Both of my parents are retirees of UCSD, so I like to visit the UCSD BOOKSTORE when I'm in town. To my knowledge, they've never purchased merch or received any swag during their years of service. Just an employee badge or lab coat. So, now that I am a current, remote employee, I like to pick things up for the fam...and for me! ;-) There's quite a huge selection of clothing, hats, pennants, and coffee ware. For my dad, I picked up a dad hat, which he wears often. For my mom, a hoodie and a tote. Not only are the designs cute, prices are reasonable, and are of good quality materials. I recently completed an employee survey and scored a free mini tote, similar to the ones at Trader Joe's! After my shopping spree, I like to head outdoors to lay in the hammocks near the fountain. Such a fun store! Not only do they carry nearly everything you can think of emblazoned with the Tritan name (their mascot), the store also carries a vast selection of things from computers, clothing, study aids for everything from 101 classes to medical school, really fun and eclectic stationary items, and also a superb selection of books, both academic and general, including children's, graphic novels, best sellers, more. If you have the inclination, you could easily while away an entire afternoon (or even a day!) just looking at the books. There are nearby eateries, should your blood sugar start to wane. read more

Bought a scanner (on-line) from the bookstore. Right away was suspicious as the cable was no in it's original packaging. Scanner Did Not Work! Download the latest software (so that wasn't the problem. Error message indicated USB cable not connected. But it was. I watched when they finished construction of the Price Center and the UCSD Bookstore. I visited early in morning when it was quiet and occasionally shrouded in fog. I loved those eerie mornings you couldn't see the treetops. I purchased my first Mac SE from the UCSD Bookstore. Apple was the first company to make computers with a graphical user interface and a mouse. I would come by every few months and grab an educational price list to see how much more I needed to save before my big purchase. When that day came I hurried home and started installing software from floppy disks. I never see those disks around anymore. I still have that sense of excitement when I buy a new computer. I returned to the UCSD Bookstore and purchased a Mac Quadra 610 which was the first computer with an optional card with an Intel cpu that allowed it to also run Microsoft Dos. Next I bought a Power Macintosh G3 which was the first tower computer with pastel colors. The Power Mac G4 Cube was the coolest looking computer I've owned. Reminds me of the Borg Cube. The Mac mini was the smallest desktop computer I've owned. My 2008 MacBook Pro was the first laptop computer to be made from a single piece of aluminum. I was here when the Bookstore occupied both floors of the space with the side entrance occupied by the Sunshine Store. In recent years Amazon has taken over that area and where the computers were. Now they are remodeling and Target is taking over the 2nd floor. I miss those early days when this place was filled with books and the old timer computer guys that could help me with my Sun Sparc problems or replace parts in my Mac. Finally visited for the 2021 SD Book Crawl and was surprised at the depth and quality of their selection! I would never consider University Bookstores to be "indie" prior to this visit. Things have changed since my undergrad days! The store has such a wide range of high quality books- from standard textbooks to children's books. I was impressed by their Asian literature selection as well as their graphic novels and child/teen literature. Of course they had typical university logo loungewear and millions of gift items for students and grads. I also loved the incredible selection of used literature from university courses- books I would never have found on my own. What a great way to sample some incredible literature without paying full tuition, lol! read more

Standard bookstore; nothing really stands out to me as I don't find it spectacular or anything. The prices are expensive, but to me, this is typical of any university bookstore. Customer service is generally good with the exception of a couple students who don't really like working there. I like to use this place for last minute gifts as well as take advantage of sales that are around every quarter. I don't recommend getting standard supplies here as they are usually above what you'd find at Best Buy or Target, but it's a nice store to have if you are in a pinch and you need something last minute. I will say that the coffee shop in the first floor is a nice extra and the Amazon locker is another bonus! Having said that, the 1 and 2 star reviews from Amazon customers not affiliated with UCSD are unfair. This Amazon locker is clearly for students who don't have the means to go off campus to get their Amazon packages unless it's close to school. There are tons of other Amazon lockers that are not located in a college campus and if you have a car, use it to go somewhere else. If you absolutely have to use this place, go here on Saturday or Sunday when there isn't any school and look up your parking options in advance. This would be my last location to pick up Amazon packages or process returns if I wasn't a faculty member or a student. Universities are notorious for bad traffic and no parking; isn't that common sense? read more

