Tyranena Painted Ladies Pumpkin Spice Ale: Although I've become less of a beer guy since my college days, I like to try at least one new pumpkin beer each fall. Tyranena was founded in Lake Mills, WI by Rob Larson in 1999. Although that's within my lifetime, it was well before my beer drinking days. Painted Ladies Pumpkin Spice Ale (PLPSA) comes in at an above average 7.25% ABV with an IBU of 22. The bottle depicts multiple pumpkins painted with makeup to resemble women. The term "Painted Ladies" has a few different meanings. It was chosen for Lake Mill's "The Painted Ladies Fling" because the word is often used for Victorian and Edwardian buildings that are painted in ways that help to enhance their architectural details. The fling helps to highlight business and building owners who have embellished and enhanced their buildings throughout the year. Alternatively, it can be used as a synonym for prostitute, and that's why it was chosen for this ale as some of the more adventurous women in Lake Mills dress as painted ladies during the Fling event. PLPSA is an amber ale that pours an opaque copper color with surprisingly little head. There are notes of caramel and toffee, along with pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and clove). I found this to be an easy beer to drink as the none of the flavors were overly pronounced (although this could also be a criticism for some). Bartender's were friendly and the bar had some games to play and an outside seating area as well. It was quite dark, but an easygoing vibe. There were SOO many options, so we tried a flight. The sour beer (Murdsaki) in particular was my favorite! It was refreshingly tart and fruity. read more

1st time visiting this brewery. What an amazing place! Very clean was one of the first things I noticed. I had a wonderful conversation with the bartender about the place in-between her being extremely busy... I wanted to personally thank her for showing up to work this day... it was a Tuesday evening and the place was Rocking. It was nice to see... Entire patio was filled with people smiling having a great time, a food truck was serving up some amazing jerk chicken and carribean spiced shrimp tacos(5 out of 5 stars), music playing, and beers were flowing in and out of the place. Several people were showing up just to pick up to-go beers. I was truly impressed as I watched this amazing bartender put her head down and worked extremely hard as she was all by herself. The entire time keeping a great attitude towards all her patrons. I order several different flights so I got an opportunity to try each beer they had on tap. All of them were tasty. Great options to choose from and prices were fair. You have the ability to buy all the beers to-go or fill your growlers. I believe most their beers are sold in 4 packs. This is a nice little brewery. I was up there over the weekend to get tickets for The Great Taste of the Midwest. The brewery ran the entire event in a nice and orderly fashion. as far as I could tell, nothing went wrong for the participants. As for the brewery itself. The tasting room is tiny. A bar, and a half dozen small tables. Which is fine if it isn't busy, but if they are, then it can get cramped. Fortunately for us, the weather was nice for the most part and we were able to sit outside on the patio where there is more room. There is no food served here other than pretzels with mustard. They do have a propane grill on the patio that you can bring your own meat to cook on, so that's nice. Their beer is pretty good. Nothing that really impressed me to the point that I would travel the hour or so distance just to get, but if I was in the neighborhood, I'd definitely stop in for one. I'm not a hop head, but their Scurvy and the Rocky's Revenge were my favorites. Service was good while I was there, both Saturday night and Sunday morning. I never had to wait long for a beer and they even let me get behind the bar to snap a picture of one of their tapper handles. read more

Saw Mannish Boys. This is one of the safest places I've found to meet outside during the current health crisis. Staff wear masks. They space tables appropriately. They patrol the area to ensure compliance. They have signs, and people follow the rules. The music was wonderful. The bartender mixed sours with other beer, some of the best I've ever had. Reasonable prices, at $5 to $6 a beer. Appreciate the health, safety and attention to COVID rules, and that they are very dog friendly. read more

This is one of our favorite local places. Not only did this brewery feature very good craft beer (use to be micro-brewed), it has music on the weekends. If the weather is cooperative during the summer months the bands will be in the new expanded beer garden. They invite local food vendors out to sell food or you can bring your own. Kids and dogs are welcomed on the lawn as long as both are friendly. I visit craft breweries as a hobby (at least I tell myself that). I visited Tyranena Brewing Company today in the midst of a crawl visiting several neighboring breweries. Tyranena's taproom very much appeared like a more traditional bar but probably much much cleaner. They designated a specific spot at the bar for orders and I got a flight of 4 for $12.50. I picked two heavier stouts, a sour and a cream ale. I tried seasonal offerings or ones I couldn't just pick up in bottles at the local grocery store. Tyranena has a strong presence in the WI market and several of their brews are staples in the area. Despite looking like a bar, it had a nice outside porch area. There were children present and one dog who enjoyed being the center of attention laying on her back. The Wi-Fi was accessible without a password and the signal was strong. I appreciated the service from the staff who also provided me with brewery bottle labels in lieu of having logo stickers. Nice place with what appeared to be full of local loyal patrons. read more

