I was here last week with a loved one for a surgery that could only be done at this location. Please do not be fooled by University of Chicago's name attached to it...it is still Ingalls. The service had pockets of decency but there are so many areas of improvement. The patient food service was horrible, the food was absolutely gross. There were a few decent staff members during the visit. Parts of the rooms had dated furniture, smells that made u wanna puke. My loved one's pressure/heart rate decreased and if I wasn't in the room, he could have passed away. I was the one who asked the staff to assist. read more

Mom has been in here for eight days. She came in because she had a severe staff infection. Resulted in needing surgery. PCP hasn't been in see her. Surgeon has visited a couple times. Her delayed release is allegedly due to awaiting a test result. But I'm not so sure that is the case. Transparency isn't paramount. The hospital gives off a terminal sense of dread. From the dank smell, the drab furnishings, to the dark isolation rooms. A large institution, I can only assume that this wing is for those with Medicare, Medicaid, etc type insurances. read more

Went to University of Chicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital outpatient yesterday to get an X-ray . First time going to that location. LOVED IT and would go back! Easy to park. Easy to check in. Wait time was very reasonable. Staff were friendly. In fact, when I first arrived and didn't know where to go was helped by an employee who was sitting down in a waiting area at the entrance and clearly not "on the clock". So kind! Because of severe abuse by staff I now rip my hair out in large chunks. I left this hospital with my hair no longer than three inches as I ripped it out due to stress. I broke one of my teeth down to the gumline from having flashbacks of abusive staff. This is a wretched place that's filthy and uses drugs as corporal punishment. The damage they caused is lifelong and I'll never be ok again my response to stress now is I automatically tear out chunks of my hair I'll probably not have hair for the rest of my life. Then they had the nerve to tell me I received care. I am in such poor condition and my PTSD has now turned into CPTSD I can barely function. read more

My husband had to go to the emergency room at UC Ingalls in Harvey. I found the emergency room staff uncaring and indifferent. Also, once admitted into the hospital the bedside matter went down hill from there. In the room the couch was ripped and torn. The telephone was in a cabinet that was not accessible for my husband who had just had surgery. I had to look for it. One day he didn't get breakfast and when he was finally discharged they allowed him to leave without the use of a wheel chair, which I could not believe. This hospital needs more support from the corporate office to make it as high functioning and caring about patients as the one in Chicago. The community deserves better! read more

This by far has to be the worst hospital by far that I've seen in a long long time. I came here about 3am on Tuesday morning in a hypertensive crisis with a BP of 199/114. They stick me in waiting room I'm assuming waiting to stroke out or have heart attack on floor (I've never had BP issue before) I finally left at 10am still in waiting room and went to urgent care. I suggest going here for a broken bone or a paper cut or something similar if it's a matter of life and death this would be my last choice in the future. Ingalls Hospital is the absolute worst. The staff is the worst! The nurses and unit secretaries are clueless and lack compassion for family members of patients and are rude. Just simply trying to reach a patient or nurse on the phone for an update takes 6 phone calls before you reach the right person. And when you do no one has the time to speak with you concerning the patients care/health. I have never experienced such ghetto ignorance at a hospital in my life. My father is presently in Ingalls, They lost his phone, he had to be moved because the room next door had bed bugs. He has a gastric tube in his throat , they were to insert another tube on Friday so that he could have more protein in his feeding. There was a mix up in scheduling so therefore he has to rely on the gastric feeding tube until Monday. The nurse has 4 inch yellow fingernails wears no gloves. This is unsanitary. The nurses are unprofessional and not properly trained. Only one nurse named Theresa is excellent on the 4th floor. The cardiologist touched my fathers stomach for 5 seconds and said his heart is okay. Unbelievable!! Will they find my fathers phone? Will they compensate him for his loss? Will my father leave the hospital with the best of care? The social worker was ready to send him to rehab before his stomach problem was resolved .The primary doctor looked out for him and said no way will he be going anywhere until we resolve his illness. He has been in bed For 11 days . Waiting for him to get better so he can go to rehab and come home. read more

