This is the best place for sushi in the area. Great for casual takeout . I order here every week especially during quarantine and they never disappoint . We usually get the fried rice , a bunch of sushi rolls and vegetable tempura and it never take more than an hour. read more

I've ordered sushi for takeout here a couple times because it's really close to my apartment. Each time I've found that my order is ready quickly and the employees are nice. However, the food is very mediocre. The rice tastes bland and they tend to give pretty small pieces of fish. Their miso soup also lacks flavor, and the salad that comes with the lunch combo is basically just iceberg lettuce. Overall, it's adequate but there's way better sushi in the area. read more

This unassuming hole-in-the-wall is a pleasant surprise. Their lunch sushi set is a deal for $9- you get 2 maki of your choice from a set list (but the list contains some fancy rolls) plus miso soup and a salad with peanut dressing. Had myself the crazy roll (4 pieces) and the Philie roll (6 pieces) and both were fresh and flavorful, as were the soup and salad (which had lots of dressing and actual carrots and cukes amid the lettuce). The Grubhub order took 2 hours to get to my place. Called few times and I can't track the order correctly online. The chicken and rice are cold. I ordered my dragon maki with brown rice which they charged me 1 extra dollar, but the rolls came with white rice. And the food are so expensive for the quality and quantity. Food took two hours last night on Valentines day and ruined the night for my fiance and myself. I called them a bunch and each time it was "15 more minutes." Well you said that 30 minutes ago! Lady on the phone told me that it was real busy which is the reason for delay. Funny, because when you order on grubhub it gives you an estimated time of arrival. I asked her why she didn't call me and tell me it was going to be so long. She had no answer for that. Finally she asked what she could do for me to make me happy (nothing) and that the best she can do is 30% off. I would have gladly paid the 30% if the food was going to be there in acceptable time frame. I told her that two hour delivery was unacceptable, to which said that it was acceptable because they were busy. SERIOUSLY?! I told her I didn't like having raw fish un-refrigerated for two hours to which she said I didn't have any raw fish. Umm yes I had a spicy yellowtail and spicy tuna. Then she told me that it was OK to have raw fish refrigerated since it was a Maki roll and not negeri or sashimi. Not sure the board of health would agree with that one. TL;DR version: The food is quite good, but pricey. The atmosphere's great, and it's solid for take-out, but there's a phone order language barrier. Definitely worth a try if you're not looking for the cheapest sushi you can get. ------------------------------------------------------ Like the other reviewers, I was sad to see Ginga go. I live a block away, and they all knew me when I walked in the door. I'd watch them make my sushi, conversing with them about whatever we had in common - Boston sports, the restaurant business, raw fish, whatever. So I was pretty surprised when, seemingly overnight, Ginga was gone and in its place stood U-Sushi (or Sushi U... I wasn't sure). Turns out, the owners decided to move back to their native Vietnam. So it took a few weeks, but I decided to give the new place a try. The first thing you should know is that sushi in Brookline isn't cheap. To get any reasonable amount of food (some might say, "don't order sushi!"), you've got to spend 10-20% more than comparable food in the suburbs. That said, U-Sushi is probably a bit pricier than the standards of Coolidge Corner (Fugakyu notwithstanding); I consider $6.50 for a spicy salmon roll to be overpriced, unless you're at Oiishi or Fugakyu or one of the other high-end places. Their lunch specials - like those of Ginga before - are a much better bargain, and are highly recommended. So for overall price, I give them 2*. The atmosphere was lovely - much better seating, much nicer lighting, and just a better overall vibe. Dine-in gets a 5*. The new owners are very, very nice, and chatting with me the entire time I was waiting for my order - definitely did a great job winning me over. That said, as previous reviewers have mentioned, they're Chinese, and Cantonese is their first language - so expect a language barrier over the phone, and be patient. Once their online ordering system is in place - and I do hope that's soon, for their sake - you should consider using it rather than calling. Carry-out got a 5* experience (they offered me water or tea; I appreciated that fact, even though he brought me the one I didn't ask for), but I could imagine that delivery would be tougher because of the language issue. Call that a presumed 3* experience. Now, the food... that's a different story. The fish was very fresh and tasty - I love the buttery flavor that a good piece of salmon or white tuna sashimi has. The spicy salmon roll was kind of sloppy, and didn't have as much crunch to it as I remember, which was disappointing. I'm told that the sweet potato tempura roll was quite good, and the avocado was definitely delicious and ripe. 4* for the food, although if I'm being totally forthcoming, it's a low 4* because spicy salmon maki is my favorite - and theirs doesn't rank high on my list. Incidentally, the chefs are the same guys that were working at Ginga - no change there. The menu has changed a bit (mostly it got more expensive), but most of the items remain the same. So add it all up, and we have 2*, 5*, 5*, 3*, 4* - that's 19 of a possibly 25 points, meaning they're a pretty solid 4*. I will return - but because price is something of which I'm cognizant, I may not return as often as I did before the changeover. read more

