Stopped by here for a Sunday dinner. The food was delicious- I got the coconut noodle soup and my partner got the pad kra pao. The service was wonderful. The restaurant was swamped with patrons, some dine in and many others getting take out. Although there were only two front of house staff, they still made the time and effort to be attentive, keep our glasses full, and bring some additional chili sauce I asked for. We were amazed and impressed by the customer service and food and will definitely be coming back again soon! read more

I think this place deserves some more attention. Their food is solid and the staff takes great care of you. They're happy to make emendations to dishes in order to work with allergies, or people that think they have a gluten intolerance ;) They bring you some nice soup before the meal and also have good lunch prices/options, and they have plenty of seating area. I've only been to this restaurant about 30x since it opened. So it's time for a review! Though the Durham location has the larger menu, I think that there's some truth in that smaller menu-better food notion. It's filled with deliciousness up in here and at a better price than many others. Favorites include: any of the curries, the drunken noodles. That said, a few caveats: When dining for lunch, they have a small restaurant, that sometimes will push you past your allotted break time, which is really very frustrating, but still tasty. For take-out, order 15 minutes ahead, they need it. If you want it to be spicy (I mean SPICY), you have to say "thai-spicy" and they will then instruct you that they will not accept returns if you can't take the heat. For me, even that is a "9". They have an extra charge for the seafood/duck, and what you get is not going to be a large portion of it in your meal. Be forewarned. They didn't not like the way you asked for it, or find you worthy. This is just how they roll. This does not apply to the chicken or tofu, in my experience. read more

Very solid and decently authentic Thai restaurant in Chapel Hill... and one of the only ones in the nearby area! I've been coming to Twisted Noodles ever since it opened, and it's stayed pretty consistent after all these years. If you're going for dinner, expect to pay $10+ for your meal, if everyone in your party is ordering an entree. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend going during lunch on a weekday, where the lunch specials make the most popular dishes much more affordable. The past few times that I've gone to Twisted Noodles have all been during lunch, so among my friends and I, we've probably ordered all of the items on the lunch specials menu. My personal favorite is the Pad Thai, which I find to be perfectly portioned and not too heavy in flavor. (In fact, I'm pretty sure Twisted Noodles is the place that first introduced me to the Pad Thai dish...) I've had Pad Thai from some restaurants that are way too heavy because there is too much sauce on the noodles, but that's not the case at all at Twisted Noodles. The Noodle Soup lunch special is significantly smaller in portion, and if you're looking for an even lighter option, this is the dish for you... for the people who crave flavor, you may find the noodle soup to be a little too bland. The salad and spring roll that comes with the lunch special are definitely nothing too extraordinary. The dishes outside of the lunch special are more expensive but also much larger in their portions. I don't remember ever being able to finish the regular-sized Pad Thai and always bringing a box home. One great thing about Twisted Noodles is their flexibility when it comes to the protein that comes with your dish. Every single Thai dish comes with a protein, and you can choose from chicken, beef, pork, tofu, chicken, shrimp, and vegetables for no additional charge. You can pay extra money to get more luxurious proteins like crab or scallops, which I never wind up getting, but it's great to have that level of variety to suit customer preferences. I've also never found Twisted Noodles to be super crowded even though the venue isn't the largest. I find the ambiance to be enjoyable since it has a lot of natural lighting from the large windows. I haven't had extensive interactions with the staff either, meaning that they do what they need to do to get the job done. Overall, no super negative or super memorable experiences at Twisted Noodles, but it still does come to mind when I'm in the mood for Thai and in Chapel Hill! read more

I noticed Twisted Noodles raised the price of the noodle dish I typically order. Price was a big reason for my 5 stars earlier, and now it's not as appealing. I wish they had some form of discount for frequent customers or takeout orders. I think it's still lower priced than other thai places (but $10.70 for noodles is still expensive in NC!) but with this change, I'll be checking out those other places. I do wish they would abolish tipping though, just read this paragraph: Studies have shown that tipping is not an effective incentive for performance in servers. It also creates an environment in which people of color, young people, old people, women, and foreigners tend to get worse service than white males. In a tip-based system, nonwhite servers make less than their white peers for equal work. Consider also the power imbalance between tippers, who are typically male, and servers, 70 percent of whom are female, and consider that the restaurant industry generates five times the average number of sexual harassment claims per worker. And that in many instances employers have allegedly misused tip credits, which let owners pay servers less than minimum wage if tipping makes up the difference. Not familiar in the Durham area and found this place driving by. I decided to give it a try and ordered panang shrimp. It was like a soup with 8 shrimp and some slices of red and green pepper for $15 and a bowl of rice. The flavor was decent. No utensils for takeout offered. The service was very nice and food came out within minutes. But for the price, I can get more food for better price elsewhere. Their lunch menu only has a limited time to order lunch but does not say limited to weekdays only. read more