I am disabled and my Dr. wanted an MRI of my neck due to pain plus numbness in my face and ear. The MRI Tech did not care about my condition or disability. I have to use a cane or walker and I must walk slowly and carefully. She rushed me through the whole process. She was very rude and I felt in fear of my health. I was very dizzy, disorientated, and my heart was racing after having the MRI. I explained this to her and she tried to rush me out. When I took my ear plugs out and tried to hand them to her she accused me of throwing them on the floor. She would not help me get off the table or get to the dressing room to get my belongings. I felt very scared and in fear. This women was not caring or a responsible healthcare worker. She put my health in risk. I would be very scared to ever go there again. read more

I live in the area and because of a couple of reason I didn't want to drive into the city to go to the main campus so I said why not well I check in @ 8pm it is now 2:12 am and I am still waiting to be seen by a doctor, I have chest pain yes cardiac chest pain, there "s also a lady here with difficulty breathing and she has been waiting for Two hours and counting, everyone that has been call back don't appear to be in any serious distress, there are homeless people sleeping in the lobby and staff just walking around doing nothing, this shocking, as a nurse this is awful and should not be tolerated but it's in the community so this is what we get. The problem with Ingalls ER is the staff they appear not to care at all. They don't practice standards of care. You actually could be having a stroke or heart attack in the waiting room the triage nurse could care less. This happened on two occasions my mother in law was having a hemorrhagic stroke and was taken back. Then on April 2 I brought my husband in by wheelchair the triage nurse ignored him though there was no one in the Er. The ER tech brought him back he was white as a ghost excessive sweating cold and clammy. I would not recommend you take your pet dog there. Obviously Ingalls does not care to improve the quality of nurses in ER. read more

Nicki, the clinical manager on 4E was so rude to me. She should just retire. I am a travel nurse and have been working as a nurse for 5 years. This place uses an outdated and very complex computer program called cerner. I started my first day (12-hour shift) without any training nor anyone to acclimate me to the work environment. For God's sake they couldn't even give me a name badge. So as I'm caring for patients, I'm unidentifiable. I had no clue where anything was. After getting through my first day, I immediately call my agency to tell them that I never received my promised 4 hours of training. They tell me that I will get that training my next work day. On my next workday, Nicki places me with an overworked nurse who has no time to go over anything with me. 4 hours pass, I'm still unsure about the program but continue to keep my patients safe. Nicki approached me and insists that I take on a new assignment by myself. I told her how I still have yet to receive training. She tells me, well your 4 hours are up. I simply let her know how unprofessional this hospital is and how dangerous things can get if they don't simply train travel nurses on this outdated system. I told her if I can't get at least an hour of one-on-one training that I will contact my agency. She walked off. I called my agency and they were furious. Long story short, Nicki refused to give me the promised training, and she told me to go home. I was wrongfully terminated because I simply wanted education on a system so that I can do my job better as a nurse. This is not only a lawsuit but shows that this company has unethical professional who practice unethical policies. Please do not send your loved ones here, because they hire travel nurses and throw them out on the floor without name badges or any sorts of training to their environment or computer program! read more

My mother was on the 4th floor of Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, IL from 9/13/2022 to 9/22/2022. During her time on the 4th floor of the hospital, she was treating like an animal and not as a human being. After several days on the 4th floor, my mother was too weak to get out of bed and had to use a bed pan. The nurses gave my mother bowel preparation medicine the night before she was scheduled to have a colonoscopy to determine why she was losing blood. The night before the scheduled procedure, the nurses made my mother lie in her feces for hours without cleaning her body. My mother had COPD and the nurses let her go two hours without oxygen on her face and no one came to her rescue. Late that night, she called me gasping for air and begging me to come and help her. It was the worse night of my life hearing the fear and anger in my mother's voice. That night, my mother's oxygen level went from approximately 90% to 50% over a two-hour period and she laid in that bed gasping for air unable to breath. I refused to leave my mother alone at night on the 4th floor after the horrific night of lying in her feces and no one coming to her rescue when her oxygen level dropped to a dangerous level. My mother never had the colonoscopy and was placed on a BiPap machine. I demanded to stay at the hospital with her and saw how awful the nurses treated my mother even with me there to see their behavior. When I called the nurses and asked for help when my mother needed assistance: 1. One nurse didn't keep her phone with her. 2. Some nurses never answered the phone. 3. One nurse told me to clean my mother myself. One night, the nurse put a catheter in my mother incorrectly, and my mother lied in her urine. When I walked out to the hallway seeking help, the nurses stated it was not their patient. On 9/20/2022, my mother cried out saying "I just want to be treated with respect". On 9/22/2022, I noticed my mother's oxygen level was decreasing even though she appeared to be sleeping and the BiPap machine was securely on her face. I called the nurse and she said, "let her sleep, what do you want me to do". I begged and hollered asking for someone to help me. When the male nurse came to the room, he stated her vital signs look normal. I begged him not to leave because I could tell there was something wrong with my mother's calm body. I kept saying, "her oxygen level should not be decreasing because she is not moving". If I didn't demand to stay with my mother at night and screamed for help, my mother would have died alone on the 4th floor on 9/22/2022 because no one ever came to her room when the monitor alarms went off. On 9/22/2002, my mother was transported to the critical care unit and died on 9/24/2022. It is unfortunate that patients get pneumonia in the hospital; but is reprehensible to be treated so poorly at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, IL. I made a formal complaint to patient advocate and learned the treatment that my mother received was common in that hospital, management is aware how patients are mistreated, and families continue to file complaints with no significant changes being made. My mother worked in the healthcare industry caring for others and all she wanted was to be treated with respect and die with dignity. read more

