Reddi Green Turf Farms is a family-owned business that sells sod. Varieties of sod include Kentucky…read moreBluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass and Fine Fescue, and Kentucky Bluegrass and Turf-type Tall Fescue. (See the business's website if you need help with choosing the type of sod or figuring out how to install it.) Each slab of sod is roughly 18" x 24" and currently (as of summer 2022) costs $0.61 per square foot. Orders of 2,400 square feet or less may be ordered within 24-48 hours of notice, and larger orders should be ordered 48+ hours in advance. The owners require "no minimum quantity," so this sod is appropriate for both large and small projects. If you need a pallet, then a deposit of $20 is required. For my project, I calculated that I needed only 48 square feet of sod, which would be 16 slabs of sod. To place my order, I filled out a form on Reddi's website. Within hours, an employee emailed me to confirm my quantity, price, and pickup time. Please note that the business's pickup times are limited, so please call them or visit their website to see their hours. I stopped by on a Friday around 5 PM. Initially, I drove past their building, but then I turned around and asked a man if I had the correct location. Make sure to look for a red building (see my attached photos). Please note also that this business accepts payment in only check or cash. The total cost for my 48 square feet of sod was $31.04, and the employee did not worry about the four pennies. One employee used a forklift to move my sod to the other side of the road, and the other employee kindly helped my husband to load the sod into the back of our SUV. We felt very pleased that the 48 square feet fit on top of a tarp in the back of our SUV. Another customer had purchased about five times as much sod, and he was putting it onto his seats... Of course, a pickup truck would be appropriate for larger amounts.

They are priced well and are very responsive and prompt with their deliveries. Was even able to leave a check for them and just a note on where to put the sod delivered after I had used them the first time. Really good people and business.

Once a week or so during the summer, a farmer's market can be found in a parking lot in Beechview…read morein a parking lot near the Fallowfield trolley station. The other evening, as I dismounted the train, I came face to face with a bearded man in a blue shirt, overalls, suspenders and wide-brimmed hat that I assume was of the Mennonite faith. Before him on a table sat a bevy of baked beauties. Cookies, muffins, gobs...Shoofly pie. As I approached him, he asked "A workin' man, are ya?" "Yes sir. I just got done for the day." "Well, God Bless ya." "Thank you." "What can I do for ya?" "Well, I have 4 bucks cash on me." "Oh, we can work something out." And work something out we did, the gentleman offering me a 50 cent discount on a small Shoofly pie and a chocolate gob. Sweet Montgomery, was the pie treacly! Yet, I welcomed its wholesome, molasses-derived taste and texture that adhered to the insides of my mouth like glue. It was similiar to a pecan pie without pecans and possessed a flavor that approached chocolate or Nutella. Its crumbly crust has no preservatives and doesn't hold up well after a few days I was told, so eat it fast I did, half that evening and the other half the following afternoon with lunch. The gob was dense, moist, and contained a sugary white frosting between the bisected ball of cocoa. On the label it read "Hostetler's Bakery" in capital letters complete with a street address and telephone number. I must make the pilgrimage for olden wonder and rural warmth surely await me there.
