Pleasantly surprised at how cute it is inside and the food was great. We ordered rainbow poke over salad no rice. The fish and veggies were all very fresh and tasty. The tonkotsu ramen was rich and full flavored. My only negative was the tonkotsu was a bit salty. I add some of my water to tone it down. As for the hot chili oil I ordered on the side .... Once it hit the back of my throat I started to choke... it was hot! Definitely coming back with my sister they have hot and cold sake!

Super clean, contemporary Asian restaurant. It has a real minimalist feel like a Korean cafe. It felt super chill to walk into. The food is all Japanese-style. You have poke bowls. We got the rainbow poke, which had lots of salmon, tuna, and avocado in addition to a number of veggies. Not on the menu was also a good amount of mango for a hit of sweetness. It was all high quality. It was a huuuuge bowl, too. Definitely worth the $18 considering how much similar quality bowls would go for. There are bento entrees. We got the chicken katsu curry bento, which had a solid portion of chicken katsu with a simple, yet flavorful, Japanese curry along with miso soup, a salad, fried dumplings, and rice. It was a healthy portion of food, and I had to take home half of the chicken and rice. There are also a number of appetizers, donburis (rice bowls), and ramen. The Japanese-style cheesecake for dessert was light, inexpensive, and a good way to end the meal. Not too sweet, iykyk. The family that runs this place is super sweet. They were friendly, attentive, and timely. This would be a great place for a more casual date or a solid bulk meal for all the food you get.

Umai appears to have recently opened, and it is an excellent addition to the area. Super clean and layback. My boyfriend and I were looking for a light lunch that still offered bold, unique flavors, so we decided to try this new-to-us Japanese restaurant. The service was prompt, with our food arriving ten minutes after ordering. I ordered a bento box, which I found to be a great value given the generous portion size. The chicken katsu was tender and juicy, with a well-seasoned, flavorful crust. The bento included a wide variety of items, making it a very satisfying meal. My boyfriend ordered the donburi bowl. While enjoyable, we felt it did not offer the same level of value as the bento box. Overall, the bento boxes provide the best balance of portion size and price. The little barbecue-style sauce that came with my bento was amazing on the chicken, enhancing the overall flavor of the dish. I would certainly return to Umai in the future when I am in the mood for Japanese cuisine.

First off the place is super clean and minimal decor. The service is a A+. She was attentive, professional, and made the place feel upscale. It has a very simple menu with some great options from eel to poki, sashimi, and ramen. The fish tasted fresh and soup had lots of flavor. Overall ill come again.

So excited we finally got to try Umai. Cute restaurant with lots of seating. We had such a great experience! We had the Shrimp Tempura Bento box and Spicy Miso Ramen with edamame appetizer. The food was delicious! There were a lot of menu choices. Fast and attentive service. Can't wait to come back!

First time trying this restaurant. We went after lunchtime, and it was empty. The atmosphere was clean and spacious. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen and asked for it spicy, even though it's not listed as an option on the menu, the server kindly offered it. We also ordered egg rolls as an appetizer, which came out fresh and crunchy.

The chicken katsu was fine, nothing special, just fine. What killed our experience was that the teriyaki chicken tasted microwaved.

Five Stars -- A Must‑Try in Downtown Salem!…read more My wife and I stopped by Akai Ramen yesterday, and this spot absolutely delivered. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, hot gemai tea, cucumbers, fresh salad, and the seafood ramen -- every single dish came out flavorful, balanced, and clearly made with care. The portions were generous, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable for the quality. The service was immaculate from start to finish. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming -- the kind of hospitality that makes you want to come back before you've even left. The decor is clean and modern with plenty of seating, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for a date, a family meal, or a quick bite. Yes, you do have to pay for parking in downtown Salem, but once you're inside, the food, the vibe, and the service make it more than worth it. If you're anywhere near Salem, I highly recommend stopping by. Akai Ramen is doing everything right -- great food, great people, great experience. Five stars all day.

I know firsthand how challenging it can be for small business owners--especially immigrant-owned businesses. That said, there were several shortcomings that affected our experience. The issues started when ordering. There were two vegetarians in our group, and while many of the ramen dishes listed an option to add vegetables, I wanted to confirm whether the broth itself was vegetarian. Unfortunately, our server repeatedly said she didn't know and didn't offer to check with the kitchen. One ramen listed a miso broth, which is typically vegetarian, but when I asked about that specifically, I received the same response. To be safe, we ordered the clearly labeled vegetarian ramen, while my husband ordered the miso ramen. His dish arrived almost immediately, while the rest of us waited at least 15 minutes longer. When his ramen was delivered, there was no explanation or indication that ours was coming shortly. He tried to eat slowly so we could eat together, but he was nearly finished by the time our bowls arrived. One other small but noticeable issue: it was around Christmas, and the holiday music playlist was extremely limited. We heard the same songs rotate four times, which became a bit distracting. My advice would be to invest more in server training, especially around menu knowledge, and perhaps update the music playlist. With some improvements in service and attention to detail, this place could be much better.

It was a small little restaurant with only five tables and the bar, but we were seated quickly. The food was pretty average, but the real issue was waiting for the order. We were seated at 7:19pm and last call was 8:30pm so we thought we had plenty of time. Boy were we wrong. Our first order came pretty quickly at 7:30pm. We finished pretty quickly because we were so hungry. We ordered immediately. The next order didn't come out until 8:07pm. A whole half hour. At that point we were still hungry so we ordered immediately after we finished because it was last call, but we were disappointed. We saw other people who place their order after us get their food before us. It's like they purposely try to stall until last call for people who do the AYCE. Their food also wasn't the best quality for their price. Unfortunately as excited as we were before coming in, we won't be back.
