Went to the mall yesterday and decided to stop by Ugly Dumpling to dine in. It was busy but not too busy because I was seated right away. I asked for a booth because I had a few bags, they had one available near the back. I sat at table 77. I was close to the bathroom (not too close where you can see who is in and out). I was able to leave my shopping bags (covered under my coat) to rush the bathroom. It's visible to others would have been aware if I got jacked lol. I ordered a Diet Pepsi with lemon. Sipped on that for awhile and decided to order the Braised Beef Noodle Soup. It was REALLY good. I added some chili oil (already on the tables). I ordered to go the cheesecake with fortune cookies. When i arrived home I realized the fortune cookies were on the side so I smashed them up into crumbles and put on top of the cheesecake. I enjoyed that. This is more of a 3.5 star review. I've been to Ugly Dumpling twice now and I keep forgetting to take pics (sorry). Anyway, it's nothing to write home about honestly. Service is a lot to be desired. The staff could be more personable and warm, but the food comes out super quick (almost as if it's cooked in batches). Thing is, the food comes out before the drinks and this occurred on both occasions. They take the drink and food orders simultaneously and the drinks (mango green tea) take entirely too long. While flavorful, the food here is extremely salty. I've had the pork bao buns (the least salty thing I've tried), shrimp fried rice, and garlic string beans. The buns are ok; I've had much better elsewhere. The string beans and shrimp fried rice are very good but, the SALTTTTT. I actually had to send my rice back my second visit and asked them to recook it with less salt. Once it came back, it was actually perfect and my bestie agreed. The peach green tea is really good and the mango green tea, while almost too sweet, is great too. Nothing a lil ice can't fix. Hospitality in restaurants and bars hinges on professionalism, courtesy, and customer service. When bartenders and barristers forget professionalism, customers don't tip, and stop coming to the establishment. I was in this Bay Plaza location watching the San Antonio Spurs v. OKC basketball game, on Saturday, May 30, 2026, and the Barrister named "Sam" tells Bartender "Angie" she is leaving at 10pm in front of me. Bartender Angie responds saying she is leaving as well. The store closes at 10:30pm, so there was no need to have this conversation infront of me, a paying customer. The basketball game was going to end around 10:30pm anyway, and I was still paying for food and beers. I ignored the comment until Barista Sam said she was leaving again around 9:45pm. Bartender Angie then says she is turning off the TVs and taking the staff with her. THIS COMMENT WAS RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL TO ME AS A CUSTOMER. At this point, I asked for manager named "Shelly" if I was ok to stay until 10:30 when the game ended and she agreed. Again, at approximately 9:50pm, Barista Sam and Angie went on and on about leaving at 10. Barista Sam went further to say, "You do what you want , but me and Angie are out." THIS COMMENT WAS ALSO RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL. Finally, upon leaving, Bartender Angie made sure she closed my check so she could get her money, not before she made the comment, "He can sit here I am closing the check." She subsequently began to sweep and mop around my chair, banging the chair while doing so. Under the law Article 81 of the NYC Health Code and New York Codes (NYCRR) N.Y. Comp. Codes R. & Regs. Tit. 10 §§ 14-1.172, actively mopping or kicking up dust around active diners is considered highly unsanitary and is a potential code violation if it contaminates food or drinks. I was still at the bar dining. Both departed without a "good night" or "thank you" salutation, which is something I never experienced in hospitality Angie and Sam are not the Managers, not the GM, or the owners. Angie and Sam are unprofessional. Their behavior in larger hospitality organizations is terminable and would not be tolerated. I worked in a large hotel for 8 years and if a manager heard the bar or barrister staff behaving that way, they would be terminated immediately. I am very disappointed as I felt bullied, rushed, hurried, and uncomfortable by these two employees. Their attitudes and words have no place in hospitality. We were in co-op city looking for places to eat on a weekend! We had no luck in many and the wait was long. Luckily this place was spacious and it had plenty of tables available. We sat and ordered the sampler dumpling. The appetizer came fast. We were supper hungry so we appreciated the speed. I ordered the beef dish which was delicious. My partner also enjoyed his ramen. While walking around the Bay plaza Mall, we noticed this restaurant and since I'm always craving Chinese food, I was immediately game. Food: 3.5/5 We decided to go big and ordered four dishes to start: * Beef noodle soup * Sesame noodles * Pork & shrimp spicy wontons (no soup) * Pork soup dumplings The sesame noodles were the biggest surprise of the night. The portion was massive (almost the size of the beef noodle soup), super flavorful, and only around $8, which honestly felt like a steal. I would 100% order this again. My husband loved the beef noodle soup. The portion was generous, with plenty of noodles and lots of beef tendon. If you're someone who enjoys tendon, this is a solid. The spicy wontons were... fine. I won't lie -- they were pretty mid. When I hear "spicy" in Chinese