I moved to Chicago right before the pandemic so I could not find a stylist . I wanted to find a local place to do my hair and oh I am so glad I came to this ulta. I dyed my hair black for years and then I overused bleach my hair is so damaged , so I decided to experiment with fun colors . Blue purple etc . I wanted to find a place where the stylist wasn't gonna shame me for experimenting and was gonna be understanding . I wasn't expecting a lot giving the state of my hair , but oh wow! Melissa did an AMAZING job with my hair. I am so please with my haircut . And I'm definitely never gonna bleach my hair on my own again. Also this place was extremely clean . Two stars seems a little harsh, but "Meh. I've experienced better" really sums it up. I did a happy dance when I saw Ulta was coming to the Oak Park area. No, really. I did! I did another happy dance when they opened for business. Yet, I still go to Greek Town Ulta on Halsted! Halsted Ulta seems to have a better selection, and the customer service experience is far better. I made the mistake of entering the River Forest Ulta with my children. I know some people don't care for children, but little boys staying out of the way... entertaining themselves on electronic devices aren't really what I would call a threat worthy of nasty looks. No thank you. I really hate that I finally got what I always wanted and it turned out this way. I dropped in to look at CC Cushions and lip/cheek combos. I usually shop at Sephora, but Ulta was closer today so I stopped in there. I was greeted and explained what I was looking for and he took me straight to a couple options. He causally dipped his finger into the make up to show me be color (the CC cushions are sponges and will hold God knows how much dirt and bacteria). Same thing with the lip/cheek combo. Then I walked around a bit and started talking to someone else. She also dipped her fingers into the make up, then used a sponge to apply it to my face (without sanitizing the make up first). I was horrified and mostly in shock, so I just picked up a new cartridge and cashed out (I was in a make up pinch, so I just bought the products and left). Just a note: I have witnessed Sephora employees do the same sort of thing, but they are always careful to sanitize the make up BEFORE they apply it to your face. I got home and to my horror, the CC cushion had been opened, used, and had hairs in it. I will be returning my products and will never return to an Ulta again. Worst customer service I've ever gotten. The General Manager was the one that rang me up and she was really nice. But one of the associate that I asked a simple yes or no question gave me a bad attitude saying, "I don't know, what does it say on the box?" Like why? If your having a bad day might as well go home or if you don't feel like working just quit. I cannot stand people with that kind of attitude. I have worked in the Customer Service arena for so long and even though I'm having a bad day I would never treat them like how this associate treated me. Oh, did I forget to mention that after this associate walk out, I heard her talking to another associate of what she did to me saying "Read the box, its that simple" and then laughing (so rude). The stylists need to learn how to get the right color. Asking the customers to point out a color in a book is just hit or miss. I had to spend 150 dollars to correct the Bozo the Clown color. I do not appreciate spending 120 dollars on color and a cut to be told that the color would fade if I washed my hair a lot. This is not a professional enviroment. I'm not sure of the thinking behind it, but one single door is designated for entry which requires everyone that enters to grab a single handle. Meanwhile, the large revolving doors are designated for exit. This seems completely backwards, as the goal these days is creating as many touchless points of access as possible. I go here about every other week. I have had services done brows and blow outs and have nothing but a + experience. The staff is extremely helpful, if they dont have an answer they will find someone who will. I had three people help me find an it cosmetics blush that I couldn't remember the name of! PREMIUM MAKEUP AREA CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TRASH.COM!!! I have lived in the area most of my life and have been a long standing customer. Over the years the quality of this location's customer service is piss poor to say the VERY least. It is customary that when in the "premium" makeup section the reps are cackling amongst themselves, not assisting customers. On more than one occasion I had to damn near chase a rep around the display stations to get her to acknowledge my existence. Management should address this pronto! In reality if this app offered me the ability to give a negative amount of stars I would easily score this location with a -5 . read more

I have to give this establishment 2 starts due to the esthetics and customer service here. Upon entering you see a mess everywhere. Things out of place, make up smeared everywhere. Getting a customer service rep to help you is like trying to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and when you do finally get some service they dont know what your asking for. I love shopping for cosmetics, and since this Ulta was close to home, I've patronized it several times. I'm sorry to say that most of my visits have been disappointing and even aggravating. First, the store is usually dirty and reveals a lack of attention to patrons' needs. For example, during one visit, the tissue box at one station was empty. A few days later, when I returned to exchange something, the box was still empty! This store is chronically understocked, often w big gaps in the displays showing where items are missing. Sample products are either missing or completely disgusting. If I ask when an item is expected to be in, the response is just a guess. Also, the staff can often be found in a huddle conversing w each other, but not attending to customers. I usually deliberately browse by myself, but I recently found myself needing the help of a sales associate. She DID show me how to help with a makeup issue, but brought me an unnecessary amount of expensive items for me to buy. Sadly, when I tried these items at home, the effect was not the same, so I ended up returning almost all my purchases. As seems to be characteristic of this store (and other Ultas), the associate was condescending and made derogatory remarks about the makeup I was wearing. I would skip this Ulta entirely, unless you know exactly what you want. Don't patronize the salon either. I had a very bad color experience w Vince. The prices at the salon are comparable to or even higher than high end salons like Aveda, and the results are terrible. I'll avoid this Ulta in favor of Sephora, or purchase makeup on www.sephora.com or other websites. read more

