I highly recommend this restaurant. We stopped by to see if we could get a reservation on a Friday night. They were able to work us in. The food was very good. I ordered Friday night fish fry, which was deep fried haddock, a popover, coleslaw and french fries. All of the food was cooked perfectly. My fiance ordered a prime rib sandwich and it far exceeded his perfection. The reason for taking time to write this review is due to the service. Every single employee was so friendly and the service was exceptional. The hostess, the wait staff, the bartenders, etc. We also had drinks at the bar and they were amazing! This is a nice supper club that is away from downtown and has parking. We were sat in their main dining room but apparently theirs an upstairs I don't know if that is for parties or the public though and then the have a large bar area. The area is very moody lighting and even has small lamps on each table. Our server and staff were great and everything came out timely. We got an old fashioned and a sangria. The sangria is strong but you won't know it until you stand up. We started with the cheese puppies and they had a fantastic pull to them. Some of the best version of cheese curds I've had in a while. My husband and I both had salads and the bowl was too small for the salad but it was a decent salad I do wish the cheese was sprinkled on top as it ended up going to the bottom of the bowl. For an entree I had steak frites. Fries were solid and the cooking of the steak was good with the charcoal but it didn't have much flavor. The chard on the side was also good considering I've never had it. For dessert we had the valentine special chocolate cake and again it was good but nothing super special. We started with the relish tray which had some unique items (tried our first pickled beet egg). The homemade potato chips and ranch were really good. Would have loved one green item (veggie) on the tray, but obviously that's just personal preference. We had friendly and efficient service. The haddock was excellent. The homemade tartar sauce was also delicious, and the simple fries were the perfect accompaniment. The fish fry came with biscuit that was not good or edible, and the coleslaw wasn't our favorite although some people would probably love the unique flavorings. We had brunch here this morning because my step-son got my husband and I a gift card. We had high expectations, but were disappointed. My husband's biscuits and gravy were good but the potatoes were served cold, as well as his pocket pancake. I ordered the corned beef and eggs. That didn't turn out well at all. Almost half the corned beef was just chunks of fat and was warm at best. Worst I've ever had short of something out of a can. We have some $$ left on the gift card so will try again for dinner. Decided to finally try out the Turnkey. The ambiance was 10/10 and certainly had the old school super club feel. The brandy old fashioned...again, another 10/10. French Onion Soup was 9/10. Not hard to mess up soup really. Now for the rest of the food...uggg. We had the prime rib. The flavor was way too smoky and overpowering on the rub. Outside was too fatty and texture of ash. We also asked for crispy hash browns. No clue what the cook or server was thinking. It was completely burnt. Maybe they thought the dim lighting would hide it!? It also looked like a cheap square hash brown and likely was deep fried in the same oil as the fish. Fish log anyone ? The "charred broccoli" tasted like lighter fluid. The old building is super cool & interesting: This former office building is the last remnant of a twenty-acre complex called the Fuller & Johnson Manufacturing Company. In 1880, John A. Johnson and Morris E. Fuller purchased a small plow manufacturing company and soon renamed it Fuller & Johnson. Within a few years, the two bought an old factory building at the corner of E Washington Avenue and Dickinson Street and, by 1885, it "was the largest and most conspicuous enterprise in Madison." The company's chief product was the "Bonanza Prairie Breaker" plow; however, the company also manufactured other farm machinery. Also in 1885, the company built the main block of the extant office building with other sections being built in 1889 and 1909. We have been wanting to try Turn Key for awhile now and I can't believe we waited so long! We loved the warm, cozy vibe, especially the vintage lighting and unique decorations that gave the space so much character. We started off with the Pepper Mary and an old fashioned , the Bloody Mary was one of the best Bloody Marys I've ever had, lots of flavor. The entrees were generously sized and we had leftovers. We tried the Chicken Charchanski and the Prime Rib. The Chicken Charchanski was flavorful and reminded me of a take on chicken schnitzel. The Prime Rib was great, very tender. It's been about two years since we've been to the turn key so decided to go on a Friday and see how their fish was. It was moderately busy on this Friday night but the service was good and as usual the bartenders were excellent. The fish fry consisted of two larger pieces of haddock. It came with coleslaw which was very good and the usual fries. I opted to have an optional dish of mashed potatoes and gravy for eight dollars and it was good but not worth the up charge of eight dollars. My wife had shrimp cakes for $16 she said it was Worth it. The Turn Key calls l themselves a supper club and have endeavor to make it cozy and on the dark side like a supper club should be. There's plenty of parking here which is nice and both a front and back door to get in. It was worth the trip and we would stop in again to try some of the other entrées. read more

