We enjoyed a wonderful relaxing evening along the water in White Rock, BC. Uli"s was a highlight. Celebrating our anniversary with our son and daughter-in-law, my wife and I shared a generous plating of paella. It was excellent, perfectly seasoned with a generous amount of seafood. We did not feel rushed and enjoyed conversation on their patio. I recommend this establishment for great food, fine service, and a relaxed atmosphere. read more

This restaurant was terrible overall, other than the wait staff being friendly. We had relatives come from the US to visit, and they had been to Uli's a few years ago and had had a good experience, so we made this reservation. We drove all the way from downtown Vancouver for this experience. Our server was lovely and friendly, so that wasn't the problem. Two of us ordered the TWENTY NINE DOLLAR crab cake benedict, and they were bad. Really, really bad. The crab cakes were all burned on both sides, the hollandaise sauce already had a skin on top when they arrived, pretty much cold. Totally flavourless crab cakes, and/or any flavour they may have had was overtaken by the creamed corn underneath, which is odd to begin with. The hollandaise sauce was also flavour less. The whole plates of food were just mushy and unappetizing. The portions were minute for the price, totally not worth it (and I'm not from the USA where portions are big, so not making that comparison). One of our party ordered the paella, which she said tasted good enough, but the rice was soggy and it had no "crust" like you would expect from a real paella. They also had no clams, so they had to sub other seafood. It was not authentic at all. One of our party ordered a 5.0 Burger and it was decent in flavour but the fries were ice cold. Lastly, but importantly, one of our party ordered the beef dip and when it arrived it had a massive long hair dark woven through the sliced beef in the sandwich. When it was sent back, the server (different than our initial server) left the au jus on the table while the kitchen "remade" the beef dip, like they expected the customer to use old, cold au jus with a new beef dip. We asked for a new au jus to come with the new beef dip. Shouldn't have bothered because the new beef dip came to the table ice cold; we were pretty sure they had just taken the hair out of the old beef dip and sent it back out to us. We said we didn't want it anymore, and while that customer was now grossed out and no longer hungry after hair and ice cold beef, they said they would give him something on the house. He ordered the chicken thigh appy, and it was "meh". While we were there on the patio, they had the plastic siding open, but when it started to rain harder two of our party were getting wet so we asked for it to be closed. It took quite awhile for someone to come close it, so those customers were damp. As a last note, one of our party of five was in a wheelchair so I had called ahead to ensure they could accommodate a person sitting eating in their wheelchair before making the reservation, which they assured me they could. The table they gave us did have a space with no regular chair, but the customer's wheelchair could not be pushed in due to the table legs being in the way, so the customer had to get out of her wheelchair and sit on a regular chair which was very difficult and uncomfortable for her. Other than the sweet server we had for most of the sitting, who seemed pretty mortified about the beef dip, this experience was abysmal. For the prices Uli's charges, we would expect a decent experience so we were sadly disappointed and felt super ripped off. There are other restaurants on the White Rock boardwalk that are excellent, so we will have to pass on Uli's. Never again, Uli's, never again! read more

Delicious. Started with the bison carpaccio and a cup of tea, finished with the German Breakfast. The bison carpaccio was new to me... thinly sliced free range bison served with crispy shallots, capers and topped with garlic aioli and arugula. If you're looking for a treat, eat this. I had no idea what to expect with the German Breakfast, other than being told that the Seared Beast and Brine Bavarian meatloaf was "more like a sausage." With my expectations in check and after devouring the bison, the German Breakfast was served. The meatloaf was definitely more like a cross between Spam and actual ham... nothing like American Meatloaf. It was quite nice with two over-easy REAL organic eggs, with beautiful orange yokes. Reminded me quite a bit like the college days of spam and eggs... only much much better. The servers were attentive and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere and stellar view of the water from indoor and outdoor seating. read more

Last night we participated in the dinner benefit of Les Dames D'Eschoffier. The meal and wine pairing was delicious. It started with Bison Carpaccio garnished with fried shallots and arugula with tiny drops of horseradish mayo paired with a Chianti red wine. The carpaccio was so finely sliced and served along with delicate ever so thin toasted bread. Than a Prosecco to clear the palate. The second course was a Texmex risotto and seared halibut and broccolini. Absolutely delicious. It was served with an unoaked Chardonnay - perfect! The last course was a sweet cake with raspberries and a side dish of ice cream. Again absolutely delicious. Our waiter was attentive and informative about the meal and his service was impeccable. I was blown away by the gourmet meal because the setting is a little rustic and you just would not expect such a beautiful meal. Thank you so much! read more

