These guys are awesome. I purchased an All City Zig Zag Ultegra from them a little over a year ago. Love the steel frame, it's super comfy. Not sure what to make about the negative reviews. Quick, friendly service, despite Curbside Service Only, due to COVID-19. The rear derailleur on my bike broke and needed to be replaced. Initially TWD wasn't sure if they would be able to find a compatible derailleur for my Motobacane bike, however I left my bike with them and they'd call me we other an update, citing about a week before the bike might be fixed. Lo and behold, I received a call in less than 24 hours telling me my bike was all fixed and ready to pick up! I've found my new favorite bike shop! read more

I have never been to a retail store where the employees spent most of their time convincing you to save money and to forego the expensive, trendy, fancy items, though excellent, and go for the excellent, barebone items. Two Wheel Drive does that. They are all about biking, not about making a fashion statement. They are honest and knowledgeable about all things bike. And they are a nice bunch of friendly guys, too. They don't act like they know more than you, though they probably do, and that's also important. I found out about Two Wheel Drive from a friend who uses his bike as his only mode of transportation. That's important, because if you need your bike to get everywhere, you need a place that's reliable and inexpensive. My husband and I were just moving to Albuquerque and I needed to have my bike sent out here, since we didn't have enough room in either of our overstuffed cars. This meant the bike had to be disassembled, which my husband did on the Michigan side and we sent the bike straight to Two Wheel Drive where they reassembled the bike perfectly. Since then, I've been back numerous times mainly to get accessories, plus twice when I got a flat tire from riding over a couple of goat heads. These guys fixed me up and now I know all about indestructible inner tubes and goo. read more

This place is great. The team is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. The shop itself is a great space to go in and browse (when it's not COVID times) During this pandemic, they are really handling themselves and their customers well. Their love for cycling shows as they are working non-stop to get through a ton of repairs so everyone can get back on their machines and ride! They will serve you curbside if you don't want to come in or just need to make a simple purchase. As of this review they can only allow two customers in at a time. They give total attention to each one and do not rush. Some unmasked customers came in while I was there. They didn't wait in line and did not follow the instructions that Two Wheel Drive clearly had posted. The guys were very polite in explaining to them that they need to wait outside. I called two wheel drive yesterday to inquire about hand cycles. A hand cycle is usually a trike adapted with a crank mounted above the handlebars and even an e assist if you're lucky. I am a SCI partial para "my legs don't work but are moveable. The person on the phone was polite and professional. He said they have worked on only one hand cycle in the past. I asked about building one and he just pushed rite past the subject telling me that the components are usually all hand made. I told him that I have a local aerospace machinist with a cnc mill that can make anything we need. He still would not even consider a build. I give 4 stars because after that he proceeded to give me various resources where I can find specialty parts to build one. That tells me that they have the resources to build a hand cycle but just don't want to do it. I can understand that there may be liability issues involved there and thank two wheel drive for being the best bike shop I called in Albuquerque concerning my needs. I felt like they really engaged with me and at least gave me some good advice. read more

You know you love it when the fee schedule says $30 for a fixeroo but the guy says, "yeah but your problem was just too easy... 8 bucks" not only because you just saved some dough, but because for them, it's not just about the money, it's about extremely high consideration of customer service and a love for the zen of bicycle maintenance. My crank stripped out and I had a bad tube so I walked my bike into Two Wheel Drive. The staff was very cool and they just jumped right on it so I wouldn't have to leave the bike with them overnight. This was good because I could do some undercover yelpstealth. They've been rockin the corner of University and Central for 30 years. (You know that scene where ET and the kids are flying away on dirt bikes? That's what they started out on.) Since then 3 big corporate gigs have come into town and done scooped up most of the traditional bike sales. To adapt Two Wheel has come to specialize in exotic bikes like Teratrike recliners, dual bikes, Electra cruisers, Surly fat tire, fatter tire, and "damn, your tire so fat, it make your fat mama look like she's riding a Big Wheel!" Sorry they don't actually sell Big Wheel and I'm tempted to strip one star for that... They do have great sales on Bianchi road bikes. And a bike coop where you can scrounge for used parts. read more

