food though the combo meals advertised in chalk outside the restaurant were interesting to me, it was the black & blue burger combo, also a b&b for you hostelers out there, that interested me most. and while the onion rings i'd got on the side were excellent and very conducive for sharing, the burger in no way paled by association, as every aspect was on point, starting with the melty cheese that was distinct from the crumbles you might have tried previously on a salad, meanwhile maintaining the textural indication of portional bounty similarly present in the mounding of blue cheese atop dishes without cooking it. further, the complementary mushroom, and additionally flavorful peppers & onions from the grill stayed together with the burger and cheese within a fairly normal size bun, a credit to the complete integrity of the ingredients in maintaining layers of flavor in tandem with the often diverging culinary measure of structural unity. and lastly, i'll share what i'd learned from asking momma if the mushroom is commonly the reason for the "black" portion of the black & blue burger, to which she responded with her belief that it comes more from the blackening seasoning on the burger patty, with mushroom being not irregular, but also not staple for the black & blue burger. so, thanks to the generous restaurant menu writers for the bonus mushroom; the flavor was not foremost to me, but i'd assert the flavor of the pepp & onion would not have shined nearly as well without it. service excellent. the front counter worker was very knowledgeable of the menu, as clear in the listing of toppings to ask if all that comes with the burger as it appears in the menu was good with me. then, after mom received her drink before we left the counter, another worker delivered the food with impressionable speed, though not in a rush, as evident in asking if i'd want ketchup with the meal. ambiance [[HIGHLIGHT]]contemporary vintage is a term that comes to mind for me, influenced in at least detectable part by the kind of store north of the restaurant, though the soda and other beverage memorabilia around the interior and to a lesser extent the exterior, definitely contribute too[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Wanted a good burger but close to our house today for lunch, so we found that Ty's Hamburgers is right down the road and we'd never been in. I got the black and blue burger with onion rings and hubs got a standard bacon cheeseburger and Q's. I thought (mistakenly) that I had seen a photo of the onion rings here before and they were more shoestring. My mistake, I was obviously remembering a photo from somewhere else. The burgers were good and so were the sides, though I much preferred his fries to my onion rings. Two problems that were kind of meal killers: they don't appear to have AC. They have fans everywhere, standing and ceiling and it was still hot as hades in there - I couldn't wait to get back in the car with AC. Second, they only offer one diet soft drink, Diet Coke, and it ran out when filling our cups. Also, the little Diet Coke we got was flat. No refills on that $2.25 soft drink. It was a little dive-ish, and I can handle that, but the heat and lack of carbonated diet drinks was a bit of a bummer. This was also a $30 lunch all in, so if price is a concern, preview the menu. I've been out of Tulsa for the last ten years. I don't remember the last time I tried Ty's but it was at least 12 years ago, maybe 15 years ago. That long ago visit was bad. I wondered about how recent my last doctor visit was. I was shaken enough to worry if I was about to bring sickness back home. Being back in Green Country I heard about 3 years ago the ownership had changed and when I had the chance I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon to see what was different. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First? Clean. The space was clean and maintained.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I obviously didn't get behind the counter but I believe the same attention to sanitary conditions was there as well. I ordered a Hickory Burger without lettuce or tomato. I feel like veggies can distract from the quality of a burger. So, my first time I edit them to focus on the burger. Magnificent! This is a smash burger with a generous about of hickory sauce. The pickle and onion was not increased by the holding of the other two toppings. Not too much, not too little. The patty was larger than the bun. Not to an unyielding degree but enough that you realize you have a giving portion. I ordered curly fries to round out the order. The portion is more than generous. So generous the woman helping me warned we wouldn't be able to get the lid of the to-go container shut. She let me decide how to season the fries (Cajun, salt, and/or pepper) before securing my order unshut container in a bag for transport. This is my new favorite. The building has been around awhile. Possibly much longer than the 40 plus years since Ty's first slapped a beef patty on the grill in Tulsa. A sign painted on the south side of the building proclaims "over 3 dozen sold." It doesn't qualify that achievement in reference to the time it took to do it. Judging from the delicious taste of the burger and fries, I believe that volume in sales is easily exceeded daily! Inside the seating is comprised of a hodgepodge of comfortable orphaned chairs and tables. Order at the counter, the food is delivered to your table. In the kitchen, Ty's unwinds the big potatoes. Then the pale tangles of potato string are rushed to the fryer. In minutes they become golden brown coils, crispy potato Slinkies. You get a big pile and they are good, addictive. The burger matched. For me a third pound patty with cheese, appropriately dressed with L,T,P,O&M hold the mayo. Ty's is a must try old-fashioned burger dive. Recommended. read more