Visited White Rock for the first time in 30 years! While reminiscing about cruising along Marine Drive, my Yorkshire Babe and her lovely daughter were loving the similarity to her time at the Seaside near Yarmouth. Naturally, since I am writing this on Yelp, we were looking for a place to eat. Uli popped up and we found ourselves standing in front of the restaurant. After getting a table overlooking the street and beach, we settled on pitcher of Sangria and a pot of steamed mussels and clams. Fresh and delicious, the broth could have been a meal in itself! Our server was attentive ans helpful with the menu. I went for the fish and chip as did the lovely daughter, while Yorshire had a grilled chicken caesar salad. As I recall, fish and chips in White Rock were always awesome and this dish did not disappoint! The service and ambiance is outstanding! The food, on the other hand needs a mention; if you are ordering anything other than burgers off the menu, the food quality can be extremely poor. At times, very good so consistency is an issue here. Specifically, I've ordered a daily special (fish) , over salted and overcooked it was inedible. Another time, Calamari, beyond over done , withered and over salted , mussels, over steamed , rubbery and gritty from sand; bison carpaccio, which is usually very good sliced very large and accompanied by over fried capers and presented as a hot mess. The bruschetta accompanying the carpaccio was too salty to eat. Seriously, none of these dishes should have left the kitchen. Sending all your orders back to the kitchen is not as easy as you would think. There have been occasions when all three of the appies have been great but this last experience is enough. With high prices, a terrible disappointment AND it was a considerable amount of money completely wasted. read more

It's been years since I've been to White Rock and the only thing that I could remember was the big hills leading down to the beach and the fact that the actual "rock" which the city gets their name from is painted white. After a jaunt along the boardwalk, we walked up and down Marine Drive looking for a place to eat until we arrived at Uli's. We wound up ordering the Oysters Rockefeller ($4.50 each) which is prepared with creamed spinach, grana padano cheese, and hollandaise sauce. While extremely cheesy, it's not a strong/hard cheese so it goes well with the delicate oyster. In keeping with our shellfish theme, we ordered the Steamed Mussels and Clams ($23) served with onions in a garlic and white wine broth. The mussels and clams were quite plump. My only complaint with this dish is that the broth was quite weak and lacked flavour. Prices here are a little bit on the expensive side, but probably within line with the other restaurants that cater to tourists in the area. Oysters Rockefeller are a must try when you visit here. read more

Great location on the white Rock strip. A meal with a view, not much more you could ask for. We came here for national cheeseburger day and they did not dissapoint. Meat is brought in daily and you can definitely taste the freshness and quality of the meat. The burgers were so juicy and flavorful paired with the shoe string fries was perfect. The food is always SO GOOD. I don't think I've ever came here and got bad food or service! Try their shoe string fries seriously 10/10, bohemian salad, the Rockefeller oyster (baked oyster) .. and basically everything else is a must try! You will not be disappointed by anything on their menu. (At least i wasn't) they also have a patio overlooking the pier which is perfect for a sunny day. I have been to Uli's three times - twice for dinner (one takeout) and once for brunch. My experience has been consistently positive and this place serves my favorite burgers in the lower mainland. For my most recent visit (brunch), I thoroughly enjoyed the food and had very good service. Feedback for why I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars concerns the price point - while the food quality is fantastic, I think for some items the quantity does not reflect price. For example, my Uli's Burger was $19.50 + $4 for bacon added. I feel that even a reduction of $2 across most of the item menus would be a fairer price point. Continuing, a minor observation I have is their reason for not serving blended drinks - their menu states that the blender sound would disrupt the atmosphere - is weak. The music the restaurant plays was a good volume level, and patron conversation volume when I went was slightly louder - considering that the place was not full or too busy, I don't believe that having a blender active would be unreasonable noise. Fortunately, the cocktails they have are still quite delicious. Here is a summary of what I had there: 1. Red Wine Sangria - great alcohol content, but it tasted like drink did not have much time to absorb all the fruits. Definitely have had better-tasting Sangrias on the Marine Drive strip. Still good. 2. Charlie Runkle - one of the best cocktails I've had. Nice and sweet, however, might be too sweet for some people (I have an insane sweet tooth and tolerance). 3. Mai Tai - sweet and delicious. 4. Calamari - weakest dish I had. While it was still yummy, I've had better at other restaurants, including cheaper ones like Cactus Club or Browns Social House. It was, however, lighter and less oily than many places. 5. Chowder - best seafood chowder I've had. Rich, chunky, and had lots of different ingredients to make each bite novel. 6. Fried chicken - very flavorful, the skin was great. I don't think it needed the gravy - I didn't think the gravy was anything special. 7. Steak and eggs - I only tried the steak, it was tender and wonderful at perfect medium rare temperature. 8. Crab cakes - first time I've tried this, so I have no reference point. It was, however, very delicious and I would definitely order it again. 9. Schnitzel (Forester) - mushrooms and sauce were fantastic. Very good texture. 10. Uli's Burger - this was my main order and I've had it all 3 times I've come. Juicy, great flavor, and quite heavy. The bacon is very high-quality and I strongly suggest you add it to your burger. Fries were a bit too salty for me, but if you like the salt content in McDonald's fries then it's very similar to that. I really like Uli's smaller-sizes fries, but would probably ask for less salt next time. 11. Baked Brie - this was absolutely scrumptious. I would not mind going and just ordering three of these. The pastry part and crostinis they give help balance out the richness of the cheese. I would advise people to try some with the blueberries they provide as well. 12. Mussels - of all the dishes I've had, this one was easily the best bang for your buck. There were so many mussels, and the taste was pretty good. We did not try the chorizo addition, but I am interested in getting that next time. If you're in the area, you must try this place at least once! read more

