My favorite place for Spanish tapas. The Patatas bravas are out of this world. And my new favorite tapa is the San Fermin. Highly recommend this place. Their outside staff at their Passeig de Gràcia location could be a little friendlier, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and argue it may just have been a busy hour. They also have free wifi, but you have to ask for an individual ticket and it only works inside. read more

I'm not even going to list what I ordered because there is no point. You just need to try this place. I can't remember anyway.  This place is great. You get a paper menu with pictures of all of their tapas (bring a pen to circle what you want!). I speak Castellano but was really trying to read my menu that was in Catalan. I gave up and they brought out a menu of all of their food items in a variety of different languages. FYI on that... It is SO easy to get carried away while you order. But seriously, have fun and order whatever looks/sounds good to you. Because I can tell you, it will be. The prices are fairly reasonable (but remember, this is still a touristy place though it feels very authentic in terms of the food/atmosphere). My group of 4 ordered between 8-10 tapas each, plus 2-3 dessert tapas each and we walked out spending approx 100 Euros. Not bad at all. We were sufficiently full. Husband and I were walking around after checking in to Hotel Claris and this place is only a block away. It is New Years Day so a lot of restaurants are closed. This one happened to be open so we walked in and it was PACKED! We were seated almost immediately after looking around for a seat. The menu was very colorful and had pictures. All you had to do was point to which number you wanted and they would bring out small tapas for you. They also have menus in French, English and other languages but you do have to ask. I didn't need to ask as the concept was simple but the table next to us were French and struggling. Each tapas select ranged from 1,75-1,95 euros. The food was decent, the left side of the menu was all hot food and the right side were cold dishes. We had 2 coffees with milk 2 bottles of water and about 12 tapas. Our bill was 30euros. Txapela is perfectly average...like going to a Ruby Tuesday in the states. Decent food and no flair, which is fine by me. I tried to take my son to a real tapas place a bit further down the street...I could tell he wasn't wild about the idea. So, I felt like I was flaking out by going to txapela. However, the German pilsner was cold, I could check my lame version of the Spanish language at the door, and could point to exactly what we wanted on the menu...cool. For kids, they have mini hot dogs, fried chicken, and calamari tapas, making it easy on the parents a bit. Txapela is a comfortable way to ease into the tapas scene in Barcelona, just be sure to move on. read more

The best tapas I ate in Spain. La Latina part of Madrid was quite overrated and I told myself that I dislike tapas until I came here. Tapas here are affordable and high quality. I ordered 18 tapas (11 I took home) and 1 cup of wine for ~37 euros. That's cheap...but very delicious! Madrid your food sucks but Barcelona I love you for Gaudi and Tapas! To top that the service was friendly and attentive...the best I've received from anyone including the hotel staff! read more

A lesson learned long ago....eat where the locals do. This is how we stumbled upon Txapela. For our group we had a guide that basically gave us the afternoon off after negotiating Las Ramblas. At our dismissal we invited him to dine with us for lunch. Talk feat for an out of towner. He suggested Txapela, so off we go. Old wood decor, and tapas that basically lined the counter. Now comes the part I love, what to pick. Okay I gotta have what Uli is having. A couple of Jamon on excellent bread....delicious. Next a charizio sausage once again on great bread...but this is warm and super tasty. But wait we have to wash this down. Now comes a drink I'm not familiar with but dying to find here in the states. A cider that has to be poured at a certain distance to airate the drink. Wonderful and it's only 2% alcohol! Wow. Last on the tapas parade was a goose pate that I have never had and this I would go back for! Also in our conversations Uli told us this was a Basque Tapas tavern and why the tapas were so much better and fresher than most places. Plus many of the locals enjoy a quick bite here. Amazing food. It is like Spanish sushi. It was our favorite restaurant in Barcelona, when we spent a week there in October. The tiny toast with crab salad was like nothing I have ever tried before, I wish I could try everything in that menu with photos (place mat). My mouth still waters when I think about that restaurant. And I have tried plenty of great food in the the San Francisco Bay Area. By the way, service was as good as it gets in Spain :). We did not expect anything close to the American service anyways. read more