This place is a cozy little Thai spot on E Franklin. I went here during my lunch break and was immediately greeted by a hostess. The prices were great, the food was really good and the waiter was friendly and very attentive. I did have a little issue with my food arriving cold, but once I told the waiter he apologized and immediately took it back to have it remade. He also kept my cup full. Now that's what I call good service! Also, although the bathroom was quite odd, due to having two toilet bowls in a bathroom that is meant for one, it was clean. This is one of our main restaurants and glad to see them back in the game after a brief red curry slump. It has gotten better each time since new mgmt in fall of 2018. One daughter and I typically have seafood red curry and it was very good the last time we ate here. Steamed pork dumplings were also wonderful. Pad thai is also a staple here. Twisted Noodle has lost a star from me today for two reasons: 1) They got rid of the student discount. Which means on my Med School budget, I won't be eating $16 seafood pad thai very often. 2) There were several muscle shell pieces in my pad thai today. Which I completely understand is an honest mistake, but it was still really annoying to have to pick it out piece by piece and inspect every scoop of food so I didn't end up eating a piece. I really really wanted to like this place but I can't say I do. I do however think customer service is excellent. Staff is super friendly soo A+ for that. However, the food doesn't live up to the hype l. I got fried gyoza with no gyoza sauce, wontons that look/taste like I bought them straight from the freezer section at a grocery store. & pad ew was okay but nothing special. The noodles really couldn't hold the weight of any extra proteins of anything else added so it made it a bit hard to eat. The food just really isn't it but the customer service is exemplary. Hearing about the restaurant being newly renovated, I had to try it out! I was very pleased to see the ambience and the vibe of the place is very comforting. Its a nice casual place to go for a nice dinner! Definitely a place to hang around and have a nice chat and eat some authentic Thai food. You know... I wish they didn't have any curries on their menu, because I should have ordered something else.. maybe a noodle dish like the name of this restaurant implied (my bad). We came here because another restaurant was full and we were hungry. Unfortunately, the hunger didn't help the taste of the food much. We ordered 1. Penang shrimp curry - the better of the two, which isn't saying much. It was ok-ish. I ordered 4/5 heat that tasted strongly of peanut butter but little else, so maybe 3/5 heat at best. This was a one note dish that made me think I could've bought a fancy spice packet at Whole Foods and called it a day. I mean, if I shopped at Whole Foods. 2. Thai peanut chicken - my husband ordered this so I don't even know if this was a curry but man, did it taste bad. I stole one bite (karma) and needed to go home and drink some beer to wash it out. The sauce was sweet (waiter forgot to ask him what spice level - that's how I should've known we weren't at the right place) and almost inedible. The best affordable thai food in the triangle. Archira thai was up there, but it's closed now. The wide rice noodle dishes are spectacular. Highly recommend their signature dish, twisted yellow curry noodles and the drunken noodles. They run about $10.95 apiece. Decor isn't anything special, but the food more than makes up for that. We used to love getting takeout from here, however recently it has come under New Management. They no longer have Crying Tiger, which was one of our go to's, and instead have Nam Tok salad. It contains the saddest and most uninspired looking beef, is covered and onions, and there is no lettuce to speak. To add insult to injury they charged me $14 for this inedible mess. We also got Tom Kha soup, usually it is a blend of broth and coconut milk, but this was literally all coconut broth and lemon juice. I will say the Pad Thai was good, but it's pretty hard to mess that up. Would advise to avoid and spend your money elsewhere. read more

We had looked forward to trying this place for awhile. We went in for a late lunch (around 1:30 pm), and seated ourselves, as no one seemed to be available to seat us. The chairs are extremely uncomfortable, and it was surprising that there were a few people lingering over lunch. A waiter finally came and gave us our menus, which seemed to be a good representation of popular Thai foods. We both chose the Pad Thai dish (my wife's with beef, and mine with porK). The lunch special came with a salad and "crab rangoon." (I substituted a vegetable spring roll for the crab rangoon, telling the waiter that I have an allergy to seafood.) The salad side dish (which comes with the lunch special) had a choice of peanut or sesame dressing. Neither was appealing, but they didn't have any other choices. I chose the peanut, and was overwhelmed with the heaviness of the sauce, (not a "dressing" ) which was way too heavy for the iceberg lettuce. When the main dishes were served, I took the first bite of mine (the pork Pad Thai) and it tasted as if the dish was cooked in rancid oil. I took a taste of my wife's (the beef Pad Thai) and hers also tasted rancid. We summoned the waiter and complained about the food. He said that the oil was changed "every day," so it was unlikely that it was rancid. However, he did mention that it was cooked in fish sauce. (It's too bad that he didn't say this when we first ordered, telling him that I was allergic to seafood!) It's fortunate that I didn't eat more of the "suspiciously rancid" dish because my seafood allergy would have made for an ugly emergency. The waiter offered to substitute my lunch dish for something else, but couldn't really tell me what wasn't cooked in fish sauce. My wife, who had first said "not my favorite dish," upon first tasting hers, could now taste the fish sauce in her beef pad thai, and lost her appetite. We left, not having eaten lunch, but having lost our appetites. read more

