The lamb gyro was disappointing and in fact inedible. The lamb pieces were so tough they were hard to chew. The toppings were few-2 cucumbers cubes, a piece of tomato and some olive halves. The sandwich itself had so much taziki sauce, it wilted the lettuce and made the sandwich hard to hold. We had to throw away two lamb gyro sandwiches. (Total value $34.00-$16.95 each). The falafel sandwich was finished due to a person's extreme hunger. It was for the most part, bland and dry as if it were made from a mix. (Trader Joe?) The cuisine was not worth the price we paid and it was at the high end for gyro sandwiches that are found in other cities. We ordered at the counter, and sat down at a table by the window. About 10 min later the food came out and was fantastic. I got the chicken tikka masala platter w/ hummus. The hummus is good. Thick and tasty, not too much garlic, well blended. The chicken and rice were really good together. Chicken was good quality, and the rice was very flavorful. My wife got the falafel wrap and stuffed grape leaves and enjoyed them both. Her mom got the lamb which she really enjoyed. The service was decent; everyone in there was kind. We were really underwhelmed by the food. We tried chicken tikka, lamb, and beef, as well as hummus and eggplant dips. None of the proteins were tender. The lamb and beef were very chewy, some pieces not even edible. The chicken was overcooked, even in sauce. The salad was very basic. This was an order for multiple people. we order 2 salads. two dips, 2 wraps . First off they shorted us pita for the salads . The hummus and baba ghanoush would not recommend. My falafel veggies were fresh but the falafel itself were not warm and tasted stale/out dated .The gyro that someone ordered seem to be good . Grape leafs were ok . We were not given any silver ware to eat with . When I called to talk to someone about the order I was told the didn't understand. I loved the aloo chat and the lentil soup (although it needed salt). The vegan baklava was bad- it was crushed into pieces and lacked sweetness, so it was just a few philo pastry sheets separated from the filling. This restaurant is quaint. The inside is decorated beautiful, very warm and inviting. The staff is very friendly. The lady who served us explained menus items to us, made suggestions and even informed us about a special that they were running. With everything that we ordered, I was surprised by how reasonable the total was. Our order was ready in no time and with the wonderful aromas escaping the bag, we couldn't get home fast enough to dig in! I've been back a few times since my first review and I like Umami more and more. The offers are a unique, but delicious melange of Lebanese and Indian/Pakistani. Why yes, you can order some chicken tikka masala along with your shawarma. In my first review I noted that the sampler platters were a real deal. This is still the case, but I frankly prefer the vegan platter to the omnivore one. We opt for the veggie kebab and chana masala. It comes with falafel (which might still be our favorite part) and you can add more for only $5. A real bargain. You can also add a chicken kebab for about $8 too. It is still a very moist and flavorful option. Sauces - The baba ganoush was good - not too creamy, but with a very strong tahini punch! The hummus was also very tasty - hope you like garlic! Tzatziki - cool and refreshing. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Umami has been offering takeout and when we last ordered, gave a 10% discount to all takeout orders. The staff was very friendly and the place was quiet and inviting. It is very small, however. Only two tables so I recommend takeout. I had the chicken kabab wrap and it was fantastic! Lean all-white chicken and excellent flavor. I also had the Vegan chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Equally fantastic! You'd never know it was vegan. I've gotten food to go here several times. Each time, order is 100% correct, freshly made with quality ingredients, and delicious. I love the chicken gyro. The falafel is really good too. The naan bread, warm and fresh, the hummus, everything was delishhhhh! So, now that you know all of that, It will explain why I went back today with my better half, and ordered the same thing X 2. A client, a colleague and I came here for lunch on 4/26. My client picked the restaurant based on a positive review from a friend of his. Being that this was my first time here, I was very impressed. The restaurant is located in Catonsville not too far from 695. There are parking meters along the street in front of the restaurant. There is also a nearby shopping center with ample parking as well. Inside is very cozy and would be perfect for an intimate meal with a friend or loved one. It was also the perfect spot for a business lunch. There are 10 to 12 two top tables throughout which was nice. Our waitress was Amanda who was excellent! She took great care of us and made sure that we enjoyed our experience. She explained that everything from the kitchen is organic and farm fresh as well. As I've mentioned in previous reviews, I like the farm to table trend a lot. The food just tastes better to me. The menu is made up of Mediterranean and Global fusion dishes. I really like Mediterranean food so this place is right up my alley. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala which was "mouth wateringly" good! The chicken was SO tender and delicious, the rice was perfect and the Naan was excellent! My meal was so good that I'll be measuring every place else's Chicken Tikka Masala against Umami's. Umami is my new CTM bar! The first time I tried to order from here they were booked and busy and weren't taking anymore orders. Luckily I was finally able to try this place. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma wrap. Ummm...it was okay. I love chicken shawarma and have tried it from many different places. Unfortunately, the chicken chunks were big and under seasoned. I also ordered extra sauce when I placed my order which was through an app. I forgot which one but I guess the app I ordered through doesn't include your notes because my extra sauce was forgotten. It was an extra $.50 which was fine I just didn't bring my wallet with me. I could of used the extra sauce!! Overall it was good and would order again. Although, it's very cute and cozy. You can find angle parking on the side of the building. Parking could be tight if a lot of people are in the area, since the parking lot is not just for the restaurant. For my first visit, I kept it simple and ordered an entrée and veggie samosas, the Tandoori Salmon Filet. I got mine with brown rice and naan. When I tell you that my food was so delicious. The rice was fragrant and citrus-y, like they added just a tad bit of lemon juice..not too much, just the right amount. I chose my salmon to be cooked well done. It was moist and done with perfection. The naan was soft and cut into 4 triangles. Nice! The veggie samosas were just as delicious. Five samosas came with the order. They were fried not too hard and were a bit spicy but not too spicy. On my second visit, I ordered the same entrée but added a different appetizer - Aloo Chaat, which is chickpeas cooked with potatoes and topped with yogurt sauce and corn tortillas. Oh my gosh!! This is my favorite!! I could've ordered just that and would have been satisfied. This is the "IT" place, for me, in Baltimore County. I got the chicken shwarma wrap which was ~$9. It was smaller than I expected but it still left me satisfied. The wrap itself was actually very delicious. The chicken was well cooked, the veggies were fresh, and I loved the sauce. The only complaint I have is I wish they put more in the bread, I felt the ratio was 1:3 with bread. I keep trying to find Indian restaurants to fall in love with for delivery ever since I moved to Catonsville with no luck. The positives: prices are low for a meal size portion. The delivery service was quick and arrived in less than 30 minutes. The reasons I didn't fall in love: the chicken tikka masala was bland and like bad finely crushed salsa that had curdled with the yogurt. The palak paneer had no flavor- spinach and potatoes & cheese. I haven't found babaganoush since I lived in the city and was so excited, but yet again flavorless. The strangest thing was the basmati rice normally is a white color with fresh herbs and this tasted like yellow rice a roni which I haven't had since I was a kid. We've been coming to Umami for several years, primarily for the great food, and also to support a small, local business. There used to be some great values like the sampler platter and family dinner. Recently, though, the prices have gone up a bit, and the portion sizes have decreased. The family platter now has you select two sides (from the hummus, babaganoush, and stuffed grape leaves), rather than coming with all three like it had for years. The chicken tikka masala now comes with a choice of a side, but a also much smaller portion of tikka masala. The tikka masala sauce itself was a chunky, brownish yellow, rather than the traditional creamy red sauce. It tasted more like a curry though. The small container was packed with grilled chicken, but very little sauce. Tikka masala is primarily about the sauce, so tonight was a definite miss on both flavor and portion. The grape leaves and falafel were fairly tiny as well. It sounded like Rehan was having some difficulties in the kitchen due to lack of staff this evening, which may account for some of this. Hopefully, this was just an off night, and he can resolve the staff shortage and bring things back up to standard in the near future. read more
