Best appointment in a long time at any Ulta location around the country. Superb job. Exceptionally careful, conscientious stylist, new to me. Liked the job in the salon; liked the results after the salon. (I always leave with wet, unstyled hair. On purpose.) Color was good; cut was good. No hair dye on pillow afterward (meaning hair was sufficiently rinsed out.) Agreeable personality (not a given.) One of the best Ulta appointments ever. Thank you. read more

Horrible experience with Nicol on 8/11/25. I went in for my 2nd visit w Nicol, to get a trim for my chin length bob. she was to trim it, add some texture to the sides and remove bulk from the back. I was very specific about a left side part cut- she refused to do that and said she has never cut any hair ever for a part. I should've left at that point- because what kind of stylist can't cut hair for a side part? I was in the chair, hair wet & trusted her expertise though. She DESTROYED my hair. Chopped it all off above my ears- uneven everywhere- no cohesion. When I saw what she had done I told her to stop- she tried pulling me in closer w her dryer brush saying "let me curl it"- I told her to STOP! I was shocked what she had done. I trusted her. their so called highest level stylist. She immediately offered that they wouldn't charge me- as she knew what she had done. It wasn't about the money- it was my hair!! I'm in marketing and very forward facing w clients. I left there panicked and in tears. Now- to make matters worse, came the response from the manager Renee. Renee decided to take the approach of telling me that theres nothing they can do and Ulta isn't a salon for me. unfortunately for Renee, this was a bad move. Everyone was recorded and I've been in touch with corporate- they were also shocked at how Renee handled this. I don't believe the stylist maliciously cut my hair to the abysmal level she did. She knew what she had done - but I don't believe she did it intentionally. Renee, however, didn't think I'd go over her and contact corporate with photos, details and phone recordings. This specific salon is a joke. their management is a joke. However, this salon doesn't reflect Ulta as a whole - and their corporate level wasn't pleased to hear this is how things were handled. I would warn anyone about getting a cut with Nicol- as she won't listen to what you want. And, God forbid you contact the store to follow up - you'll be berated, belittled and told you're not welcome back by Renee. read more

Yesterday I visited this store with my 7-year-old daughter and had one of the strangest and most uncomfortable experiences I've ever had while shopping. An employee followed us closely around the store as if I was stealing. It was so obvious that even my daughter noticed and asked why "the lady was staring at us." I felt singled out and discriminated against, and it turned what should have been a quick, pleasant trip into something upsetting that I then had to explain to my child. I've decided to take my business to Sephora across the street from now on. No customer should be made to feel watched, judged, or unwelcome simply for walking in the door. read more

I scheduled a hair and formal makeup appointment for my wedding at the Machesney Park, IL Ulta location. I had read the reviews about rudeness (which concerned me) but decided I would give it a try anyway. Showed up on time at 10 am and was completely ignored by the first stylist. Waited another 10 minutes to finally be acknowledged by a second stylist who informed me that they did not have my appointment and they have "lost a few stylists" recently so they could do nothing for me. I even showed them the nearly 15 min phone call to their location I had made the month prior to book the appt. My wedding was to start at 330pm. I was literally sitting in their parking lot on the brink of tears on my wedding day calling every hair place in the area- desperately trying to find someone who could help me. I finally reached Jordan at Golden Aura who was my hero that day. She said, "I got you girl", and she said she could work me in at 1230 pm for makeup and hair. I cannot tell you how wonderful she was in listening to how I wanted to look that day and she took great care in making sure every detail was the way I wanted it. Because of her I got to feel beautiful and confident on my wedding day and I arrived on time! The inside of the salon looked so much nicer than Ulta and all of the staff were welcoming and attentive. If you are looking for hair or makeup, I highly recommend Golden Aura Hair and Spa, and I definitely recommend Jordan. Avoid Ulta unless you like being treated poorly, being ignored and someone not giving a crap about you or your needs. read more

