For as many bike shops this town has chewed up and closed down...at least in my 9 years of living here...this place has remained a local favorite. A little pricy with some things but, that's to be expected when dealing with a locally owned, smaller business...they need to price things accordingly to stay afloat and remain profitable. If they don't profit, they close up shop...that's the trade off...and I'm ok with that. That said, they're a quality shop that delivers quality service and follow up. I'd heard this was a busy era for the cycling industry, and my last two visits to this bike shop confirmed that yes, people are pedaling everywhere right now. Apparently, as soon as people started sheltering, the phone at this shop started ringing off the hook, and it hasn't stopped. Just recently they began getting moderately priced ($500-1K) bikes back in stock, and ordering specialty parts remains a challenge. Far as I can tell, it's all hands on deck; there were almost as many employees working the floor and shop at this location as there were customers, and the place was hopping. I came in for a quick tire repair and they finished the work in about three hours, impressive. I found the entire experience Covid-friendly, spaced and sanitized, and finally -- finally -- they updated their credit card system, a smooth transaction across the board. brought my bike in for some repairs (3/14/24) and was told that they were backlogged and I would have to make an appointment. I was given a "Due Date" to bring it in. This due date (3/22/24) was clearly printed on my receipt. I brought my bike in to High Desert on that date. However, an employee told me my bike was due on 3/21/24, and that I would have to make another appointment. I proceeded to show this employee the date to bring my bike in was 3/22/24, clearly printed on my receipt and that there must be some mistake. Since I already waited over a week for this appointment, I asked the employee if he could take my bike in since the mistake was clearly their fault, he would not. I spoke with a Peter Bond, who claimed to be the owner, who would not budge either. The people at High Desert, on the west side, obviously, have little or no respect nor any concern for their customers and on top of that, are exceedingly rude. I would not store to anyone. read more

Was in town for vacation & needed a small adjustment. These guys were great. The main mechanic greeted me with a smile & said hold on sir give me five minutes.& Bam like that had my DI2 shifting like new . Owner of shop wouldn't even charge me . I wound up buying some normal needs tubes , co2 etc. Not too many real bicycle shops out there but this one is at top of the list. Hi Johnny, Thank you for your reply. I gave your store another chance with my husband. Unfortunately, we received less than stellar service. The same salesman, wished I had his name. Tall, introvert. He really has a hard time dealing with customers. We were looking for a dog carrier and he said that we needed to bring our bikes in for a free service to determine what we could buy. That you might have stock in your regional storage that he could look up, we tried to get a read on what that meant. Was he going to show us what you had right then, call us back. He just kept saying without having the bikes in the store he couldn't help. Well, funny thing is that we went to another store, they showed us what they had and we spent $100.  I am only sending you this because as someone who counts on sales myself, I would be dismayed if I had an employee like this. We both agree that maybe selling isn't his forte. I am sure he could excel elsewhere but he lacks the want to follow through, which is what we experienced the first time. Didn't know anything about the part i was purchasing. Made it VERY CLEAR i needed a freewheel tool for a BMX style Redline. He sells me a freewheel tool for a multiple gear freewheel. When I got home, I looked everything up. The way I explained it to the person working there in was very clear. When I got home and looked up the different parts I was blown away that even after everything I told him he sold me the wrong part. Whats frustrating is the level of certainty he sold it to me as though I was dumb for not knowing. when it was him who was wrong very frustrating when you ride really far to deal with service that's this incompetent by the look of the place, and the interaction with their clientele, I'm quite certain that if you go in there to buy a bunch of overpriced stuff you really don't need, this is the shop. I saw them treating a few heavy spenders with open credit cards REAL GOOD. But it's clear if you go in there like me, and want HELP ...or a MOMENT to answer your questions and consider what it is your looking for..AND TAKE A MOMENT TO USE THEIR BRAINS for suggesting THE CORRECT part or some advice, because you can't see paying 50 dollars for them to turn one bolt that just needs a 10 dollar tool...this isn't the place read more

They offered to stop what they were doing and take a quick look at it right away. High Desert Bicycles - Checking thus place out first time - Bike Rentals Near Me - Albuquerque, New Mexico

This place is good for the most part. But the one turn off is their tune up. For a basic tune up, I would expect the bicycle to be returned to me better than than it was when I dropped it off. As it turns out, they won't dust off the frame or give it a "wipe down." They made a point to tell me this. For $50, one would think it would at least include a simple cleaning. Just to let everyone know I recently bought a 2020 Specialized Tarmac SL. In that I had a previous Tarmac, I have to say the 2020 lives up to all its promo and then some. It's fast on hills, great on the straightaway, smooth riding, and the Tiagra shift package is not to be underestimated. Paint and classic pin stripping add to the overall package. I just got back from taking my Jetson Electric bike to High Desert Bicycles today. Just to have the Tire and Tubes Replaced. The 1st time I took my electric bike to High Desert Bicycles last summer. I was told that they did not have the tire's and tube's in stock. And that I would have to order them. At first I thought okay, but then I asked if they could order them and I would pay them. They said they could not. So I ordered them from the Jetson Electric Bike company and got the tires and tubes in. Went back to High Desert Bicycles today (18 Apr) to have them installed, and now they informed me that they don't work on electric bikes, cause they need special tools. Not understanding what was just said, I asked the tech why all needs to be done was remove and replace tire and tubes? They are basically the same tire and tubes as a bike. All he could say was they don't work on electric bikes. If I could give these guys zero stars I would. The owner was a complete jackass to me when I brought my bicycle in for repairs. At one point I tried to walk away from him and wait for his tech to finish working on my bike. He followed me and began raising his voice. When I asked him to go away and leave me alone he completely lost his wits and started yelling at me at the top of his lungs. I took my bike off the repair stand and left. I've dealt with bike shops all over the USA while on cross-country tours. By far and away the owner and crew at High Desert is the worst I've ever dealt with in over 30 years of touring. I have been a loyal customer of HDB (High Desert Bicycles) for about 9 years now. First as a returning cyclist getting back into it after about 20 years of not racing and then in the last 3 years as I got back into triathlon racing. First, the shop is always busy and thankfully staffs the shop so you don't have to wait long for service. Second, I have never had an experience in the shop with the staff or ever present owners that has left me feeling like I was not welcome. The shop is stocked with some of the latest and greatest and if they don't have what I am looking for, they have gone above and beyond to make sure that I can get what I want. Finally, the reason I choose to use and refer people to the shop are the staff that work there. The owners, John, Johnny and Vince are always available and the "go to" staff that I have trusted with all of my bikes, (Jason, Rob and Doug) have always helped me keep my equipment in tip top shape.