The University of Chicago Medicine purchased Ingalls Health System in 2016. It is located in a predominately African American Community in Harvey, Illinois. The University of Chicago did not bring the facility or the employees etiquette up to the same standards as The University of Chicago in Hyde Park. Chicago (Hyde Park Campus) offers curb appeal as it is Multicultural. They should be ashamed of themselves not bringing that facility to the same curb appeal. I went to visit a patient today and I was very disappointed. Not to mention security seemed scarce so I wanted to leave while it was daylight. I worked at a HealthCare System in Florida that owed several hospitals/facilities. They all had curb appeal and the standards were the same at all facilities. When I walked into Ingalls today, the Associates in the main entrance were Excellent, the Gift shop associate was friendly and professional. Once I got to the 4th Floor, I was in the land of "HELP LESS" the only Associate that made eye contact with me was the nice warm professional associate Serving meals. The other Associates "HELPED LESS". I asked one associate I think was a nurse a question and she actually got smart with me. Then I clarified the question to an elementary level then "Nurse HELP LESS" answered the question. I walked past the nursing station lost hoping to find my way out but two employees engaged in a personal conversation "HELPED LESS" and did not bat an eye as I proceeded unknowingly to go the wrong direction. Again I walked pass the Nursing Station still no there was offer to assist me. EmIn 2016 when The University of Chicago purchased Ingalls Hospital they promised to "Offer Unparalleled Care to Chicago's South Side and Southland" it looks like they treat this location like a stepchild in every sense of the word. Disappointing. I have never had a good experience at this hospital. My family member was brought here by an ambulance. I have been waiting for 5 hours with no info. People in the waiting room that came on their own have been waiting 10+ hours. Some are doubled over in pain and another with a colostomy bag that is damaged. The staff is not welcoming and limited to giving the same pre-scripted responses to most questions. Unfortunately it is the closest hospital and the ambulance and insurance require that we go to the nearest hospital in cases of emergency. However it defeats the purpose when you have to wait long anyway. I could have driven an additional 30 minutes and received quality, efficient, and courteous care. Unfortunately doctors and hospitals get paid regardless of the quality of service. read more

I have spent days on end speaking with different departments, md, Care Connection,and who ever else to try an find a Mental Health doctor for a family member that has Illini Care. I have been told that I have to search each and every doctor on the website and contact them individually, or one by one and ask if they accept Illini Care. This insurance does not show on there website. This is very time consuming and not productive read more

Absolute trash. I am an immunocompromised covid negative patient in a room next to a room with a covid positive patient! They co hort and co mingle their covid positive patients!!! I was talking to another patient who told me she had to get tested because of an exposure to her previous roommate. I got up an left. Management did nothing. Acted like this is normal and covid isn't spread through the air which we are both breathing. Stay away!! They are probably giving us covid for the $$$ read more

