I think there comes a point in any interaction with staff that it's important to reflect. As a newish yelper I wrote a pretty brutal review for this ACE location. Part of it was the experience I received and the other part was the experience that I perceived. I think that it takes vulnerability to admin when one was wrong and that is what I am doing in this review. Upon reflection, I was not aware that one person had to man the counter for safety. Therefore, walking me or showing me where something was wasn't them being rude but them being safe. I also wasn't aware of the high crime rate around that strip mall. I was aware of lakecity crime but thought there were pockets which were around 125th. Having examined any of my biases I returned multiple times and received GREAT service. Mike, the GM walked me to get screws today and helped me find the perfect size. His son, helped me find paint and explained the primer process on a project, and the manager helped me select various tool options for another project. I truly support ACE stores and the hard working staff that work there. I hope that my review can offset my previous reviews and the other 1 star ones. Not wanting to say Goodbye, leads to not wanting to say Hello. Dunno, I would rather have a smile, greeting or a kind of welcome look in the eyes when I walk in. When I try to describe a major brand, I would rather see some general affinity or attempt at insight, rather than, 'that part of the house is that aisle'. When I get to the aisle and see the brand closest to description, dominating in product placement/ application uses & color- even if confused, I would expect some type of relation by Clerk prior. When I am sitting in that aisle for 15 min trying to confirm specs of brand, I would expect someone to check-in. When I get to the counter for purchase, I talk about the product some and inquire about the words on the front of label- 'If this doesn't work 100%- We refund 100'%= 'I don't know about that' (I assumed it may be just the company & not ACE'- but you are selling it and should have some comment other than more disassociation. At the counter with this attempt, I would expect you to be able to take $100 and not be directed to the grocery store for change. If you are so busy, then have some change/ if you are that dead, then help. To be fair, it was morning shift, but my Dentist has change in the morning and you are, well your main thing is sales and you are specifically a mercantile*. Lastly, I would rather not feel like I am putting out the Clerk when I ask at the end of a purchase- if this ACE gives Rewards points? 'You get benefits, then what is your number?' - ACE. [Again, there are different store cultures, but around 75% of us use them, it's always asked in my purchase history, it can save us a lot of $ depending and the irony- it's called "Loyalty", which I am beginning to interpret as a loose term for- "It's all on you man". I find it ironic I have reviewed 2 ACE's back x back with low stars, as in both my main memories are of friendly people and are part of the hood. I just think something sticks out more when it seems to go against perceived baseline. This was to be 3 sentences, if I even took time to write. I think different stores have different personalities, the Clerk likely does a good job and he was not mean. Mostly, I am thinking this was a major waste of time considering real life, but as long as I did, it's being posted for closure. I am a elderly customer and have been a shopping at this store for 40+ years, great store with great service. Today the young kid at the counter (Josh?) could not have been more rude and disrespectful to a Senior Citizen. He was unable to answer a question and he was visibly angry. I mentioned that he was not being very nice and noted that "nobody should talk to a customer that way". He told me to "leave the store and not come back". I am deeply hurt and saddened. I have gone out of my way to patronize this hardware store since it's in the Lake City Neighborhood. I'd guess I've been in here maybe once a week for a number of years. Today, I had four items and was ready to check out. The tall blonde fellow with glasses trying to rock the Napoleon Dynamite look was angrily muttering to himself about just having been told to do his job by one of the other store employees - something about being an adult or other. This fellow grabbed my stuff and rang it up still obviously in a snit and said $73 and whatever change it was. It couldn't have been more obvious that it was the wrong tally and I asked him to check it because the total was wrong. He literally rolled his eyes, let out a wounded sigh, spun the register screen hard, and began barking off the items as if talking to a misbehaving child. I pointed out that he had rung up one of my items three times and he all but snarled about it even after he finally realized I only had one of that item - basically an $18 mistake on his part. I told him that I didn't appreciate being flipped a load of attitude and he exploded. Enough. I walked out with a $55+ purchase sitting on the counter and called out to the regular employee that the fellow's belligerent attitude had lost a sale and a regular customer. 6 minutes later I was at Maple Leaf Ace dealing with friendly professional staff and a store that's far better stocked anyway. I will no longer be routinely trying Tweedy and Pop first. You've lost another very regular customer. read more

