My experience here was very disappointing. My hair was 100% virgin hair and had never been dyed…read morebefore. I naturally have dark brown hair, and I came in with an inspiration picture asking for an autumn copper-brown reddish color. They were very confident that they could make the color I wanted happen, which made me feel comfortable moving forward with the service. After the first round, she was already getting ready to send me home, but I told her I was not happy with the results because my hair barely looked different from when I came in. It stayed mostly the same dark brown, except for some patchy plum-colored areas. I paid $120 for that first service. After I explained that I was unhappy, she recommended bleaching my hair to get me closer to the lighter copper-brown reddish color I originally asked for. What bothered me was that before starting the bleach, she never told me she would also be doing another client's hair color at the same time. While the bleach was sitting in my hair, there was one point where she was away for about 40 minutes. I was so nervous about the bleach sitting in my hair that I actually started a timer myself because I did not want anything to happen to my hair. She was also leaving at other times in between for around 20 to 30 minutes while working on the other client. I really wish my hair had been monitored more closely throughout the bleaching process, especially because of how light it ended up becoming. Instead of the autumn copper-brown reddish color from my inspiration picture, I ended up with orange and blonde hair. I paid another $230 for the second service, bringing my total to $350. I am extremely disappointed that I spent $350, went through two rounds of color and bleaching on previously virgin hair, and still did not receive anything close to what I originally asked for. If you have naturally dark virgin hair and are looking to go lighter, based on my experience, I would definitely not recommend this place.

He reached out for a conversation before I came in and I knew I was in good hands. And then I was BLOWN AWAY by what he was able to achieve!! I had expected it would take a few visits to get there. Justin knows hair!! There is a science and an art to color, especially for those of us wanting dimensional color. Justin has both expertise and artistry!! I'm just delighted. I want to also mention that the salon itself is lovely. Spacious and airy, with a sweet back patio. I loved the art, too. The whole experience was uplifting! Justin is easy to talk to, the vibes are chill. I'm including before and after photos in hopes that my review might help someone else in a similarly desperate situation. LONG STORY: My stylist in San Franciso retired and I made an appointment with TINA because she presented herself as an expert in hair straightening services. TINA confidently assured me of her many years of experience and familiarity with Keratin Straightening, Brazilian Blowout and Japanese Thermal Reconditioning. The appointment was a disaster. Not only did TINA appear unfamiliar with Japanese Thermal Reconditioning procedures, but she simultaneously worked on another client while treating my hair - this is something I have never experienced in 30 plus years of getting my hair chemically straightened. TINA sat me on her chair and went straight to applying the solution. She didn't bother assessing the quality of my hair or even washing it. Looking back, the instant she started working on me, I felt I was in trouble. Unfortunately I simply didn't want to believe that someone with 20 years of experience did not know what they were doing and I was being lied to. I finally spoke up while she was focused on the other client, as I had to alert her that my scalp was burning. By that point, significant damage had occurred. I now have blisters on my scalp, with patches of hair crisped and dead at the roots; my hair is so severely burned it's stuck to my scalp. What's left of my hair feels like Velcron - frizzy, dry and immovable. Since the treatment, I've been losing hair at an alarming rate -- I find burned strands broken hair and tufts of cuticled hair everywhere I turn. This experience has left me with visible bald patches and ongoing hair loss that constantly reminds me of the damage TINA had done. I had invested many years and thousands of dollars into maintaining my hair, I beat myself up every day for trusting TINA. This single appointment has undone decades of effort. If my hair cuticle is not damaged permanent, it will still take years for my hair to recover. The physical, financial, and emotional toll has been devastating. Once my scalp heals, I will need to be fitted for a wig, yet another expense incurred due to TINA's lies and incompetence. I asked for a one inch trim - she cut off at least 5 inches. In hindsight she chopped off my hair because she had burned it. As I walked back to my car I finally had a chance to touch my hair and felt the severity of the damage. I immediately returned and showed TINA the damage she had caused. She told me to come back for a conditioning treatment. I had to leave for another appointment, and I was in too much shock to even argue with her. I came back in a week later and TINA told me she wanted to do a Keratin Treatment on it!!!! I told her she wasn't getting anywhere near my hair again and asked for my money back. She refused; TINA attempted to place the blame on me, claiming the treatment failed because my hair was "too dry". She then had the audacity to tell me it's my fault because I told her I've had the service done before. Indeed I've had Japanese Thermal Reconditioning done countless times with excellent results by real experts who knew what they were doing. I couldn't believe TINA was not taking any responsibility. My only recourse was ask another stylist working at the salon to look at my scalp an touch my hair. At that point she got scared, broke out in hives and gave me a refund. Looks to me like she's willing to say and do anything to pay for the new house she's building down the street. This experience has been deeply distressing, and I hope it serves as a warning to others seeking any kind of service from TINA.