Came for the Friday night fish fry the first Friday of Lent. We got lucky and there was a table open immediately. Not long after the place started to fill up quickly. The fish fry this day was two pieces of haddock. The french fries were the thinner kind that St Peter's in Ashton also does which I like. The fish has a light beer batter and was pretty solid. I wasn't that big on the tartar sauce, I like when it has more of a zing to it. It could be the lighting but it seems like maybe it had a touch of chipotle? I had their house Old Fashioned first, and I was not a fan. They were able to make me a classic Old Fashioned next and that was fantastic. They also had a really yummy looking Mocktail list which I always appreciate. But on Fish Fry Fridays I get to cheat. The fish was yummy, good French Fries, fun little biscuit that came with it. I ordered a Brandy Alexander for dessert (like I said, it was a cheat night... go big or go home)... I said I wanted it thick like you eat with a spoon. The sign on the door says "supper club" -- it's not, but it's also a great restaurant with a funky vibe and a solid drink and food menu. Make sure to have a reservation. We made one online and were quick seated when we arrived. The vibe is quirky, with a hodgepodge of decor, a mix of thrift shop meets north woods urban industrial restoration. When it came time to order drinks and food we were not disappointed. Everyone loved their cocktails, especially their take on a brandy old fashioned. I had an NA cocktail which was great. We ordered hushpuppy curds and the grilled carrots for starters. The curds were a bit underwhelming, more breading than cheese, and the breading was loose so all the cheese melted out. THE CARROTS, however, were absolutely delicious. For entrees, most of our group got the Friday fish fry special. I had the trout, which was cooked excellently (proper crispy skin, delicious herby sauce, and a delicious vegetable hash. We decided to order dessert -- the menu looked good. We opted for the pistachio pudding pie. It was disappointing. The flavors were good but the crust was thin and the custard was over-set (too much stabilizer or over-baking turned it into rubber). Next time we will skip dessert. The service was excellent throughout. There was even a shift change in the middle of our dinner and the staff didn't miss a beat. Overall, it was a fun experience. Stopped in for some drinks before a concert that was canceled due to weather. ended up weathering the storm there and had the prime rib special for dinner. It did not disappoint. It was very tasty. The prime rib French dip not pictured was also very delicious. The horseradish really makes the meal. Our server was very laid-back and attentive. For dessert ending the meal with a champagne cocktail with a sugar cube was a nice way to end the meal. The decor of the menus being in various books located near your table is a very cool way of looking at a menu. My boyfriend and I went here for the Thursday date night and it was an amazing deal. We got SO much food for $60. The house white wine was very good, along with the relish tray. I loved the chips, radishes, and green goddess sauce. My boyfriend had the prime rib sandwich and loved it, he thought it was delicious. My partner and I tried out Turn key on a Saturday night, they had 8 dollar old fashioned which I thought were pretty good, my partner got the "Aldo Leopold Nature Center" drink which was super yummy!! I thought it was still a nice deal however. I tried the big Al which was a shaved prime rib sandwhich that was phenomenal I would 100% come back for this. I ordered the fries too and it came with a yummy garlic aioli as well. My partner tried the steak frites and she loved the greens that came with it, I as well thought they were delicious. The steak was a perfect temperature and was good, nothing spectacular but had a nice Smokey touch to it. She ordered a salad that had a yummy homemade ranch but otherwise was pretty standard. The atmosphere in here was also pretty neat, such fun decor and colors. When you enter there are two rooms separated from the right being the bar sitting area, and the left is an open space with booths and tables. We sat at the end of the hall with our group. The menu, upon first glance is not overwhelming or contains so many options, just a few selections. We opted for the Cheese puppies (which are fried cheese curds), beets salad, and the charred carrots for apps. They were delicious and were a perfect started. Especially the cheese curds, they were basically little fried cheese balls, who can resist that! (unless you are lactose intolerant). For my main, I opted for the trout, I loved that the skin was so crispy and cooked perfected. Especially for