My family loves this place! I tried it last time I was in town to visit and understand the hype now. They have a large menu and the fish is super fresh. We got take out, but I've been told that the restaurant has a great vibe. The nigiri and hand rolls were delicious, and I also tried the crispy rice. There is a manager there named Joanne, as someone who understands Mandarin the horrible things I have heard her say is atrocious. She speaks upon people in mandarin who would only understand English. Saying things like calling employees and customers fat, broke, and ugly. She also speaks to her employees and customers in terms like "stupid girl" etc. I would definitely say Harper Asian bistro's sushi is great food, but the management is beyond poor. The restaurant has a high class interior that immediately invited me to sit in and taste Japanese. But my family's tasting review was set on carry out Harper's Chinese food to compare to the best local Chinese selection. The net serving weights (around 700 g) were comparable to local restaurants but the over-all price was $15 too much and food had a lower quality taste. Chicken & Broccoli barely ranked a 3/5 and the others less than 3/5: Pork LoMein (some pork chewy), General Tso's Chicken mild (no crust, just orange sauce on thin crust chicken), Pork Fried Rice (Wok oil saturated the bottom of the fried rice carry-out). A nice touch: To prevent liquid sauce leaks, the carry out bag thoughtfully had individual plastic bags wrapped around the individual plastic leaky-carry out box entrees. read more

Friday night stopped by for dinner. Wanted to sit at the bar have a beverage and a bite to eat. Hmm no bartender? 5-10 wait staff eating meals and drinking soda behind the bar. Reminded me of a wait station! The young waitress took our order and did not know what Cabernet red wine was . She thought it was a brand ? I asked her if she tried the food? She said not yet . After three weeks of employment?? Prob should know the menu. Each wait staff was making their own drinks . Nice table clothes and decor, but a bunch of inexperienced wait staff. Third time there, not impressed. Service starts in the dinning room c plus at best. The food we did get was good. If you want to be a take out place then do so. If you want a nice bar and restaurant in Hockessin. Then hire a bartender to make the drinks for the wait staff and serve the bar. This placed failed to make the A list this weekend. Terrific service and attentive service with excellent decor. The staff was very accommodating to our large party and ensured we were well taken care of for the entirety of what became a long stay. We were passing through on the way to the gardens and found a menu, here, that each member of our party could enjoy. I'm giving a generous 2 stars only because my wife enjoyed her dumplings. I, on the other hand, had a somewhat bad experience with their sushi rolls. Let me mention too at this time they had no liquor license so we had it delivered. 1st - the 3 sushi rolls were big, and plentiful, but not tightly wrapped. This made it a little sloppy to eat since they were constantly falling apart. The somewhat expensive soft shell crap sushi roll seemed to have only legs and fins and was lacking meat. 2nd, and most important, I had about 6 leftover pieces . I immediately refrigerated them all eating them the next day in less than 24 hours. I was throwing up sick that night which puts me about 36 hours after the original order. I totally understand raw seafood. But if it was fresh when I bought it I would not expect to be sick the next night. read more

Visited this place for the second time. Friday evening very busy. Service was friendly , cocktails were good and the food was delicious. However, my entree was warm. It was a stir fry and when I mentioned it . I was told well we are very busy. Rather than take it back and throw it back on the stove for a min. I just finished it . :) Waitress was fine with that , but prob should have taken it back as I mentioned my dissatisfaction. Overall place is nice and fun place to meet friends for a good meal . We were looking for a new sushi place because our go-to took our favorites off the menu. We have been here a few times since it first opened. The first time, they did not have their liquor license yet and things took awhile, but the server thanked us for our patience as they were still working some things out. They have since received the liquor license, the staff is very friendly, and the sushi is creative and delicious. There are a lot of things we want to try on the menu. We were not fans of the shrimp shumai or vegetable dumplings, they had a weird taste and texture. But the pan-fried pork dumplings were on point, along with the kani kappa salad, mango crabmeat salad, and mango lobster roll. The server commented I must like mango as she brought me a tasty mango drink. I don't remember what it was called, but it was delicious! The pork pad thai was terrific but had way too much tofu which we do not like. It's a quiet restaurant with plenty of room at the bar. We will definitely be back. read more

The location has gotten a much-needed facelift since the other restaurant moved out of the space. The menu is comprehensive, and has something for almost anyone. The service is up to par, but not always the most friendly. Staff is helpful and attentive, just not as warm and friendly as many other spots. The ambiance is excellent, and balances modern style with that Chinese food store charm many of us are used to. I highly recommend checking them out if you are local. The place can take small or large groups without an issue--but don't be rude--make a reservation if you are bringing a large group. read more