The staff at Tweedy and Popp's is always helpful and knowledgeable. I have been going there since they opened in Lake City. I do not know why the negative reviews except that I have worked retail in the past and I know some customers come in with negative attitudes and there is nothing you can do to make them happy. It has been said that one happy customer tells one person. One unhappy customer tells five people. Now with the internet that one unhappy customer can spam many people and businesses. I've had good experiences with this store in the past, but it seems things have changed. I came in to get another gallon of house paint to match the many gallons I bought at this store last year. The clerk at the paint counter seemed at first confused by my problem and then, quickly, quite angry. He didn't want my business at all, even to sell me the toilet seat I'd selected. I'm really quite astonished. There are other hardware stores nearby, even Ace hardware stores, where the staff are helpful and friendly. Patronize them instead. read more

Spent about $75 on a newly made window screen from the Tweedy & Popp Crown Hill location, and it broke the moment I returned home, so I called Tweedy & Popp Lake City to see if I could get it fixed quickly. They were more than happy to do so, and got it back to me the following morning. To my dismay, it actually broke right away when trying to put it into my window the second time too. I don't know if there was too much tension on it, or poorly made, but I'm so furious it broke. I tried calling this Lake City location about 5 different times and emailing customer service, and no response by anyone. I expected better quality of materials and response, but am out $75, and still don't have a window screen. So disappointed! read more

Many rude and un-helpful employees, and a general suspicious atmosphere (including multiple hand-scrawled signs telling you what NOT to do... bring in a backpack, ask for a bathroom, etc.) If you don't like the flavor of the neighborhood, open a store elsewhere. I think these people would be happier in Medina. Also, although they have a sign on the door asking customers to still wear a mask, the salesclerk did not wear one. TL-DR: Possibly racist, definitely classist business practices. Profiling of customers resulting in them being subjected to increased unilaterally enforced security procedures. I've shopped here a few times and have always had sort of a weird feeling about the older, tall,white, white-haired man who is almost always working there (possibly the owner). The first time I went into the store, my girlfriend (who is asian-american) and I went in about 30 seconds apart and even though we both had bags, he only made her leave her bag at the counter, which struck me as odd. The next time we came in, this time at the same time, my girlfriend asked him if she needed to leave her bag at the counter and he said something along the lines of that she wasn't the type he was worried about, but still had her leave her bag, which again struck me as odd and also explicitly recognizable as specific codified language for racial profiling and/or economic profiling, which made us both uncomfortable. Today, I went into the store and this same man checked me out for my purchase at the register. I overheard the customer in front of me in line (a white man in tattered and stained clothes with visible dirt and grime around his arms head and neck), say something about checking a bag, to which the older white-haired man said "oh, no, thats okay, you don't fit the profile" followed by a chuckle - this time literally using the word "profile". I asked him "what's the profile?" and he replied "well, it's pretty simple.", with a huge smug grin on his face and proceeded to stare blankly at me for a several seconds. I asked "So, what does that mean, then?" to which he replied with "why don't you go around the corner around here and you'll see what I'm talking about" sort of pointing outside. At this point, he wasn't willing to say it the first two times I asked him (and if the thing you're implying is something you're embarrassed to say explicitly in public, then that should be your first sign that at least some part of you knows its wrong.) So I had to ask a third time, "What would I find there if I went where you said?". He still never explicitly said whatever he had been implying would be someone who "fit the profile" because at that point, another employee interjected to say "its just tweekers around here are a regular nuisance". That attitude alone, especially for a business, is already gross and explicitly classist, but even regardless of whatever impact "tweekers" have on their business, it is clear that people who shop here, as a result, are subject to unilaterally enforced increased security based on whatever criteria this dude has decided "fits the profile" for being a "tweeker". Enforcing varying degrees of security that change on a whim from customer to customer based on personal subjective criteria is profiling which is a discriminatory practice - Never shopping here again. read more

