My family loves Mexican food and we decided to try this restaurant because they have so many unique dishes. Our waiter was great and helped us decide on some dishes. I started with the hibiscus Agua Fresca, which was refreshing and made better by the waiter suggestion of adding lime. The chips and salsa were very fresh and delicious. For my entrée, I had the tilapia Veracruz. The fish was very crispy and the sauce was very tasty. They have the best refried beans. I also love that they make their own corn tortillas. I got to try the Carne Asada taco, which was also great. Overall, we had an awesome experience and would go back, especially if we wanted seafood. read more

Although my wife and I went during lunchtime, it took me awhile to figure out what to write about this place. First of all, the only thing I could think about is how I miss Cities (iykyk). Anyway, there was only a few folks inside so we were seated quickly and served quickly. The service was pretty good overall: the wait staff was very attentive. Regarding the food itself, my wife got the ACP with shrimp and I got the mini chimichangas with a side of beans and rice. My wife did say the shrimp was overcooked, and the rice itself was, in her words, mushy and sticky. The cheese sauce poured over it looked good from my end....I didn't get a bite of hers but she was underwhelmed with her. It did smell pretty good though. As for mines, the chimichanga were freshly prepared and fried pretty well. The chicken had flavor and wasn't overcooked so I was pleased with that. However, know that they do put peas and carrots inside their chimichangas. I've never had a chimichanga with veggies in it from any Mexican or Mexican style restaurant. It also had queso on the inside as well...the veggies weren't terrible per say...it actually added some freshness to the bite. But nonetheless, it took me a min to figure out if I liked it or not. The verdict...it was ok. They did have more veggies than chicken so take that for what its worth. Not great but not terrible. They also served white rice as well, which is something I've never had served at a Mexican restaurant before. Not knocking it, its just different from what I'm used to. Unlike my wife's, my rice tasted pretty standard and had some flavor. The beans weren't bad either. As far as everything else, there wasn't much of an ambiance inside the place. For those that remember Cities, its the exact same layout, just with decorations that let's you know it's a Mexican restaurant. Oh another thing, the menus were old and sticky. Just something that I didn't care for while looking through their regular menu. All in all I'm not sure if we'll pay them another visit anytime soon. We had never heard of this restaurant until a couple of days ago when I saw a post on Facebook recommending it. The main reason we decided to go was that they serve ceviche. We didn't even know there was a restaurant in Winston-Salem that serves ceviche! I'm originally from Japan so not being able to have fresh seafood is the saddest thing ever... Anyway, we didn't want to get our hopes up too much but we were happy to discover this place. I was especially impressed that they serve many dishes with fresh octopus (I'm sure it was previously frozen). Not many restaurants in the U.S. that I know of serve octopus, other than authentic Japanese restaurants. We started with the Guacamole de Mariscos. We had never seen guacamole with seafood before so we ordered it out of curiosity. I ordered the Ceviche Mixto and my husband ordered the Camarones Zarandeados. First of all, we were surprised by how much seafood they put in both the guacamole and the ceviche. They are definitely not shy with it. The guacamole had big chunks of shrimp and octopus which really impressed us. My ceviche was like a mountain, piled high with seafood. It was on the sweeter side which I'm not usually a fan of but it was still tasty. Most importantly, the seafood tasted fresh. I can immediately tell when it isn't and theirs wasn't fishy at all and there was no bad aftertaste. I was surprised to see some negative reviews here about their seafood because everything we ordered tasted great. We also ordered a pitcher of their house margarita. At first, we thought, "It doesn't taste that strong" but nope! I felt tipsy after my third glass. It just tasted that good! I would definitely choose this restaurant not when I'm craving Mexican food, but when I'm craving seafood. Very upscale nautical decor and a great Mexican seafood menu. They have a lot of great combos and I saw a few meals coming out and they all looked fantastic. They have a really good salsa and a great selection of hot sauces at the table. I had the chile rellenos with rice and beans and they were excellent. Next trip I plan to sample the seafood offerings. Server was attentive and checked back from time to time to make sure that everything was OK. Good place that's worth a try. read more

