Uchi in Japanese means the best sushi you'll ever have.... I just made that up, but that's exactly what the it was. Uchi actually means, "family" or "household" and with a delightful cozy atmosphere, a welcoming staff, and comfortable furniture, they lived up to it and more. Our waitress, Stephanie, & Co killed it. We let her know we were looking to spend $200 a person and gave her some do's and don'ts for our food and she did not flinch. She picked out the food for us and each of the 35 different bites/plates was pleasantly like nothing we've ever had before. Stopped by here for a HH and was greeted by a snobbish hostess (hence 4 stars). The bar was packed, and while their website states daily HH till 7, we were told it ends at 6:30. If this is considered the best sushi in Miami, then Miami must not have great sushi at all. Service was inattentive. It took almost 20 minutes after placing our inital drink order from them to come back and order the omakase. Didn't really come back often until it was time to give a smile and hand a check. The omakase wasn't worth what the asking price was. Plenty of better tasting courses on the West Coast compared to this. Stand out selections were the aodai, chuutoro and the wagyu nigiri. There was a flavorful bokchoy dish that was served in the middle of the course which sauce was so strong it destroyed most of the next dishes since it just kept on lingering no matter how much you tried to wash it away. The waiter we got really put a damper on the entire experience. I've been to the original Uchi in Austin when it first opened, and comparing that experience to this new Miami branch is a far cry from what I had hoped for. To start, our drinks didn't come out until after we placed our order and had to ask multiple people multiple times where if they could help us with the whiskey neats we ordered. We were told they either couldn't find the bottle or had run out of our whiskey choice--a frustrating start. To make matters worse, the wait staff didn't seem to have much knowledge about sushi. When I asked which fish they had freshly flown in, I got a generic "it's all fresh, of course" response, followed by an attempt to upsell us on the cooked dishes. I don't doubt those dishes are good, but I came to Uchi for sushi, not for someone to steer me away from it. The food itself, once it arrived, was fine--some dishes even great (chicken karaage - chicken in a box) --but the service really tarnished the overall experience. For a brand known for its meticulous attention to detail and high standards for sushi (Uchi TX being dubbed one of the best sushi places in the entire US), this Miami location was not even close. Hopefully, they work out the kinks because the potential is there, but this visit left me missing the Austin original and i would probably never come back. read more

Favorites are always Hama Chili, Hot Rock, Walu Walu, Brussels, and all of the Nigiri, of course. Don't sleep on the snow crab or 72-hour short rib. Uchi is a unique dining experience. It begins at the door where they only allow one group to check in at a time. Everyone else has to wait outside. I sat down at the sushi bar where my own dedicated chef catered to my needs. I also had a server to bring my drinks. I tried some items from the happy hour menu: sake (salmon) nigiri, bluefin (tuna) zuke nigiri, and the hamachi temaki. They were very tasty, but necessarily the best sushi I've ever had. I had heard such great things about their omakase special and was super excited to try it. We had a reservation for 5 right when the restaurant opened up for dinner and left leaving at almost 8... and hungry. The dishes take too long in between to actually enjoy the experience and our waiter just kept telling us the sushi bar was busy. Half way through the omakase we still felt pretty hungry so we ordered some extra hand rolls. Unfortunately the menu did not state the roll had cilantro and as someone with the soap gene (ikyk) I did not enjoy it. Born and raised in Miami, I was very disappointed by the service. Our waiter was not friendly and I don't need a upbeat waiter but at least not giving dry responses would've been nice. She also stated "you look like you're ready to tap out." I was nervous there would be a wait especially on a weekend & it being happy hour but they were able to sit us at the bar right away. It was a GNO on a Monday night. It was pretty packed and it wasn't too loud. We are here to visit Miami and thought we try out Uchi here since we've had it in Austin and Houston. We were greeted at the door and sat down quickly. Fish was good and fresh. We got chicken and it was still very raw. We called the waiter and they took it away immediately and did apologize. They replaced everyone's plates and chopsticks, brought out complimentary drinks and desserts. The food overall was okay. Some dishes were great and some were very different from Houston. Overall I probably wouldn't swing by this location again. I would definitely try another sushi restaurant. read more

