So incredibly delicious! Visiting Vancouver, had just finished biking around Stanley Park and was intrigued by this spot as I had never tried Ukrainian food before. My partner and I ordered several dishes, and I was delighted by everything! The borsch was my favorite. The waitress was also very kind and helpful. Not fancy outside but very quaint inside and the food was very good. Service was direct and friendly. I enjoyed the Ukrainian Dinner which is big enough for 2 people to share. The sausage was flavourful, and the cabbage roll was stuff with meat and some rice. Also came with 6 perogies and you can select a variety, so I got onion, sauerkraut, and cheddar. My friend had the Chicken Paprika and she tough it was just ok. Next time she would get the cabbage roll and soup. Really good pierogis and cabbage rolls! Spouse also tried the borscht and liked it. We had one veg cabbage roll and one meat one, both very large and tasty. We split 21 pierogis between four of us with the appetizers and that was just enough - we probably could have upped the order of 9 to 12, for a total of 24. As for ambiance, it's exactly what you'd expect from a no frills farm house restaurant - we were seated right when we walked in and the restaurant had A/C which was great. We went around 6pm on a Saturday and it was practically full - most of whom seemed like regulars which is great to see. We opted to get 9 perogies each for just under $14. You can pick from 3 flavours: potato and cheese, potato and onion, and sauerkraut. They let you mix and match so I got 3 of each. This also came with sour cream and you can add on items like fried onions or bacon bits. The food came out fast and hit the spot! Perfect amount for a lunch or dinner and all three flavours were great. They also had lots of other menu items to choose from, including traditional cabbage rolls. The one waitress working the whole restaurant was also super attentive and friendly. Overall I'm a big fan and will recommend this spot for anyone looking for some Ukrainian food! read more

I've lived in the Westend for way too long to miss this place! Very small and cute place. I ordered take out and it was ready in 15 minutes. I ordered the Vegetarian Dinner (2 veg cabbage rolls - spinach, carrot, rice, celery; 6 pierogis - 2 of each flavor - potato and fried onions, potato and cheddar, and sauerkraut; coleslaw salad and sour cream). All this for $22.95! Thankfully I checked before leaving because they forgot the sour cream. So the cabbage rolls are stuffed! There was no sauce but the flavors were so great together. The pierogis were soft and fluffy. My least favorite was the sauerkraut but they were all so delicious. And the coleslaw is AMAZING! Such simple flavors but so complimentary. The service was also HUGE. I ate this for 2 meals and it was incredible the next day. A great place to check out! read more

I've ate at my share of places along Denman Street so I was surprised to discover that I've never seen Ukrainian Village before. It's located next to Holy Guacamole. The inside has more tables than you'd think. The waitress (aka. the only one working the front) did a great job. Dinner menu is split into soups, salads, appetizers, specialities, main dishes and desserts. Trip #1 We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 6:30pm). - Chicken soup ($6.95) - good but a tad small for the price. - Ukrainian dinner ($22.95) - this is the best way to sample everything. Cabbage rolls were excellent; essentially, meatloaf wrapped in cabbage. The meat was incredibly juicy. We tried all three perogy options (potato & cheddar cheese, potato & fried onion and sauerkraut). They're homemade with a thicker wrapper (which we liked) but the filling was a tad bland. It needed a dip into the sour cream. The Ukrainian sausage was satisfying and perfect to dip in the slightly spicy mustard. - Roasted duck ($18.45) - the apple is subtle; I could only taste it on the skin but the duck was a solid portion. The two dollops of mashed potatoes underneath were light and fluffy while the coleslaw, red beets and pickle rounded things off nicely. Trip #2 We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 7:00pm). - Vegetarian dinner ($20.95) - N was feeling the vegetarian option but if you're picking between the two, we preferred the Ukrainian dinner option. The cabbage rolls were healthy but missing a much needed sauce. Perogies hit the spot and again, you get three types. Side of coleslaw and a gherkin added some crunch. - Siberian pelmeny ($17.45) - everyone's first time trying pelmeny (Russian stuffed dumplings). Delicious! Filling was plump, texture had hearty bite and filled with all meat. Would definitely get these again. - Lamb shanks ($25.95 for 2 pieces) - the lamb shanks were a good size with plenty of meat. My favourite parts were from the bone itself. Happy to have found a homey Ukrainian/Russian spot! read more

