A friend recommended I try Dathan Hunter Salon so I stopped by and checked it out, it's in a great spot in the downtown area, there is parking nearby and some of my favorite shops too. The salon was modern and clean and they had adorable dogs so I made an appointment with Ilyana. I ran a little late for my appointment but they forgave me, I enjoyed the experience and Ilyana did a fantastic job picking up where my previous stylist left off and my hair looks better than ever. I made my next appointment before I left and am delighted to have found a new spot for getting all prettied up.

She told me exactly what she was doing as she cut my hair. How considerate of her. She took her time and nailed the style. She gave me great instructions on using a diffuser with curl-defining cream. (It's a great product, it was not a hard sell) I would have never thought to try it on my very straight hair. The scalp massage with shampoo felt amazing! There were other women in the salon, I was very impressed by their color and cuts. I have several acquaintances who use this salon. Their hair always looks great. The salon has a nice vibe, it's clean and stylish. Dathan and Ilyana are warm and friendly. It was a pleasure to get a cut. The shop is very convenient to the ferry if you live on the islands. A big plus for me! The price was reasonable.

As someone who has had a vet horrible hair cut experience, I dread trying to find the one to take a chance on and willingly go months or years waiting to find the right one. I took that chance with Starz and didn't ask for anyone in particular but I just so happen to get placed with the perfect stylist, Chrystal! She listened and gave me the exact cut I was looking for. She's so sweet and personable and great to chat with. Before you know it, your are in and out. The price is a little high for a cut ($45), but I will gladly pay it again and again knowing I won't walk out looking like a butchered sheep dog. I highly recommend Chrystal for your hair needs.

Situated right on Congress street in a bustling downtown location, this place is a pure gem. Giant windows in the front allow for a lot of natural light, which adds even more to the wonderful ambience they have going on here. No harsh lighting here! The decor is simple yet beautiful. The hair stylists work well together and are super friendly! You can really tell that the owner takes pride in her work, as do her employees. The bathroom even has a glamorous feel! I feel at home when I'm here, and I am so glad Jessica made the transition to this space! Plenty of parking here. Entrance is easy to see and handicap accessible. Kelley's station is the first, closest to the door. They have a small sitting area where you can find refreshments while you wait. Bathroom is right there as well. Multiple booths for stylists and at the back is the nail technician section. Many colors and styles of nail paints are available. Two sinks for washing or rinsing of hair. One stylist does extensions of every color and length you could want. So disappointed and upset at my experience. I went in and explained I'm a natural blonde and get…read morehighlights once a year to brighten things up in the winter and the sun takes care of the rest in the summer, so I wanted something super low maintenance that would grow out as naturally as possible. I let her know I had a wedding coming up and I chose here because they explicitly advertise low maintenance highlights that grow out without harsh lines. As soon as I got back from the shampoo bowl I noticed my blonde was multiple shades lighter than anything I would be able to keep up with, and panicked a bit. Kristen acknowledged it was a lot. When we looked at the line of where the highlights started versus my root she expressed understanding that this wasn't super blended and tried to put some color on it to fix it. There were also spots where the bleach bled, so there are random (literal) spots in my hair that are much brighter than other areas (see pics). I was stressing since this was the very front of my hair that would show in an updo, and the side of my head looked like there was a bald spot from the bleach lol. She assured me I could come back to get some lowlights or some kind of correction so I tipped well and left, despite being pretty anxious. I reached out to Kristen the next day to schedule a fix like she said and this was her response: "Sorry you're not happy with your color! I feel as though my hair coloring technique isn't what you're looking for and another artist will have the technique you're looking for. In this case, we will refund you for your service." What??? I have two weeks until a wedding and if that's not your technique, then why do you advertise highlights with "optimal brightness without noticeable lines or harsh grow out"? Such a strange way of handling it when you don't deliver well. Leaving me high and dry, stressing out trying to find an appointment somewhere rather than fixing it. And I personally think if you can't fix highlights that don't look good or bleach bleeds, you shouldn't be doing highlights in the first place. Like I said strange, disappointing experience. I can see that someone else on here had a similar one, too. Also the owner responded to my google review by accusing me of making the stylist feel "unsafe." The same stylist who had me get my phone out while I was in the chair, look up her personal instagram, follow her, and told me to reach out to her on there to book a lowlight to fix my hair. Very strange thing to do with someone you feel "unsafe with." Accusing me of making the stylist feel unsafe and trying to shame me into deleting my review rather than just admitting they handled this situation poorly and didn't have the ability to deliver or fix their mistakes just underscores my experience.

The intimacy and friendliness of this place reminds me of truvy's hair sop in steel magnolias, only with a funky authentic portland flair.
