Dell's is your local walk up ice cream joint. Me and some of my pals who just moved in nearby decided we were having a hankering for a tasty ice cream treat on a hot summer day. There were several people there, but were able to churn out the orders fairly quickly. yes- my turn to order! I ended up getting a turtle Arctic Swirl (think of a blizzard) while pals got a vanilla ice cream cone with sprinkles (classic but boring) and a fried Oreo sundae (what fun!) They both enjoyed theirs. Unfortunately, my turtle arctic blizzard came with hot caramel. Don't get me wrong, I love hot caramel, but it my arctic swirl ended up the consistency of soup, not even milkshake thickness. It tasted good, just wish I would've been warned beforehand. We didn't try any of their food offerings, but their fried apps sound nom nom. Will try it out again, but will get something different.

Their mint soft serve tasted like toothpaste. Understaffed and highly under-trained. Staff was friendly though.

Millie's Homemade LLC was founded in Pittsburgh in 2014. The business has several locations…read morethroughout the Pittsburgh area, and this address is for its factory. This factory offers a *tour* on certain Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Each tour lasts about 90 minutes and costs $25 per person. The tour includes seeing the factory's machines, tasting ingredients, and receiving a pint of ice cream. Through Millie's website, I purchased two tickets for a tour of the factory. On the day of the tour, my husband and I parked our vehicle in the free parking lot near the building. Inside the factory, the tour guide Quinn asked customers to sign a legal agreement and then gave us hairnets to wear. We started our tour on time. Quinn began the tour by telling the history of the business. Next, we walked through an antibacterial on the floor to clean the outsoles of our shoes. Quinn showed us a bottler machine, and they gave us samples of milk and chocolate milk to taste. This milk came from Twin Brook Dairy Company and was very rich. Quinn explained that Millie's is both a dairy processor and an ice cream manufacturer. Millie's creates ice creams completely from scratch and does not use any premade dairy bases. Then Quinn showed us machines that mix and cook ingredients. Common ingredients for Millie's ice creams are milk, heavy cream, egg yolk for French-style ice creams, salt, and cane sugar. Additional ingredients could include real vanilla, caramel sauce, coffee, beet root powder for color (no artificial colors), responsibly sourced chocolate, etcetera. Millie's pasteurizes these ingredients together, cooking them at approximately 165 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30-35 minutes. Quinn allowed the customers to smell and taste some of these ingredients. Next, Quinn showed us a machine that cools the ice creams and then a machine that is used to package the ice creams. They explained that the machines are cleaned with a hot acid flush and hot water. At the end of the tour, Quinn gave miniature cups of four ice creams-vanilla, best chocolate, coffee, and dairy-free mango--to each customer to taste-test. Then each customer got to select a pint of ice cream to take home.

I was having a real "Pittsburgh Proud" moment at this ice cream spot. I loved reading about the…read morehistory of the business and looking through all of the vintage advertisements and memorabilia outside the shop. My first thought after visiting was that I should have come here sooner, and my second thought was already deciding what I want to order next time. I am already planning to order the peanut butter soft serve with warm fudge and a warm cookie after being inspired by their chocolate chip cookie sundae advertisement and will need to ask about what the strawberry shortcake situation is all about as well. For years, I watched the long lines outside and wondered what all the hype was about. Sometimes you don't get it until you "get it" - and now I get it. Fortunately for us, there was barely any line when we arrived even though it was a hot summer day. Even better, it's only about a one-hour walk from my house. The service was also fast and friendly and the employee who helped us was pleasant the whole time which added to the overall experience. I was especially impressed by the peanut butter soft serve. The flavor was rich and pronounced without compromising the smooth, creamy texture of the soft serve. It was everything I would want peanut butter soft serve ice cream to be. I was also surprised by how many soft-serve flavors they offer. Most places have only a few options, but there was plenty to choose from here. That said, it's hard for me to order anything other than the peanut butter soft serve now that I know how much I love it. One thing to know is that they do not offer free samples because the flavors are made to order. Something else to know is that the small sized cone held noticeably more ice cream than the small cup despite being the same price - so if you can I suggest the cone over the cup if you want more ice cream for the same price. I originally chose the cup because my hands weren't clean, but I later realized the cones come with a plastic protector around them anyway. All in all, this is one of those places that lives up to its reputation, and I highly recommend coming here if you are an ice cream aficionado.

Several great spots I know carry these ice cream sandwiches (Pittsburgh Taco Boys, Burghers in Millvale, among numerous others. I tried my first Leona's sandwich from the Millvale restaurant). Some supermarkets carry them too, I think. I had their lemon meringue ice cream sandwich. Man, it's really good. The sandwich part is sturdy and holds all the great ice cream together. The ice cream is fresh and flavorful, and quite sweet. I just really enjoyed it. Yes, decently pricey but high quality, so I think it's worth it.

I decided to get the Antwerp with Nutella ice cream. It was just stellar. The waffles here are not the typical soggy grocery store ones. No, they are made in house and are liege waffles. Just really good and a really fair portion. When the two are paired together, it's just exquisite.