You had me at tots with my burger, then you go and put some flat out amazing chili on it and new year's resolution has been crushed instantly. This is one of those cool place where you can have a burger with a friend. The sweet tea isn't messing around it's proper southern sweet tea, I usually just mix it with a little unsweetened. They do every part of the burger properly it's got a nice char and if you get a bacon burger the bacon is on the crispy side. I usually get the bigger burger and that meal fills you up right. Today found me in serious need of a burger fix. Living in Owasso, there are some options, but they also get used pretty regularly, and I wanted something different. So I schlepped my butt into Tulsa, heading for Hank's on Admiral. Thanks, Covid... Hank's wasn't open. Not sure if it was just today or what. So, on to the next closest burger joint, Freddie's on 11th. Totally packed. Not gonna wait. I gave Yelp! a quick look (not while driving, so untwist those panties), and laid my eyes on Ty's. Now, I've known about Ty's for years, but not being a regular in the 15th and Harvard area, I'm almost never there. Not so today. I landed in the parking lot and made my way inside. You order at the counter from a menu that's short and to the point. Basic burgers, a patty melt and blackened chicken sandwich are offered up, as well as some chicken nuggets for those picky eaters (like The Kid). I opted for a 1/3lb hickory cheese burger, 1/2 order of Q's (curly fries), and a cup of homemade chili. Or so it says, anyway. Ordering took a little while, since there were a couple of people in line, and Ty's is strictly old school. Orders handwritten on a roll of adding machine paper and carried to the kitchen, with your drink on the return trip. Seating was a little sparse (thanks again, Covid.), but I found a corner booth. Overall the place is a little kitschy, rundown and the perfect dive burger bar atmosphere. Literally, I love the inside. I'd rather eat at place like this than a shiny new hi tech music pounding chrome and plastic franchise burger joint. Every.Damn.Time. So the food arrived in due time... a little longer than I would have expected, but there was a fairly large group of parents and soccer kids en route to a tournament, so that might have jammed things up a bit. It looked like there was one guy in the back manning the grill, so patience is extended in this instance. The 1/2 order of fries is easily more than any one normal person needs to eat at one time. I didn't finish all mine, even though they were delicious. As another reviewer mentioned, they definitely need a good smack with the salt shaker right out of the oil, as I had to salt mine pretty rigorously. The burger was well done. Solid, nicely prepared and flavorful. It looked good sitting in the basket, albeit a little dwarfed by that mountain of fries. Cooked well, it had a great flavor, the hickory was subtle but there, and the toppings were all in good proportion and fresh. Well done job. The chili was good as well. When you order a cup, well, you get a cup full. A coffee cup, that is. For the price, it was a very generous serving. As for the homemade, I can't say. It was highly reminiscent of Chili Bowl chile. That said, I grew up on CB chili and love it. So whether this was homemade or not, it was good and I ate it all. And I won't hesitate to get it again the next time I drop in. Again, Ty's is a little out of the way for me, but I will certainly return the next occasion that time and location allow. read more