being a thin fish, I am always worried of overcooking this, but it was perfect. Albeit there were croutons on the bottom of the fish, which I think could've been something else. Croutons? It was also very soggy, could not finish. Overall, enjoyed my experience, service and food here. With the exception of the croutons in my trout main course. I was actually shocked to see some of these lower reviews on this place. The vibe was cozy, like a supper club should be. Pretty lively on a Saturday night. Seated promptly. Service was good. Lots of parking in the back so definitely NOT an issue. We started off with the cheese curd puppies. Not overly heavy and they were huge in size! I ordered the boneless pork chop and it was delicious. So flavorful. The Brussels sprouts were great-not mushy at all! I'm glad I got the side salad to accompany the fullness of this meal. The cook on it was great! I would definitely come back. People complain about a limited menu, but IMO, I'm about quality over quantity. My friend and I were in town for work and were so glad we ended up choosing Turn Key. Not only was parking behind the building a breeze (a true gift in Madison with all the construction), but we got seated right away at about 6pm on a Tuesday evening. I loved the ambiance and intimate, cozy feel of the place. Also LOVED that it wasn't too loud. It was so easy to chat and have a great conversation without screaming across the table. I went with the rainbow trout and it was to die for. It was served with the skin but came off easily and was cooked perfectly without being over seasoned. The bed of also perfectly cooked cauliflower and asparagus (cut into lovely bite sized pieces) with the sauce was truly amazing. My goodness, yes, 1000 times yes. Was in Madison and looking for a spot for dinner. We consulted our Old Fashioned passport (because might as well get bogo old fashioned cocktails with our meal!) and found this spot. Consulted Yelp and with a 4.5 star average, we knew we found our dinner place. Ordered our old fashioned cocktails first. Theirs is a beautiful blend of rye and brandy. Initially I asked if I could have it exclusively rye but found that they pre-batch their old fashioned cocktails. I'm so glad they didn't adjust! The mix of rye, Korbel, orange, cherry, and maple was an unexpected delight. We dubbed it one of the best old fashioned cocktails we've had on our passport tour thus far. For a starter we opted for their party time relish tray. It was a delightful assortment of turnips, radishes, brussels sprouts, cabbage, house made potato chips, and a couple of dipping sauces (a deviled egg dip and a beautifully dilly ranch). If it doesn't sound good--then I've not done it justice. Everything was so fresh and absolutely bursting with flavor. Their house made chips were delicately thin with just the right amount of crisp and salt. For my main, I opted for their squash toast. It was also incredibly flavorful. It was definitely a fork and knife sort of meal--with a wonderfully chewy rustic bread covered in chopped squash and other seasonings and sauces. It was outta this world. We decided to end the evening by sharing a warm chocolate chip cookie. It tasted straight out of the oven, had tons of chocolate chips and a beautiful sprinkling of sea salt on top. They were able to get us in right away, which was nice on a Saturday. The place began to fill up fast, however, and now we know why! We ordered a round of drinks, which weren't weak by any means. We also went for the relish tray, which was AMAZING! I wish they would bottle that dip. When we arrived we were seated on a Friday night fairly quickly, but we were there early before 6 PM. We started with the relish tray. It was delicious. We had the Friday night Fish fry, We tried both the Cod and Lake Perch dinners. Dinner was done to perfectly. The old-fashions were flowing, and we had their apples, cinnamon cake for dessert .... Save room as you don't want to miss this as it was out of this world. We were very impressed by the friendly wait staff and the manager kept coming around, checking in on everybody. For cocktails we had a Wisco old fashioned and the Professor Gibson. Both were excellent. The Professor Gibson was perfectly balanced with beautifully layered complex flavors. I am not from Madison. I was drawn here like a moth to the flame. A beacon drew me in. I heeded the call. My husband thought we might be entering someone's private party because there is no signage (yet). I didn't care. I'd crash a party for that welcoming bar lit with candles and warm lighting. The ambiance is comfortable with an eclectic vintage nod. We were greeted immediately upon entering. Which was the signal to my husband that we truly WERE welcome. The menus are tucked into hard bound books. This little touch makes the experience even more cozy. I ordered the Sage, Lies, and Videotape which is a fresh, citrus, and herbaceous gin drink served in a coup glass. My husband had the Disco Cowboy which has a smooth, rich, slight chocolatey flavor that makes you feel like you've just lit a chunk of palo santo and all of your bad juju is melting away. We couldn't live off liquid alone and ordered the Goodheart salad and the smashed