If you're looking for fresh sushi at the ATL airport, I'd steer clear of this place. I came for a late lunch on Sunday and was pretty hopeful to eat some fresh sushi as an alternative to the greasy and heavy fast food options available on the concourse. I was pretty disappointed. I ordered the unagi roll as it's a pretty basic roll--with the goal being to order something that would be difficult to mess up. Sadly, the flavors were lackluster and bland. The rice was too hot when they rolled it so the seaweed was rubbery and chewy. I really couldn't even discern the eel taste because the roll was drowning in eel sauce which overpowered whatever little flavor there was in the roll to begin with. Overall it was very, very underwhelming. Only pros were that the bartender was friendly and attentive which was great since I didn't want to sit around waiting too long. They have a few beers on draft which I enjoyed--not that it makes my experience that much better. Maybe the other dishes are better? I am glad to have found this restaurant in a sea of mediocre airport food. I get it. We don't go to the airports to try some of the best food we have ever eaten. We are just in transit and the times of getting on and off the airplane are unpredictable messing up with our gut clock as opposed to our sun clock. That alone could be a meal for someone and it was 100 on a scale of one to ten for volume, taste, health values compared to fries! Then the veggie roll didn't disappoint, with some squash, cucumber, thick avocado, and burdock roots!! I don't see burdock roots in some of the fancy sushi places and the price was reasonable. This is my favorite place to eat at ATL airport but the service is still so bad. Today, they had no server so the bartender Kelley had to do everything. She is great, definitely overworked. The Basics: Umaizushi is a sushi restaurant located in Gate C of the Atlanta airport. The restaurant has a sushi bar and some small tables. There is a sushi menu with a lot of options to choose from and they also have noodle bowls and other non- sushi dishes, as well. Things I like: For eating sushi in the airport, I was perfectly fine with my food. Not the best quality sushi I have ever had, but that's not necessarily my expectation when I'm waiting for a flight. I ate the Crunchy Spicy Tuna roll and the Umaizushi Tidal Wave roll and both were flavorful and enjoyable. Things I don't like: It is an open restaurant within the gate and is relatively small, so at times it can be difficult to acquire seating. Also, they are often busy and don't seem to be highly staffed, so the service isn't the best. I would only go here if I know I have time to spare while waiting for my flight. Let me preface this review by saying that I lower my expectations when I eat in airports. That said, I did not have a good experience. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen, and I do not recommend it. The noodles were extremely soft--no chewy bite--and tasted like cheap instant ramen you can buy at the grocery store for 35 cents. The broth wasn't terrible, but it was nothing to write home about (which is honestly what I expected it to be, so no real disappointment there). The egg was off--I don't know if it was rotten, but it tasted like a dirty kitchen rag and I had to spit it out into my napkin. The only positive was that my server was very friendly and she apologized about the egg and gave me a $1.50 discount. The ramen looks much better in my photo than it tastes. Super unimpressed with the food and the prices (based in the level of quality), but the service was very friendly and prompt. I got a great tip from a fellow Yelper and ordered my Hawaiian roll's sauce on the side (it was served up with TWO large sauce containers--cannot imagine all that sauce drowning a poor sushi roll). Also had the Rainbow roll (first time I've ever had one that did not include shrimp). All in all, the fish was okay, but the rice in both of my rolls was on the al dente side, and the paper used to wrap the rolls also seemed crunchy. I'm pretty sure today was the first time in my life that I failed to finish two rolls (it just wasn't very tasty). I went out on a limb and tried airport sushi...I should have known better. I tried one of the house specialties - Spanish Dynamite roll - which had a poor fish to rice ratio and wasn't spicy as advertised. The edamame, on the other hand, was delicious with a good amount of salt for additional flavor. Service was slow with only one waitress for the floor while the sushi chefs are standing around. I recommend that the restaurant start taking orders at the sushi bar to alleviate the waitress and enhance the dining experience. Sushi bar also wasn't designed for the enjoyment of watching the sushi be prepared. Good opportunities to charge your electronics while you dine. It has been over 15-minutes and I still don't have the check and she has not checked on me once. When the check came, I noticed there was a glass of water along with my food order even though the water did not have a charge. I asked her and she said an order can not go to the kitchen without a water (drink) on the ticket. Are you