First time back to Ty's since the change in management/ownership. I noticed the outside signs displaying Mexican food and figured it had turned into a different restaurant. I was wrong. We were driving by after an appointment, on our way to Fixins downtown. I mentioned to my partner that recently I noticed very positive reviews and since she loved the old Ty's, we whipped around and were immediately greeted when we entered. There was only one other couple in the restaurant who were just ordering at the counter. When it was our turn, we each got the 1/4 lb. Cheeseburger ($7.15). We got an order of Curly Que Fries ($2.25) to share because they were huge. We each got a soft dring ($2.25) and seated ourselves by the front window. There was one cook in the kitchen and the lady who took our order brought out the food to our table. It's a clean place and the burgers and fries were exactly as we remembered. Ty's has been around forever and I hope it lasts. We had lunch around 2:30, so maybe that explains why there weren't more customers. The tab for our meal was $25.58. With the $10 tip, it came to $35.58 (which is still cheaper than it would have been at Fixins). read more

I'm a retired restaurant owner and I feel appalled for the owner. Unfortunately, a small business like Ty's will not be successful without the presence of the owner. Suggestion: 1. Clear all the junk from hallway between kitchen and game room. 2. Make the game/pool room comfortable for customers. Clear out the junk and clean it! 3. Always have an older adult managing young staff. Manager you have was very nice and refunded for kids food, but staff (young girls) working there are horrible. 4. Stopped to visit a local landmark in Tulsa today, Ty's hamburgers. When I worked downtown, this was on our weekly rotation and sadly had to forego all restaurants during the pandemic. They had outside seating and that was a plus for us. Same great hamburgers with the onions fried in. I had the third pound cheeseburger with Q's. Burger was cooked perfectly, and a big portion of hot fries. They had a specials board out front with three or four combo deals. The owners are always so friendly and engaging. It was great to get back to an old favorite. We need to support the locals to help them get back on their feet. We sat outside where the traffic was a bit noisy but it was a beautiful day and inside there was plenty of room to spread out. Service was perfect and we will be putting it back in our post pandemic rotation. read more

This was the first time visiting this place, even though I've lived in Tulsa forever. I was lucky to be off early on a recent Friday afternoon so I stopped in after making an appt with its neighbor Pen & Ink Tattoo. I'm never off during the week before 3:30 so I figured I would check them out. Old-school decor, and well worn seating surrounded the smallish space. Menu is up front, with prices clearly marked. I asked for suggestions, since it was my first visit and the employee suggested the onion rings (though I had taken a peek at some other yelp reviews and their pics and noticed the onion rings look like the frozen kind with the heavy batter on them). I chose the Q's since the pictures show them as fresh cut, not previously frozen. I ordered the 1/3 lb cheeseburger with onions fried in (no other toppings, since I wanted to try the burger on its own). Food was cooked up fresh and quick. Slightly disappointed that the buns were tiny compared to the burger patty, like the buns were half the size. The fries were not salted and fries need to be salted immediately out of the fryer to enhance the flavor. Overall, the burger was good, but the fries were lacking. Since they have some weird hours, it will be a while before I return. read more

I grew up enjoying a location in Muskogee, Ok. My family was sad to see that location close down back in the early 90's I believe (could be late 80's). Right before Covid hit, my mother told me that she found a Ty's that looked just how the old Muskogee location looked. I finally visited Tulsa during their business hours & I felt like I'd stepped back into my childhood! The decor, the menu displays, everything was just like I'd remembered as a kid. When I received my order, I honestly caught myself getting emotional over the experience since I'd recently lost my mother & we weren't able to share that experience like we planned. But a HUGE thank you to this place for still being so original & so amazing!!! You just don't find places that keep the same taste/experience like Ty's has done!!!! The owners kids were waiting on us and they kept fighting over an ornament (playfully) but extremely loud and kept ignoring we were even there (we were the only customers). We finally were able to try Ty's today for lunch!! The bourse are limited as they are only open from 11-3:30. Our experience was good! The young women in a knee brace taking orders was very kind! I got the hickory burger and LOVED the hickory sauce!! My husband got a cheeseburger and enjoyed it!! We also shared an order of tots and still had to get a small box to take home!! I loved the feeling inside and they had a game room but we didn't check that out as we're crunching on time. They have the best shaved like ice as well!! The only negative thing I have to say about our experience here was the owner took a call on the phone and seemed like she was getting a scam caller and raised her voice and was having an attitude on the phone.