Update: I went on their tour this weekend. It was very informative and was lead by their head brewer. He passed around the grains and hops for us to smell. We could try a Cascade hop too, which I did. This is the cleanest brewery I have ever been to! It was well-organized and the fermenters were named after important women in the owner's life. Tours are on Saturdays at 3:30 pm. I can't believe I hadn't been on their tour! I lived in Lake Mills for 18 years. read more

On today's adventure the Husband was dead set on a new brewery being one of our stops. Figuring that Tyranena (we disagreed on the pronunciation and found out it's actually TIE-RUH-KNEE-NAH) was in the area that's where we set off to. I was blown away by the beauty of the landscape on our drive. I mean lush and verdant rolling hills everywhere you looked! However, I was beginning to lose faith in Hubby's navigational skills since the drive went on and on. Worried about not leaving a trail of bread crumbs we finally made it! The parking lot was full. They had live Irish music and the outdoors were taken over by families and the young and the old alike. It really was a beautiful August evening to be out. No seating outside meant plenty inside and that's where we parked ourselves. Their beers were OK and besides the barrel aged beer there's was nothing too memorable. It was overall a really nice time and we look forward to going back. The drive and the place itself are worth it. read more

I'm not much of a beer drinker, but that being said, I had the best microbrewery beer I've ever had here. We were meeting some friends who were coming in off the bike trail, and they had planned to eat dinner there. The brewery does not serve food, but you can order delivery. Like another reviewer mentioned, the place is dog friendly. I had the Three Beaches Honey Blonde, which I really enjoyed. I later tried the cherry lambic variety. It was good, but having consumed a fair share of Lindeman's Framboise in my days, I expected it to be a litter sweeter than what it was. If I was passing though, I would plan another stop to this brewery. read more

The lovely music, the variety of food cart vendor choices, and the wonderful outdoor seating space is impeccable. I have yet to try their brew tours, but their beverage options is delicious. Their staff is very knowledgable in the types of beers they offer. Their location isn't difficult to find and parking seems to never be a problem from what I've heard and experienced. I tip my hat off to them for offering TRIVIA on Tuesday, I've gone a couple of times and it has been pretty fun. Inside and out - this place is clean and well managed, they take great pride in the appearance of their business and you can totally see the passion in the work put into to keep this company going. In warmer weather, they have outdoor seating (with heaters). Indoors is a bit small, and they tend to get pretty busy, but it's a great place to visit. They sometimes have live bands/music. Tyranena represents the kind of tasting room that I enjoy drinking at. The room consists of a nice long bar and chairs with some other high top tables. My first impression upon walking in was that it's a nice cozy place to have some draft beer. I tried the Three Beaches Honey Blonde and loved its excellent, lightly sweet aftertaste. I also partook in the Headless Man Amber Alt and list it as one of the best Ambers I have had. Another huge plus about this place is that I was befriended not only by the locals drinking there, but by the owner's dog! Patrons overheard I was from Phoenix and they wanted to know what Phoenix is like, so we talked and laughed. I enjoyed talking to everyone, including Jen behind the bar. I was offered some complimentary Gardetto's snack mix, which is unheard of at any bar today. Who doesn't like free and tasty snack mix with their beer? I'd like to come back to vacation in Milwaukee and surely hope to make my way over to Lake Mills for a little Tyranena beer. If you're within 30 miles of this place, make it a point to pass up any Applebees and reward yourself with some excellent local Wisconsin beer. *Tip 1: They have a half marathon in November. I hear they offer beer after the race concludes! **Tip 2: There's an excellent running/biking trail nearby called the Drumlin State Trail. Get a nice run in and then head over to Tyranena to quench that thirst you've built up! read more

