Everything under one roof. This recreation. enter is spacious with plenty of equipment that is always well maintained. Cardio room has a dozen different types of machines with multiples if each. Circuit room has 14 machines to help work every muscle group. Main weight room has it all and is often the busiest place. Mornings are quieter here and I like that. Large pool with four lanes for lap swim in the mornings. Large clean locker room. Upstairs is a full basketball court and well equipped space for floor work. Often pick up games are happening upstairs. The local amateur boxing club workouts out here with a full boxing ring and workout area. I absolutely love this gym. I have to give a shout out to a new class they have in the pool called Glidefit. I love their pool and swim there regularly. This class was challenging yet fun. There is a large board (like a paddle board) and it is held in place and you exercise on it. It was crazy fun but it was a workout I felt for sure. Decided that I want to start incorporating swimming into my weekly exercise. This gym is perfect for that! Great location with bike racks outside if you bike to it. It's only $5.50 for a drop in fee. Otherwise they sell 15, 30 packs of membership or even monthly or yearly. I think the 15 pack came out to $64. Staff is friendly and the pool is literally he perfect temperature every time I go!!! read more

Welcome to the HOUSE of PAIN! But yo I am not the butler! Gyms nickname with some of Everlasts most famous groups lyrics, so just like the prodigal son I have returned! This is my favorite gym in Denver, hands down! Its housed in old historic building on 20th street. Its called the House of Pain because of the boxers and boxing history of this Gym. Stevie Johnston a former world champion from Denver started and trained here for much of his career. The ring in prominently located on the top floor at the top of the stairs there's a certain allure to it that makes one have great white hope dreams! My favorite is the under sized Basketball court located right about the humidity producing swimming pool. A nice combination that creates an environment for some pretty intense basketball games. In my prime this was my main stomping ground for pick up BBALL! Yes Big Daddy had some game! The weight room was ran by a man who's presence commanded respect and on more then one occasion his harping to me control the weights don't let them control you, is a lesson that has stuck with me. He has since passed and there is a nice article about him on a board located right outside the gym take the time to read it and pay respects! Is this the nicest trendiest gym in Denver, not by a long shot. This however is a place that you can come swim, do some aerobics, play some ball, box and lift some weights at a fraction of the cost that the commercialized national chains charge. So if you want to put in some work and get to it this is your spot, if you want to look good and get noticed take your poser arse someplace else! The pool is a fantastic deal. There's never more than a few people using it -- I always have my own lane. $20 for a month-to-month pass. It's 20m (instead of the standard 25m), but for the price, who's complaining? It would be a 5/5 if the hours were a little better (closed at 7:30pm and closed on Friday evenings). A friend recommended this gym for my use during our Denver visit, and I was quite surprised in a good way. First of all; only $5.50/day for out-of-state lifters is a great deal. Second; they have sufficient free weights, and even powerlifting chains - for the serious lifters! (No, it will never be mistaken for Westside Barbell - but it lets you get the work done.) Plenty of cardio machines, swimming, basketball, and as I said - FREE WEIGHTS. This gym was built in 1908, and it is still open - so they MUST be doing a few things right! I will be back! read more

Take out all of your stress, aggression, and anger for just $150 a year. This rec center has boxing. There are speed bags, heavy bags and a sparring ring. They have boxing classes. Just think how much is it worth to imagine obliterating your ex as if they were the heavy bag. At the 20th st rec center you can do it for less than 50 cents a day. There is hardly anyone in the gym when I go here. No lines for the weights or the treadmills. There is also a pool. This a good place to actually work out and not for making an appearance in between Lattes. read more

This is one of my favorite Denver parks gyms, I have been working out here for well since the 90's and its been there since perhaps the 60's?. The old skool gym in Denver. This is actually originally a boxing gym and has that type of feel. Sometimes you feel as though there should be a bunch of hanging slabs of meat in this gym that you can beat on like in a Rocky movie. This gym has a unique lay out with an upstairs and a downstairs-it kind of feels like a downtown public high school. Be careful when making eye contact with some of the old school reg's here-it can have the feel of what I think a penitentiary shower room might be like if you "disrespect" someone. For the most part this is usually one of the least crowded, least expensive, and best places to work out in Denver. It is small but has all the equipment and free weights you need. The pool is clean and usually uncrowded and the aerobics room has great people watching windows that you can use to watch the denizens of 20th and Curtis-(yuppies, winos, down town hipsters, etc.) walk by as you work out on a bike, treadmill, or eliptical. Like the other reviewer says-you leave behind the spandex and lycra scene at this gym-there are very few mirrors for Narcissistic posing-just an old school gym with all the right equipment and a rough edge. Twentieth Street Recreation Center is like the grand dame of Denver recreation. She's been around so long she's an institution, but she's also starting to show her age. So for the modern gym-goer, there is a lot to be desired. For one, the swimming pool is simply a lot smaller than standard size. Sure it's all that would fit in this beautiful old building, but I really only like to swim in a standard 25-yard pool. Anything else just doesn't cut it. 20th street does have a good, boxer-oriented weight/excerisize room. Lots of jump ropes, free weights and punching bags. You can definitely get a good workout pumping iron, so I definitely appreciate that. The downtown set knows it though, so it can often be a bit crowded. I try to go on my weekday offs right in the middle of the day when most are at work. That way I also avoid the crappy traffic that plagues this area of town, especially during rush hour (I do understand it's not the fault of the gym). But 20th Street is something special. It's a wonderful, unique, historic gym (the oldest public gym in Denver). And even though I realize it's not quite as useful as I want it to be, I still go here and enjoy it's simple charms. read more