food, I'm expecting more Sichuan-style heat, but this was very mild, more like light chili oil. Definitely not for anyone looking for real spicy/辣的菜. The soup dumplings weren't bad either. I've had better in Flushing and Elmhurst, but these were decent. I did find them a little salty, and the wrapper was thicker than I usually prefer, but overall still enjoyable. We also added the beef stir-fried noodles at the last minute to try another noodle option, and honestly... I really didn't like them. They were extremely oily and smelled a little off. I couldn't finish them. That said, our server (Shenxing) was incredibly kind and offered to replace the dish, but we were already too full to swap it. Service & Vibe:5/5 Service was genuinely great. We were seated immediately despite how busy it was, and our server was attentive and thoughtful, especially with offering to exchange the dish we didn't like. The vibe is casual, busy, and family-friendly. You could tell this place is popular with families and younger people who want a solid meal without spending a ton. Being inside the mall also makes it super convenient. All in all, our bill before tip was around $70 for five dishes and two teas, which honestly shocked me in the best way. Ain't nothing ugly about the Ugly Dumpling inside the Bay Plaza Mall! This restaurant is clean, modern, great for dining in, or enjoying a drink and sports game at the fully loaded bar. We went on a Saturday afternoon and the place wasn't full at all. We had no problems getting a table and our waiter was so informative, accommodating, and very attentive; also really cute :) He took the time to explain the menu, described the ingredients in each dish, checked in for any potential allergies, and advised on the spice level of all items ordered. We had the Soy Garlic Wings 10/10 (crispy + tasty), Pork + Shrimp Wonton Dumplings 10/10 (tasty + not too spicy), Braised Beef Noodle Soup 8/10 (delicious + the beef was fall of the bone tender/I think I was just expecting a more miso broth than a ginger one but still really good), Pork Fried Rice 10/10 (delicious + didn't even need soy sauce). Today, I had the pleasure of dining with my mom for lunch. I ordered the fried chicken dumplings and the pork chop fried rice which were delicious, and the dumplings sampler provided a delightful assortment. My mom decided on the shrimp and noodles, accompanied by the wonton soup. I was able to taste the shrimp and noodle dish, which proved to be equally delicious. While one of the dumplings in the sampler was notably spicy, the others were enjoyable. Wow, the food in this place is marvelous. Me and my boyfriend got the soup dumplings (I got the chicken and he got the pork), braised beef noodle soup and the cucumber salad. Everything was so delicious. I was very surprised at the cucumber salad. It's really hard to make it savory enough without the overpowering taste of garlic/ginger. But Ugly Dumpling got it right. The ambiance is really nice. There's dim sum plates all over the restaurant as decor. It really gave a nice Asian feel to the place. The color scheme is also neutral so it's really nice to photograph. They also have an area in the restaurant where you can see the chefs making the dumplings behind the glass. The service was pretty solid. It is a new restaurant so the workers are still learning. Our waitress was really friendly. I would just take one star off for the wait. We waited a whole hour for a table for 2. When we sat down, we saw probably more than half of the restaurants' tables still empty. So I'm unsure why there is a huge wait when tables are empty. A lot of people were also walking out because apparently the wait time had gone up to 3 hours. I would recommend going when the hype dies down. The place looks great, modern, clean, and full of energy. They don't take reservations, so when you arrive, they greet you and add you to a waitlist. When we went, the wait was quoted at 1 hour and 50 minutes, but I know places usually overestimate so I agreed to be added to the list. They take your number and send you a text when your table's ready. You've got about 10 minutes to return once you get the notification. I love this feature because it gives you time to stroll around the mall while you wait but we opted to just wait at the seating area at the restaurant. As expected, we got the text after just an hour, 50 minutes ahead of the quoted time.  Once we were seated, it took a little time before someone came over (and I'm blaming that on them being so new), but after we placed our order, the food came out super fast. Honestly, that saved the experience so major points for that! The staff really stepped up to the plate to rectify the issue. Shout out to the servers, Demaris and Gabby! I hope I'm spelling these correctly, but they deserve recognition for their level of hospitality. There's also this cool glass window where you can watch the staff (mostly older Asian ladies) hand-roll and fill dumplings. Watching them work was mesmerizing and made the food feel even more authentic. What We Ordered: Pork & Shrimp Wonton Soup Spicy Chicken Wontons Pork Soup Dumplings Orange Chicken Bao Buns Pork Cutlet Fried Rice Top tier were the Pork Cutlet Fried Rice and the Spicy Chicken Wontons. Close second were the Soup Dumplings and the Wonton Soup they were warm, comforting, and packed with umami. The only thing I wouldn't reorder is the Bao Buns, the orange chicken was made with dark meat, and I personally prefer white meat. Side Note:  The soup dumplings seriously remind me of Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown. That's high praise because those are the best I've ever had and Ugly Dumpling can compete. Because of its location right in Bay Plaza Mall and the constant foot traffic, I expect there will always be a bit of a wait. But once the staff is fully trained and they're able to use the entire space, I'm hoping that line moves much faster. This review is long over due lol. We came here the week of it's opening. Mom, sis and I. We ordered a variety of items to try. We did the Soup Dumpling Sampler, Braised Baby Back Ribs, Braised Beef Noodle Soup and Fried Calamari. The sauces at the table really helped add flavor to the soup. The soup dumpling sampler was my favorite. It came with 6 different dumplings and they were all delicious (except thw really hot one lol) (Szechuan Pork). My favorite one was the Pork &Truffle. I'm not really a calamari person but these ones were nice and crispy, didn't even need any sauce. I didn't really like the braised ribs, they tasted more burnt to me then anything. The place looks and fewls very peaceful, nice lighting and they well also give you a tour to see how the dumplings are made. The service is also what will get me to come back. Really well thought-out space. Really nice and simple ambiance. Clean and easy to move through. Menu has many dumpling options and we loved what we got. The rice was absolutely phenomenal. Doesn't look like much since its not coated in soy sauce, but it turned out to be my favorite of all. Very seasoned and authentic. The porkchop was basic and simply fried. We soaked it in sauces to add flavors. All of the dumplings were really good, well done, very authentic. The garlic string beans were definitely worth the price tag of $13 because holy moly I could eat 3 orders and be satiated all day. The service was phenomenal. Everyone kind, warm, pleasant and accommodating. The service was fast and well explained that the food comes out as made, not as ordered. I felt that was important to explain to customers. This is more like gentrified dumplings/American Asian restaurant. We had the spicy wontons, which were not spicy and definitely did not have the mouth numbing tingle you get from Szechuan peppercorns. They were soft and had a lot of filling, but lacked flavor. Also ordered the shrimp fried rice. Skip this all together. Asian style fried rice is one of my favorites because of how much flavor is packed into simple ingredients. This was not that. This was white rice with eggs, scallions, and shrimp. No flavor.,had to douse in soy sauce and chili oil to eat it. Also ordered the soup dumpling sampler which I was already suspicious about but decided to try because why not give it a chance. Probably the lest soupy of soup dumplings I've had. They come in nice colors, but it's all about the flavor. They brought ginger but no vinegar-soy sauce mixture. So they were especially bland. It was hard to distinguish the different flavors because they all tasted so similar, except for black truffle which has a truffle flavor profile. The service was sub par. She did not bring waters to the table, we asked twice. Then the kitchen messed up the smaller dumpling order so they had to take it back. They dropped the fried rice at the table before the wontons even though the wontons were an appetizer and rice was an entree. And they used ramen spoons instead of dumpling spoons so it was kind of awkward to eat. It was fairly busy and many folks were ordering some American Chinese dishes like sweet and sour chicken or fried rice. It was fairly priced. For two entrees and one app we paid $40, $50 with tip. And there were nice holiday decorations up. However, just based on authenticity I would not visit again. The garlic wing sauce was so good we skipped the weird thick soy sauce that came with the dumplings and used the garlic sauce instead. Best move of the night. Then we had the pork chop with rice and a veggie noodle stir fry. Everything tasted great. Rice could've had a little more flavor, but honestly no real complaints on the food. Noodles tasted fresh and flavorful. Drinks were solid too. We had the honey lemonade and another one I can't remember the name of - floral, really nice. The big issue: they don't have their liquor license yet. That's not mentioned at the door, not on the menu in any clear way, and not in the long speech the server gives you about boba and how drinks work there. We specifically wanted to booze up our drinks like the menu suggests and only found out we couldn't after asking. That should be made clear up front. Service is where it really fell apart. We waited close to half an hour just to get water. Asked our server multiple times, but she kept taking other tables' orders and chatting with staff. I eventually had to get up, walk across the restaurant, and interrupt her conversation because we still had no drinks, no water, no utensils (my wife asked for a fork), and our food was already getting cold. Other tables were getting water while we sat there with nothing for a good chunk of the meal. We didn't get water until after our entrées were already on the table. Atmosphere was chill - not too loud, plenty of space in the dining area, and the bathrooms were clean. So the place has a lot going for it: food, drinks (minus the liquor situation), and vibe are all on point. If they can get the service together and be upfront about the no-liquor situation, this spot could be an easy favorite. I discovered a new restaurant called Ugly Dumpling on Instagram. Its unique name and local location quickly caught my