We headed out on a three day road trip of the state that included seven micro-breweries and called it our #beercation. We rushed out of Milwaukee straight from my job on Saturday to make it to Tyranena before 2 pm, as that's when their website said their tour started. We arrived and got a quick sampler set, which was tasty and the bartender's were informative and friendly. 2 pm sneaks up and nothing is mentioned about the tour, so I ask and both bartenders are basically clueless. One thinks the tour might be at 2:30, one thinks it's at 3:30. Neither of those times are listed online. Ok, we have tasty beers, it's the beginning of beercation, we settle in to wait for 2:30. It comes and goes and nothing else is said. Other people had come in to the tasting room before 2 pm, also awaiting that tour. We're all kind of left waiting and wondering. Eventually it's hypothesized that no one informed the tour guide that the company had changed the tour schedule and there was supposed to be a 2 pm tour. No one really seemed concerned about this. One bartender attempted to send a text, but not to the tour gudie, to someone to ask if the tour guide had been informed. Sigh. Not an auspicious beginning to our little vacation. On the plus side, the tasting room offers free pretzels and mustard. They had three small batch specialty beers on tap. Additional negatives - they'll only fill their own growlers. They won't fill growlers or minis of any specialty. After sitting for about an hour and having received no clear information, we left and headed for more beer. The tasting room seems nice. The staff was friendly if sort of laissez-faire. They had a stein club and were throwing a Halloween party. If I lived in the area, I could see being a regular. But they had one shot to give me a good impression and they just didn't. In the span of two more days, I saw what a brewery can do and these guys came up short in the comparison. It's unfortunate, but with all the great local microbreweries, after this experience I can't see that I'll go back here instead of one of the many other places where I received better service, attention to detail and beer. read more

I used to live in Cambridge near Tyranena. I miss it so. For your first time, have a sampler. The beer here is incredibly good, but if you're looking for a bar scene, this is not it. It is a nice place to play board games, grill out, pet the dogs that are always wandering around, and spend a lazy summer Sunday on the patio. I really like the Three Beaches Honey Blonde, Bitter Woman, and Rocky's Revenge. There is no food but free pretzels there, but they have printed up the numbers of local delivery and take-out places printed up for you if you would like some food while you're there. It is fairly small, so big groups probably aren't a good idea. Comfortable with tasty beer and totally worth the drive. read more

The beers are great, and they have a super cheap sampler with nine or ten tastings for ten bucks. And their tasting pours are like five ounces. So riding the bike is a good idea because we usually leave wasted and full of pretzels. They have board games and give tours on Saturday. Also live music. After enjoying Tyranena beers in the bottle for a couple of years, I was really looking forward to visiting the source. I arrived on a Friday around 5PM. Because they are a brewery first and the "tasting room" second, it is in a large stand-alone industrial building. There is plenty of parking in their private lot. The tasting room was pretty small. There is a bar with about 12 stools. I didn't find the stools to be super comfy, but they weren't too bad. There was a chair rail, but no purse hooks for the ladies. The other side of the room was filled with about 6 high tables. So I settled at the bar and ordered the sampler. They were out of one of the beers and we substituted with their root beer instead. The beer was fantastic. I like the Fargo Brothers hefe, the Scruvy IPA, Bitter Woman IPA, and the Rocky's Revenge. The "kinda lambic" sour was not as good as I had hoped for. I do like sour beers, but this one just didn't have the pucker I was expecting. And of course, their easy drinking Three Beaches Honey Blonde was very popular with other patrons, but I found it boring. There were some live music on the patio between 6PM and 9PM. They opened the door and windows so I could hear it fine without leaving my spot at the bar. It was some kind of folk/country music mostly. I didn't love it, but it was a nice touch for an otherwise pretty sterile environment. After my sampler, I ordered pints of a few of my favorites. The Scurvy is really good on tap! The bartender was not particularly engaging. Friendly, but he did not seem genuinely interested in interacting with self proclaimed beer tourists. That's OK though, he kept my beer and water filled, so I was happy. Note: When I ordered water "no straw" as is my habit, he replied that they don't even have straws. I was so happy to hear this. They also apparently don't have ice as the water was served without that as well. Having had my recommended daily allowance of pretzels and mustard I decided to get more food. The bartender provided me with the book of delivery places. My wife ordered a pizza from Timber Creek Pizza. After some initial confusion caused by the girl that answered the phone (she wasn't sure that they delivered to Tyranena), we eventually got a pizza delivered right to the tasting room. The poor guy didn't even know the name of who he was delivering for, but I saw him and completed the transaction. There are dogs. Why anyone feels compelled to bring dogs to a bar I am not sure, but the ones in attendance were well behaved and there was no barking. This is a little quirky thing only made possible by the fact that they don't serve food I guess. Once the sun went down, the decision to open the door and windows for the music turned into a poor one. The mosquitoes infiltrated the place and it got pretty annoying. But not as annoying as the choice of loud country music that filled the place as well. As the sun went down and the mosquitoes and young drinkers started taking over the Tyranena tasting room, I was ready to end my day. Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Tyranena. My 4 star rating is primarily based on the beer. The bar space is small and sterile. It is fine for enjoying a few beers, but it is not really trying to be a pub. The lack of food makes it hard for me to spend the day. I would definitely come back to Tyranena if I was in the area, but I don't know if the good beer is enough to draw me out to the middle of Wisconsin. read more