One of our favourite spot to go. They have a great gluten free options and so far, we have been really happy with our food and the service we received. Their burgers are big, meaty and very juicy. Their fish and chip is great too. It's lightly battered and not too greasy. Our aunt who has celiac was very impressed with the gluten free bun because it tasted really good (from what I hear, GF bread and buns can taste like eating sawdust.) It doesn't have a fine dining atmosphere but more of a casual feel to it but their food is really delicious. UPDATE: We had the Donia farm 32oz bone in steak and it was amazing!!! If you like medium rare, I recommend it having medium since it is such a thick stead. Uli's has become our favourite spot for a meal in White Rock. read more

After arriving in Vancouver, I picked up my rental car at Enterprise and asked a staff member there where is the best place to go for lunch. Without hesitation he said if we had time to drive to Whiterock, Uli's was the place to go for the best burger. This guy was not lying! Literally the best burger of my life! Uli's is on the main strip of Whiterock overlooking the ocean. My husband and I chose to sit on the patio so we could be in the sun and look at the water. Our server, I believe her name was Hailey, was awesome. Very sweet and welcoming. We asked which burger was the best and without hesitation she told us the 4.0. I got mine with fries and my husband got his with the chowder. Let me tell you, this burger was delicious. First of all, it was cooked perfectly, not overdone and dried out. It was obviously homemade and not frozen. The bun was fresh and soft. There were fried jalapenos and goat cheese, a little garlic aioli and some arugula on top of the burger. The flavour combination was out of this world. The fries were also delicious. Shoestring style, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Lets just talk about their homemade ketchup for a minute. Seriously, the best ketchup you will ever have. I wanted to bottle it up and take it home with me. My husband loved the chowder. I didn't try any as I'm allergic to shrimp, but he said it was ridiculously good and he would definitely get it again. I'd give Uli's 10 stars if I could. Decided to try something new on the White Rock Waterfront. Looking back, it was worth every bit of the drive in the snowfall! Seemed to be a great spot for regulars and visitors alike. Given the season, it was too cold to sit out on the patio but what a treat it would be in the summer to eat and watch the cars and people at the same time. We ordered the Smoked Salmon Benedict, Crab Cakes Benedict, and Uli Burger. Crab Cakes were as promised; soft and flaky, one bite and I was in love. Salmon Benedict was delicious with a hint of cheese; the potatoes were a good contrast with a little kick of salty. The fries from the burger (yes, I mooched) were delicious without any excess oil; a pleasant surprise when some places serve you fries dripping with it. Portions were large enough to leave us satisfied without leaving us looking for a spot to nap. Even with a bustling restaurant as the morning progressed, service remained prompt and overall, excellent. We also got a crash course in the history behind the restaurant and the name. read more