I really haven't reviewed this gym? Seriously? Because (Warning! Humble Brag Alert...) I have spent a lot of hours here! Last year I decided to throw myself headfirst into triathlons, and I logged many laps in the pool and miles on the treadmill here in preparation. What I love about this gym is how small it is. The pool is just 20 yards, the cardio room has just five treadmills. But it really fosters a since of community. I always see the same people, both employees and gym-goers. What I don't love is that it's a tiny gym without many amenities. The locker room is small, and because it's a city rec center it's closed on Sundays as well as all of the city furlough days. The exercise bikes are a little janky. For the price it can't be beat, but it's about as no-frills as you can get. read more

I live very close to this rec center and it is very convenient. The staff is always friendly, and I feel welcome when I go in. The locker rooms are old but I love the privacy options. I'm very comfortable showering there after a swim. I don't love the size of the pool but the everything else makes up for it. This is the "downtown" rec center that I swim at sometimes. The pool is short at 15 meters, so it's hard to work up a full steam before you have to turn around. Which is good in some situations, but I prefer the longer 25 meter pools available at other nearby centers. One thing inconsistent with other centers is that you can't swipe yourself in here. You have to hand your card over and they do it for you. It's fine unless there are people in line ahead of you, in which case you're just kind of stuck waiting. read more

After an awful experience at denver gym and fitness, my boyfriend and I decided to check this gym out. We got a 30day pass to try it out. 1. They have a great pool and just got some new equipment so everything works great 2. Louis at the front desk is so AWESOME he definitely played a big part in us getting a membership. 3. I got personal training sessions with Maria and she is awesome! Definitely showed me some new ways to work out and challenged me not to give up. She also takes the time to customizes workouts based on clients needs and wants. 4. Not too crowded during the 6-7am and 6-8pm workout periods which is nice. 5. Overall a great experience!!! I am spoiled. Yes, I admit it. As part of my Regional Rec Center Memebership, I have access to all the Denver Recs, and I choose to go to Central Park Rec Center 99% of the time I work out. Since it is a regional center, it is larger than Local or Neighborhood rec centers with longer hours and more bells and whistles. I like Central Park because it is near work, and I have grown accustomed to the lay out, newer machines and nice equipment. I am mindful of the fact that 20th street is a Neighborhood rec center and by default, is not as great as Central Park, yet it is close to home. The few times I have gone, I was bummed because of they segmented lay out and old school weight machines, but on the upside, I do like the ellipticals they have. Last time I was in the weight room, 2 guy friends were using machines across the room from eachother and spent the entire workout talking really loudly, er actually screaming, back and forth, about all sorts of stuff. It was definitely annoying. I have taken yoga a few times, and it is harder than i expect, especially since we hold the poses for a bit. I am usually the youngest in class by a good 20 years, but I don't mind. Yes, the building is beautiful and membership is affordable (part of my Regional Rec Center), but truthfully, this gym just is just not my style. Because, again, I am spoiled. read more

This place would get 3.5 stars if there was such a rating. On the plus side: it's cheap and it wasn't overly crowded. It's also got a nice studio area and a better weight room than any hotel. However, the serious lifter will be left wanting here. There is no deadlift area, isometric machines are sparse along with the weight area in general. Don't get me wrong. I would come back here to train if I was on the road again. But there is much to be desired if I was to consider making this a full-time gym option. read more