This relatively new Mexican restaurant has been open a little over a year now, and is upscale, colorful, bright & clean , and is rather large. The walls are a light blue and nautical items are scattered around. I ordered the Molcajete Paisa, to be accompanied by a large mug of Modelo Especial. The order took almost 25 minutes to reach the table, and was an attractive presentation. This molcajete (there are more than 5 choices) consists of carne asada, pollo, chorizo, grilled jalapeño, grilled cambray onion, salsa verde, cactus leaves, and Mexican queso fresco. There was plenty of almost everything and all were excellent, with an amazing combination of flavor, texture, and spice. In fact, this is one of the best molcajetes I've ever had. The grilled jalapeño was large, filled with pepper flavor as well as some nice heat. The grilled Cambray onions were tender with a hint of sweetness - a great item. The cactus leaves were also tender and full of flavor, grilled perfectly. The carne asada, pollo, and chorizo links were also excellent, and there were 2 large links of chorizo - the chorizo was especially flavorful! The broth was rich and filled with ground chorizo, adding yet another layer of taste and spice. The queso fresco was excellent but was not espplentiful. The beans had a great flavor but were barely warm, and the rice was white with a smattering of green peas and corn - neither item was memorable. On the table were 7 different commercial hot sauces. Some other points: The music was loud and awful. The service was excellent. I was the only non-Hispanic in the restaurant while I was there! This restaurant compares very flavorfully with my other favorites in the area - Tulum & Los Muelles - a perfect trifecta! I will, of course, be back. read more

We visited this restaurant twice. The first time, a few years ago, it was a different experience than regular Mexican restaurants. It seems like this is a place to try authentic Mexican dishes. We weren't impressed. After a couple of years we decided to give it another try. Didn't change our opinion. Here are some reasons why: 1) while some dishes are huge and meant to feed several people, the whole setup is bad. They bring you this huge dish (skillet with burners underneath) with a pile of meat and seafood and veggies under meat. Not very convenient to dig out veggies, but okay. The meats are okay, nothing that excites your palate. 2) The meat sits on this hot skillet and obviously keeps cooking, resulting in poultry (chicken, quail) being very dry (and tasteless). 3) veggies (green peppers and onions) are raw when brought out, apparently with intention of being cooked while on the skillet. The result is they're burned on the bottom and still raw on top because it was impossible to stir them. I picked some that weren't too badly burned, and they too were completely unseasoned. Just overall impression of dry, bland, burned food. We really wanted to like it, but it didn't happen. The alcoholic drinks were okay, maybe a bit weak, according to my husband (I don't drink). There may be other, individual dishes that are much better, but shareables are not good. The service was quick and fine, but we won't be back. read more

Three weary travelers made their way to Mariscos Marlin late on a Sunday evening. Upon entering the door, they were greeted with the a live band playing music. The hostess sat us down immediately, and we began perusing the menu. First up, we had some guacamole made at our table. Was it worth the price? Heck yeah, it was!!!!! The gal added some diced jalapeños which played nicely with the lime juice that that was mixed into the dish. So good! I got the Choripollo... a lovely platter with chicken, chorizo and queso and the usually accompaniment of Mexican rice and refried beens. Deeeeeeeelightful. My coworkers got some kind of yummy looking shrimp dish, but I could only look. Shellfish hurts me tum, even though I love it. If I lived closer, this place would definitely be in regular rotation. We watched all kinds of amazing platters of food coming out, some of the family style dishes were so barged. It required two people to carry them out. I have no words for what Im about to show you. Other then, Oh Snap. Alot of restaurant's, particularly seafood mexican restaurants offer a ginormous dish of seafood for your party of people. To say this is alot is an understatement, to say this is overwhelming..... yeah it is. The presentation makes it easier to approach, like