I thought it was absolutely scrumptious for a lunch special -- $6.99 got me a chicken Pad Thai and salad with a sweet lime dressing that was filling, and I'm a hungry boy. I was alone that night, and I must admit, I was feeling too lonely. She was a full-figured woman. Plump from a summer's fattening and parading a perfume of braised meats and egg noodles. God, I'm still thinking about those morsels of gelatin freckling her skin. I can't lie and say it was a guilt-ridden decision. I dove in unabashed, guided by my starving heart. There was no foreplay, no idle chatter. She filled my mouth with her duck breasts. Their roasted red skin bowing outwards ever so slightly. And beneath those- a sinful layer of soft, seductive fat. Maybe it was an off day, but my recent lunch here left me ruefully disappointed. First, the chairs. ZOMG. They have a metal bar that supports the top third of the seat, placing it directly below the tailbone. Ladies & gentlemen, make no mistake: I have a good bit o' booty on me, and I was still incredibly uncomfortable the entire meal! And the thing is, it's not like they sacrificed function for form -- the chairs are fug! Now, they had one guy heading up the entire dining room, during lunch hour; it was no problem when we arrived, as they weren't busy yet. And he was good about taking orders at multiple times (since we had folks arriving staggered), and kept the waters refilled. But when a couple of us needed our checks so we could run off to a meeting, we did have to stand up and track him down because at that point the poor guy had 8-10 tables, and was being pulled in so many directions. The food. I ordered off the lunch menu, opting for the papaya and fried chicken salad with rice. While the portions were impressive all around, this dish did not deliver. I could not taste papaya at all -- potentially it was under-ripe, but it was also overwhelmed with a very strong sour sauce coating the salad. My chicken appeared pan-fried rather than deep fried. The crust was over-cooked, splintered and chewy; the meat totally dry. I did like the jasmine rice. But that won't be enough to keep me coming back! Don't let this 3 star review mislead you...this is a gushing 3+ stars![1] In my last three attempts in several months of traversing the Triangle for decent Thai, we finally ventured into our own backyard to try some Thai food here at TN at Eastgate. I was lamenting the sad state of affairs for decent Thai food. TN saved the day and let me tell ya'...it's pretty darn good considering that I'm comparing this to west coast standards. Out west, this would garner a 2++ stars which isn't half bad. But for convenience to us Hill people and a decent serving size as well as moderately priced (compared to elsewhere in ye olde Triangle)...well, it's hard to knock this place down. I only hesitate on giving it more, b/c I still think Sewasdee (even with it's higher price) is just slightly better authenticity/quality for the area. Pleasant service for take out and a quick turn around as promised (only 15 minutes). No worries b/c we shopped across the street and came back to find our food awaiting our hungry stomachs. Next time, I'll follow the queue of others and call it in for pick up - they had a healthy line of food waiting tobe picked up. The good thing is they are open "late" until 10pm - esp. great if you're hit with a Thai craving in this neck of the woods! What did we have? We had to order the usual noodle dish - pad kee mao[2] with chicken - coupled with their version of a vegetarian penang curry[3], all to go. Overall the dishes were good - much tastier than the last place[4] I ventured into and helluva better than the one[5] before that. The PKM was tasty and authentic with nice flavours and lots of soft rice noodles to boot. I found the Penang a bit on the sweeter side and slightly watery, but still pretty decent. The best thing about both dishes were the portions - big enough for 2 meals for both of us[6]. Spice-wise, I wasn't impressed....but I didn't explicitly request anything over the top here. Next time, I'd be more inclined to specify that I want the dish to "melt my innards" when I have an intense craving for spicy....and you might too if you crave the heat. OVERALL: Great take-out service, great prices, good portions, authentic taste although a bit on the sweet side, and a bit lacking on the spice - but I think the last point is easily correctable with explicit directions when ordering. 3+ stars! TN has become my local "go to" joint in the CH area and that makes me a happy camper....:D Now...if I venture out of CH anytime in the next few months (hopefully with kid in tow)....maybe I'll try the sister store in Durham! I agree with other Yelpers that Twisted Noodles in Chapel Hill has gone downhill in the last year or so. I might give them one more chance during lunch (when they have specials), but never again at dinner. Here's why: We visited on a Friday evening at 5:45 PM, and were one of only two parties in the place. By the time we left at 6:30 PM, there were maybe five tables full, so it was never very busy. The appetizers we ordered -- the Fried Spring Rolls and Vegetable Gyozas -- were both let-downs. The Fried Spring Rolls are very small, only 2 come in an order, and they aren't very flavorful, just greasy. The Vegetable Gyozas -- listed as a special -- had hardly any filling inside (like maybe half a teaspoon) but lots of doughy, undercooked dough. The garnishes on both were clearly days old: yellowing kale and browning shreds of carrot. Their Pad Thai is pretty good, but other places will give you more: more peanuts, more bits of scrambled egg, more scallions. For what you are served at Twisted Noodles, $9.95 seems expensive. The Pad See Yew had overcooked noodles and very overcooked, almost chewy tofu. The Massaman Curry had a flavorful curry sauce, but overcooked carrots and potatoes -- both were beginning to dissolve. Not worth $11.95. The above dinner (three entrees, all made with tofu as the protein, and two appetizers, plus one soda), came to $48 before the tip. That is way too much money for so little flavor and such obvious cutting of corners. It's really too bad -- Twisted Noodles was more reliable and higher quality a year or so ago. Okay! First yelp review. I feel that I have opinions, and they should be known. Also, I am always late to social media movements. I lacked a go-to Thai place before Twisted Noodles moved to the neighborhood. Now I get take out at least every other week. Usually when I want Thai take out I want boring comfort food, which means pad thai or curries. Their pad thai used to be really fabulous, but I feel that it has lost a little bit of that peanut-y goodness. This also might be because I am ordering it with only vegetables now (in my attempt to get more greens), but on that note it is great that they do veggie-only. They also ask whether or not I want egg in my pad thai when I order veggie-only, which means that they can be vegan friendly. Vegans take note. Spring rolls are standard goodness, hits the spot but nothing amazing. I think the drunken noodles are fantastic, greasy, carby goodness. The curries are a plus as well, I like the yellow. The restaurant is small and can get extremely crowded around 7:00. I have seen lines out the door on a Tuesday. Also I always feel that the servers are a little rushed. Hence why I usually get take out. I call on my way home from work and they have it ready in ten minutes. Perfect. In short, great neighborhood take out place. Great Thai comfort foods. Anywhere else people would roll their eyes but for Chapel Hill it is much better than average. read more

