    Best butcher shop in town
    Sally H.

We have been here before. This family owned/run shop has fun choices. We got duck last time. I loved the sign with information on getting a freshly shot deer all processed and ready for cooking. I had not seen this service available in southern California. The staff gal seemed a bit bored until I made a joke and then she brightened up and was friendly. On the weekends, the staff set up smokers and BBQs in the parking lot. The food is great. Shall I try the allegator next time???

Didn't make it inside the butcher shop this time because we forgot our cooler...and it's over an hour drive so we didn't want to chance it. Heard first hand their sausages were great though! Anyways, we did try their BBQ stand they have setup outside in front of the store! We ordered pretty much everything to give it a try. Pulled pork sandwich on a kaiser roll, bbq half chicken, ribs, and beef brisket. Everything tasted great and we would definitely drive out here again!

Just paid $8 for a plate of tough chewy fat that they pass off for brisket out in their parking lot stand. Don't waist your time or money.

My friends and I came here because BBQ is most definitely the way to go after a long day of hiking…read more I'm surprised there's no other reviews of Wandering Joe's on Yelp despite it opening almost a year ago in July 2021. However, Google reviews were positive, so we were pretty excited. It's right next to a meadery called "Saga Meadery & Winery". Definitely a good choice buying both BBQ and some mead to go with it (which is what one of my friends did and thoroughly enjoyed it). Wandering Joe's is a mom-and-pop shop, and both owners were kind and helpful when we ordered. Here were my thoughts: LEMONADE - 2 Lots of ice, but it comes in a 16 oz. cup. The lemonade was perfectly refreshing and I downed all of that within five minutes or so. It went well with our food and it was just what I needed after a long hike. It was also not too sweet and more on the citrusy/fruity side. Even as I'm writing this review six hours later, I'm still thinking about that lemonade. SMOKED MEAT PLATTER - 15 This comes with 1/2 a pound of meat, 2 sides along with pickles, onions, sauce, and 2 slices of white bread on the side. The pricing is good and comes with a good amount of food. My friends and I all got some variation of the platter. One of my friends and I got the chopped beef for my meat option, but we thought the seasoning and sauce on it was way too salty. Even eating this with the bread didn't help. The rib tips that our other friends got was not too salty and good BBQ flavor. But the texture was inconsistent - some pieces were super tender and delicious, but others were incredibly dry and hard to chew. Overall, we weren't quite impressed with the meat. As for the sides, I thought the smoked pintos were very tasty and the texture of the beans were just right. I also liked the parmesan crumbles mixed in. The grits were also fantastic! It had a few pieces of pork on top along with more parmesan. I'd highly recommend it. I tried the other two options that my friends got. I liked that the slaw was very crunchy and sweet (from the apple pieces). The esquites were cold but I liked them like that. My one friend who got them did not enjoy it as much, so I guess it's a preference thing. I'd recommend trying any of the sides as they were satisfactory. Wandering Joe's is a Tex Mex restaurant, so they also have tacos and queso & chips here. Sadly, we didn't try either or, but have seen good reviews about it on Google. Overall, it was a 3/5 but the owners were really nice and the restaurant is still pretty new, so I'll bump the rating to a 4/5.

Well I did this but when we got there, they said they don't allow that on weekends...but how was I suppose to know this. It's not posted on their website. But I explained we didn't know, it's our first trip and had traveled from northern Va, the staff was very nice and the mgr accommodated us. They were busy so service was not fast but we were ok with it. As for the food, maybe it's a locals thing with calling this the best pizza ever but for us, it was definitely NOT the best pizza nor the top 10! Sorry but my first clue was when our pizza came out and all I see was sliced CANNED mushrooms! I love mushrooms but not canned mushrooms on pizza...and there was so much toppings that we couldn't even tell if there were any cheese. The thin crust was good but overall, we just couldn't relate to the people that called their pizza the best. Sorry. Their wings were a good size and tasted good though. Mozzarella sticks were meh and cheesesteak didn't have much steak. The garlic cheese bread with mushrooms sounds good until....it had canned mushrooms again lol. With that said, front royal is not the place for pizza.