I absolutely love this place! It's bright, it's cool, it's roomy, and the staff is super nice and helpful! Highly recommend for downtown dwellers. This is a great gym. The boxing ring and equipment is great. Both of the boxing instructors are good at keeping me motivated. If all you want to do is box, then the classes are cheaper than paying to use the gym, outside of a membership of course. The evening instuctor was sad when I left and even offered free classes, till I got on my feet again. Most of the people who go here are down to earth and accepting, skinny and buff. The kickboxing/bootcamp class is the hardest fitness class I have taken, because it involves constant movement. Even red rocks seemed easier than this. The gym and pool are almost never busy and open early in the morning. The pool satisfies my aesthetic desires, with old architecture and wide open windows. Certain management doesn't know when to use discretion. Was refused access to the gym on X-Mas Eve morning for wearing cargo pants. Had a pair of cargo shorts (no rivets, no metal, etc) in my car. Returned. Was refused entry again. On Xmas Eve morning. Drove over to Glenarm rec center, was warmly greeted with a 'happy holidays' and went about my workout. In addition to some arrogant management (not all, most of their staff is awesome at 20th st), their pool is tiny and dirty. I haven't been back to 20th St since Xmas eve morning and when my membership expires, I'm highly considering moving to a private gym. At least a private gym has to meet customer service goals with accountability. Just to underscore the point.. At a city-run rec center, I was denied entry on Xmas Eve Morning (for wearing cargo shorts.. which I always wear to that gym). read more

If you are looking for a 24 hour/Balley's/etc keep looking. If you are looking for a solid gym downtown that is the classic 1950's gym (and 1950's pricing...) this is the place for you. It has a pool, cardio room, basketball court, weights and a boxing set up. You won't find many spandex clad attention seeking tools here. Everyone has been very friendly and accommodating, staff and patrons. It isn't open Sundays and the parking is a little rough but overall great place to be. read more

I've been coming here for years and love the place. If I haven't gone in for a few days, weeks or months, I don't feel ashamed but welcomed back with enthusiasm. Every person who works here is kind and knowledgeable. They are not overbearing at all, but are available to help or teach if asked. Pool, cardio room, weight room, boxing & spin classes are all enjoyable and underutilized by downtown residents. I have gained true friends and self esteem while dropping pounds. I love the feel of the historic building. The city Rec pass gets me into any Rec center I want to go to so I've been to many others, but come back to 20th St because the space and people make it a GEM. read more

When taking equipment, staff, price and availability into account definitely a 5 star gym. All the necessary equipment for compound lifting: a power cage; enough barbells and dumbbells even for experienced trainers. The content far exceeds what you expect for the price. Also very important for travellers is the low drop in price of $5.50 for 24+ and less for -24 from your second visit. The gym changing areas are slightly dated but everything is very well maintained. The only negatives could be parking (to someone who doesn't know the area -although 1 dollar an hour right outside, but a two hour limit) and if you are not acclimatised to the heat it might be warmer than average read more

Weights, pool, bball, and classes- yea just like every rec center. No.. , It's all that and then some. As soon as you get here, be captured by the 100 or so year old architecture, floor plans and history. Modern equiptment, clean enviroment, and a friendly staff keep me coming back for more.. Actually me coming back has alot to do with the boxing equiptment. Other gyms have those punching bags in which you fill the bottom with water or sand. 20th street is the real thing, boxing ring an all. I love this place. It's close to my work and much cheaper than the other options downtown. The staff is great, the pool is fine (although not Olympic length), and the building is really cool. The weight room is a good size and just got new equipment. There aren't a ton of cardio machines, but I haven't had much trouble getting on the one I want. The locker room could use a good cleaning, but overall, this place is a great workout for a good price. read more

I've been using there facility for approximately 6 months, the staff are complacent. I only use their tread mills since I work downtown and running is a good cardio work out during lunch hour. The only thing I notice about that staff is no interaction, only to enforce their interpretation to the rules of the establishment. Trouble is there isn't any posting of the rules on the premises or the web site. The common things I've witnessed is when staff is approached about questions or requests , there met an apathetic attitude, or greeted with sarcasm. So today I wanted to break up my work out with some TaeKwonDo kicking drills. Mind you I didn't use any of the punching bags or the rec,"s equipment. I brought my own kicking pads, I previously invited two friends to work out me and they joined up. Well our second day in doing our kicking drills one of the staff began harassing us about not using the boxing ring, saying its only for boxing and continued to scold us for not wearing boxing shoes. We had our shoes off ! He also scolded us that we can't be training people here? We were just kicking hand pads ! So we got out of ring and continued kicking, and then he comes back for a second round of scolding ! Put your socks on?? Management needs to get a clue and think about how to treat people. I don't feel like going back! Don't feel welcome their. Also they should post rules plainly to avoid embarrassing clients. I mean you can't kick the punching bags? Why have them available if you can't use them? Any way I'm looking for another gym that will appreciate my business! Too bad I can't get my money back for a year pass! read more