My wife and I go here maybe 3-4 times per year and it is always fine. It took a half dozen visits or so to figure out the stuff that's decent, namely the fried drunken noodles (which is nothing close to real Thai food), the spicy eggplant with pork and shrimp and the beef noodle soup. The larb is sad and gray, the curries are nowhere near fresh and the two times I've gotten Tom Yum it has been so chock full of lemongrass that it's been inedible. Face it -- there's no good Thai food in Chapel Hill or Carrboro, so the bar is pretty low. Also a note on 'vegetarian' -- even super authentic and amazing places like Jitlada in LA and Chao Thai in Queens make vegetarian dishes without fish sauce or oyster sauce. They can accommodate it if you say you can't eat seafood, but I don't think they are out to mislead anyone. read more

I hate to say it, but this restaurant is for people who have so little choice--they mistake it for a good Thai restaurant. The dishes are very dicey. Meaning, some of the vegetables had turned (two times). Baby corn had gone bad, and broccoli that was actually moldy! My friend from Hong Kong ordered an authentic Chinese dish, and it was okay he said. BUT so so small for the price. Coconut based curry is watered down...a pet peeve of mine and the mark of a BAD ThaI place. I say, a definite NO GO. Service is also not good. They did not apologize when the veggies were bad. I will begin by saying this restaurant serves authentic Thai food. It serves it quickly, and it serves it with it's own special, unique, family flair. My litmus test of any Thai place is the Pad Kee Mao, or Drunken Noodles. This is a dish made with wide rice noodles, stir fried with veggies, meat, and a dash of egg. Each thai chef has their own take on the sauce for this dish, but it can be generally thought of as sweet, spicy thai curry. This establishment provides a delicious Pad Kee Mao redolent of the Seattle Thai restaurants I frequented in my youth. Spicy, savory, full of delicious flavors and textures. Their curries are tame, unless you prod them to add "thai spice." Then, your eyeballs might bleed. The service is courteous and quick. The menu varied and generous. I like. read more