I have dined here twice. On both occasions, service was excellent and high noon old fashioneds were flowing as we sat in a comfortable banquette in a beautifully decorated space. While the menu can seem overwhelming for some at first, Uchi is an experience that is never rushed and you're never forced out of your seat or forced into a set reservation time. This makes for a lovely experience where you can try different items and have cocktails and eat in a relaxed atmosphere with an amazing server like Nicole recommending items as you go. Last night on my girlfriend's birthday, for example, we dined here for about 3 hours. On both occasions, the star bites were the foie gras and eggplant pieces that melt in your mouth, the 72 hour cooked short rib and the trumpet mushroom in brown butter. The hama chili that made the chef famous in Austin is always a fan favorite. Eat it with a spoon so you can enjoy that delicious sauce. The steak tartare with black garlic was a special for us and I highly recommend it. We also had the chicken Karage and it was so good we ordered two orders. It's a pretty large portion and the chicken is deliciously seasoned. Nicole made the night extra special with the wala wala and the bok choy. The wala wala was a deliciously prepared white fish that everyone should order. The bok choy was also really good and Uchi overall does an amazing job preparing vegetables. For dessert, we finished with the milk ballS. The milk balls are a must have and you'll see why. Three normally come to an order but Nicole added a fourth since we were a party of four. She was extremely accommodating and sweet. Thank you Nicole and thank you to Uchi for such a great birthday experience. Highly recommend celebrating your birthday or next event here. Great dining experience, but be prepared to empty your wallets because this place is very expensive but worth it ( for the most part). A few distinguishing factors that really drew me in is the fact that they have a huge selection from Toyosu (Japanese fish market) as well at the bluefin tuna selection and Japanese whiskey options. This place is pricey but do splurge on bluefin and the Toyosu fish selection like the Japanese sea bream. Try not to get the typical fish that you see on the daily. Memorable dishes- bluefin, king trumpet mushroom, madai crudo (sea bream fish), oysters, Kinoko nabe with gyutoro (rice hot pot with short ribs). Honestly, everything was really delicious. The one thing I think is not worth it is the snow crab. I forgot to take a picture but it was a thin slice for $15. I love eating crab and have eaten a lot of expensive and delicious crab dishes, but this one was not worth it! I'll pass next time. There is a $350 option for omakase style which serves two people and provides 10 dishes as selected by the chef. The price varies based on the market. This is a great option for people who can't decide what to eat and want to explore. We did not pick this option since we wanted to order specific dishes. We ended up with 12 dishes( including dessert) and probably spent $310 on food before tax and tip. There is also a six course omakase option for $100(price depends on mkt) so this is a good option if you want both experiences. Comparing this to other pricey sushi establishments, I prefer this place than the fancy one in downtown at the Epic (intentionally left restating name out). My brother and his gf took us here since they have been there twice so far and said it's their #1 favorite spot in Miami. Walu Walu- Another of my favorite dish. The Escolar fish was amazing and the sauce is chefs kiss. You can also dip it with other dishes to make it even vetter and even pour it onto the crispy rice dish. Oysters - It was my first time trying oysters and I love it. I think it's the sauce they put on the oysters that doesn't make it slimy. Waygu Carpaccio- Thinly sliced waygu with some mushroom and other toppings I'm not too sure about. It was very rich, delicious, but I couldn't eat too much of it. The beef was delicious, but the toppings are a bit too heavy. Sake & Bincho Nigiri - a solid nigiri sushi. fresh fish and a small and perfect portion of rice. Sake & Bincho Makimono- sushi rolls were great. The sauce on the Salmon roll were delicious and different. Rice crispy - The rice is delicious and has a crispy edge. The rice is filled and kind of tastes like furikakte rice. Masu Pom- my least favorite dish. The fish was fresh but not my type of flavor dish. Fried Milk - my favorite and different dessert I have experienced. The fried milk ball was my favorite part! I wish there were more. Crunchy on the outside and burst of milk on the inside. Jasmine Cream- Beautiful presentation! The first bite was odd for me since I had never eaten anything like this in my palette. It's still delicious and had a cremany, crunchy and sweet flavor. All the food was delicious and different from what I had tasted before. The presentation on the dishes was beautiful, even for happy your entrees. Also, the server was very nice and helpful. We got seated in a booth at first but another friend joined us later on and the host didn't even hesitate to sit us at a bigger table. That's service. We basically ordered everything from the happy hour menu..lol. We got everything from the Makimono, Nigiri, and the Tastings menu. My favs were the hamachi chili, sake, yokai berry, wagyu yakitori, and the walu walu. They used to have these oysters with coconut foam on top but they're not on the menu anymore. Uchi is a yes everytime! I've been here a few times but most recently got a tuna and salmon nigiri, the spicy crunchy tuna roll, tako maki roll and the karaage fried chicken.
