Ultimate Fitness has been a game changer for me as far as my fitness goals for turning around my osteoporosis. Diagnosed four years ago, I changed my diet and supplements and stepped up my exercise with walking and hiking. I was determined to turn my bone density around without medication. But two years into it, another DEXA scan and I wasn't doing enough, my osteoporosis got worse. I went to UFIT about 11 months ago, 2x a week, in addition to my walking, hiking, and nutrition refinement. I just got a new bone scan and my bone density is in the osteopenia range, not osteoporosis! This is a big win and I plan to keep progressing. My doctors now say no need for medication now. The loss of muscle mass and strength as we age is insidious. It happens so slowly that we often don't even notice it. As a younger man, I had always considered resistance training to be more closely related to narcissism rather than overall health. However, that all began to change when my wife started going to Ultimate Fitness in Mill Valley and encouraged by her progress, I decided to give it a try. I had "resisted" at first, feeling that my 20-year yoga practice and two-mile daily walk were sufficient to keep me in shape. However, I am now a true believer in proprietor Randy Green's 30-minute, twice weekly resistance training regimen at Ultimate Fitness on Miller Avenue. With the support and encouragement of Randy and my personal trainer, Victoria, the results speak for themselves. Despite numerous breaks for vacations, COVID-19, various medical setbacks, including the diagnosis and treatment for an extremely rare blood cancer and a total hip replacement, I'm much stronger and healthier at 78 than I was at 69. I'm lifting more than twice what I was on all the 12 resistance exercises I do; for example going from bicep curls with 10-pound dumbbells to 20 pounders. I've gone from weighing 180 pounds on my 6-foot frame to 163 pounds with 18% body fat, and I no longer feel tired all of the time. OMG this place has been a lifesaver! I have a very full schedule and this fitness program only asks for 30 minutes, twice a week. In only a few months I have lost weight and gained muscle and strength. The personal trainers are fantastic - they are really experienced with a wealth of knowledge. I usually work with Nina who walks me through each machine; she not only motivates me but makes the time pass so quickly! I am always surprised when my time is up and I am walking out the door feeling strong and fit. They make everything seem easy - from parking, to scheduling, to your trainer preparing each machine for your level. It makes it really hard to talk yourself out of going. I also love how there are only a few clients there at any given time, so there is no "gym scene", as a woman I really appreciate that. I have been going to Ultimate Fitness three times per week for 30 minute sessions over the past 7 years. I enjoy my sessions and feel invigorated when I leave. This is what I know about Ultimate Fitness: 1) It makes working out idiot proof (see above) 2) It's fun - the trainers are nice, music generally retro, environs chill 3) It's easy - 2 times / wk, 20 mins / time 4) It gets results - after just a scant few sessions, I'm already more tone 5) It's not cheap - sure, you could pay $49/month or whatever for 24 Hour Fitness, but if you're like me, you'd basically be paying them not to show up at their gym every month. Sort of like how I treat Netflix. I pay them $12 / month to keep the same crappy movie I still haven't watched since last June. 6) It's effective - you pay in advance for at least 3 months of sessions, so you damn well better show up A special bonus feature is that John Gray, "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus," works out here. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad, but it's certainly noteworthy and guaranteed to be a conversation starter at cocktail parties. read more

I was fortunate to discover Ultimate Fitness about 12 years ago. As a naturally sedentary person, I'd searched for years for some type of exercise that would appeal to me for longer than a few weeks. If you had told me at the outset that I'd still be doing slow-movement strength training with some cardio thrown in, three times per week well over a decade later, I would never have believed it. As an older woman, I think it is of extreme importance to maintain muscle and and bone strength through weight-bearing exercise, in which Ultimate Fitness specializes. The trainers at Ultimate Fitness are sensitive and understanding. They let me dictate my own pace and never push too hard, while still encouraging me to try something new or work a little longer --- I really appreciate that. I do not like to work out. So when I saw the sign, "20 minutes, 2x/week", I was curious. Plus I had just received a diagnosis of osteopenia, so I thought I should give the strength training a try. That was four years ago. I have never stuck with an exercise routine for so long! There have been many benefits --- my lower back pain is almost completely gone, I am toned like I have never been before (such compliments I get!), I feel better and stronger, my osteopenia has not worsened despite the cancer medicine I have to take, and I have actually grown an inch from better posture and a stronger core. A very, very expensive mistake! At first, I was willing to pay the steep fee of $1,400 for 3 months of their "complete 20 minute workout" but unfortunately, the only thing complete about it is the waste of money. First off, the owner was pretty pushy, a sort used car salesman type, and the first thing she did was up-sell me to the 30 minute workout (I guess 20 minutes wasn't that complete after all). But, I admit, I fell for the promise of the "slow motion" training, so I took the plunge and handed over the check with high hopes... what a mistake! It really is a gimmick. It isn't any more effective than any other kind of training, and definitely isn't worth the hefty $1,400 price tag (and BEWARE: absolutely no refunds on the unused portion if you are unhappy). Also, you don't have the same trainer regularly, or even really have a say in who your trainer will be - you're kinda "assigned" one according to availability. It's a strange system. I never knew who would be my trainer when I showed up. Anyway, I'm going to try to 24 Fitness Loop just down the street. They have better hours, pretty good Yelp reviews, and I'm determined to not give up on my fitness goals, despite this fiasco. :) Stay healthy everyone! read more

My body is muuuuuch more flexible. I slump less and have a stronger "core". No more problem knees anymore! And I have lost weight. This gym has been treating me great for 7 years. I have never been a "jock" and I continue to prefer sitting down with a good book over being active but I would show up at these training sessions come hell or high water. I knew the trainers would be able to work around whatever new ache or pain that popped up and challenge my body conscientiously. My butt went from non existent to a delicious little bubble and my "granny arms" returned to being more age appropriate (I'm 27.) The work outs are thorough but super time efficient so you can never use the excuse "I just don't have time to go to the gym." It's 30 minutes and then you move on with your day. The environment is truly unique: the vibe is laid back, there's no gross sweaty guys that come up and hit on you, you create close trusting relationships with the trainers, and the music is chill and retro. As a bonus, it is also dog friendly! read more
