Really really good. Being from the city I can't believe that one of the best sushi places I've been to is in Squamish lol. Who knew. Due to covid it is take out only but there are three small tables outside to eat your takeout in. They will bring you water which is nice. We got the Kalbi meal which had excellently flavoured tender short ribs and salad and rice and miso soup My boyfriend got the spicy battered chicken which also was excellently flavoured. I am seriously so impressed with this sushi restaurant that I went to in Squamish on our way to Whistler! It was fresh fish with a really good price with really friendly service! We got a bunch of things to share - the spicy salmon roll, spicy salmon sashimi, atlantic salmon sashimi, seeweed salad, tuna toro nigiri, pork gyoza, spicy tuna roll and the mango ice cream for dessert. All of this ended up being only $20 per person! The fish was so fresh, thick and juicy and seriously made my day! =) The seaweed salad was served in a martini glass which was really cool. The servers also gave us miso soup on the house which was really nice. The spicy salmon sashimi was doused in way too much hot sauce so I might not get that one again and I wasn't impressed with their tuna toro nigiri compared to other ones I have tried but everything else was super yummy! Literally the best restaurant in Squamish! Visited Squamish for a friend's wedding and craved some Asian food. Honestly didn't expect much given I am Korean and am used to amazing Asian food in NYC, but was so pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of the food here. This one is probably the most authentic Japanese restaurant in town. They serve good food with good presentation. :) I personally love their takoyaki and salmon bento. Traveling from Whistler to YVR to catch our flight back to Santa Barbara, we stopped at Umai for lunch. We checked Yelp to confirm they had decent reviews and went in. The waitress/hostess was very friendly and the food was not only delicious but the care and attention to the display detail was incredible. I ordered the Las Vegas Roll and the Dragon Roll. Unlike some sushi restaurants that deliver small rolls with little fish, Unami's rolls were large with good quality ingredients, not to mention beautifully served; it was like art! I believe the sushi chef was female which I don't encounter often in the US; she should be recognized get a raise!! If I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely be back. I live upstairs and I'd still rather walk or drive for better sushi in Squamish. All the reviews raving about this place clearly know nothing about real Japanese food. The reviewer who called this the most authentic Japanese food in town made me literally laugh out loud. Umai is owned and operated by KOREANS. Completely different cultures and food styles. Their attempt at Japanese food is disappointing. They don't do enough volume for their fish to stay fresh, so they freeze, thaw, and refreeze their fish, which from a sushi standpoint, is downright unacceptable (not to mention not very foodsafe for raw consumption). When you eat their raw fish and taste that watery texture with that cardboard flavour, you'll know that your fish is NOT good. Don't even get me started on their oyakodonburi and katsudon. It's offensive to proper Japanese cuisine. Lunch is cheap and their Korean food is pretty decent. For the life of me, I don't know why they don't just stick to what they know. Squamish could use a banging Korean restaurant! read more

The sushi wasn't great and my server charged me 5$ to change a Cali roll to a salmon avocado roll. I would be more understanding if the roll had any salmon in it, it was basically an avocado rice roll. If you're thinking of getting sushi just go across the street to sushi sen. Decent sushi and good service. I enjoy this place. They could add a few things to the menu but other than that they are pretty decent place to eat. Not usually packed like other places in Squamish so it's easy to get a seat and you don't run into everyone you know. If our family eats out and Sushi is the choice of the evening, we go to Umai!! The staff are always friendly and attentive but also allow you to enjoy your meal without being in your face. They don't make you feel like you are being rushed out the door. The food is second to none. Everything I have seen out of the kitchen is spectacular in taste and presentation. I have never had anyone tell me they would never go back. The ambiance is much better than other places nearby. I always have a hard time hearing when in crowded restaurants and this place is large enough to feel open but small enough that it isn't loud and overwhelming. Their price-point is where it should be. They may be slightly higher than the place around the corner, but as above, I will pay an extra dollar to be able to hear the people across from me and enjoy the company. It may sound odd but I love the sliced orange that they bring at the end of your dinner to cleanse your palette. I highly recommend their Sashimi dinners. My wife always gets a soup (numerous choices) and hasn't complained yet. Both of my kids love their avocado rolls. If you have children they will cut the peices smaller to fit in their mouths if asked. read more

I ordered the chirashi sushi dinner -- the test to see if you'll get the freshest, best choices or if you'll get scraps and the cheaper pieces. Well the chef at Umai clearly has pride in his work! We were there after a night of partying in whistler. We wanted some brothy food to cure our hangover, and this place did it for us! The udon was very clean tasting and lots of veggie. I would go back again if I'm in whistler or Squamish area again and craving Japanese food. NOTE: they charge $1.5 for tea per person. A little disappointed after reading the reviews. Wanted to stop at a different sushi place in Squamish on our way back down from whistler but it was closed for weekend lunch. Found this place based on yelp and found the portions extremely generous but sushi was average. we mistakenly ordered the house roll not knowing it was a "Korean style" roll. My husband was a bit thrown off by it and I'm personally not a fan of Korean sushi rolls. The customer service and ambience was great though. read more

We thought the review from JT was an anomaly, but he/she was absolutely right!! The food was "meh"...and yes, if I were him I'd walk somewhere else. The problems: 1) the soy sauce was WAY watered down - awful....and why????? 2) the daikon that typically is served with sashimi (and sometimes sushi) was terrible - I swear it was previously frozen,...it had zero flavor 3) the lobster roll (one of their "special rolls" that had lobster and crab) barely had lobster in it,...but that really was not the problem, just thought I'd mention it,...here's the kicker: even though they said there was crab in it, it was all imitation crab. Why describe the roll "with lobster and crab" when there is no crab in it?? 4) the beer I ordered was barely cold. I had to ask for ice to put the bottle in because they had no cold beer. We won't do it, ever. We won't come back. Please, please, please take my word for it. Go somewhere else in Squamish or this area for sushi,...anywhere. The 2 stars were for the presentation...but you really can't put lipstick on a pig. read more

This is the second time in Squamish, but first time in Umai sushi. Excellent food and very nice presentation. Very impressed really!!

First time trying this place and I will have to say it was great. The flavors were amazing not only in the main dishes I have taken pictures of, but also surprisingly in the small salad that came with the meals. The dressing, which when asked what kind it was, was a secret family recipe. The California Rolls and Dynamite Rolls we're good as well even though the Dynamite Rolls fell apart. Passing through on the way back from Whistler and we stopped off. We had 6 people and they quickly accommodated us. The decor was very cute and the lovely waitress and the sushi chef were fast. We all ordered lunch combos which came with miso soup and salads. The soups and salads were yummy (especially the miso soup) and I enjoyed a pot of green tea. The sushi came quickly and everyone enjoyed it. We all had nice things to say about the food and service, and the pricing was very reasonable ($100.00 for 6 people who ordered full meals). Definitely recommend and wish it were in Vancouver itself so we could frequent it whenever we come up! read more

Food is not bad. Value is decent and presentation is very nice. The sushi wasn't bad but the teriyaki chicken dish was kinda bland. Waiter didn't understand that we wanted two cups for tea for a party of two. Waiter proceeded to discard my leftover rather than packing up my food.