I went to this location several months ago to stock up on primer that was on sale. A sales associate directed me to where the primer was located. I am not very familiar with this Ulta location as I do not go there often. When I got to the primer, the container looked a bit used. I unscrewed the cap and sure enough it had been used. I brought this to the sales associate's attention and she took it away. I picked up a few more primers and they were also used. The sales associate seemed annoyed that I kept pointing this out to her. I ended up only getting one because all the others were used. I like Ulta's rewards program but I wish the stores took sanitation more seriously. I no longer trust their products that are not wrapped in plastic. read more

I decided to check out this Ulta during my lunch break (I work in oak park). I was looking for a face primer and had a couple questions, but the workers seemed very occupied gossiping. I didn't want to be rude and waited to see if one of them would ask me if I needed help. I was in the aisle for ten minutes and none of them offered to assist me. Usually I go to Norridge Ulta and the staff there is super helpful. Staff in Ulta River Forest need to start being a little more helpful. read more

I went here after a received a coupon for a first time salon appointment. Easy online scheduling, but probably one of the most uncomfortable hair experiences of my life. No one greeted me, seemed annoyed that I was there (even though I had an appointment) and the gentleman that cut my hair barely spoke to me or instructed me what to do. There was a moment where he sat me down in the styling chair and walked to the sinks... I didn't know if I was supposed to follow him or what. I tried to make small talk but he was just very short with me and preferred talking to the other stylists and patrons as if I wasn't even there. When his next appointment showed up he seemed very apologetic to her for the delay but also made it seem like I was somehow at fault for that. I do admit I ended up with a pretty nice cut and blowout, but the most uncomfortable hour of my life will keep me from going back. read more

When this store first opened it was great, plenty of employees to help in the makeup section. Now you have to run around and wait for forever for help if you get any at all. Based on how quickly one can spend $100 our more in this place, you would think they could maintain the service and cleanliness of the makeup bar better. I came her for an eyebrow and lip wax. The price was a little more than I am used to paying- $20 for eyebrow, $7 for lip I believe but completely worth it. The girl who did them was named Abbie and she did a great job. Some places I've been to in the past have you lie down to get the wax and after the brows never look quite even. Here you are sitting up the whole time. The wax that was used barely hurt at all which is a definite bonus. Will be definitely coming back in the future. read more

Ulta has seen my last purchase. Their return policy is ridiculous. I was given the wrong color eyebrown pencils, but unaware of it until I opened today. I was told that if you don't have a receipt they cannot exchange it (what!) or provide a credit. In the 20th century, don't retailers now have updated systems where you can provide the credit card that was used? Ulta needs to take lessons from Amazon and others about customer service. I basically have merchandise I cant use because they gave me the wrong ones. Don't buy anything there - unless you save every receipt. read more

Today was my 1st time entering the ulta in river forest and I must say it was a very disappointing experience. I mean the employees couldn't be more ignorant and blatantly RUDE! The aisles are so very close together that it's hard to get around. Plus, the workers hawk you like you are about to steal an $8 nail polish. I've had horrible treatment at this Ulta and the one on State street downtown (I've already lodged a complaint at HQ for that location). I much prefer the Ulta location downtown on Halsted. Ulta is the one store where I can be guaranteed no service. No matter which location I try, the clerks' primary objective is to stand around and look nice. Oh, and second objective? Give the evil eye to shoppers who don't stack up so they go away and don't affect the brand. I had lots of questions about hair products and perfumes when I stopped by the River Forest location last night and couldn't find anyone to help. Two clerks in the Urban Decay area were intent upon making me feel uncomfortable. No one glares at anyone that long and hard unless they want you out of the store. No longer patronizing the salon. Prices were raised this summer, which is somewhat understandable, but as a long time, established customer, it would have been nice if I had been told that. Instead I found out when I got to the register and found out I was being charged a significant amount more. A salon in the back of a retail store shouldn't be charging more than stand alone salons in my opinion. But that alone was not enough to lose my business. Typically only one cashier works the register on Saturday mornings. Once you get your haircut, you get to go stand in line to pay. The black- clad, snooty ladies with the headsets march back and forth, obviously seeing the lines, but doing nothing to jump in and help the poor, harried cashier. Totally turns me off. VERY DISAPPOINTED. The store located in River Forest, IL at approximately 3pm... profiled my niece and her friend of stealing. These are young college women, that do not need to steal. They questioned them and ran the camera, and the store realized that these young ladies did not steal anything. My niece and her friend and traumatized and embarrassed. I called and spoke to the manager name Rose, she stated non challantly that she do not remember the incident. I called corporate and filed a complaint, now I have to wait on a Chelsey Philip's to call me. This is unacceptable on all levels over 5 dollar pencil. The manager Rose call my niece to apologized and offer her a goodie bag (an insult), after these ladies been humiliated and embarrassed. Then Rose called me an apologize, and offer the girls a spa day (insult). My question to her was.. what will happen to that associate who is doing several jobs apparently (security, sales)... she stated "I will explain to her the policies". Unacceptable!!!!!! This store publishes coupons to lure customers into the store and then in the fine print excludes the major cosmetic brands on display at the front of the shop. Insult to injury: You wait in a long line while the cashier haggles with each customer over coupons and 'points,' only to learn that your item isn't covered by the coupon either.
