The indoor pool and hot tub were pretty popular with the regulars, and they were very welcoming of a new guest.

Mendon Country Inn

We have stayed at the Mendon Country Inn seven times so far and hope to get out there for an eighth…read moresoon. We have thoroughly enjoyed our visits to this inn and the surrounding area and would recommend it to most anyone seeking tranquility, peaceful environs, great food, and excellent company. The Mendon Country Inn is an old stagecoach inn originally from 1843 and has spent time as an inn, a restaurant, and an antique store. I'm glad to say that the proprieters, Chef Gerard and Cheryl Clarke have retained the best parts of each of these to bring every guest a delightful stay. The inn itself has many period pieces in her rooms and Chef Gerard runs a restaurant in the Wakeman Dining Room. As it is new, we have not had the pleasure of dining in it yet, however we have partaken in his delectable full breakfasts each morning and savored a few of his special occasion meals. Our rooms of choice are at the Creekside Lodge, a Native American motif house with five jacuzzi suites with gas or Jensen fireplaces. There is a common room with kitchen, relaxation area, and fireplace on the main level and a common area with fireplace and sauna on the lower level. We enjoy waking up to the chirps of birds and the soothing sounds of the St. Joseph River. That is the calmness we have appreciated in our stays there. We also enjoy the rooms at the Innkeeper's Cottage off the main house. The main attraction for us are the innkeepers. Gerard and Cheryl are a wonderful couple from South Africa where they ran a game preserve. Gerard will keep you entertained for hours with stories of South Africa, the Amish, and the Inn, while Cheryl provides warm hospitality. Many weekends they also host events at the inn or elsewhere. We have been entertained by Irish folk singers, sampled wines from nearby Peterson Winery, and participated in an Amish meal with a nearby Amish family. Our travels in the surrounding countryside have included many stops in the rural Amish communities and stores, a trip to Michigan's longest covered bridge, horseback riding, the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail, canoeing, Peterson's Winery, and Shipshewana, IN, a Mennonite town. There are also golf courses, ski hills, and antique stores for those interested. The one knock on the inn could be that Gerard and Cheryl are still doing some upgrades to the inn since they purchased it from the previous owners. Each time we have been out we've seen the progress they have made, but occasionally there are small items that still need an upgrade. Just part of the charm of staying at a place with so much history. We heartily endorse the Mendon Country Inn and are certain you will enjoy your stay!

Disgusting! Absolutely the worst experience, will never book with them again!…read more Tried to take a picture of a roach but it ran off!

I had the most bizarre and unsafe experience while staying here for a work trip a few months ago. I…read morewas in line to check in with a group of coworkers & while I was waiting in line, my coworker who had been checked in first & already went up to his room came back down to the front desk and said that when he went in his room there was already someone in there laying on the bed! It turns out the front desk attendant read his reservation room number wrong & accidentally duplicated someone else's key card and gave it to him. The attendant then gave him the correct room key card, but that was not a safe situation. The attendant then checked me in & when I went to my room, the key did not work. I went back to the front desk & she reloaded the key but it still did not work when I tried again. The attendant then came with me to my room and tried her master key and that did not work either. She then told me that the battery on the lock probably needed to be changed so she needed to get an Allen wrench to change it out, but that she needed to do some other stuff before she could help me. I had to wait 10 minutes for her to wrap up whatever she was doing before she could come help me, which was the last thing I wanted to do after a long day. She came back with a pack of different sized Allen wrenches and tried them one at a time on the lock because she wasn't sure what size she needed. As she's on her knees trying to change the lock battery, the door opens and there was a man in my room too! Everyone was very confused about what was going on. She asked the man's last name and the name he said was the same one as mine which was strange because I have a unique last name and have never met anyone else with the same name as me outside of my family. The attendant then told me that she was just going to get me a new room. When we went back to the front desk, she was looking in the system and she told me that I was the only person with that last name who had a reservation that night and asked my full name and said that was the room that was tried to the reservation! I ended up getting a new room, but was not offered of any kind of credit or upgrade for my horrible experience. I saw the man who was in my room the next day at breakfast so apparently the random man who supposedly didn't have reservation was not addressed. I'm not sure how he was allowed to get a room key card without checking his ID because it is very unlikely we had same first and last name. Thankfully nothing bad happened to me or my coworker in this situation, but it had the potential to be very dangerous if either of the people already in the rooms would've had malicious intent. This was a very scary experience as a young woman traveling in an unfamiliar area.

I honestly felt like I walked through a wardrobe into a Narnia world. The small sign at the drive was a bit tough to see, so as your map tells you you're close, slow down and look for the Bed and Breakfast sign. The vibe here is full on beautiful Pinterest, French countryside garden chateau. Everywhere you look there is something beautiful to see, from the outdoor pavilion to the stately rooms inside. The ivy covered buildings and gardens bursting with blooms are great backdrops for any photos. The wedding I attended was on a super hot, sunny June day, but there were plenty of amenities provided to guests to alleviate the heat: shade parasols, handheld electric fans, folding fans, and plenty of cold water. This was such a thoughtful touch and really helped make guests comfortable. The mansion in the background was a stunning view for the short but sweet ceremony. Once the ceremony concluded, we were greeted by staff members with water and wine and were directed to a courtyard for hors d'oeuvres and an outdoor bar. There were areas of shade from trees and umbrellas, which was a nice reprieve from the sun. The food was all perfectly arranged and the bacon wrapped date I had was a delicious sweet and savory bite! Molly and Jenn were pouring drinks with big smiles despite the heat. We were ushered into the main reception area -- a beautiful, airy, open pavilion -- by a tinkling dinner bell! Dinner was delicious and all staff members I interacted with were incredibly polite and professional. I was really blown away by the details and care put into this celebration at this amazing venue! Hopefully I can attend another wedding there someday. If you need a beautiful place to get married, look no further than Greencrest Manor.

This is a cute and very reasonable priced place to stay right on the lake…read more We originally were going to stay in a suite, not a cabin. But when we arrived there had been a mixup with housekeeping, and the room had not been cleaned. They had first said they would send housekeeping right away, then offered to upgrade us to a cabin. The cabin was quite nice, and the bed was very comfortable. The only difference was the suite included bath towels. In the cabins you had to bring your own, so there were no towels. But that was OK, because we had brought bath towels, not quite understanding the website. Great value for the money, and I would definitely come back here again.

Each had their own approach, but the new owners are really taking this place in the right direction. The cabins have all been given a facelift without sacrificing the feel of a lake side cabin. One of our favorite things are the pontoon boats that you can rent by the day or for your whole stat. On our very first visit we experienced the joys of Nibbles, a small eatery/ice cream shop on the property. The new owners have aggressive plans to revive this sweet spot which will surely be a favorite stop for all who live on the lake! You will not be disappointed in this cute little gem of a property just minutes from downtown Colon, Michigan (which is also accessible via boat!) The town is host to several great restaurants as well as some awesome magic shows! The salon in town is a welcome stop if you forgot to get your toenails painted before you arrived!