This salon saved my hair! I originally went to the Ulta in Rockford and did not get what I asked for and they cut it way too short. I called over to the Machesney Park location and Ashley fit me in the same day and assured me she would make sure I was satisfied with my hair before I left. I reluctantly went but thought it couldn't get much worse. Ashley made me feel comfortable instantly and actually listened to what I wanted done to my hair. She then explained it to the stylist Stephani and she got the color right and helped me be okay with the length by adding layers. Ever since then I've been going back here to get my hair done and I am happy every time I leave. I will forever be thankful to Ashley and Stephani for fixing my hair and making sure I'm happy before I leave! read more

This is the second time I've come here in the last few months. I haven't been greeted at the door like they used to do. Four staff members are laughing and talking and never asked me if I needed assistance. I did need help and shouldn't have to ask them because that's what they are getting paid for. I went in for what I asked was a few highlights through my dark roots. came out with no dark left. I also had her trim my hair which took her 10 minutes and walked out paying $220. for a trim and partial highlight. while I don't hate the color, it definitely was the most expensive hair experience I've ever had. Ulta is not a high end salon and should not be charging as much or more than one. I won't return for my hair again. I was driving in to Chicago area fora full highlight, cut and style for less at a high quality salon. I've never paid $80 in my life for a 10 minute trim. it looks like she cut my hair with fabric scissors. read more

Rude customer service. They harass you for a phone number. I politely refuse and they wanted anyones, family members, friends. I said no. They have claimed more than once that you can't return without providing a phone number. Too bad their return policy says no such thing. I have never had issues with the Janesville Ulta and not giving my number. I don't know what their obsession is and why they choose to lie about returns. I will take my business to Janesville where they are nicer. read more

Went here this weekend to get a new brand of makeup. I was surprised at how knowledgeable and friendly the staff were. They even put some of the kind I wanted on me and matched my shade for me. They have low end and high end makeup so any budget works here. read more

This is the by far the worst Ulta location I've ever been to! Usually when I go into one of their stores the staff is helpful and approaches me to ask if there's anything that they can help me with. At this location the employees scatter when they see customers and when you do find them to ask a question they know absolutely nothing about the products that they sell there. When you check out they don't ask you if you want to use your rewards even if you are some super platinum member. I don't even know why the store opens and why they have employees there if they don't want to help customers. I think I need to stop shopping here and go to Sephora. Will not be going back ever. read more

Hair stylist with piggie tails and high pitch voice BOTCHED my friends hair... My friend had went in before to this same woman and got the color she wanted (she asked for permanent, this woman gave her temporary dye) but it ended up great! THIS TIME IT TOOK FIVE HOURS TO DO THE SAME THING. FIRST, she bleaches the parts that need color. Instead of putting the color my friend ASKED FOR, she puts in an orange/red color and she ends up telling the stylist she doesn't like it. Then the stylist puts in the burgundy AND IT STILL LOOKS TERRIBLE. So she puts in ANOTHER layer of red because that's what her manger said would "help it". So we sat in the store for five hours just for this armature stylist to chemically RUIN her hair. I barely know anything about hair but I guarantee, I definitely would've done 50x better. read more

I hate to post this here and give a low score to Ulta overall but the salon in this store is awful. I really wish I had seen the reviews posted here prior to booking my appointment with Stephani because if I had I never would've gone. I did not book for a color correction like the other reviewer here but now I definitely need one. I was here for 5 hours, left with my hair not even almost resembling what I wanted and actually cried in the parking lot. That might sound dramatic but I was so upset with how the situation was handled that I couldn't even address it at the time. I ended up paying over $150 to have my hair destroyed. When she sent me to the checkout to pay, she made sure to let me know she gave me a "discount" and didn't charge me for all the extra bowls of bleach she had to mix. In fairness I even left her a good TIP because she still took most of her day doing this and being someone who has worked in the service industry I know most people rely on that. I waited a few weeks to write this review to make sure I wasn't just writing it out of anger, but since now my hair is breaking off at the ends from the damage I think it's only fair to warn future customers so they don't have to go through what I did. I know this is still a business but as a customer service manager myself I would've handled this much differently. Truth is I didn't feel like I should have to pay but I went with it just so I could get the heck out of there. I spend a lot of money at Ulta on a variety of different things but after this I will definitely not be using the salon ever again. read more