My partner and I have been to this shop on 3 different occasions because we live very close by. I want to like this place, but leave dissatisfied with customer service every time. To spare everyone the details, I will just say that if you have a simple fix that needs repair (e.g. a bolt that is too tight to undo, front derailleur that needs simple adjustment, a little oil application to your chain), I would go to the Bike Coop. They are willing to take 2 minutes to assess and diagnose your problem, tell you what you need or do a tiny bit of work to make your bike functional. Two-wheel drive appears too busy for that or it's simply not worth their time. read more

I'd been wanting to buy a good first road bike for my wife, something in the $1k range. We'd tried a number of stores who were happy to show us a few bikes, adjust the seat and let her ride around a parking lot. this allowed her to tell whether the bike was a totally bad fit or not or if the seat needed to be raised or lowered, but for $1k there wasn't a lot most shops wanted to do to ensure a good fit: "here are our 2 bikes in that price range, feel free to try them out". Then we went to Two Wheel Drive. Walking in you can tell this is a bike nerd's bike shop. Most of the inventory is hanging from the ceiling so they can pack as much in as possible. The staff are quick to greet you even if they're in the middle of truing a wheel or re-assembling a bottom bracket. This was the case for us. We were quickly guided to about 3 or 4 options including some closeouts from last year. We chose one, and were treated to the best bike fitting I'd ever seen: the bike placed on a stand, my wife riding it while we swapped out stems, seats and moved the seat up, down, forward and back. 30 minutes later when she had a custom fit, they welcomed me to grab a bike so we could go rider "for however long it takes. The bike trail is just on the other side of UNM". My wife ended up liking her (custom fit) bike (go figure), and I happened to pick a steel frame that was also a later model steel frame on which they were looking to cut a deal. We walked out with two excellent bikes and shorts for a great deal, all with a smiling staff waving "good bye". I HIGHLY recommend Two Wheel Drive for your next bike purchase or service. read more

Had a flat this morning. Yelped and found this place. I have to say this is the best bike shop I've been to. The guy, Charlie, was super nice and friendly. He fixed my tires and gave me recommendations above & beyond the call of duty. I was able to save my tubes and saved money because he didn't gouge me by telling me I had to buy this or that. I will definitely be back, when my damn tires go flat again! They also have a really cute dog that hangs out in the store. I guess he knows not to leave the front door. Thanks 2Wheels. read more

This shop is not really customer oriented...which is a problem for any business. I've been in there twice now and never once was approached by an employee no matter how long I had been standing there or browsing around. When I did get someone to talk to me the answers were spartan at best and wrong at worst. I asked a question about rim tape knowing what the answer should be...they got it wrong and I had to correct them to get the right product. Personally, I like a bike shop that helps you learn about what you have and opens up options for what you might like. Unfortunately, they ain't doing it. read more

I was told To use this hike store by one of my hiking buddies that this was a great place to take your bike so I dropped off two bikes and I was told they're about a week out which is understandable I waited a week and a half with no phone calls so I called to get an update and they said we were just starting to look at my bikes i. They called me later on that day and told me the things that need to be repaired I ask them to prepare a list of the items and how much it will cost so I can decide they said OK we'll get it typed up and call you back shortly. I waited another day no call. I called back and requested when will I receive the information I requested about the cost of the repairs they said they would get back to me. so I waited five more hours they finally called back and gave me the amount and said that the parts will be in on Tuesday. I understand they have no control about deliveries or getting the parts in so I called Wednesday I was told it would be ready by Thursday never heard anything Thursday I called Friday morning they said oh the last part just got here and we have it on the rack and working on it that they just needed to put the rings the chain and the brake pads on and they would call back shortly so. I waited three hours because I know they were closing in about 40 minutes and I have a 30 minute drive to get there so I called back and they said they were still working on my bike that they were really busy after being told my bike would be first in line. They said if you want to head this way it should be ready by five or closing time and I said will you guys be willing to wait because it's gonna take me 35 minutes to get there and they said we may be here a few minutes after five but not long so basically I couldn't go pick up my bike today. This coming Tuesday will be over three weeks I drop my bike off. I totally understand orders and deliveries being out of their control but a simple phone call to provide updates goes a long way. You would think someone that's been waiting on their bike to be fixed for over 2 weeks would be first in line as I was promised that past Tuesday that when the parts arrived it would be first in line. The only update I ever got is when I called to get one. read more