Enticed by the wall art of interesting foodie verses and a side crop of pig parts on a whole pig me and my partner walked up and down the Marine Drive street looking for a place to sit and snack on and we walked into Uli's. It's actually a pretty big place, with a wide patio up front and two entrances (looks like this place is made up of two storefronts) and a menu that was filled with different types of items. We were here a night so we could not take in the view from this place but it is located pretty close to the long lying pier that was all lit up at night. After going up and down the menu we decided on the Roast Beef Sandwich and a 1-piece order of Ling Cod fish & chips. We were out of luck on the Roast Beef as they were sold out of that, and some other items on the menu, one of them I remembered was the pork hock soup. We quickly decided to order the Veggie Burger with a side caesar salad. The place has some cool fixtures, look above at the lighting that is hanging over your table, it's got a cool retro style. Also when our food came a person came in with his instruments and was setting up for the night to play some tunes. Yes, this place occasionally has live music. The food came, and to start with, the fried ling cod was pretty good, medium on the batter, but nice and hot inside, moist, and not tasting like something that has been in the freezer like some other fish and chip joints. It was a good piece of fish, the fries were freshly cut, from what potato I don't know, but some fries were extremely long. You don't get that McDonald's like crisp crunch, as these were big fries, but they were fresh. This plate also came with a side of coleslaw. The two piece was $17, and we only wanted one and it still came up to $13 from what the bill said. The second dish we had was the veggie burger. The pattie of this thing was made of quinoa, and it sounded good, yet the pattie just wasn't executed that well. My partner has had some pretty good veggie patties lately and this one was like a mashed potatoe pattie. It was soft, mushy, yet holding form cause it was put in a bun. Two thin patties, if I closed my eyes I would have thought this was potatoe and not quinoa. Usually when we order a veggie burger, the pattie is pretty substantial, has bite, but these two thin things just didn't satisfy, it didn't feel like chomping your teeth into a burger but something you would have whipped up as a student looking into the fridge at home and whipping up something real quick. They also gave a small serving of coleslaw, and we had caesar on the side. The salad was good, wondering if the sauce they used was house made, as it didn't taste like it, but they didn't over sauce the thing. It was an OK experience, nothing crazy, I did notice the newspaper articles in the washroom proclaiming that they have won burger of the year two years in a row. I looked through the bar menu, and they have quite a few beers here. It's a great spot and makes me wonder how this place is in the summer. read more

Mussels are one of my favourite appies, but only if they are nice and plump and in a good sauce. Asked the server how they were at the moment and he gave them a two thumbs up as he also did with the clams. Should have been two thumbs down! Stringy skinny mussels and tiny little clams - never mind they were served without a proper utensil to pick up the shells. Server recommended the tomato & chorizo sauce. My comment is pass on that! Was probably the worst mussel/clam sauce I've ever had. Would have sent it back, but didn't want to upset my fellow diners by doing so. Probably won't go back ever. read more

Been here twice. Both times it was on the weekend, for brunch. The first time was great. I ordered the crab eggs benny. On my second visit, I ordered the crab eggs benny again, same as the first, poached medium. Unfortunately, both eggs came out hard. Brunch is served until a little after 3pm on a Sunday. The portions sizes are fair. They have a great beer selections with something for everyone. A bit pricey though. Again the sushi place I wanted to go to at white rock is closed and remembering that a friend once recommended this place, we decided to give it a try. All patio seatings were taken but the inside was practically empty. That's ok, it was crazy hot that day and no suntans for me. Though I must say the patio would give you a better view of the pier 'cause you can't see anything inside. We ordered: -Uli's Burger (4/5-$18): My friend told me this is the to order item so we decided to order this to share. Don't know what's so special or what they did with this burger but it was tasty. The bun had parts that tasted a bit off. Overbaked? Stale? Not sure. The shoestring fries were nice but a bit hard to eat with a fork. -Sousvide flat iron steak and frites (3.5/5-$29): The sousvide steak was tender as it should be but I thought it could do a bit longer on the pan to finish off. The sauce that came with was good but I couldn't taste any bone marrow butter and I wonder if it was inflused with the demi-glaze. Other than it using the process of sousvide-ing, I didn't think this steak was worth $29. If I do come back, I'm getting a burger. The service was alright. She didn't give us too much attention but it didn't bother us too much anyways. read more

The 2 star is primarily for the state of the restaurant. I give the service 5 stars. Knowledgable, friendly and there at the right times. I give the food 4 stars. The Charcuterie plate was delicious, as was the crustini that came with it but the focaccia was bland and the balsamic vinegar/olive oil was flat. The location is perfect for a view of the beach. however the grass area across the street is under construction and will be for most of the year it seems so the view is less appealing. The big issue I have with this place is how run down it is. It is worn and dirty. Needs a lick of paint and a good clean. read more

I came here while visiting White Rock and was entrusted by my family to find a nice place to eat, with good food, and a pretty view of the ocean. I guess we accomplished this mission however wasn't overly impressed with the food. My first disappointment was seeing the adorable outdoor seating on the patio with the beautiful views of the water however was told we needed a reservation to sit outside :( we had just driven 2.5 hours to have a nice dinner and were just a little bummed. My second disappointment being the majority of the food we ordered. It all tasted good but nothing memorable. We ordered the mussels/clams in garlic sauce, paella, sablefish, gnocchi, and ragu. The only dish that I really enjoyed was the paella! It had some strong yet traditional garlic-y and tomato-y flavors. The rice was cooked nicely- not too dry and not too soft but what I loved most about their paella was all the different proteins- chicken, sausage, mussels, clams, and shrimp!