Tried the stuffed cabbage (18 CAD for 2) and the Ukranian dinner (23 CAD, which was a lot of food). From my memory of Ukranian food circa 1989 it was similar in taste and texture as food from Ukraine. Overall the food was A-OK, the service was A-OK, and the ambiance was good. We' d been cycling nearly half the day at this point, and I said to my old companion: "I'll need to fuel up before we tackle the Stanley Park seawall". Tiny place seats less than 35. Clean nicely decorated. Memories of back 'home', Ukrainian / Russian themed. I hadn't been in for more than 25 years, but FOOD was GREAT back then. I ordered Dairy and Gluten free, no problem says server: Cabbage rolls, tomato based sauce, rice, fermented coleslaw pickle a HUGE plate for HONGRY travellin' man. Real deal authentic home cooked DELICIOUSNESS. I slowly worked my way through it, savoured each bite. My dining companion had a large fresh salad, again BIG generous portion executed well. Priced fairly for this area where real estate is SKY high. Not a lotta chat from lone server, but the food did the talkin', Twas as good as I remember 'back in the day'. Special when 'some things don't change' in this whirled we live in. Vancouver's transition in past 40 years is dramatic, from a village in the rainforest on the edge of the Pacific coast of Canada, to the megalopolis urban jungle of today. We were seated fast and this about the only positive side of this review. We came many times before and guessing maybe management has changed. We weren't really greeted, our waiter dropped menus at our table and gave us a sign where to sit. Waiter was short with no small talk. We ordered borsch was was extremely under salted. Waiter was out of sight, no water refills unless asked for. The place is so freakin hot it's like stepping into a sauna. Come on fix this!!! Above all this place needs help!!! Decided to finally try this place out after wondering for a long time. Eastern European places are fairly rare, and I have had some tasty food traveling in that region, so I was looking forward to this! First things first - the place has a rustic, cozy kind of feel that reminded me of visiting my grandparents, with flowers and paintings and carpet and wooden chairs, and I quite liked that. The portions are also huge - if you come here, even just for one main course, it seems impossible you'd leave hungry. Service was a bit slow, but there was clearly only one person working front of house on a busy night, so it must have been tough for them; I think they may just have been short staffed that day. But in the end, a lot of the food tasted rather plain. I had the beef stroganoff, which was fine but didn't taste like much; and I shared perogies, sausage, and herring with my friend, and all of those were okay but not great. The sausage skin was a bit tough, but aside from that there wasn't anything wrong with the food - it just tasted plain. The one thing that really stood out to me was the strong, powerful horseradish mustard - it took me by surprise and I quite liked it as a condiment to the sausage! If you like meat-and-wheat style meals without heavy seasoning, I can imagine you might like this place a lot. But personally, I felt the food needed an extra kick of flavour - maybe more fat, or more spice or paprika or aromatics, or even more salt? Something's missing, in any case. Felt like it needed some seasoning or sauce. - Potato and fried onion perogies - these are not bad, but not amazing either - Potato and cheddar perogies - these were underwhelming. Great place for some good Ukrainian/Russian comfort food. They have all the traditional stuff such as Perogies, borsch soups, Pelmeni and many other items. I ordered a meat borsch soup that was pretty delicious, olivye salad that I did enjoy as well, I feel like it was balanced with not too much mayo, and some herrings that were absolutely delicious. To wash all this deliciousness down try the baltika Russian beer they have which is great. I also got some potato and onion dumplings and the Ukrainian sausage that I took to go and ate later cuz I was so full. Overall this is a great place in the west end neighborhood. Had the assorted pierogies and pork schnitzel. Cheese pierogies and potatoes + onions pierogies were quite good, but the sauerkraut pierogies were very bland. The pork schnitzel was huge!....but also very bland. The sides with the schnitzel, however, were delightful - pickled beets, cabbage salad, mashed potatoes and a nice and spicy dark mustard. They don't have a lunch special but they do have a Ukranian dinner special that includes 2 cabbage rolls, A sausage and some perogies with some sauerkraut, horseradish and cabbage. I know I can eat a lot of food, but this is one of the times where I will not be going there as much. Here is the verdict. The potato perogies were like your traditional perogies with potato and cheese. It tastes homemade, but the dough was too thick for me. The kielbasa sausage was spiced well and it was very juicy. The cabbage rolls had more rice than meat which was somewhat disappointing. The condiments were average. The meal was large and filling. I like the atmosphere, which is very Ukrainian. And a little dingy but in a very very fitting way. But even though it's the Ukrainian village, it's not very Ukrainian in many ways. The beer they had was Russian (at least the one on be menu, maybe there were more that weren't), it would have been nice to see actual Ukrainian beer like Lvivske or Obolon'. The Pelmeni were delicious, 8/10 rating. The cabbage rolls were a little too meaty but I really enjoyed the perogies. I wish there were more options to mix/match, build smaller meals as the plate was huge and I wanted to be able to sample things without getting such a huge portion. read more

Great restaurant. I bought russian borsch there and Syberian pelmeni. So delicious, seriously. It's just so good. However, pelmeni cost over $15, that's what is a bit disappointing. I would say that there are a bit expensive dishes, as well as not, there. It depends on what you want. And portions are between "more than enough" - "big". The service was, as it's called, "not bad". Only price makes some tension, but it's not overpriced. If you spend a lot of money there, I bet you will not regret. I will definitely come there to try perogies! Ukraine Forever!!! read more