a dangerous animal that knows no fury but prefers a gentle pet. Then the fun part begins, the chaos of trying to figure out what to eat. As all of this is funneling your vision into a hunger pit, the staff is bringing dishes and drinks to make sure you are having a great uninterrupted time. The ambient sound of a soccer match on a jumbo TV and the familiar country mexican music playing with its Tuba/Clarinet hitting the high notes, and here you are trying to navigate between breathing and eating. Absolutely love that this Mexican resturant specializes in seafood. Its hard to find seafood cooked this way with lots of variety to choose from. Menu is very large with a lot of the same combination plates offered in a smaller or larger portions. I enjoy getting the stone bowls filled with fish and crab legs. The spices mix very well together. The seafood guacamole is amazing! my favorite appetizer to order. Loved the seasonal watermelon margarita. Also tried the mango margarita as well and it was so good! you can definitely feel the tequila half way through! Service is really great. Very helpful with the menu and quick with service. This was my second time at Marisco's and first weekday lunch. The only down falls were that they're priced a little outside my normal lunch range with a lot of meals in the $20s and they had very few salad options. The closest thing I could find to a salad was Camarones zarandeados...a shrimp, rice, bean, and salad plate. The shrimp was absolutely perfect and maybe the best shrimp I've ever had. First time trying this restaurant. They offer several seafood dishes. My friend order caldo de camarones and some appetizer. I got the snapper which looked like a really big plate, but I guess I must have been starving because I cleaned my plate (almost took an after pic lol). It's a very spacious restaurant inside and there's also a bar area. We initially sat in the patio to enjoy a rainy afternoon. They had a mariachi band playing, and that was really fun. They have a big lunch menu with the regular Tex-Mex that I expected in a Mexican restaurant in Winston-Salem and also some of their seafood options like fish tacos. I has the Baja Tacos. Upon arriving at Mariscos Marlin at about 8 pm on a Friday, the parking lot was very full! Stepping into the restaurant is like being transported to the beach. The interior design makes you feel like you are on vacation visiting a nautical themed restaurant. The design and atmosphere were a surreal part of the experience. One major thing about the atmosphere of this restaurant is that it was very loud. We had to yell to hear each other from across the table. This may not always be the case, but after a while it became a bit overwhelming. For drinks we ordered the Los Tres Mosqueteros & a Cantarito. The Los Tres Mosqueteros were a trio of fruity tequila cocktails. They were very strong, but also had a good fruity flavor to each one. We believe the trio of flavors may fluctuate and change as they did not look exactly like the picture on the menu. As they were good smaller to average sized cocktails, $14.99 was an extremely good deal for the trio. The Cantarito was something that we had been wanting to try as it comes in a unique cup and comes with a tamarind stick. At first it was lighter and fruity, but then the tequila flavor really started to shine through! At $12.99 for this larger cocktail, this was not a bad deal either. For food, we shared the Marlin Tacos which were fish tacos that reminded us of Birria, but without the consomé. The tacos were crisp on the outside and cheesy on the inside. The meat inside did not have a fishy taste and the texture was like pulled pork. The guacamole was rave worthy and the chipotle sauce on the side was flavorful and spicy. The four tacos with guacamole were $13.99. We ordered two sides of rice for about $3 each. The sides of rice consisted of white rice with peas and corn. The rice was not dry at all and a hearty size! It serves big portion dishes and is good for party and gathering. I only wish I knew Spanish, it got a lot of dishes but not all of them have detailed description in the menu, and waitress that served our table did not speak good English (it may be different for others). We ordered Coco Loco and Molcajete Sinaloa, they are the same thing, we were fed up with the ceviche seafood mix at the end of the meal. I had heard of this place from multiple people, and I decided to give it a try and take my girlfriend out for valentine's day. Luckily we made a reservation and made it early, because this place got packed, and for good reason. To begin, the service was great, we were constantly being checked on, and everything was done for us correctly. I