We took my mother here twice, and both times the only word that comes to my mind is CONFUSION. The first time, the general doctor had no idea what the specialist was doing... and gave a contradictory prognosis. My mother had to wait 2 days to get an MRI because her paper work was lost as we thought she may have had a stroke. The MRI people on the other floor never received the paperwork. Then to top it off, the original paperwork when we checked in was lost. We were very close to leaving the hospital after 2 days of no MRI or anything. Now, my mother is in the hospital for gallstones. Again, same issue. The general doctor is coming in and saying my mother can eat and will be checked out soon. Nurse is saying that she can't eat as they are going to remove her gallbladder. CONSFUSION. I am totally dissatisfied with the quality of service and attentiveness here. I called to find out they were not going to operate... and now I call and they have her in the operating room. WTF! read more

I was really impressed with the service on 8/10/16 my mother received while a patient at Ingalls Hospital and was a bit concerned to what level of medical care that she would get while there, because of the negative things I had heard about Ingalls Hospital. The nursing staff in the ER were very professional and attentive to my mother's (Gloria Wiggins-McEntee) medical needs. A special KUDOS to April and Shanae who exceptional nurses who worked in the ICU. They both provided wonderful nursing care, they were awesome. The worst hospital ever! I went into labor and was sent to a room. I changed into my gown and filled out the proper forms needed. My boyfriend was not allowed to be in the room with me because it was not the delivery room. I was told I had to get a COVID test done and waited 2 hours for the results to come back. I couldn't get epidural until my COVID test came back negative. Finally results came back and the baby was literally coming out. One nurse rushed to find my boyfriend in the lobby so he wouldn't miss the delivery but it was too late. This hospital ruined the most memorable experience you can ever have in a lifetime. I have had 2 babies and a surgery at Ingalls over the years and now they are connected with UChicago it's great. I had surgery for kidney cancer 12/14 and was very satisfied with the surgery and doctor care. Nursing care was also good. It was over crowded after surgery so I was put on a orthopedic floor which confused the staff but I still had good care. The Physical Therapy staff is phenomenal, I had care for frozen shoulder and some nerve pain later on. They really care. read more

I've been here 3 hours for hives. Saw the doctor for 2 minutes over an hour ago and no discharge papers yet. The staff does more laughing than working. The pharmacy will be close by the time I receive my prescription(s). They made sure the co-pay was paid before I left. I have mixed emotions about it Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey. My late husband was a patient there many times. It was his own fault but I'm not going to go into that. it has improved over the years and used to be a sick joke that says go to Ingalls and die. But after some bad issues they have corrected it for the most part. In any Hospital there's good and bad and sometimes the bad outweighs the good. But in general I like the service at Ingalls. I have only been a patient there once when I had my gallbladder removed. And the room they had me in was 4West and it was what I call the Ingalls Hilton and my late husband was with me and he enjoyed it because they had a couch that pulled out into a bed they gave him a pillow and a blanket and they had cable TV and he was happy and I was in pain LOL. The only bad thing is that the cafeteria has gotten worse and worse. What I mean is that the last time I went there cuz I had to go to the emergency room when I went in to the cafeteria it was very bare-bones. So I suggest that if you have somebody in the hospital bring your own food. But the one thing I want to warn you about is that if you're in the waiting room on the second floor which is surgery you cannot eat in there. Too many people would eat while waiting for their loved ones were in surgery and they wouldn't clean up really after themselves and they were loud. So they will ask you not to eat there and the volunteer ladies who are all senior citizens some will smile and others will look like you breathe wrong and the kick you out. They do have in the waiting room on the second floor they do have a candy machine and you can get chips in there plus coffee and tea. The coffee is a heck of a lot better than it used to be. Also bring something to read while waiting. They used to have magazines and then sometimes they don't so I could get you bring your own. And also they do have a TV actually a couple of TVs there. Well that's about all I'm going to say about Ingalls I mean no hospital was perfect and now since they're part of the University of Chicago I believe that it will turn around to be a even a more productive Hospital we can only hope. read more

This desperate hospital that I have never been to sent me some unsolicited mail about some test in Riverside for my arteries. Why in the hell would I let some dumpy hospital that I never heard of let them do a test on me? I spoke w/MY ACTUAL doctor at a real hospital who said the test was useless. This hospital in the hood is just trying to drum up business. I called the number and told them to take me the hell off their mailing list. Almost forgot, the envelope this test promotion came in had mt address typed by a typewriter. Yes, a typewrite!!! If the hospital cannot afford to have labels printed by a computer or have a computer, their test that I would never, ever take would scare the crap out of me. This hospital should just be shut down!!!