Personally as a Triton, I love UCSD no matter how ridiculously priced everything is. (Isn't every college like that, anyways?) The Bookstore has 3 floors: First floor (zero floor/basement): Perk's Coffee Shop! Service there is good, and they have indoor seating. So if you want to study and get a drink, choose to do so! Right next to it is Imprints, where students can get their passport photos taken, homework printed out (there are also self-serve computers that take Tritoncash) etcetera. Second Floor (first floor): Textbooks galore! I like that the textbooks are labeled by courses (ex: POLI SCI, HIEA, HUMM, BIO, CHEM) and this definitely makes it easier to purchase textbooks. On the other half, there are labcoats/scrubs, calendars, and books to read for fun if you have the time! There is also a local Apple Retail Store with laptops, printers, wires/cords. Third Floor (second floor): UCSD SWAG! Where you can purchase all your UCSD school gear! It's almost like a souvenir shop but expanded! There are cute teddy bears, mugs, cups, tshirts, etcetera. For a period of time they had a wall dedicated to Totoro pillows! There is also a stationary side on the other half of the room. Tips/Observations: -Restrooms are by the yoga mats/jewelry section (upstairs). -They have discounted areas by the elevators in the very back by the sports section. With a coffee shop at the bottom floor that offers studying and socializing areas and a top floor that has nothing but UCSD swag (everything from pencils to shirts to home decor), it's a pretty cool place to shop. I am going to try and repair the poor Yelp rating for this vilified UC Bookstore. I am grateful to them for employing my teen son this summer. That alone is worth 5 Stars to me! However, I remember being shocked at some of the textbook prices here when I was a student in another era. But daddy was paying for that obscure European press text on Hitler's War Machine so I just grinned and bear-ed it. Now I can say that it is a very professionally run and complete Bookstore and so much more. Books of every make and model-both for UC classes, extension courses and general edification of the brain. An impressive array or computers and lap tops for sale. A section of medical scrubs and clothing for the UCSD Medical School students-and those of us who wish to be Doctors or Nurses for Halloween! The second floor of the Bookstore is Merchandise Central! A great clothing department filled with UCSD hats, hoodies, and T-shirts to impress the opposite sex with the size of your....cerebral cortex! The gift shop and school supplies are here also. The Bookstore offers free delivery to many locations and a re-chargable gift card that allows generous patrons and family members to help pay for those 10 lb. REQUIRED textbooks! Employee offices, break rooms and such cover the 3rd floor. Here is another personal reason I would like to try and rectify the Yelp rating of UCSD Bookstore. They offer small-press or self-published independent authors a small foothold in the door. You can request a Book-signing or other promotional activity during their Quarterly Events. Now this is crucial to me since I am in the process of writing a book that I hope will Change-The_World! I hope to use my connections- my son's employment status and my alumni credentials to solicit my transformation OEUVRE here on campus! So I do hope that the many reading these words will OVERLOOK the high price of textbooks, the dire lack of convenient parking, the smart Asians who are always in the classes you need to graduate and affect the grade curve! Also the fact that there really aren't many HOT guys and girls here because mostly smart people don't care about their looks that much. I have never been accused of shop-lifting mainly because one of the 10 COMMANDMENTS is Not to steal and I would be afraid of dis-pleasing God- and not so much the undercover security guards! Pretty good for a university bookstore! I remember when I was still a student here I would buy the planner because there was always coupons for I think 25% off an item each month! I checked and they still have that promo! I came back to campus recently to buy a license plate holder. Make sure you check all your options. I wanted a chrome license plate for alumni and there's one that says" Alumni- University of California San Diego" and it's $40, there's a cheaper one that says "UCSD-Alumni" for only $12. It's so similar, they're both silver but I think just different material. I love how they always had Hello Kitty stuff here LOL Their UCSD gear is pretty cool too! Aside from your average college tees and sweatshirts they have legit apparel for men and women similar to the style you would find at Hollister except they have the UCSD logo on them. They have awesome alumni stuff here. Always clothes on clearance. I remember I bought my diploma frame here years ago it's originally around $300 because it has the Geisel Lithograph, I bought it during a grad night event and it was on sale that night for around $150! read more

Three stars because it's a nice place to relax, since there's numerous seats throughout the bookstore. Textbooks, school supplies, even miscellaneous items are overpriced. If you have time, find books and other materials online via Amazon, ebay, etc. Only purchase from the bookstore if you are short on time, or you cannot find what you need anywhere else. As for college gear, they have a great selection, as well as gear for each of the six colleges. Overall, I would just go here to browse and sleep on one of the soft couches. read more