I have to remove another star as lately the food has been decreasing in quality. I ordered dumplings and the edges were tough and inedible, like they were frozen and not steamed for long enough. The scallion pancakes were tough, and as well they forgot the rice for my mother's chicken. The listing photos for the food on Doordash are AI-generated, which I disagree with not only because it is AI, but because it is dishonest and gives an inaccurate impression of what the food that you're ordering actually looks like. Many of the sushi rolls have these garnishes, like roe or edible flowers or sprouts, that simply do not actually come with the dishes. Many of these photos also contain cherries as a garnish, which is just strange for sushi. As the art inside the actual restaraunt is AI generated, as well as the item descriptions, it just feels lazy. You couldn't take the time to take some photos of dishes before they went out? You couldn't write something about what makes your dish unique? You can't find art, even cheap mass-manufactured art, that complimented your restaraunt? It just shows a lack of regard or care, and it's insulting to the intelligence of consumers. There are many other asian restaraunts in the area that are less expensive and manage not to use AI. read more

We ordered a large takeout order for my 3 year old grandson's birthday last Friday. We were feeding four adults and two young children, ages 4 and 2. The shrimp pad thai was possibly the worst I've ever had. It was very spicy and lacked bean sprouts, scrambled eggs, cilantro and scallions - all are basic pad thai ingredients. Instead, we got a portion of undercooked noodles with some sort of red sauce that was way too spicy for my grandson to eat. We had ordered this pad thai when this restaurant had first opened, and it was delicious. I suspect they have a new chef. My husband ordered General Chows chicken, and again, it was overseasoned with jalapeño peppers. It was so hot that it was inedible, and he threw his dinner out. Finally, my son in law ordered sushi and had a portion of California rolls in his order, which we were going to give to our grandson to replace the ruined pad Thai. I tasted one roll, and realized that they had rolled the wasabi INSIDE the California rolls, making this yet another inedible item. Normally the wasabi is served alongside the sushi rolls. Restaurants serve young children and older adults. They need to remember that many people cannot eat overly spicy foods. I am not sure who is at the helm in the kitchen at this point, but there needs to be much closer tasting and supervision of dishes before they leave the kitchen. Three of the six dishes we ordered were inedible due to the large amount of pepper added to them. I did call and ask to speak to the manager yesterday rather than posting this review. He did not have the courtesy to call me back. Proceed with caution - this food was great when they first opened. Not any more. read more

We had an unfortunate experience today. The vegetarian meal is NOT vegetarian. I found a BONE in my meal that I clearly stated "Vegetarian meal". I could never be more insulted. We showed it to the waitress and they offered to comp the meal. It is disheartening to know that they are not careful in the kitchen for people with specific dietary needs. First, thank you to the owners of Harpers for opening this beautiful restaurant nearby. We have plenty of Asian spots in the area, but most don't quite hit the mark--Harpers does. We've been twice, and both times the service was good--quick, attentive, and smooth. The food ranges from very good to delicious. I've had the avocado boat twice and had to slow myself down--it's that good. My husband enjoyed the scallion pancake and beef dishes. I tried the seafood supreme on our first visit--perfectly cooked seafood, though the sauce was just okay. On our second visit, I had the veggie poke bowl, which was excellent--great tofu and lots of tasty, healthy toppings. I only wish the server had asked about rice options, as I would've preferred brown. The wine list is small but solid, with bottles around $30--pretty reasonable for the area. Overall, we're thrilled to have Harpers: great food, good service, and a beautiful atmosphere where I do not feel like I'm in Delaware. That's a good thing! read more

Wow! What an amazing transformation from the old, outdated "Crownery", who previously occupied this building. If you've been here in the past, you're in for an eye popping experience. Harper's has virtually gutted, redecorated & expanded the dining area (to that mysterious place hidden behind a curtain). We met the owner "Chon", he's a young family man with previous restaurant ownership experience. Very nice guy with high standards. The decor is modern, upscale looking, but very comfortable. They have a sushi bar & they still are waiting for their liquor license, but the bar is modern, a lot of glass shelving with soft but eye catching blue backlighting. Ok, the staff are friendly, patient, and very attentive. We all had something different, but everything we had on the table looked & tasted fresh, homemade & delicious. The food is a hit and a miss for some dishes. We ordered a variety of dishes from sushi to other entrees. HOWEVER, it is quite outrages to charge for a pot of tea by the cup. I have been to many Asian restaurants but this is the first time I've seen a restaurant charge for a pot of regular tea by the cup. Most places when you order tea charge you by the pot itself and just give you cups for the tea. If you are going to charge by the cup you need to inform the customer beforehand. So if you had a group of 5 or even 6 people come and order tea then the cost of tea will cost you the equivalent of an entree or more. read more