My boyfriend and I were walking around the area and trying to find a good place for lunch. We walked in U-Sushi to check out the menu and decided to give it try. It turned out to be a great experience! They even serve lunch specials (which are absolutely great deals!!!!!!) on Sundays until 5pm! We had the lunch specials of pork katsu box, spicy salmon roll and spicy tuna rolls with two miso soup and salads for only $17.00! and they were all very good: nice presentation, fresh and amazing tasting spicy salmon/tuna rolls, and great salad! My boyfriend and I are both big sushi fans and have a lot of experience eating out in sushi restaurants. We are both shocked to find it only got 2-1/2 stars on Yelp and decide to give it a fair review. It's a small restaurant (capacity of about 15 people), but the atmosphere is very nice, trendy, and romantic. Regarding the first review that gave the place only one star, as I can only respond to that based on my own experience (have only been there once and did not have the experience of ordering over the phone). I recognized that the waitress and the manager/owner were talking in Cantonese. However, we did not find any problem communicating in English the whole time (I am a Chinese and my boyfriend is an American). The service is good and friendly. We don't live in Brookline but will definitely come back here sometime for dinner as they do have a good dinner menu. read more

Okay, seriously the best and most affordable sushi in Brookline or Boston area. We can't wait to make this regular dinner place. Definitely get the vegetable tempura to start. We were pleasantly surprised at the serving sizes and delicious sauce it's served with. The sashimi was perfect fresh with perfect temperature. We chose yellow tail and even bought two orders of 3 pieces because it was so good. Very thick slices. We shared three rolls, wine and dessert and it was around fifty bucks! I am visiting my sister in Boston and tagged along with her and her coworkers for a small birthday celebration. This was a small sushi restaurant with only a handful of tables making it a great location for the small gathering. The sushi was reasonably priced and there was a wide variety. My sister and I both split the spicy yellowtail maki, spider maki, and crazy maki. Theses were all delicious and I had no complaints. My sister additionally ordered the udon noodles with chicken. I tried a few bites and found the dish to be enjoyable. i would recommend this sushi restaurant to friends visiting Boston and would return on a future trip. read more

