Stopped at Ugly Dumpling on way back home to CT from Key West and really enjoyed it. The ambiance is casual Asian dumpling house like many that I have visited on my travels. Servers were very friendly and helpful. I started with a hot and sour soup, then had 6 pork, shrimp & spinach soup dumplings and 6 Szechuan soup dumplings. Soup had a nice rich flavor. Dumplings were not the prettiest I've had, but the flavor was very good. I ended the meal with an order of steamed BBQ pork buns. They were ok, but they need to increase the amount of pork in the bun. Seemed more like frozen buns than in-house. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and would love to have one of these restaurants in CT. On today's episode of eating my way through restaurants around the University of Delaware (while taking my college senior daughter to lunch), we landed at The Ugly Dumpling. We kicked things off with edamame - simple and exactly what you'd expect (hard to mess that up). From there, we shared the chicken soup dumplings, which were loaded with broth and seasoned chicken. I always wonder how they manage to make those, but that's a mystery for another day. The vegetable spring rolls came out hot and crispy. They could've used more filling, but the thin wrapper made them extra crunchy, which I liked. Surprisingly, the star of the show wasn't the dumplings - it was the fried rice. Something about it just kept me going back for more. I'm usually not big on rice, but even my daughter said it was, in her words, "obnoxiously good." We also tried bubble tea (my daughter ordered it for me), and it was my first time having one with a fruity flavor inside the boba - "slamming" is the only way to describe it. Service-wise, the staff and hostess were polite and attentive throughout. Overall, I'd give The Ugly Dumpling a strong 4 out of 5. My friends and I went to Ugly Dumpling to celebrate my early birthday :) We had Luke as our server, and he was hilarious and very helpful when we were debating our dishes (confirmed the soy garlic wings I wanted to get would be amazing and they were!). My two friends are vegan and they were happy to try out the vegan options (dumplings, wonton soup and green beans. They enjoyed all their dishes. Me and my other friend (non-vegans) ordered the soy garlic wings (best wings I've had in a long time!) which were perfectly crispy with a delicious sauce that I drizzled over my fried rice later. We also got the 6 soup dumpling special that was fun (just wish there was more broth in the soup dumplings for some of them but all have very good flavor). Then we also got the shrimp fried rice which was really good as well. We also got an assortment of drinks which were strong and delicious. I got the Lychee Berry Margarita which was refreshing. The restaurant is also beautifully decorated and clean. Glad I was able to try this place finally! 5/5 stars and I'll be back to try other dishes. read more