HIt this place twice during a short stay. There was really a good variety of tapas and I knew that the popularity of the place would assure fresh food. Perhaps coming during the height of tourist season helped. It seems I was right. Tapas are often made ahead, otherwise it would be a ridiculous amount of work trying to keep up with demand during busy times, so if that bothers you, then pick a different sort of place. The bread was not stale. It was like melba toast. If you want overstuffed sandwiches, this is not the place. If you want what you're used to, then don't travel or just hit the local branches MacD. KFC, BK or Subway. I thought the servers coped with the volume of business pretty well and were open to translating as best they could. There is a printed menu with translations, as well. I would have liked more variety of beers available, but Bittberg was ok. In terms of variety, price and quality, Txapela was fine. read more

Very good service. From the host to the servers... very friendly and speak English fluently. The tapas were REALLY good! Try number 14 which is a pork belly with some type of jelly that was so good! Its right in front of a large Plaza with a giant water fountain. Sangria was a bit strong but otherwise a smart choice! read more

Came here with my wife on a Saturday night and was sat with another table of 4 people sitting right next to us. They were served drinks and food before we were even greeted or spoken to by the server. I went to speak with the hostess who greeted and sat us and she said there was only one server for the whole section we were in on a Saturday night in the summer. That's called poor management. My question to the hostess was, how did a table of 4 get served drinks and food before a party of 2 that was sat at the exact same time? I use to be a server and that is unacceptable. I travel to Spain frequently for business and I will not spend money here ever. The menu is basically your table mat, and it shows colourful pictures of pintxos, which have become one of my favourite things about Spain! They are essentially little snacks where the bottom is usually a piece of thinly cut baguette, and on top can be anything from cheese to meat to fish. It really depends on how creative the restaurant gets! Other than that, they also offer some typical Spanish tapas, a few selection of desserts, and drinks. The menu is not in English, but since the pictures are so pretty, I just chose based on the appearance. Not a lot of frustration with ordering since you can just point or say the number. I got the Pincho Urruti, which is a classic cannelloni with wild mushroom sauce. It's pretty small, but the mushroom sauce was so good. Everything just melts in your mouth. On the right on the plate is the Pincho Mallorca, which is warm brie with spicy pork sausage. This was okay, but I found the pork sausage to have a very strong pork flavour which I wasn't very used to. Lastly, I got the Pincho Arantxa, which is pictured on the left of the plate. This included prawns, bacon and grilled mushroom, which was my favourite pincho. I just enjoy grilled seafood and grilled mushrooms, and everything was lightly salted, so you could taste the freshness. The pintxos range from 1.45 to 2.45 euros, so some can be quite affordable. However, you need at least 3-4 of them to be sort of full. As a snack, that is perfect, but for a meal, you may need 5. Don't order too many at first, as they can really fill you up. You need to remember that each pintxo has a piece of bread under, which for some reason will fill you up! All in all, not a bad pintxo joint, but it is definitely not my favourite. It's a good place to start if you want to try a variety of pintxos at a decent price though. read more

food sooo good! I just kept ordering. We found this place by just roaming around the streets of Barcelona. There was a never ending cycle of people going in and out. It was cray-cray! There's this waiter who served us... He should be given an award, even though I can't remember his name (he was wearing all black though). He catered to all our needs since my boyfriend is allergic to fish and seafood in general. We went here to have a quick snack. It was 3 pm and the place was still busy. They did not give us English menu so it's hard to pick tapas among all the choices. We tried the Iberia pork, squid, crab, etc. Nothing special. Iberia pork was a bit salty so I wouldn't recommend it. But the prices are quite low. You can try a variety of tapas at one time. As for the service, I'd say there should be more waiters for so many customers. read more

