We ordered from the Premium package $34 and enjoyed all of our choices; beef Kalbi, beef and chicken bulgogi, teriyaki chicken, spicy chicken. We had five panchan (sides) and 2 of three sauces. They forgot the oil and salt. Servings are 3 types per round and will be proportional to the number of ppl at your table. For 2 ppl a serving of kalbi is one piece each. Our server checked on us often and brought our requests efficiently, I asked and heard that even on busy nights the service is good. Sat right away the place was clean and the decor was really cool been to korean bbq before this one looks really new. All you can eat you can choose from 3 different price points each one has more items to pick from I did the middle. The meat came out fast and was delicious and the sides I loved which is unlimited with rice. Got japchae noodles my favorite. Was so full at the end so be sure u dont over order I think they charge for excessive meat left. Love it gonna come back for more waitress was so sweet and friendly. Been to this location twice now - It's pretty good! The first time it seemed like drinks took forever, the second time drinks were out before our food was. The first time we picked standard but moved up to premium and ended up just doing premium the second time too. All the meat was delicious, very flavorful and good cuts of meat. Drinks were delicious. Banchan was yummy as well, I just wish they had refilled them more often. Although it is a "do it yourself" type of place, it feels like unless your meat is all on the grill you'll struggle to find your waiter for anything else. We came to the restaurant in a party of 11, and were seated at a large table with several stoves to cook on. Our server was great. Very attentive and responded to the slightest wave. We ordered the Premium package, and were generally very happy with it. The different beef meats we ordered were all very good. Hawaiian beef was by far the favorite of all at our table. Brisket was pretty good, but kind of plain. The others were very good. Chickens were great, too. My only complaints were these: 1. Everyone at the table has to order the same package. I understand (kind of) the reasoning for this. It's to keep people from sharing with others who might have ordered a different package. However, some more adventurous diners might want some of the more exotic foods that aren't available in the standard or premium packages. 2. The vegetable dishes were pretty tiny. You can order more, as the packages are all-you-can-eat, but they don't come with much by default. 3. The shrimp comes with tails, shells, heads, and legs. Yuck!!! For the price of the food, the shrimp should be ready to cook and eat. We will go back again some day, but it won't be a regular place due to the pretty high prices. read more

During my business trip to Portland, I began to crave Korean food. As a Korean American who grew up in Koreatown Los Angeles, I'd like to believe that I can differentiate good Korean restaurants from the bad. And Kkoki falls under the category of good. Let me explain why: 1. As a KBBQ establishment, the quality of their meat is above average. I ordered the family meal combo #2 with brisket, rib eye, pork belly, and pork jowl. They don't allow AYCE (all you can eat) for people dining alone so I had to go with a family combo. 2. Their bean paste stew 된장찌개 tasted perfect and I asked for it extra spicy 3. Rib eye was very tender. Brisket was uncomplainable. Pork Jowl was so good and pork belly was mediocre. 4. Service was great and I received Korean level customer service so I tipped him $20 for my meal. I'm in Portland for another week so will try to visit this place again before I fly back to California. read more

This was, without question, the worst Korean BBQ AYCE experience I've ever had. First, the rules make no sense: no matter how many people are at the table, each round is limited to only three items. If it's truly "all you can eat," why can't we repeatedly reorder the dishes we actually like? The meat quality was already mediocre, and yet they still ration it every round like it's some premium cut. Second, the first two tiers of the menu are mostly pork and chicken, and the quality was poor. The only difference with the most expensive tier was adding beef tongue and a few frozen seafood items--absolutely not worth the price. It felt like a huge upsell for very little value. Lastly, the service was awful. I understand a restaurant can be busy and food might come out slowly, but our server didn't refill our water even once during the entire meal. Since I only wanted to order what I actually enjoyed, I didn't always use all three item slots (am I supposed to order things I don't want just to "fill" the round?). Instead of being helpful, the server repeatedly--and rudely--asked if we were sure we weren't going to order all three items, as if we were being difficult. For an AYCE restaurant, this kind of restrictive policy and attitude is unacceptable. I paid nearly $40 and somehow still left hungry because they rushed us out at last call. I will never come back. This is quite the hot spot in Salem. Located conveniently near the shopping mall we decided to stop in. The staff does a great job of explaining how it works. They bring you the meat, you cook it at your table with your own burner at the table. It's a great set up. They bring you the veggies and rice which you can have as much as you want for the base price of $27.95. They come back and check on you frequently. We got there about 5:30 and it was pretty empty. It was very full when we left around 7:00. It looks like they had beer and wine. As well as soft drinks. No take out allowed. All in all a good time. We learned a lot about the different foods. They all stated they were way too sweet to enjoy. A tip for cooking the meats, make sure your waiter increases the gas to high, to cook the food. What happened at Kkoki Salem? It has literally been our favorite place for several years. We always do birthdays, events and date nights there. Great food and really fun servers. Went last night and every server looked upset. We had to ask several times for drinks or other things. Did they get a new manager? The vibe and service has totally changed. Usually that tells me management is bad and making servers who used to enjoy their job want to quit. I hope they fire whoever caused this. Food was good but their rules on ordering meat plates was disappointing and ridiculous. We had a group of 7 and sat us at a table with two burners. The rules were explained, three plates at the time but even though you have separate burners the three plates had to be the same for the whole table? What? So one half of the group wanted shrimp and the other half didn't eat shrimp but the whole table had to get shrimp. Stupid! One half of the group wanted spicy beef, the other didn't like spicy but the whole table had to get spicy beef. I did not have the bbq, so I cannot speak to that. I ordered a few things from other parts of menu, and have to say that I was quite disappointed in all of them. First of all the steamed egg. I was expecting Chinese or Japanese style egg where the egg was silky and smooth. I don't know if Korean steamed egg is meant to be over cooked like this, but it's was very honey comb like and not smooth at all. Flavor was ok though. Seafood pancake was very very greasy and dense. And the only seafood in there were tiny shrimp and mussels. When I say tiny, I meant tiny - like the size of my pinky fingernail. Looks like the cheapest frozen seafood mix they could find. Tofu stew was just off. Usually Korean tofu soup use soft tofu. These were not soft, but also has the texture of scramble eggs. The seafood in there is probably from the same mix as the pancake. Tiny tiny tiny shrimps and mussels. Giving it two stars because the service was nice. read more