Omg... I'm never ordering Amazon pick up here again. I will admit that I'm just upset because this is incredibly inconvenient because I don't even go here. I'm sure if I went to UCSD, this place would be a convenient godsend to all my Amazon needs by driving from SDSU to UCSD to get a package you desperately needed for the next day makes me wish I never ordered the thing in the first place. I almost was about to just be like "...screw it... I'm just going to cancel the order and ask for a refund" Parking is a pain and having the find the place is even more complicated. It's also deceiving that it's open on Sundays but part of the bookstore that is closed on Sundays. I encountered 2 signs pointing to the Amazon pick-up store but they hardly helped. UCSD Bookstore - Ugh - Bookstores Near Me - La Jolla, California

I used to think this place was alright. Until I got accused of shoplifting. Warning: profanity ahead. In case you're wondering, this occurred a little over two hours ago. What happened was the goddamn cashier didn't ring up everything I put on the fucking counter. I didn't notice. I signed the fuckin receipt and peaced out. Halfway across the parking lot, I'm caught up with by a pair of loss prevention bimbos asking to escort me back onto the premises for unlawful acquisition of merchandise. My thoughts: "EXCUSE FUCKIN ME?" My words: "Pardon?" It's not as though I was concealing anything. I walked out with the stupid shit in hand, thinking that everything had been billed to my credit company. I had spent damn near half an hour talking to one of the computer specialists (who, admittedly, was very helpful) trying to figure out which adapter to get in order to hook up my Macbook to a computer monitor I used to use for my PC. Why the hell would I invest myself in all that fuckin jazz if I weren't intending on purchasing? Much love to the tech specialists, but the unskilled bookstore staff can suck it. After realizing the mishap on my receipt, I offered to pay for the unaccounted for items. I should have demanded to receive them free for all the trouble they were causing me, but I didn't in order to avoid further conflict. All of this to no avail. They had nothing on me, and yet insisted on taking down my information. So I sat through a half hour of scanning several forms of ID, as well as all of the merchandise I presumed to have been paid for. I was then accompanied to customer service to purchase the items that weren't on my first receipt. Rude employees. A completely mortifying experience. In addition to the threat of receiving a fine in the mail for anything between 50 and 500 dollars. They can expect me back very soon... with some very interesting words to throw at management. I have never shoplifted, and have never been accused of shoplifting. I am shocked and appalled by the terrible treatment I received at this establishment, and they are never receiving my business again, whether it be for personal or work-related purchases. If I do not receive a full apology for all this shit, I will file a formal complaint of harassment. Uh, negative millions of stars (which represent the positive millions UC Regents makes). It looks like a mini Wal-Mart. Everything is overpriced (I only go there when my books are taking forever to come in from amazon), they have loss prevention snitches who follow you around and pretty much harass you. General Store Co-Op sells textbooks and UCSD merch (as well as Reef sandals!) at prices much much cheaper than the bookstore GUARANTEED! So if you're like me, tired of dishing out thousands and thousands to UC Regents and are pissed off about it, don't shop there. I like to hang out there and tell people that the co-ops are cheaper and then I get kicked out :( read more

Be careful to not get scammed. They place unnecessary notebooks in such a way that they seem to be required for the class.. Just wasted 97$ on a useless non refundable techniques manual when the only notebook really necessary was 9$. As if ucsd wasn't expensive enough. read more

Most items are overpriced, marked up due to the UCSD logo slapped on it. The alumni section is somewhat small, and often times I can't find clothes in my size. They say they will restock every week, but I checked back twice for some sweatpants and they still didn't have my size! The prices of used books are ridiculous because for a buy-back, I only got $2 for it. Then they go around and charge $10-$15 for it... Wow, it's like a sketchy pawnshop. However, their apple/Mac deals are nice. Apple products are pricier than PCs, but sometimes you will find apple deals cheaper than at the apple store. They're at a good location and there's plenty of seating. I liked that they have multiple entrances, but I miss having the sunshine store inside. ;/ read more

Every time I've shopped there I've found what I need (and more), dealt with friendly staff, and been pleasantly surprised by the merchandise and event offerings. I liked the bookstore back in my UCSD days! I always found myself meeting people here or walking through on my way to Price Center. They have decent sales and a whole bunch of merchandise. I got myself some sweats and a hoodie over my span here, and also purchased Triton gear for my parents so they could rep me back in the Bay! Yes stuff can be pricey, but you just need to be smart about it. Even during graduation I only purchased the stuff I "had to" and borrowed a gown from a friend. Buy books used please...or do what I did and don't buy them at all! I borrowed a lot from friends and used the ones they keep at the library! Use your heads little Tritons! read more