attention, so I decided to check it out. Upon arrival, the restaurant immediately stood out -- it's large, modern, and appealing from the outside. As soon as I stepped in, I was greeted by a few friendly ladies at the counter, which also serves as the pickup area for takeout orders and the hostess station. A young hostess, who looked like a mini version of Ice Spice, was especially warm and welcoming. She added our name to the waitlist and explained that we'd receive a text in about 30-40 minutes. The wait wasn't bad at all since there's a nearby mall to explore and pass the time. When we returned, we were warmly greeted by another hostess and then seated by our server, Chantel, who was extremely kind and attentive. In fact, every staff member we encountered was lovely and contributed to a cheerful, upbeat atmosphere. However, I was a bit disappointed by the cleanliness of the dining area. For a restaurant open less than two weeks, I expected it to be spotless. The floors had some greasy spots that could've used a quick mop, and there were stray napkins, straw wrappers, and even small nip bottles on the ground. These details were noticeable as we walked past the glass windows on our way out to the mall and again when we returned. The drink selection was limited since they haven't obtained their liquor license yet, but that didn't bother us because we weren't there for cocktails that night. As for the food, we decided to sample a few different dishes: * Garlic Green Beans - Delicious! Cooked to perfection with plenty of flavor. A definite must-try if you want to sneak in some veggies. * Fried Pork Chop - Packed with flavor, moist, and had a great crunch. The only downside was that it was cut into inconveniently small pieces, but I'd still recommend it. * Soy Garlic Wings - Crispy, flavorful, and another dish I'd recommend. * Sampler Dumplings - This was a highlight. Six colorful dumplings, each representing a different flavor, served on a beautifully presented platter. Highly recommend. * Shrimp & Pork Shumai - Unfortunately, this was the one dish I didn't enjoy. The shumai were large but overly dense and tasted mostly of pork. They felt heavy, and I only managed to eat one. For drinks, I had the Honey Lemonade, which was refreshing, and the Passionfruit Iced Tea, which had just the right hint of passionfruit -- both were enjoyable. Overall, Ugly Dumpling has a great look, a spacious dining area, friendly and attentive staff, and quick service. The food was mostly excellent, though the cleanliness of the dining area left much to be desired. Cleanliness is important because it's hard to fully enjoy a meal if the surroundings feel neglected -- it also raises concerns about the kitchen's upkeep. My experience at Ugly Dumpling was extremely disappointing from start to finish. I was first told the wait would be 5 minutes, which later changed to 15 minutes. Not a major issue, but unfortunately it set the tone for what followed. Once seated, my entrée arrived before my appetizer, and my side of broccoli never came out at all. I informed the waitress, who said she would check on it, but no update was ever given. A few minutes later, the manager, DeShawn, stopped by and we explained the situation. He discovered that the missing items had never been entered into the system. While the waitress apologized, the manager offered no apology or acknowledgment, which I found very unprofessional. On top of this, the chicken fried rice was extremely disappointing -- lacking flavor, and honestly not enjoyable to eat. read more

I've come to this location multiple times with my partner since it's opened and have never had an experience like this. We came in were seated and off the bat we could tell our waiters vibe was off. She didn't offer us no water and when we gave our order we always get passionfruit teas and they're always bright yellow this time the drink was brown and we were confused but left it alone. Then we ordered our appetizer and asked what the kung pao chicken was but we said to give us more time to order the main. We went to the bathroom and when we came back the Kung pao chicken was on the table we were confused about it but still tried it because we felt bad. A waiter came to our table with chicken fried rice and we sent it back because we ordered Vegetable fried rice. After so we asked the manager if we could change the chicken for orange chicken or anything else she said no because she had already changed our rice order? To vegetable and we explained to her that we never ordered chicken fried rice. We explained to her that we never ordered the chicken to begin with. She had a tone and finally took it back. We asked for orange chicken. As we waited we never got our orange chicken or a side sauce that we ordered. Our waiter was no where to be found and wouldn't check up on us at all but would check up on tables next to us and behind us. We were so uncomfortable because how could OUR waiter just leave us stranded like that? Then my partner called for her and was completely ignored. This by far was the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant. I had to ask another waiter for the check and when our original waiter came she gave us the machine with the bill and left. Then we had to ask another waiter for To go boxes because our waiter was again no where to be found. We didn't even get a desert menu or anything it felt like they were just trying to get rid of us. Then after we paid, our original waiter came by and half apologized for putting in the order for the chicken when we never asked for it.