My wife and I love it there. We dropped in while riding our bikes one summer and sat in the outdoor beer garden to sip micro brews and listen to a live band. Now we're mug club members. Great atmosphere and great beer. Nothing week bodied about their selections. Best Scotch Ale in WI! Great beer menu and always rotating in new specialty seasonals. Love this place! They have a great outdoor space and they're dog-friendly. Y'all know how much I love this! My pup hasn't given his paw of approval yet, but I'm sure he will. I've stopped in the past few summers while home visiting my parents. It's a great hidden gem. The beers are solid, especially if you're a fan of IPAs. I'm not, but I've never had a problem finding something I like. If I lived in the area, I'd probably stop in for one of their live band nights. I have to tell you this is a must stop if you like micro brews! We stopped in last night with friends from Colorado. The kids loved the root beer, we sampled many of the flavored choices via a flight and had a great time with the Beertender that was working. She was well versed in the selections, personable, and took great care of us! Even their dog played a part in making us welcome!!! The Beer Garden is beautiful. Bummed we could not take the tour for our guests. But, it was still a memorable experience that should be had by all who enjoy craft beers! Highly recommended!! read more

The husband and I came here on the 4th for a tasting. "Let's try them all," we thought. Well, when we said that, the bartender came back with 9 tasting glasses for each of us. Wow, I guess we were going to be there for a while. The beer was all pretty good. I liked their classic, Rocky's Revenge, and really enjoyed their porter and stout. The tasting room was a pretty chill place. There's an outdoor area, but we stayed inside. We saw a stack of board games on the windowsill behind our table and grabbed a game to play. Checkers entertained us for a couple hours. We slowly made it through out beers during that time, but we were never checked on by a waitress or bartender, even though the tasting room wasn't that busy. We drove from Lake Geneva to visit, and I think the hour drive was worth it, but I don't think it's a trip I'd make every time I'm in Lake Geneva. read more

Tyranena Brewing is well worth the drive to Lake Mills. We went there recently on a Friday night to listen to live music and have a picnic. They have a good set up in the back with plenty of tables and chairs and lots of grassy area for you to place your own chairs or lay a blanket down. There is a different food cart each Friday or you can bring your own snacks and dinner. The beer was great (love a good bourbon barrel beer) and there was just the right amount of people. We never had to wait in long lines and staff were roaming around to pick up empty glasses. Planning our next trip! read more

Tyranena Brewery and Tasting Room... It had been a while since my last review. The time has come to get my act together and start typing. What better place to start than Tyranena Brewery and Tasting Room. To say that I am a fan is putting it mildly, but being born and raised in Lake Mills I better support my hometown Brewery. Me and the Gal made the 4.5 hour trip on the spur of the moment to par take of their delicious nectar of the Gods. Earlier in the day we took a 2.5 hour journey from the Twin Cities to Northern Wisconsin for possible retirement cabin. We were not getting a good vibe from the area, and The Gal says to me, "you know where we get a good vibe and feel welcome every time we go?" My answer, "Lake Mills and Tyranena Brewery!" We look at each other and say, "Want to go?" "YES! Why not?" So, 4.5 hours later we are pulling into the parking lot. The place is full. Milk House Radio, a folk rock band is playing live in the corner of the tasting room. 2 customers are getting ready to leave and offer us their seats. We are quickly included in a conversation with the 2 bartenders and few of the other patrons. The beer is some of the best I have ever had. We are big fans of their Blackhawk Porter, and Rocky's Revenge Bourbon Barrel Brown Ale. But if you get the chance try their Brewers Gone Wild Brews. We had such a good time that night we had to go back the next day. We ended up buying a 12 pack of Porter, a Sweat shirt for the Gal, and the Coolest Shop Shirt for me. Each time we have stopped by, they seem to have something going on, whether it's a dog wash, a beer run, or a hip Irish band playing. They also always have something new on tap to try!!! We love the vibe we get at Tyranena so we continued our search of a retirement cabins in the Lake Mills aera instead of northern Wisconsin. Okay I do have family and friends still in Lake Mills so it's not just the beer that had us looking for a place to call home.