Most amazing food and service today at Ugly Dumpling in Newark, Delaware. This restaurant opened on the main ave of campus town of The University of Delaware about 2 months ago according to my brother who lives in the area. Our server told us they serve "Shanghai style" meaning all the food at once, so we decided to order a bunch and share. For our drinks, my brother, sister in law and husband ordered drinks but I opted for an iced green tea with passion fruit flavor and boba - SO GOOD! It was a huge drink with like 1/3 of it filled with boba. To eat, we have the dumpling sampler, edamame, bbq pork bao buns and two types of noodles - one being green tea noodles with a peanut sauce. I cannot say enough good things about ALL of the food. This place was a home run in my book! The service was quick, the food was top notch and the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing. I heard about Ugly Dumpling from a foodie friend of mine and had to check it out. Newark Main Street has a fairly diverse culinary landscape (though it needs a Korean restaurant) and Ugly Dumpling adds to the diversity. I've had soup dumplings from Philly and New York, so I have a pretty decent foundation of good soup dumpling. These are very good. You can see them making the dumplings in a 'lab' style room, I guess to show that they are made fresh daily. We arrived on a Saturday at 5:30. There were people waiting, but we were seated right away. The menu looks budget friendly. From my recollection, the Pork & Truffle Dumplings, Braised Beef Noodle Soup, and Pork Chop Fried Rice are the most expensive items on the menu ($14). Most dishes are $10-$12. We were here for the soup dumplings, so we ordered two Ugly Dumpling samplers, two Pork Dumplings, a Spicy Pork & Shrimp Wontons, String Beans w. Garlic Sauce, Vegetable Stir Fry Noodles, and a Hot & Sour Soup. Hot & Sour Soup-huge bowl of soup. Not the best I've had but I liked that it was shareable. A little chili oil and it was a good start. Wontons-another shareable appetizer. They went quickly. String Beans-I liked the crunch. My wife thought it was too salty. Stir Fry Noodles-too wet. Flavor was good for me. Again, my wife thought it was too salty. Dumplings-we ordered three orders of dumplings. Each one was good, though I've very content with the Pork Dumpling. Not super filling, so we ordered one more. When that one came out, we ate them freshly steamed, which was so much better! It may not be super efficient, but I'd order them one at a time, so the dumplings don't sit around too long. Careful, of course; the soup in the dumplings are hot. If you don't know how to eat soup dumplings, ask your server. Total bill-$76. My foodie friend said that the price will "sneak up on you." He was right. For a family of four (two pre-teen boys), that's a little high, and I and my wife could have eaten more. We enjoyed the eating experience, but will be better prepared for our next visit. Brand new place. There's going to be long waits for a long time, because it's amazing! We put our name down for a later time in evening and came back. Didn't have to wait very long once we returned. As of now, they don't have their liquor license yet. There is a bar. There are drinks on the menu..but they aren't there yet. Its quite nice inside, light wood throughout and the place is tremendous! The food came out very quickly as soon as each item was done, so that it came out as fresh as possible. We got Crab Ragoons as an appetizer and they were absolutely incredible! We also got the spicy Chicken Wontons, and Ugly Dumpling Xia Long Boa Sampler. The sampler was a great place to start. We also got the lemonade which was exceptionally good. There are lots of things on the menu and we are eager to try some different items very soon. They even had complimentary mouthwash in the bathroom. From the moment we walked into this spotless restaurant until the moment we left, our evening was perfect. Ugly Dumpling is spacious and bright with authentic decor and we were greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress was delightful and very knowledgeable about the menu, offering suggestions and insight on all of the items available. Our Chicken Soup Dumplings, Pork Chop Fried Rice and Orange Chicken with White Rice soon arrived and we have never enjoyed Chinese Food MORE! The Fried Pork Chop and Orange Chicken were light, flavorful and SO tender. The Fried Rice was fluffy and moist with perfect flavoring and no greasy residue. The Chicken Soup Dumplings were large, fluffy and tender with a burst of soup filling with each bite. We ended with the Chocolate Cookie Lava with Ice Cream, which was decadent. I ordered the wings, shrimp, pork and spinach soup dumplings and boba! It was all very good. Our server Deuce was funny and knowledgeable. Newark, especially Mean Street is really surprising. There is a lot of diverse food. And most of it is really good. This new spot fits in nicely. Really great soup dumplings and other dumplings. Nice vegetable dishes, good boba.. Really nice atmosphere and terrific service. You can even watch the kitchen make dumplings. This is apparently a chain, but who cares...they make great food. I highly recommend trying the spicy Szechuan Pork Soup Dumplings. That was the standout dish. That and the Spicy Cucumbers. read more

Hubby and I took two seats at the bar because it was a 40 minute wait for a table. Our bartender was very friendly and helpful. We tried a few things off the menu. Pork Dumplings, Orange Chicken, Spicy Pork and Shrimp Wontons and finally the Shrimp Fried Rice. All was yummy. The shrimp wontons were the best in my opinion- so light yet tasty with a bit of kick. Awful experience. We were greeted by sullen people at the reception and were then seated at table "84" which happens to be right at the end next to the restrooms . However worst was still to come. It took 25 minutes for a server to come to take our order and we were waiting for 30 minutes after we placed our order and we did not even get the starters. However the table in front of us who were seated about 5 minutes after us not only had their order taken before us but we're also served while we were still waiting for our starters to show up. We don't know what was wrong but it was clear that we were not welcome and we left. read more

THEY ARE MORE THAN RUDE!!! SERVICE IS VERY POOR! I came in with a cup of Starbucks and was fully willing to keep it out of sight under my seat. I made multiple compromises, remained calm, and was even more polite than the staff throughout the entire situation--yet I was met with hostility and rude treatment, as if I were on trial for a crime. The staff insisted that I take my coffee out of the restaurant, showing zero flexibility or basic courtesy. Several employees confronted me over this minor issue, creating unnecessary drama and making me feel like I was doing something terrible. It wasn't until a senior manager stepped in that things calmed down. Honestly, I don't think a hidden cup of coffee under the table is going to bankrupt your business--nor should it require multiple people to interrogate a customer. PLEASE TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS BETTER. Just went there with my wife that is in an arm sling after rotator cuff surgery. They went to seat us by the kitchen. It's not busy and I asked to be seated in a less high traffic area. Do I didn't need to worry about anyone bumping into her arm. The young lady said she needed to speak with her manager. She came back and to my surprise she came back and didn't say anything but "NO". Why wife asked why. She said something about double tables. At that point I shut down. And started walking out. The young lady grabbed the menus and walked back to her desk in a huff.