Never in my life have I been treated so rudely.....I'm a tattoo artist so I'm not the cleanest cut person, but I walk in and go browse the paint brushes, make my selection and then start browsing , and this guy storms down the aisle demanding I give him the paint brush, and the one I put in my pocket. " are you serious " I ask him. I proceed to empty all my pockets as he accuses me of the next pocket and the next. keep in mind a paint brush that is like 8" long.....I empty all my pockets and I say "are you serious???" then I ask him," what is your problem" and he blurts out......" you are now get out!" no apology.....no nothin. I will NEVER go to any ace hardware after that. he didnt even apologize for the false accusation or let me purchase the brush I came in for. Unfortunately the customer service in this store lacks empathy and simple politeness. I went to exchange a few simple screws and was told "we don't take those back" I honestly would have been fine with that information, however the way the gentleman spoke really rubbed me the wrong way. He assumed I read a tiny note on the receipt, or a small laminated/outdated note on his counter. Perhaps you should verbally tell someone when something isn't returnable or exchangeable rather than making them feel foolish when they come to try and exchange or return something. This morning I went to purchase 2 box fans and filters at Tweedy and Popp Hardware. I was buying 1 for an 85 year old neighbor, with a serious lung disease, who was unable to get to the store herself, and 1 for myself. The manager said "One fan per customer". When I explained what I was doing, and would be using 2 separate credits cards, mine and my neighbor's, he brushed me off. He said I couldn't buy the 2nd one until the next day. I'm 75, the air quality has been rated hazardous for several days now. I was shocked by the manager's complete lack of reason or compassion. He had his policy and by God he was sticking to it. Never mind the circumstances. They did not have filters to fit the fan (for homemade air filter), so were selling filters that didn't fit. I did purchase 1 box fan at a price higher than advertised on the Internet (which I now regret and will probably return). Then I drove to Home Depot. Huge difference. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. They had a stock of the exact same box fans for 30% less than Tweedy and Popps. Yes, 30% less. You can be sure I will not shop at Tweedy and Popps EVER again. Indifferent management (staff was nice), poor customer service, and price-gouging. read more

I received a rewards coupon for 50% off one item under $30.00 to be used only on Black Friday. I drove all the way from the University area to use it. When I walked up to the cashier with my Gorilla Duck Tape I gave the cashier my phone with the coupon. The cashier said "we do not honor those coupons". I left. No "I am sorry" or anything. Now some may be OK with this kind of business dealings. I however am not. There are too many good fair hardware stores in Seattle to deal with this kind of unethical practices. Went into Tweedy and Pops looking to have my 14 year old paint can shaken so that I could paint over a remodel on my fireplace. I am embarrassed to say the I can't remember the managers name - but he was incredible. Helped find the optimum paint replacement ( mine was too old to use) schooled me on the proper application and clean up - while all along making me feel comfortable and not in the slightest way making me feel incompetent.This is not the best location... while I was there .. a young man came in and bought a spray can of paint ( when I left I saw him spraying it into a bag in his car...hmmm...) the staff in the store treated everyone respectfully. I will continue to support this business, where kindness is evident along with the expertise. read more

I find it rather interesting that this business was in the news for a fight between a maskless vaccinated shopper and an employee. Today, on 08/07/2021 at 2pm, I shopped there and the mask sign was on the door. But a woman getting some keys cut was not wearing a mask. The 2 employees did not ask her to put one on. I would not have coommented about this on Yelp, about any other store. But this Ace Hardware made such a big deal about it, I thought they would at least uphold THEIR policy equally. Apparently, they do not. If I was the man getting kicked out a month or 2 ago, I would complain for obvious unequal treatment. I agree 100% for any business to uphold rules for their safety. I am vaccinated and still wear masks to most places. But in this case, it seems to be favored to certain shoppers. That is not alright. read more

