybrid) on the date requested, so I got commitments from my colleagues. Sixteen days before the scheduled date I told the owner I had the 17 people signed up. He informed me he couldn't provide any of the bikes and that my group of 17 was too large for him. Then he put the phone down and walked away: I could hear him talking to other people. It took several voice mails and emails before I re-connected with him again, now via email. He said had changed his policies for groups, would see if other companies could help me, and was "sorry for the inconvenience." I immediately began contacting other shops. March is "high season" for bike rentals in Tucson, so bikes were scarce. Many calls later I managed to find 8 bikes, but 9 of my group had to find something else to do with their free time. And those riding were limited to hybrid and road bikes, no mountain bikes and no off-road riding. Not what we planned. It was more than an "inconvenience" for all of us. My group, all executives and business owners, were stunned by the casual attitude and approach to business. Then once we all got to Tucson, the hits just kept on coming: The day before the planned ride Tucson Bike Rental emails that they can now provide 5 or 6 hybrids and 5 or 6 mountain bikes. That's 10-12 bikes that were suddenly available that weren't available 2 weeks earlier. The owner was apparently hoping my group would take the "extra" bikes off his hands. This astonishingly unprofessional approach says a lot about how Tucson Bike Rental/Bike Tucson operates. If the company couldn't handle my group or didn't want the business, all the owner had to do was say so. Instead, he misled me and disrupted the plans of 17 people. I called to rent a road bike for my girlfriend, and Robert and I agreed on a day and time for me to pick the bike up. The bike wasn't ready at the agreed time. When I told him that waiting until the next morning wouldn't work for me because of the heat, he disrespected me by trying to talk me out of my opinion that late morning in May in Tucson can be hot. Unbelievably the best! Robert delivered top end mountain bikes( we would know as we used to own a bike shop). We needed 4 mountain bikes including an XL to fit our 6'5" son. I had arranged my bike rental with Tucson Bike Rentals before even leaving Colorado. After flying into Tucson, I contacted Robert to arrange my bike delivery so I could ride to the top of Mt. Lemmon. Tucson Bike Rentals came through with a brand new road bike for me. Robert delivered it right to my hotel in Oro Valley. After a bit of miscommunication, we hooked up and he couldn't have been more accommodating with pedals, bike bag with CO2 cartridge, spare tube, etc. Had a great ride, and when I was done, he offered to let me use it the following day and then he would pick it up at my hotel again! Do NOT rent from this company if you are thinking of doing any serious biking (especially mountain biking). I wish that I had looked up the reviews before renting from tucsonbikes.com, and I will never rent from anyone again without checking them out thoroughly. This is a fly by night, cheap, sham of an operation. Tucsonbikes says that they meet you at the trailhead. No one met me. I rented the bike for a week and never saw a soul. They chained the bike to a tree behind a building. There was no service, no fitting the bike, no trailhead evident. There was no pickup and drop off as advertised. It was an hour round trip drive to pick up and return the bike. I noticed right away that the tires did not have good traction, and brakes seemed not right. After flipping the bike on what should have been an easy trail with the right equipment. I took it to a local bike shop in Tucson to have it checked out, and they told me that normal maintenance had NOT been being done on the bike, and that the bike was a very low end "mountain" bike, and when I told them from whom I had rented it they said that they never recommend tucsonbikes.com. I am lucky that I was not more seriously injured on their shoddy rental. read more