I went in for my second cut at Twist yesterday, with Tami, and it was even better than the first! My curly hair has never looked as good as with Tami's Deva cuts. I also received color and highlights from Aubrey and she did such an amazing job! It looks so natural. She started the highlights lower in the hair and made them more random and the shades she chose were perfect. The service at Twist is faultless and all their equipment is state-of-the-art, from the hair vacuum to the cool outerspace looking hairdryer to the super comfortable hair washing sinks. They have a nice selection of beverages they offer as well as tasty m&m's and an iPad you can play games on or surf the internet while your hair dries. Twist Salon has all the product you could need to complete your deva cut to look impeccably unfrizzy and they expertly train you on how to use it for salon-looking results. I highly recommend Twist Salon. Just get your appointments in right away as it can take months to get in...after one cut/color, you'll know why! Curly girls: this is heaven! read more

My first experience with Twist Salon in Alameda was last night. If I could give them 20 stars I would. The salon is beautiful and welcoming, the staff is also very welcoming. It feels like you're visiting a girlfriend instead of a beauty salon. I have naturally curly hair with lots of wave and cowlicks as well and in the almost 6 years that I have been in California this is the first time I got what I would call the perfect hair cut. Rebecca was my stylist and she is amazing. She herself has long curly hair and takes her time looking at your hair, how it lays, where the curls are, what shape would look the best on you. Twist is a full service salon. They wash your hair and cut it wet which is something most salons don't do anymore. I'v been a client of DJ for 8 years, and he is the best. I'm delighted that he is teaming up with Tami at her new salon, Twist, in Alameda. At the previous SF salon, I would see Tami when I came to see DJ. She is such a sweet person, and really understands curly locks! If you'e seen her beautiful locks, you know instantly she's an expert. Love her and her lovely personality! Now, back to my DJ . . . DJ is supremely talented and his expertise ranges from cut, color, straight hair, curly locks, and, he is a talented wedding/special occasion hair stylist and make-up artist. When my regular sytlist DJ was out for a month to have knee surgery, I had Aubrey do my hair. She was a delight and I liked what she did. DJ is back now and I've had one appointment with him since his return. As before, my hair was perfect when I walked out of the salon. One thing I really love about DJ is that while we can talk and chat about various things, we can also be quiet. DJ concentrates on what he's doing at times, so although we may seem quiet for a few moments, I'm just happy letting him do what he does so well. I think this is the best salon in the East Bay. Tami is the best hair stylist I have ever been too and I only wish I met her years ago. Not only is she incredibly skilled at cutting, styling and coloring hair--she teaches her clients with great patience and warmth on how to care for your hair. I've never in my life felt so confident about my hair--which is has never looked better and is so much easier to manage. I really, really love her organic hair products as well. Let's say I'm of an age that I've been to a few salons - this is the best haircut, color, and overall salon treatment, at the hands of DJ, that I have EVER received. And best of all, the salon is in Alameda! DJ is fantastic - I have never had anyone spend so much time and be so careful - and the result is obvious. I had my hair highlighted by DJ. Wow! He explains everything, knows his stuff and has a wonderful attention to detail. My highlights look beautiful and I love the fact that the salon uses ORGANIC color (it's holding better than the chemically stuff ever did!). I had my 3rd appointment with DJ on Friday. I've never been happier with my hair color and cut. The color is a moonbeam blonde and I have people stop me on the street to comment on how great it is. DJ also gives the