This hardware store is only a few blocks from me, so it would be the most convenient, but I've actually had an easier time finding someone to help me at Home Depot! The last time time I went there (which will definitely be the last time I go there), I needed a kitchen sink aerator. I brought a sample of the one that didn't have the right kind of threads for my faucet. An employee was finishing helping a customer outside and i caught his attention as he was coming back in and asked which aisle this common part was in. Rather than taking 3 seconds to say, "aisle 3 on the back right side" or whatever, he said, "let me help him get this line down 1st and then I'll help you out". I looked and saw a very long line of 8 or so customers. Really? you're going to ask me to wait until 8 customers are rung up rather than take a few seconds to give quick directions? If there had been a single other employee on the floor, i would have asked but had already looked and there was no one. That's poor time management. It's not like i cut the line and asked the cashier to get off the register to come help me; I asked an employee who was already walking around the store to verbally tell me what aisle kitchen plumbing is in. That was the last time, but the few times before I also received lackluster assistance. I wound up going to Fred Meyer after and THEY had what i needed (although their employee I asked also didn't know if they had a plumbing department, but that's for another review) read more

I have used Tweedy and Popps in Lake City for years, but never again. I tried to exchange four machine screws for four other more expensive ones of a different size and was told that, " We don't take bulk hardware returns. It's policy." I have returned bulk hardware to this store many times but apparently the policy has changed? I told them that customer service and convenience are why I spend a couple of hundred dollars a year at their store, where prices are substantially higher than the competition. If I can't exchange four screws 15 minutes after purchasing them, it is neither convenient nor good service. For the sake of $2.00 they are forgoing hundreds a year in future sales. I doubt they will remain in business long. This attitude stands in sharp contrast with Ace Hardware in Maple Leaf, where they have lots of people to help, prices are lower, and they never hassle you about returns. read more

I spend a lot of money (and absurdly too much time) at Home Depot. It's a seven-minute drive from my house, and they have... stuff. Most of the stuff that most people need, most of the time. That's what a "home center" is. T&P Ace has _precisely_ what I need, _exactly_ when I need it, and they know how to find it promptly. Flathead 5/16-18 bolts, 1/4" shorter than stock so they won't drag and scrape? Done. Cheesehead M3 screws in 25mm length on a Sunday night to fit into a server's special HDD fan cages? No problem -- in fact, since I only had a buck in my pocket, the clerk who had already spent ten minutes helping me find the screws just before closing, kicked in a dime from his pocket and three pennies out of the dish on the counter to make the $1.13 tab come right. That's what a "hardware store" is. Not enough stars in the box for these guys. read more

DO NOT COME IN HERE IF YOU ARE BIPOC! I am PoC and have been to this location several times and each time I am asked to leave my very small purse at the counter (which I have done each time with no questions asked). Today a white male was in the store and asked the employees to take his large bag to which the employee (possible owner? Tall, older, white male with white hair and mustache) said, "No, don't worry about it. You don't fit the profile." My boyfriend overheard this and responds, "What's the 'profile'?" The employee responds, "It's pretty simple", and smiles at my boyfriend. To which my boyfriend asks, "What does that mean?" At this point it is becoming crystal clear that this Ace Hardware employee is talking about racially profiling his customers. My boyfriend continues to ask, "What do you mean?" until another employee had to imply that they are worried about homeless people stealing (which is also classist so still awful). Based on the fact that the first employee couldn't answer a simple question (about his racial profiling) after being asked FOUR times to explain himself and that I am PoC and am asked to check my bag every time I have ever been there, speaks VOLUMES. The exchange that happened today was disgusting and we will be taking our business elsewhere. Seriously it's 2020 guys. Do better. read more

It's a convenient location with an adequate variety of hardware. But, the manager doesn't seem motivated to respond to costumer concerns. I purchased a roll of "duck" tape that came un-attached solely by gravity--it just fell off the paperboard within hours of application. I figured that they would be happy to exchange it for a different product. Nope. The staff apparently aren't trained or authorized to render judgement. The manager didn't even bother to leave his office to respond to my concern--just commented about possible incompatibility. It was just a $7 roll, probably $3.50 at their cost. I know that the good folks at Mapleleaf Hardware understand that that's a small price to pay for customer loyalty, a lesson Tweedy & Popp has yet to learn. read more

