Having grown up in Jefferson Hills, I have been to Al's Cone Zone more times than I can remember…read more It is a classic, reasonably priced establishment that is beloved by locals and visitors alike. Al's is located on State Route 885 in Jefferson Hills, just to the right of the entrance to 885 Park and Baseball Fields. The building is a bright blue, and covered with fun paintings of ice cream and other items they sell. So, you definitely will not miss it. It is a seasonal operation that usually runs from sometime in March to sometime in October. There is a ton of parking here. You will find some spots in front of the windows. Due to no fault of Al's, I personally find these a little difficult to get in and out of, just with the nature of 885 as a road. To the right of the building, there is a large parking lot, with spaces much easier to get in and out of. Al's purchased this parcel a few years ago, and made it into an expanded lot. There is a walkway leading to the building right from this lot. This visit in particular was this past September. I was in the area eating dinner, so I decided to stop by Al's for dessert on the way back. I arrived around 8:50 PM, and they closed at 9:00, so naturally there was not much of a wait at this time. The store is a classic outdoor ice cream stand. Meaning that you walk up and order at the windows, and there is no indoor seating. However, there are plenty of benches and picnic tables on either side of the building. Depending on the time of day that you visit, these might be full, so next best thing would be to tailgate at your car! I have tried a large amount of the menu here over the years, and there are a lot of great items. The Tornadoes are huge, and there are so many toppings available to mix in. Cones and dishes are gigantic, regardless of the size. I like the Ice Cream Sandwiches, particularly the ones with either the Chocolate Chip Cookie or the Peanut Butter Cookie. Milkshakes are tasty as well. In the fall, they will have Pumpkin Ice Cream, and tend to have other specials throughout the spring and summer. I have personally never tried the food items, but I imagine they are good! On this visit, I kept it rather simple with a Small Vanilla Cake Cone with Cherry Dip. As I said, the cones are very generous, so I normally stick to a small size. This one was a little porous and uniquely shaped, but that does not matter so long as it tastes good. It definitely did! The person who waited on me was friendly and quick. I understand it can be annoying to have customers so close to closing time, but I appreciated their demeanor and service on this day. The value here is pretty great. Most of the items are soft-serve, so naturally it will be less than hand-scooped ice cream. My cone was under $5, and that included getting the add-on of dip. Al's has always been a crazy good value, and I believe they still are. In the past few years, they also started to take cards. So, no reason not to stop by! Some bonus aspects of Al's are that they will give you a free Pup Cup with your purchase. My dog loves ice cream, so I take advantage of this often. Also, they offer a Punch Card if you ask for one when placing your order. So, if you buy 10 items, you will get one free once you present the card. I have always been a fan of Al's, and now try to stop by whenever I can. I do not live as close anymore, but it is still worth it to come by every once in a while for some delicious treats. The owner is very kind, as well as all of the staff. The product is good, and there really is something for everyone here. Plus, the atmosphere and overall value really bring it over the top. If you find yourself in the Jefferson Hills/Clairton/West Mifflin area anytime soon, make sure to stop by Al's!

We also appreciated the outdoor seating, which made it a nice spot to enjoy our treats on a beautiful day. The only things we would love to see are a few more Dole Whip flavor options. I loved reading about the…read morehistory of the business and looking through all of the vintage advertisements and memorabilia outside the shop. My first thought after visiting was that I should have come here sooner, and my second thought was already deciding what I want to order next time. I am already planning to order the peanut butter soft serve with warm fudge and a warm cookie after being inspired by their chocolate chip cookie sundae advertisement and will need to ask about what the strawberry shortcake situation is all about as well. For years, I watched the long lines outside and wondered what all the hype was about. Sometimes you don't get it until you "get it" - and now I get it. Fortunately for us, there was barely any line when we arrived even though it was a hot summer day. Even better, it's only about a one-hour walk from my house. The service was also fast and friendly and the employee who helped us was pleasant the whole time which added to the overall experience. I was especially impressed by the peanut butter soft serve. The flavor was rich and pronounced without compromising the smooth, creamy texture of the soft serve. It was everything I would want peanut butter soft serve ice cream to be. I was also surprised by how many soft-serve flavors they offer. Most places have only a few options, but there was plenty to choose from here. That said, it's hard for me to order anything other than the peanut butter soft serve now that I know how much I love it. One thing to know is that they do not offer free samples because the flavors are made to order. Something else to know is that the small sized cone held noticeably more ice cream than the small cup despite being the same price - so if you can I suggest the cone over the cup if you want more ice cream for the same price. I originally chose the cup because my hands weren't clean, but I later realized the cones come with a plastic protector around them anyway. All in all, this is one of those places that lives up to its reputation, and I highly recommend coming here if you are an ice cream aficionado.

This factory offers a *tour* on certain Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Each tour lasts about 90 minutes and costs $25 per person. The tour includes seeing the factory's machines, tasting ingredients, and receiving a pint of ice cream. Through Millie's website, I purchased two tickets for a tour of the factory. On the day of the tour, my husband and I parked our vehicle in the free parking lot near the building. Inside the factory, the tour guide Quinn asked customers to sign a legal agreement and then gave us hairnets to wear. We started our tour on time. Quinn began the tour by telling the history of the business. Next, we walked through an antibacterial on the floor to clean the outsoles of our shoes. Quinn showed us a bottler machine, and they gave us samples of milk and chocolate milk to taste. This milk came from Twin Brook Dairy Company and was very rich. Quinn explained that Millie's is both a dairy processor and an ice cream manufacturer. Millie's creates ice creams completely from scratch and does not use any premade dairy bases. Then Quinn showed us machines that mix and cook ingredients. Common ingredients for Millie's ice creams are milk, heavy cream, egg yolk for French-style ice creams, salt, and cane sugar. Additional ingredients could include real vanilla, caramel sauce, coffee, beet root powder for color (no artificial colors), responsibly sourced chocolate, etcetera. Millie's pasteurizes these ingredients together, cooking them at approximately 165 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30-35 minutes. Quinn allowed the customers to smell and taste some of these ingredients. Next, Quinn showed us a machine that cools the ice creams and then a machine that is used to package the ice creams. They explained that the machines are cleaned with a hot acid flush and hot water. At the end of the tour, Quinn gave miniature cups of four ice creams-vanilla, best chocolate, coffee, and dairy-free mango--to each customer to taste-test. Then each customer got to select a pint of ice cream to take home.

And to be fair, they deserve to be popular. Still, waiting in a long line outside in the summer heat...it's no fun. BUT if I'm driving by and the line is short for a change, I'll take a detour and get myself a sweet treat. So, why's Antney's so popular? Because we all love a family-run ice cream shop. They serve homemade cones and a nice mix of (also homemade) ice cream scoops, milkshakes, sundaes, and even frozen yogurts and sorbets. Parts of the menu rotate regularly too (specifically, I've read that some flavors change daily). So while you can always expect to find the classics here, you never know what else awaits you. Case in point: I stopped by last week and to my delight, Nutella Cookie ice cream was on the menu! I ordered a milkshake version and let me tell you, it was the best milkshake I've had in quite a while. Absolutely delicious flavor, and full of cookie pieces to boot - it hit the spot on a hot summer afternoon. It's probably for the best that I don't want to regularly wait in a long line in a hot parking lot to get ice cream from Antney's. Well, it's good for my wallet and waistline at least - it's disappointing for my tastebuds. Hopefully though, I'll get lucky again before they close for the winter, and will once again drive by while the line is on the shorter side!