D*mn. Got this one mixed up with Teleferic. Was looking for a place near the Passeig de Gracia station and we ended up here (b/c they had vegetarian options and I thought it was a different place that had really good reviews... So sad to have wasted one of my Barcelona-dining experiences here). First, let me say I am fairly okay with the whole shared sink space for the bathrooms - Let me warn you, this place's restrooms are creepily uncomfortable. You go downstairs and see signs for men, women, and disabled restrooms - Then you open that door and realize all of the stalls are in one small room together. Once you get over that shock, you look at the pictures on the doors trying to figure out which is which, b/c it makes total sense to mark the men's stalks with a pic of a dude wearing a wig-WTF??!. But then you realize, it doesn't matter - It's disgustingly obvious that men were using the women's stalks and vice versa. Gross. And so when you're standing in this god-awful room trying to wash your hands and some dude stumbles out of a stall, and then decides to zip up his fly, your love for Barcelona will start to falter. So that was strike one. Strike 2 was when I got back upstairs and while pulling out my chair and looking down, I see a GINORMOUS cockroach scuttling across the floor. I'm not exaggerating when I say this bugger was the length of my closed fist. So think about that when you know their eats have been sitting out in a display. So even then, we ended up eating their. I know, I think about it now, and it sounds completely crazy, but I thought this was a different place that had really good Yelp reviews. Plus, I had just gotten off a 2 hour train ride and I was starving. The food was eh-to-okay - They did have several vegetarian options, so I tried like 5 different things. They were all edible. Hubby had 2 meat-dishes. He ate them. That's about all I can say on the food. Our server is what you would expect if you were going to be waited on by someone who works at Abercrombie and Fitch. Passable. It was our first food stop in Barcelona after an exhausting international plane flight. We checked it out around midday and sat at the bar. A very nice girl took care of us and helped us choose a few Tapas and a good glass of wine. Nothing was sensational but everything was solid: croquettes, Jamon on tomato bread, a potato and cod mousse thing, fig and cheese, etc. All in all not to bad in a pinch (or Pinchos). read more

I love this place!!! We have stopped in 3 or 4 times for little bites of deliciousness!!! We like to sit at the bar and just point at what looks good! They are tiny, 2 bite tapas that are so good! Our favs are the cod/aioli, tortilla w shrimp & mushroom, & cannelloni, plus rice pudding for dessert! The female bartenders are friendly and will help you select the most tasty pics of the night. I wouldn't even consider this tapas.. Is it? You order one menu item and it is about 3 bites. I believe they are called pinxtos (pronounced pinchos). It's difficult to share (as I thought tapas was about!), to me it's more like.. Appetizers a la carte. 95% of the items are on a baguette slice and have an average price of around 2€. They have about 30 hot and 39 cold choices. My husband and I had about 5-6 each, shared a pitcher of sangría (10,30ish €) and had 1 dessert item (2,25€) each. The desserts weren't as large as the meal items and are above average... I would say eat dessert elsewhere. The total was around 36€. Wasn't too bad considering we were very happy with the quality, taste, and service there... Our bellies and brains were happy! I wanted to take photos but everything looked so delicious, we ate and it was too late!! Worth the money. read more