Used to be a good place, but gosh it can be hard to get help in there & I can't believe the attitude on the lady at the desk. I had wandered around looking for cup hooks for an age. The guy apparently assigned to help people was stuck with one lady for at least 15 minutes, then jumped on the customer who just walked in the door to offer his help next. I finally gave up waiting & asked the woman at the desk if they had cup hooks. Big mistake. Twisted her face up, snapped "eye hooks?" at me. Uhh, no. They are called cup hooks. She then said "you mean the hooks with the open ring?" Well yes, but that is a cup hook and an eye hook is something else entirely. Pointed me down an aisle at the opposite end of the store "they are right there." Right. Along with thousands if not hundreds of thousands of other tiny items hanging on the aisle walls. Nice. When I balked, she then snapped "Can't you see there is a guy working here standing right down there who can help you?" Except he is now occupied with helping someone else, and I have been looking on that same aisle for at least 20 minutes. I don't feel like waiting or looking again, which is why I went up to someone else asking for help. Her attitude was so snappy, impatient and rude. I told her I was done with it, and started walking out. At that point she decided to attempt being helpful & said she was going to yell "stop" when I walked down the 2 aisles at the exact spot where the cup hooks should be - oh excuse me eye hooks even though that isn't what they are. And that she WOULD have walked me down there but she is assigned to the till. Well fine, but did you really need to bite my head off in the first place? Suggestion: if you want people to shop in your store, you might as well start off being helpful rather than be snide & snappy & then try to turn it around as the customer is walking out the door. 2 stars instead of 1 because there is a very good variety of items in the store - it used to my go to place for all things hardware. No more. I went to Lowes & a guy helped me who was so patient & no bad attitude at all. Sad when a big box store offers a huge step up in customer service. read more

I've been going to this hardware store for over 20 years. I make an effort to support neighborhood stores. Unfortunately the customer care and service has deteriorated immensely. This morning I stopped by to get a few things on my list, the manager pointed in the general direction of the items, Btw the music playing on overhead had swear words just in case you bring your family. Also there was a homeless man masturbating right outside store window. Without guidance, I chose the items incorrectly and had to exchange a few things several hours later. No big deal. However when I went to exchange items I was told "returning items is an inconvenience" by one clerk & told to "use my words next time" by the store manager. Well there will not be a next time. And here are my words...I will not tolerate degrading rhetoric and impertinent customer service. read more

Let me have my turn to rave about this Tweedy and Popp Ace Hardware! SUPER FRIENDLY people who will help with anything...even walk the aisles with you and help you make your purchasing decision. Doesn't matter on the phone or in person...this is top notch service! Home Depot has a big place with so many things and "i don't work in that department" mentality from their workers...who are also very nice...but T&P are the best. They have everything from big jobs to small jobs...you will find it here in a nice small and quaint store. Grocery Outlet and O'Reilly's are their neighbors...but they stand taller then any of them. In the past, the staff at this store have been really helpful to me. Recently, I saw the picture of a watering can and decided to order it. They did that and I came back the next week to pick it up. My concern is not with their products nor their service in getting the item; but it is with one clerk (perhaps the manager) who did not wear a mask even though I saw a few other customers enter without a mask. I did wear a mask, esp. since I am a senior. When I asked this man why he did not wear a mask, he had not answer other than to shrug his shoulders. When I asked how he would feel if he became the transporter of the virus from one customer to another, he shrugged his shoulders again. When I tried to continue the conversation, he literally walked away and went to his private office space. I am deeply saddened by his refusal to consider how he models how to care about his employees and customers without a reason that could be considered justifiable. My district rep. wrote me that he had received a similar although anoymous comment. His younger employee wears a mask but said, in explanation, that it is allergy season. I do not think it is social practice to mask for allergies. I hope the manager/owner of this business will decide that it does not sacrifice his freedom to respect the fears and concerns of others. Great place! Didn't accept my coupon (it was for another store), but not their fault I can't read and the coupon isn't very clear. I got my key copied quickly and everyone was very kind and helpful! They have a decent selection, but didn't have curtain rod holders in the size I needed. I see this as a fantastic place to pop buy for the essentials, but for a wider variety, a larger store might be necessary. read more

I went to this store and what appeared to be the manager refused because it was "a whole different process", it was 15 minutes from closing time and he was on the phone.