While teaching in Salem, OR our team of instructors dined here one evening. We were seated almost as soon as we walked through the front door. I have not been to a Korean BBQ restaurant before, unless you want to count one in Hong Kong about 50 years ago. The server explained the process to us in "broken English." I have a hearing deficit, so the other instructors had to explain the process to me . Once we made a selection it took only a couple of minutes for the raw meats and vegetables to arrive. There was good selection of beer/ales on tap in the bar area, where we had been seated. Back to the food; every time we finished what we had cooked the server was back asking what else we would like. She changed the cooking top/grill every time. The food was very good and the server received a tip that was substantial. Her service was exceptional. The only negative was I ordered a noodle dish "to go" for my wife. She had a major sinus headache and did not want to go out this night. The noodles were "greasy." Her system did not tolerate them well the next morning. This would have been a 5 Star review if not for the noodles. We will be back in Salem in August, and plan on dining here. This time it will be my wife and I. No Noodles. Bottom line: I would recommend this establishment. read more

At around $30 per person, and no solo seatings, you better have a friend who's just as hungry for protein as you. Assuming you have such a friend, though, and want to splurge a bit paying a premium for the experience and the variety, kkoki is great food at a reasonable price. Being traditional American Korean barbeque, you order raw meat courses and cook them yourself using provided tongs on a covered gas grill that takes up the center of the table. Vegetarian options exist, but are limited... I wouldn't recommend it if that's your diet. However, there are plenty of fish and poultry options. All that said, here are my top picks and top misses: Don't bother with the shrimp (peel and eat - too much work in situ and not particularly well selected) and don't get tricked into overindulging on the complimentary rice. The brisket, honey chicken, and skirt steak are also totally skippable, though not offensive in any way. The must tries are the short ribs (any variety) the bulgolgi (beef and pork in particular), the chili pork loin (not spicy, just flavorful as anything), the pork jowl (trust me, even if you think you won't like it, you will) and for the potentially more adventurous, the soy squid. 4/5. Price could do with a bit of knocking down, even for all you can eat, but the short ribs are almost worth it alone. read more

This review will be short and sweet since I am sure all of you have been to a Korean BBQ before so you know the drill. This review is for this location. Food was fresh and awesome tasting. Don't let the amount of cars in the lot determine how busy it is inside. There were a small amount of cars in the lot (maybe three at the most) so we thought the place would be dead. We were wrong. Korean K-Pop videos and music filled the room, and there was a good amount of tables taken up. The atmosphere was very conducive for Korean BBQ Table was clean and grill was spotless. The one negative is that one of our plates had dried food on it so that was a small downer. Tip of the day: Don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach. I hate wasting food and we were hungry and ordered three items per round. What we should have done is order as little as possible and order more if needed. We ordered two rounds of three items each and we were STUFFED! Not one to waste food, we pushed through and ate everything we ordered. All in all, a great experience and will visit again if I am in the area and super hungry. read more

We've gone to the Portland location many times and it's been great and a great selection of choices for the cheapest package. This place though is the complete opposite. This is my second time eating Korean BBQ. It was quite a unique experience. I enjoyed most of it. The cuts of meat were excellent and the all you can eat was quite interesting. I do think it was a little expensive but not terrible. What I didn't like was how hard it is to figure out how to get the shrimp meat out! It just ended up being a difficult task, that ended in mutilated exoskeleton mess, head 'juice' squirting everywhere and shrimp poop debacle. All that for two bites of what was somewhat left.