It's got a very friendly vibe. My only gripe with the restaurant is lack of high chairs. The staff was very friendly and took care of us. I first tried their Duck noodle soup. I had it for take out and the aroma and flavor of the broth was incredible. Garlicky, rich and flavorful. The duck was nicely cooked and the noodles were good. When we ate at the restaurant, the kitchen accidentally gave us the extra meat version, but the waiter brought us some noodles and didn't charge us for the extra meat. That was cool, because I wouldn't have paid extra for their mistake. I've had their food several times for take out now. Their Pad Thai is not the sweet style, but very flavorful and rich. The noodles are orange brown with flavor. I've had it with chicken and its very good. I like the Pad Thai at Twisted Noodle over Thai Palace, because they will adjust the spicyness to whatever you want. Be warned, their hot is a little hotter than what I thought it would be. Their fried chicken rice was surprisingly good the other day. It's not a greasy over-battered chicken, but almost panko style. The crust is crisp and light and the chicken was still moist. It's served over garlic fried rice, which was really tasty. Garlic in rice? So simple, yet so genius. This has become my new favorite Thai place in Chapel Hill. I've always had great service, whether it be from cruising by and picking up (which is like a 10 to 15 minute turnaround time) or sitting down or dining in, its been a hit. Some of the other noodle dishes are just "ok," which is a little bit of a downer, but the tastiness of all the other dishes on the menu really make up for it. Meh. This place has average Thai food. I'm a huge fan of Thai food so I guess I came here with some expectations. I've been here about 2-3 times and their food has just been okay. I have tried their Pad See Ew and their Pad Thai. Their Pad Thai seems a little tasteless to me, which was a little disappointing. Nonetheless, their portions are pretty big! My boyfriend and I recently starting going to this place, and go almost once a week now. I'm kinda surprised at all the negative reviews. I always get the Drunken Noodles with tofu. It's filling, full of flavor, there's an ample portion of flavorful tofu, and the noodles are so much fun to eat. I've also gotten the Pad Thai with chicken and once with tofu. If you're a tofu eater, I highly recommend getting any dish with tofu over chicken. The chicken tends to be a bit dry, whereas the tofu is served in a larger portion and not at all dry. I also highly recommend the Panang Curry...always my favorite curry and Twisted Noodles does it right. We've also gotten the chicken wings, Thai rolls, and Thai Iced Coffee...always satisfying! The wait staff is so courteous and kind. The decor is weird and great. This isn't the best Thai food I've ever had, but it is the best Thai food I've ever had in Chapel Hill. read more

Let's get this out of the way first.. it currently shows on the yelp page that you get $5 off a $25 bill if you mention you saw them on yelp. Well that was news to our server, who insisted they have no deals at all with yelp. This was especially annoying considering we ordered extra food just to reach the $25 threshold. So here's your warning if you plan to do the same. Onto the food.. this was my first time at the Chapel Hill location after a couple visits to the Durham one. I thought the food was comparable. We got the chicken satay, pad thai and drunked noodles. Pretty fair on pricing, portions are decent, and food is tasty as well. My gf who is a bit of a twisted noodles fanatic thought it wasn't as good and a bit too oily. They also didn't have the pickled jalapenos in the pepper tray which made her sad. Do ask for the peppers if you go there because it significantly enhances the food, especially if you like some kick. Service wasn't great even before the offer refusal. It took them several minutes before they even acknowledged us and asked for drink orders. I also went far too long with an empty water glass which was particularly problematic due to my heavy-handedness with the peppers. If this rating was for the food alone, it'd probably get another star. But all-in-all, I'm not sure I'll be in a rush to go back after that experience. read more

do not waste your time here! I decided to check this spot out as it was within walking distance of the University Inn. It was essentially the only non-sandwich or pizza option in the area. I ordered the vegetarian pad see ew. this consisted of thick rice noodles, broccoli, fried egg, and tofu. the dish was plain sloppy. the tofu pieces were HUGE and oddly shaped/cut. this is not how you serve tofu. in addition, I've had pad see ew in the past; the noodles should also be cut to an appropriate eating size and should not be the size of linguine pasta. I was truly shocked at the quality of this dish as this is a chain and in order to have functioning branches, people must like your food. plus, this restaurant is very structured via social media and this is definitely misleading. lastly, I paid $12 for a vegetarian dish in a strip mall. coming from chicago, this is excessively overpriced. read more