I once tried to buy $2K+ bike from them and they 'talked' me into modifications on my old bike that did the trick and saved me about $1,800. They deliver what they say they will do, on time, and well done. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Five years later: when my modified bike frame (described above) finally gave up the ghost, these folks figured out what I needed in a new bike in terms of my physical limitations and got it ready for me in record time. I have continued to bring my bike in during the intervening years and will continue to in the future (despite the issues with Central). Yes, they are a bit laid back but I much prefer that to someone running up to me the moment I come into a store. I still wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I've had reliably good experiences in this shop. They don't have nearly as much "know it all, cooler-than-thou" bike shop attitude as most other shops and have a reasonably good selection (especially if you like Bianchi or steel/old school bikes). Their repairs are relatively swift, they seem to understand that many of their customers genuinely use their bikes as their primary form of transportation and attempt to do repairs as quickly as possible (rather than the common "two weeks" I've gotten from most big box shops). They also are great at patiently explaining things to newbies but equally enjoy chatting up detailed/geeky bike mechanics with armchair enthusiasts. I literally have to pass four other bike shops to get to Two Wheel drive, and I far prefer going to Two Wheel after having tried those others (with one only two blocks from my house) so that should say something. The only negative I can really say about this shop is something I initially thought was a big positive - they are almost disdainful of people "overbuying". I went in prepared to spend $3K on my first "real" road bike. I was, at the time, riding half centuries on an '86 Rockhopper and was ready to buy a "truly serious bike". They convinced me to instead buy a Bianchi Imola at half the amount I told them I was looking to spend. Now, three years later, I still love that bike. I've replaced a component here or there, but they were completely right - I didn't at that time need a $3K bike. Similarly, when my rear wheel needed to be replaced due to a minor incident involving a car hitting me I was ready to spend a hunk of change on having a nice wheel with high end components built. They again guided me (rather strongly) towards getting a Shimano 105 (midrange) component wheel that they built. It's worked out great and I've never once though "man, I wish I'd gone Ultrega". However it was slightly annoying that they wouldn't even discuss with me the possibility of making a wheel with higher end/flashier components without acting disdainful of the whole idea. Now, on the flip side, I did actually want a flashy $3k bike at the time and I have on several occasions wished I had a flashier bike. I'm still glad I bought the one I did, but now, three years later, I find myself looking again to buy a high end bike (3k-5k). They are definitely willing to sell me such a bike, but they also don't seem particularly excited about it. So in essence, if you are a bike newbie, a steel enthusiast, a blue collar cyclist, or need regular sturdy well done repairs/maintenance this is a great shop for you. If you are looking to build an ultra high end rockstar mountain bike or flashy titanium dura-ace road bike you might have a more satisfying experience elsewhere. read more

Finding a good bike shop can be one of the most frustrating experiences on the planet. Either the service sucks, or they charge you exorbitant prices for the most basic things. I've had a bike shop put the wrong size chain on my bike, and then accuse me of lying when I confronted them about it after the bike kept shifting like crap. I've had another bike shop tell me it would take a month to tune my bike because they didn't like the cut of my jib (or something). Two Wheel Drive has never disappointed me in any regard. The service is always lightning quick, and done to a high technical standard. They dish out good advice, and don't try to screw you in any way, shape or form. I have a hard time believing that anybody got bad service here, and it must be one of those occasions where the customer was being a total dick. Rather than a constant up sell, the employees are more likely to talk you out of an unnecessary purchase. Simply a great bike shop. Very friendly and helpful. I went to them for all my bicycle needs while I was in ABQ for a few months. My bike was my main form of transportation, and they always took that into account. When I moved away, they packed my bike for me and helped me out with having it shipped out of the store. IMO their prices are fair. If I move back to Albuquerque they will definitely be my LBS of choice. read more