best head massage I've ever had in my life. The shop is immaculate and very attractive and comfortable. I have paid a lot more for a lot less. Every time I go to Twist I feel pampered and relaxed. My stylist is Tami, although DJ has lately joined her, and both are excellent at what they do. Tami has tamed my wavy/curly hair, and yesterday I got new highlights. I highly recommend her . She listens to you and gives you advise on how to maintain a healthy hair. Yesterday was my first visit to Twist to get my hair cut. Rebecca did a great job on my curly hair using the Deva method of dry cutting curly hair to preserve and enhance the existing curls and waves. I am trying the sulfur free products as well. For one, the parking was very convenient and I was able to get my patient up to the suite safely by using a call box to get in and up the elevator. Upon arriving into the suite the first thing I noticed was how clean and nicely decorated it was. It smelled great and had a very welcoming environment. The daughter went first and we sat in the lobby, when it was time for my client to go in she felt very comfortable and welcomed. Cynthia was very kind and helpful. She gave the clients exactly what they asked for! The process was quick, efficient and made the ladies feel confident. Not only when you step away from that appointment, but ideally for at least a few weeks after the appointment. Trying to maintain the wrong cut and trying to keep it looking fresh is a struggle within itself and what has been happening to me for most of my life. I now know that is because all along I've need a Hairapist, not a "Stylist". So then comes the day I entered this dope little salon for my appointment with LaTasha the Hairapist. Let's start with the vibe of her salon - so aesthetically lit, I'd want to have a private cocktail party in there. So pretty and decorated so fly! LaTasha has a warmth about her that is so welcoming, from the moment you step inside this hair sanctuary of hers. And when you sit in her chair, the magic begins and lasts not only after your appointment is over (and I didn't want it to end, trust!) but for weeks/months afterwards! I'm currently at 2 months and my hair is still looking right thanks to her technique as well as all of the knowledge she instilled in me during our session. I've seen others on here refer to LaTasha as a curl whisperer, a hair goddess - well, she certainly is. I felt so spoiled by her treatment of my hair and scalp while in the bowl, and while in her chair as she gave me the most transformational cut, that brought to life all the layers of curls that were hiding underneath my straight heavy pieces. The curls came to life before my eyes, and I am geeking like nobody's business!! Because of the tips she gave me during our session, I have been able to easily maintain my fabulous new do, even while being as busy as I am. I'm excited to be back in her chair next week to receive the magic again, and to hang with this unique woman, so filled with light and an incomparable love for her passion! 15 years of experience is nothing short of amazing when she pours all of that, plus her passion, into transforming your hair and sending you off floating on a cloud. I'm so grateful I was referred to LaTasha through a friend, and mark my words, you won't ever catch me in another chair besides this gifted Hairapist's chair. Next time it's about to be a photoshoot, I wish I'd taken pics the first time! THANK YOU LATASHA! You've changed my life!

I have seen her twice now for a keratin treatment and she welcomed me with so much love, warmth, and a nice cup of coffee. We hit it off right away. She is so well-spoken, sociable, and genuinely cares about each and every client she has (which is why I keep coming back!) She's a pure expert. My hair is really frizzy and dry and had no hope whatsoever. But I didn't want to cut my hair either. Tik restored it with a keratin treatment and now I'm addicted to getting keratin for my hair. It is sooooo healthy now and I'm not as self conscious as I used to be. She has made me feel so beautiful and I'm so grateful to know her!!! Highly recommend :) I love love love her!!