Maybe it's the shopaholic in me, but I could walk around this bookstore for hours. In all reality, I probably did browse the UCSD bookstore for hours, especially when I first transferred and didn't have any friends. The bookstore kept me entertained. I could try on sweaters and sweatpants with the UCSD logo, and pick out silly gifts for my parents - shirts with "UCSD Moms Rock!" imprinted on them, or bumper stickers that say "My child and money goes to UCSD." There's also a license plate frame they carry that really annoys me "UCSD - The Smart Ones." Smart in comparison to?? Just a tad arrogant, you think? They pretty much carry anything you could possibly want UCSD imprinted on, in addition to random gifts and trinkets. All overpriced, but you're paying for the logo. They have a computer center and, of course an actual bookstore, as well - leisurely reading and academic. They pretty much have it all. The bookstore has two floors, with the books and school merchandise on the bottom and gifts, etc on top. I always found the place very well organized and clean. There's a dressing room, customer service area, and plenty of cashiers. Mostly students work there. I haven't seen the bookstore after the recent expansion, but I'm sure it's even better. read more

Since it's a special item they don't keep it in stock but to keep it all a surprise I was able to ship to store. (This is a review of the technology/computer store.) Not keeping up with the times and how people buy technology these days. Most items are not in stock and have to be ordered, prices are often higher than Amazon or Best Buy, and the parking is atrocious. Lastly, they have a policy now that family members (with the same lastname and ID) cannot pickup items ordered by the Index account holder. They are pretty much doing everything they can to lose our business. We want to support the bookstore and school, but won't when it's a pain in the ass to do so. read more

The UCSD bookstore is vast, but finding the right textbook is pretty easy because the selection is pretty organized. But the cool thing about the UCSD bookstore is that you can buy a lot of groovy UCSD trinkets and trash, celebrity rags in addition the intellectual materials are a part of the course requirements. The UCSD Bookstore also sells a large selection of athletic clothes with the UCSD emblems embroidered on them. Terrible customer service. They lied about return policy and also were very rude and not helpful in the slightest. They really don't care about customer service or leaving their customers happy. If they make a mistake they don't really care or own up to it, or make exceptions at all. They just lack care. That's the best way I can put it is that they just do not care. read more

I came in here today to return textbooks as I had discovered that I would not need them for most of the class based on the structure. Checking the website I saw that books had a 14 day return policy. Little did I know there was a separate policy for TEXTBOOKS. The system was really loosely ascertained after discovering that it can be returned up to a month later if you drop or are waitlisted in a class and can't get in. It seems obtuse to have an early return date on textbooks when students aren't necessarily locked into their classes until 2 weeks later. Never mind that, who am I to talk about a years old system that doesn't make sense and hopes to trap students who can't afford textbooks anyway? As far as my situation goes, a very nice representative informed me of the differing policies, but said she could ask presumably a textbook supervisor what could be done. She left to go talk to the appropriate person and came back saying the supervisor had rejected my return. I asked if I could personally talk to her as 1. I didn't want her to have to go back and forth and 2. I would've preferred to have a conversation about the policy to see if the supervisor could hear out my particular case. I'm a student on a full ride scholarship and can not afford to just forget about about almost $100 in textbooks that I don't need. This supervisor lady comes out to talk to me and is already annoyed. I'm not sure if she had a bad day or what but self management is key when you're talking to someone you've just met. She just repeats that the deadline was 2 days ago and that's that. I mentioned how I was following the policy for the 14 days and that it seemed deliberately confusing. This is where it gets ridiculous. She just says that this is the policy they've had for years and I'll just have to eat the $75+ dollars. I say it seems to not even make sense in accordance with the school add/drop class deadline, and she just keeps mentioning how she's rejecting the return. At this point, I'm feeling like she was annoyed with this exchange from the get go and is being obtuse. I say something like "this is an honest mistake and I own up to that, but you're not being very accommodating". A switch flips and she starts accusing me of bullying her to get what I want. Absolutely confused, I say "no one is trying to bully you why are you saying that?" At this point she keeps mentioning how I'm telling her how to do her job and bullying her and getting unwarrantedly flustered almost as if she was trying to cause a scene to make herself a victim. I say "ok can you calm down I'm just trying to have a normal conversation with you. Do you have an issue with me?"(context: I was more referring to whether or not she had an issue with the color of my skin) she still upset as hell and asks someone else to just decide to make an exception or not. I tell her thank you and that there's no need to be belligerent. She grabs some books and storms off mumbling "how are YOU gonna tell ME I'm not accommodating" and various other things. I wouldn't be surprised if she was insulting me under her breath. I couldn't help but feel as though she was trying to bait me into getting aggressive. I am a black woman and she was a white woman and though I don't want to believe there was racial animosity present, she was so quick to assert that I was being aggressive and felt so insulted that I would mention her lack of accommodation almost in a condescending "you have no right nor credentials to tell me how to do my job" way. I understand people have bad days but her behavior was completely unwarranted and inappropriate. UCSD if you have staff that are racially or otherwise just generally insensitive I would recommend some more sensitivity training or to cut ties. That was a frustrating and honestly humiliating exchange, and I was in shock and near tears after feeling discriminated against. I've never had someone so forwardly assert that I was aggressive and threatening before anything even happened. I ended up getting the return done from another helpful supervisor and told for future reference textbooks are returned at a different date. That's ok with me. I'll be sure neither me nor any of my friends shop at the bookstore again. read more