also will note that the portions on the food are generous compared to other places nowadays, which is great. We got the Valentine's Day Special which included a Lobster tail, bacon wrapped shrimps, rice and veggies, a glass of wine (not pictured unfortunately) and a dessert which was like a tiramisu, for $29.99... not bad! The Lobster was good as you'd expect, and the rest was yummy as well. For appetizers we had ordered the calamari, and a seafood guacamole. As a calamari lover, these were great!.. not over breaded, good flavor, and nice and crispy! I personally am not huge on avocados, yet i really enjoyed the guacamole, it was great! We also got a Seafood burrito that had shrimp, fish, and scallops. This burrito was huge! Covered in cheese, it was a very good burrito. Everything came out fast and fresh, and we really enjoyed our valentines dinner. We loved this place and plan on coming back. Highly recommend! As a warning, the place can get loud with music and even mariachi on certain days, so be prepared especially if it's busy. I went in here for a quick bite. I was really looking for a couple of fish tacos. Wow this places has a giant menu with all manner of seafood and great looking drinks and drinks combined with seafood! Definitely a place to go with a group of people that love seafood especially since they have large seafood platters meant to be shared. I also love that much of their seafood is seamed and grilled and not all fried (sorry, not a calabash fan). Would love to comeback and try some of their really amazing looking combinations, ceviches and molcajetes. However for a single person just looking for a couple of fish tacos there is not a ton of options. They have octopus, beer battered fish (tilapia), beer battered shrimp or marlin fish quesadilla tacos. Even though I knew it would be pretty rich and potentially greasy I went with their Mariscos Marlin Tacos. It was very good but yes rich and greasy. I ate about half and enjoyed the other half later. Marlin Mariscos is now open on Stratford Rd. in the former Cities Bar & Grill location. Upon entering, there is a massive TV about 15'x10' in size, which might be fun for sporting events, but not too exciting tonight with Spectrum News. The walls are blue throughout, perhaps an underwater vibe, but otherwise the walls are quite sparse. Just the random anchor, miniature life preserver and a stray fishing net that caught a few starfish. The server was friendly and made a few suggestions on the menu, starting with a whopping $200 seafood platter! That's not a typo, there are four dishes priced at $195, 200, 210 and 225 each. Fortunately they serve four people, however there were only two of us, so he moved on to some dishes priced $30-95 each. There are plenty of options priced in the low $20 range, and the back of the menu has traditional Mexican fare priced in the teens. There are some seafood dishes priced in the teens as well, but it was surprising to see several shrimp dishes priced over $40. Maybe they come with a lot of shrimp??? We ordered a Tostada Mixto, Baja Style Fish Tacos with fried cod, and Filete de Huachinango Al Ajillo con Alemendras (Red Snapper with white garlic sauce and almonds) The order had taken over 30 minutes so they brought us a complimentary Marlin Tostada. It was a warm, firm fish that packed some heat and serious flavor. Muy sabroso! Pausing as we continue to wait for our food. Lots of photos posted and review written to this point while we wait...... Oooooooohhhhhhh maaannnnnn!!! Crazy wicked good! My wife's Huachinango was a flavor bomb of garlic and tomatoes. Not sure where the almonds were in this dish, maybe ground down to blend in with the garlic, but it was amazing flavor. My fish tacos were delicate, lightly battered, great flavor and perfect homemade tortillas. The Tostada La Popis had a grilled Marlin steak, 2 pieces of fried cod, five medium sized shrimp and half an avocado. Not easy to eat, but delicious! I must say, I wasn't impressed upon walking in, nor by the decor, but the service and the food were top notch, and well worth the price. Let me open this review up by saying I miss Sunday brunch at Cities, the establishment that previously inhabited this spot. Especially those little muffins. Okay, now that I've got that commemorative moment out of the way, I can talk about what's taken its place. Mariscos Marlin isn't the first restaurant I've visited that celebrates Mexican coastal cuisine, though it seems to frequently get neglected in the States in favor of Tex-Mex and taquerias. It's a shame too. My choice for the evening was filete relleno de mariscos, a chunk of marlin stuffed with several other goodies from the sea with a cheesy chipotle sauce surrounding it. While some grilled onions and peppers might have given it an additional layer of texture, I found the flavors to be fresh and pleasing. My Sunday visit included live entertainment thanks to a mariachi band, a talented crew though the ringing of the trumpets throughout the building might have been a bit sharp for my ears. The prices were a bit sharp too, though I'm willing to pay a little extra just for something different and delicious. That said, I don't think this is the sort of eatery I'm going to visit frequently unless I snag a billion dollar lottery ticket of my own. But I'll be back to try another dish or two. read more