kidding!!! Charge it no charge is not the point, why does it have to show some type of additional service that was not requested or wanted. Horrible experience!! Alex the Manager came over and asked what can he do. I appreciated that, I really did appreciate the gesture. I explained to him that I am going to pay for the food and I just won't return. OVERVIEW Located in terminal C of the Atlanta airport, Umaizushi has a capacity of about forty people with room for about ten at the bar. It has a full menu of appetizers, sushi, and ramen and also offers wine, beer, and cocktails. THE SERVICE I walked in and was seated almost instantly. However, the server just handed me the menus and told me to find a seat. Quite odd. Everything was a bit slow but that's because it was pretty full. However, it took them about ten minutes to get me a glass of water that I asked for and twenty minutes for my food to arrive. THE FOOD I ordered almost five minutes later, opting for the Teishoku Take ($20), basically the set meal with three pieces of shrimp tempura, a California roll, choice of miso soup or a salad and three pieces of nigiri (salmon, tuna, and hamachi I think). The food came in a cute bento. There were pieces of parsley on top of the California roll and generous pieces of ginger and wasabi. The soup was standard miso, but had these odd soggy rice pop flakes in them and two large chunks of tofu. They could have gone without the rice pop chunks because it just got soggy and sunk to the bottom of my soup. The California roll is hard to do wrong, but somehow Umazushi was able to do so. The roll fell apart as I picked it up and the parsley did not compliment the tart crab nor the avocado. As for the nigiri, this was by far the most disappointing thing I've seen all day. The fish were pale in color and looked extremely dried out. I would usually be lenient on airport seafood but I've definitely had airport nigiri eons fresher than this. I first tried the white nigiri which I suspect is either hamachi or whitefish. It was unnervingly fishy and dry, a sign of very old fish. To make up for the undesirably fishy aftertaste, I doused the tuna nigiri in wasabi and soy sauce and it was still unsatisfying. I didn't even bother to touch the salmon. Plus the nigiri rice was very very starchy and not like any sushi rice I've ever tasted. It was also in the oddest shape (picture attached). The tempura was the the most subpar. It was very greasy and not even cooked in Panko in traditional Japanese fare. Instead the shrimp was coated in the thickest layer of oily batter to the point where I couldn't even taste the shrimp. I ate one whole piece and didn't bother to finish the rest. Overall I would rate this as a three given my expectations of airport food. However even given my low benchmark of airport food this place still ranks in the bottom. read more

I hardly ever post reviews, especially negative ones but this place literally left me annoyed even days after when I think about it. Not sure who the higher ups are at this place but they definitely need to re-evaluate who they have working for them. The entire team including management was absolutely terrible! I work in restaurant operations, and I felt like I was being punked. The bartender seemed inconvenienced by every guest who sat at the bar. Not once did she smile or have any sense of urgency. She clearly forgot to ring my appetizer in and when I asked about it after 30 minutes, she said "It should be out soon" then I watched her walk over to the POS and ring it in. I waited another 30 minutes when another guest noticed I still hadn't received anything. The bartender and manager seemed oblivious and definitely not phased when I asked to just cancel the app and close out. They just continued on with a personal conversation about their taxes. We tried the Rainbow roll and the Hawaiian roll. Hawaiian was definable the Better of the two but get both sauces on the side!! Neither was one I will ever crave again. Fish was almost mushy on the rainbow roll. The bartender (and waitress as she brought us EVERYTHING- ask for Kelley) was AMAZING. Personable and on the ball. She didn't miss a beat with anyone and the bar turned over fairly quickly except for us and one out we duo on my right. We made it thru security in like 10 minutes so had a good two hours to wait for our flight... The bartender made it easy for us to polish off not one but two bottles of wine. I was really craving for some hearty warm food. I didn't want the typical "fast food" type or "food court" type meal at the airport that day. Decided to try out this place since I love ramen. I kinda stood around because there's no hostess stand, I didn't know if I go to the bartender to see where I sit or to the sushi bar or just sit myself? It was pretty confusing... I ended up sitting at the bar because there didn't look like there was a server for the people that were sitting at the tables. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen with a side of beer. It was okay, not great. But just enough to fulfill my want for something warm and hearty. I guess I also need to lower my standards because you are eating at an airport.