I always avoid this place because of the overpriced items, but one time I absolutely had to go there to purchase poster paint (forgot why). While I was there, I figured I should see if they carried a used textbook I needed. I went up to an employee to ask her if it was available. She rolled her eyes at me ( the conversation she was having with someone else was apparently was more interesting). She searched for the book I told her about, made a face, and told me, "Not here. Are you SURE you know what you're even looking for?" She told me this with such attitude, so I was trying really hard not to blow. Not all the employees are like this I'm quite sure of it, but this one irritating, rude lady (she did not look like a student, she seemed older) helped build up the opinion I have toward this place. read more

Scarily, it's already been about 12 years since I graduated from UCSD... and at least 5 years or so since I went back to visit. The campus has changed like crazy, including the bookstore here. Overall it's expanded quite a bit, giving some more actual choices for shirts/sweatshirts etc.... While I was going to school here I had a thing against buying gear for the school I was still going to, so FINALLY bought my first UCSD shirt today. :) For those of you who haven't swung by the campus for a while... check out the backside of the Price Center... It's AMAZING what they have in there now.... as well as what's coming in near Marshall.... I guess it's where 6th is now? While the Bookstore is overpriced you can get some good deals if you are staff, alumni, etc. on computers/software. The staff are always helpful and friendly if you are looking for something or need to special order anything. This summer we went looking for an iPad at the Apple Store in UTC, Best Buy and of course no one had any. I called the UCSD Bookstore just to see if they had any. Yes they did, and they had all 6 available! Very happy! read more

I absolutely love the UCSD Bookstore. I spend time there when I'm in town visiting and enjoy it all. Yes, I'm probably overpaying, but if you want UCSD Memorabilia you pay. No, I'm not a student, but the grandson I raised is, and I really love the bookstore and all the things I can get. Tomorrow I'm flying in for his 21st birthday and heading straight for the bookstore. Have already bought things for graduation and plan on buying more. I'm very proud that he was accepted to and is graduating in 3 yrs. from UCSD! I want as many things to remind each of us of the wonderful years he had there and all the graduate memorabilia I can get without going broke! 3.5 stars. I have been wanting to get an alumni sweater for the longest time. I think I waited about a year for the specific one I wanted. I snapped a photo of it on a visit to campus last year. I was in a rush so I couldn't flag down any of the employees. When I got back to NorCal I decided to email the bookstore to see if they would get any more shipments in of this particular sweater. They told me they were going to discontinue the style. I was pretty darn bummed. I'm a persistent person you see. Whenever I had a chance to go to the UCSD bookstore, I would check for it. When I really want something I put wayyyyy too much effort. Anyway. Last month, I talked to some of the workers there and they were nice enough to do an inventory check for me. They were pretty damn accurate with the date because when I called they got more inventory! Whoo-hoo! I placed my order over the phone with the staff member, but then she had to have the customer service department call me back to process my payment. Idk why she couldn't do it. Came to visit my Alma Mater & buy a UCSD sweatshirt. Timed our visit to avoid the crowds & traffic on campus. Late afternoon, Wednesday before Thanksgiving, found a parking spot near the bookstore! A miracle! The bookstore itself is a multi-story wonderland of science/nature books & related paraphernalia- not so much in the fiction department. The staff sitting behind the counter in the electronics department involved themselves in my personal life. As soon as I walked in to purchase some earbuds, the girl behind the counter said "Get out, we know". It came out of her face. I reprimanded then and they laughed to each other and ignored me as if nothing had been said. Nobody has the right to tell me what to do and my personal life is none of their concern. I wouldn't have noticed, but this situation has come up thousands and thousands of times: it utterly reaks of entitlement and it's totally unprofessional. If they got commission for a purchase I made a couple of weeks ago, I wish I could take it back. These people never treat you like shit before they make the sale. read more

Do not use this place for a amazon pickup or return!! Parking is a pain and having the find the place is even more complicated. It's also deceiving that it's open on Sundays but part of the bookstore that is closed on Sundays. I encountered 2 signs pointing to the Amazon pick-up store but they hardly helped.