I ordered the camarones kora and the consistency of the shrimp was not great you could tell it was frozen due to them being very mushy . I also tried the oysters and those as well had a very fishy taste I will say the caldo de Camaron they give you as a starter is good and so is the rice and beans however the seafood is really not the best in my opinion. I would recommend you order other things on the menu such as the carne asada or even the tostada de cocktail de Camaron that was pretty good. I do enjoy the agua de pepino here that's very tasty the micheladas are okay as well they just lack some consistency. I will say there is plenty of seating in this location and they have an outdoor patio as well they also have live music on the weekends. On the recommendation of a friend who went here for dinner we decided to go as a foursome for lunch. Yelp says they are closed on Tuesday for lunch but they are open. This business probably needs to claim their Yelp and update their info. What a great lunch stop. Wasn't particularly busy but maybe because it looked closed and hours on here said closed. You walk in looking at a big TV and a lower level dining room - we were seated off to the left at a table by our request. This place has lots of booths and is pretty large inside. I also saw them handle a large group of 12 with ease. Food takes a minute - but let me tell you - it's because they are preparing it - not serving it from bins. I had the shrimp chimichanga with rice and beans - $9.50 for lunch. Same price - you pick the meat. First thing I tried was the beans - I don't even normally like the beans at a Mexican restaurant but these beans were the best thing I ever had and I immediately was like oh my God and took another bite or two - great to dip a chip in too. Their chips are delicious- not sure if they make them - but they were warm and fresh - their salsa is delicious too. Rice was also good - has peas and corn on it and is white and not mixed with salsa. Chimichanga was fluffy and big - filled with guacamole on top - it stayed fluffy even after cutting it to eat. I noticed we all cleaned our plates of everything - except the boat - it was too much for one person and they took half to go. We all enjoyed our meals and are planning on adding this to our rotation of lunch places. You can order from the dinner menu too but more $$ then lunch. Not the biggest lunch menu but a good mix and priced right - menu is on their website. Place was clean - staff was great - price was right and food was above par. With so many places suffering to be staffed and deliver value for your dollars - this place was hitting on all cylinders. I definitely recommend! I give it 5 Yelps and a couple yums!!!! read more

We went tonight and the food was really good. I'm vegan while my fella is a meat eater and we both enjoyed what we had. Not at all greasy, super fresh and tortillas are made in house (you can really tell the difference). Yes they were short staff (who is not these days) so there were a few mistakes made but overall the staff was super nice and doing their best. We will for sure return again. Food is delicious. Service is good. And the ambiance is family friendly. And the drinks are awesome.

Two of us had their freezer burned Red snapper(shoe leather) served with , get this, disgusting instant mashed potatoes... yes confirmed it from waiter...and raw broccoli . Did not eat any of this rubbery , frozen, not sure what it was ,thing! Other guest had Ahi tuna... over cooked to the brick stage & with the same instant mashed potatoes . Left uneaten. Oysters on half shell are bland ( don't expect a tasty briney ocean liquor with these..but was smothered in a tossed salad of toppings, ate one and that was enough ! The frozen then thawed tres leches cake / dry cornbread, was well, cornbread! Again, 1bite was MORE THAN ENOUGH! No one ate that either . I failed to mention the service is practically nonexistent ! My ever returning chance is NEVER. Expensive $$$ prices for Swanson frozen diners then poorly served. ADIOS read more