fingerling potatoes with herby garlic aioli. Highly recommend. Extremely fresh salad with Parmesan pairs well with the salty starchy potatoes. Feeling a little like a holiday lush, I ordered the Bloody Mary martini which tastes just like a bloody Mary's (magically sans tomato juice) but hits like a martini. Go on. Second time I've been here, and went for the date night. I (unfortunately) got the risotto which tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp while in a buffet tray for minimum 10 hours. It was off, excessively over cooked, and was reminiscent of when I mess up a recipe at home and try to fix it by overcooking it. Something I expect from a work potluck tbh. Vibes and service were good, but nothing special. The risotto specifically is so not worth the price, I barely finished a fourth of it. The waiter informed me toast was extra (for an omelette??!!) and they only had rye and sourdough, neither of which I like, so I passed on the toast. The omelette was just average - good flavors but it was dry. Since the omelette was the only thing on the menu I'd really order, I doubt I'll return for brunch. Went on a Saturday in July with a group of 6. It's a beautiful stone building on East Washington. It looked like there was outdoor seating as well as indoor. It's definitely upscale, but with some casual twists--like the cheese puffs and baby pickles on the complimentary charcuterie board when you enter. The menus are tucked into stacks of old books which makes for some fun conversation. With a supper club inspired menu I was very pleased to see they offer a few vegan items. I ordered a cocktail and the Turn Key Gnocchi. It's pricey but it was delicious. The gnocchi was pillowy and chewy and the sauce was lovely and well spiced. We went to the Turn Key, on a whim, to try their fish fry. It was our first time visiting Turn Key. The place is small, dark inside and had a quaint and cozy feeling. The parking lot wasn't very full, but there was no table seating available. We were told to go to the bar area, and found a table there. However, after sitting down, we were told all empty tables were reserved and we had to eat at the bar. We started out with a Wisco old fashioned, which was a bit heavy on the brandy. The drinks arrived with a maraschino cherry and a cheese curd. We both agreed that the cheese curd was a rather odd choice and didn't really go well with the drink. The bartender was friendly, but somewhat absent at times, especially when we wanted to order another drink. We ordered the cheese puppies as an appetizer, and were surprised how many were in the basket. The breading was very thin and crispy. The small curds were the best, as the larger ones ended up being very chewy and took a while to eat. We weren't a big fan of the tomato powder addition to the breading. The side of ranch was just okay, but weak in taste. We ordered the haddock fish fry for dinner. The breading was nicely thin and crisp, but the fish was slightly over cooked, but still decent. A good variation of tartar sauce, which had a touch of dill in it. The fries were very thin and overcooked. The coleslaw was okay, and somewhat dry. I found out after eating it all, that the best part was the seasoning that seeped down to the bottom. Maybe they can try to figure out how to keep the coating on the coleslaw. We tried to wave down the bartender as she was walking down the bar area, for ketchup, but she walked right past us to take care of someone else, and then went to the other side of the bar. Luckily, someone arrived down shortly after. Will we go back, probably not, as were not that thrilled with the food. We always try out fish fries in the area, but no establishment that we visited so far, has ever out competed our favorite fish fry restaurant. read more

Stopped in on a slow Friday night and were immediately seated in the bar area. We liked this better than the other side of the restaurant that was aglow in red lights. We were last here when it was a Mexican joint. The staff were all helpful and professional. The menu was surprisingly small so it might not be a place we would frequent often. We started with the fried green tomato toast appetizer which was really great. This is not something I would order but someone in our group suggested it - a very good choice. It was our first time at Turn Key and it was wonderful! The host and server were very friendly. The cocktails were slightly out of the ordinary in a very tasty way. Our entrees were cooked to perfection and the grilled carrot side was amazing. Turn Key has all of the best things I remember about growing up with supper clubs in Wisconsin. We didn't finish our carrots, but they were too good to leave behind. Our host checked on how we liked our meals and boxed them and brought back for us. I'm usually not a fan of supper clubs - crowded places with ridiculous waits for overpriced and usually mediocre food, but Turn Key was a gem! Every dish was a delight. The drinks were a unique spin on classic cocktails. Waitstaff was accommodating and friendly even with our large party of 8. I'm hesitant to give a stellar review here because I don't want it to become over-popular, I hope it stays just like it is! read more