I was sad to see Ginga go. U-Sushi popped up fast in its place after the owners decided to retire. Thankfully they still retain fresh sushi and friendly service at reasonable prices, so it's a similar win for the area. The inside got a new makeover. Gone is the long wooden booth and replaced with it are sleek tables with comfortable leather chairs. I always thought Ginga was a little bright, U-Sushi has new mood lighting with special effects that highlight the vibrant walls. Let's just say it has all the modern bells and whistles now. The food was fantastic. My hubby and I started with the mango salad and sashimi appetizer. The salad was a large portion of mango, avocado and greens with a very addicting sweet dressing. The sashimi pieces were chunky and fresh. We got the American Dream maki that didn't disappoint. The presentation of all the sushi was artistic. The specialty maki selection was vast. The menu is simplified with something for everyone. Service was prompt and friendly. The place was busy with customers like us, excited to check it out and they handled the rush perfectly. She woman on the phone called me after it had already been an hour, when it was supposed to be 45 minutes. The food was going to be late, they were going to be on their way in 15 minutes. There were no chop sticks and not a lot of soy sauce despite writing in the 'additional items' section that we would like extras of both. Will not be ordering from there again. Do not be fooled by this place's outward appearance. It is great! Yesterday I met my boyfriend after work in the Coolidge Corner area for dinner. He suggested U-Sushi. I argued at first because I did not want to go to an establishment that had branded themselves with a gimmicky name like U-Sushi- however I reluctantly followed him in. The second I walked in I knew my initial impression was wrong. The inside was beautiful! Their cushy leather chairs and cozy atmosphere will definitely make me a return customer. We were given the option to pick whatever table we like- it was 6:30 on a Friday and the place was oddly slow. For that reason I can't attest to how the staff is while the restaurant is busy- but while I was there the staff was very attentive! The food was good but nothing to write home about. There are certainly places to get higher quality sushi in the area but the prices are definitely competitive given the quality. Makes for a frugal and tasty lunch/dinner option. Overall I was very impressed! I give U-Sushi 5 stars because for their prices and their atmosphere they are my new favorite sushi place! read more

After 5 hours(!) of decorating pottery at the Clay Room, I demanded sustenance -- and U-Sushi was directly across the street. It looked cute and clean, so we decided to "roll" the dice. Prices: Affordable! For $30 we got four rolls (Scorpion, Snow Crab, Spider, Crazy), which left us stuffed silly. Honestly, three rolls would have been enough for the two of us. Flavors: Fresh! The Snow Crab was deliciously creamy and smooth, which made a great counterpoint to the crunchy, savory Spider roll. The Crazy maki had just the right balance of spicy mayo, and the Scorpion roll left a great first eel impression on my boyfriend. Ambiance: Cozy! Just a handful of tables and a few seats at the bar where you can watch all the action up-close. Service: Perfectly timed! And friendly -- I got the sense our server was genuinely happy to see us. Had a great experience today. We stumbled upon this gem after an epic fail experience at a nearby establishment. What luck! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the hostess who seated us immediately. We were asked our drink order right away. After looking through the menu and finding so many amazing choices, we settled in the three maki rolls for $11.95 and the Sashimi Platter for the same price. What a steal! We also had the shrimp shumai (steamed). Yummy. Our soup and salad came our promptly after we ordered. The salad dressing is so refreshing and light. The miso was standard neck of the woods. Our shrimp shumai came right after. Tasty. Our server was very conscientious about the food on our table and brought our sushi promptly after our appetizers were done. The sushi was so fresh! I've had salmon in the past for lunch specials and could taste the fishiness. This time around, we were very pleased to taste nothing but freshness. I've ordered take out through U Sushi quite a few times. The ingredients are fresh, delicious, and everything is quite fairly priced. I'm a big fan of the maki lunch specials that come with miso soup and salad. It's all excellent. Recently, I ordered take out from them and they accidentally gave me regular salmon maki, and not spicy salmon maki like I ordered. I called to inform them, and told them I would eat it anyway. Unlike many places, they wanted to make things right and I was refunded 30% of my order through Foodler. Very impressed that they care about making their customers happy. Really good sushi with reasonable prices. The place is small, maybe less than 20 seats, but the quality is good and service is great. We were in a hurry and they cranked out our order in no time. I'd definitely go again. If you want to try something different, the Black Widow Maki (sweet potato) is pretty good. Definitely not traditional, but good. I'd never had sweet potato sushi until I went to the Boston area. Maki rolls are ony 6 pieces (most places are 8-10), but prices are lower so you're not paying more for less. I've had U-sushi delivered twice now, and I am a huge fan. They have not messed up on any substitutions (I have some food allergies that I worry about at sushi places sometimes), which is extremely common for me at other restaurants! They deliver very quickly and the food is reasonably priced and tasty! I highly recommend crazy maki roll, spicy tuna maki roll, and the tuna jalapeño maki roll.