Would give zero star if I could for the service. Giving it one star for the price. Waited for 40 mins to place an order, 30 mins to pay for the bill. It's not like the restaurant is that busy. It's the disparity between how the manager treated locals and tourists irritates me. We were completely ignored and given the "i will get back to you" three times. We actually had a great experience. Was there the day before the terror attack yikes but really really nice food and the staffs were ok too. I was most impressed w/the way that they have money strapped on their belts or big apron that they don't even a registers?? Wow!!! Talk about multi-tasking. Our group of 4 stopped by here for a quick lunch. We got seated quickly, but they seem understaffed. We had to flag down our waiter twice to put in our orders for drinks. Ordering was easy, since they have an English menu and a placemat with pictures of their tapas. When our first wave of tapas came, our waiter forgot to provide plates and silverware until we reminded him to do so. The tapas were standard fare and the sangria was strong. This place was recommended by my wife co-worker in Barcelona. I expected a local gem. But found out later that this is a chain. Food was good as our first meal in Barcelona. But found so many other places better. See my other reviews. Every tapas were served over bread. It was very friendly for Americans. Food quality was subpar considering what's in the area- this place is just not very good. Wait staff was neglectful and not very friendly, also odd for the area. To top it off, the manager was directly rude to me while I waited for my husband to use the bathroom after we finished eating. One star is for the waiter/staff who welcomed us in the night before we ate here. We had just had dinner at another establishment & on our way home, we walked passed this place. The staff member said hello & invited us in. We stopped & chatted a moment. Since he was very friendly & seemed genuine, we took the take away menu he gave us & decided to return then next day to try their tapas. Boy, what a huge mistake!!! The night we went in, our "friend" who had invited us in the night before, was no where in sight. We sat at the tapas bar & after being looked at by about 4 staff members, were never greeted or asked what we wanted to order. We literally sat looking around for someone to help us for at least 20 min. We were tired from walking all day & were not looking forward to have to leave to find another place to eat. We finally spoke up, not once but 3 times- both my husband and I said patiently & politely, in Spanish "Hi! Can we order from you??" The first couple times, the servers (women) just stopped, looked at us & then walked away as if we had not even spoken. The third time we asked the server behind the bar (woman) she snapped at us saying "Don't you see I'm busy!! Someone will help you when we're ready to come to you!!" She rolled her eyes & walked off over to another server & talked about us, loudly followed by both of them looking over to us & laughing!! This was the most RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL & UNPROFESSIONAL service we experienced in all of Spain. On this occasion, when the third staff member snapped at us, thankfully the manager happened to be walking by us. She noticed what had happened & quickly addressed the incident while apologizing multiple times & asking us to give her the chance to make it better. She invited us to a table upstairs & proceeded to take our orders. From then on it went down hill again. Our orders came about 20 minutes apart for the first 3 of our party. The 4th person- a child had to wait 45 minutes for her order!! The craziest part is that it was a quesadilla & fries kids meal. We asked the waiters multiple times about it thinking maybe they forgot but they just kept saying "We're making it." When the Kid's meal finally came we were all ready to leave. They didn't even have the decency to remove the kid's meal charges from the bill even after we told them the child had eaten from every one else's tapas since she was so hungry & waited 45 minutes for her food. read more

Pinchos (or pintxos) are a sort of food served here in Spain, particularly in the northern region know as Euskadi (Basque Country). It consists of a bread base on top of which sits some kind of meat, fish, omelet or vegetable. There's a wide choice of those, some of them more refined than other but nonetheless always nice. The price commonly ranges between 1.5€ and 3€ (sometimes it includes a small serve of beer or wine as well, but usually doesn't). Although pintxos were not born in Barcelona, we've adopted the tradition and can be found everywhere in the city. The "Txapela" is a sort of traditional hat used in the Euskadi and also gives the name to this restaurant chain which food used to be much better that it is now. While some of my previous experiences there had been greatly pleasant, it wasn't so the last two times I've been. Let me expose some details. I know accurately how Cod omelet looks and tastes, and I cannot accept beeing refuted by the attendant when I complain about having been served zucchini omelet instead. Additionally, here in Spain, we have some clearly defined beer sizes (from smaller to larger: caña, copa, jarra and pinta). I expect that when asking for a caña (the smaller) to be served as requested but instead I severed a jarra, just because it what tourists demand the most. Unacceptable. read more

Don't bother. Service was lack luster and TWICE we were given tiny glasses for our sangria crusted with debris and lip prints - NO THANK YOU! We ate our food, choked down our sangria and went elsewhere. If we had not ordered food we would have left immediately. We should have known as most outdoor seats were empty. read more
