I was driving back from Baltimore to the Fredericksburg, VA area on a weekday and was really interested in enjoying some Pakistani food (not Indian, nor Persian, and definitely not Afghan) - I searched and saw there were lots of reviews (hundreds) on social media for this place, so I stopped in. It's not too far off the highway, so it was easy to get to. The inside was really dingey and rundown (but don't let this bother you, you're there for the food!) and there was a laminated menu on the counter to look at... The couple that runs it was there and the guy was friendly and helpful. I was in the mood for karahi, but I was by myself and typically restaurants make this for two people, so he suggested I get chicken curry. It took about 10 mins to make. First thing I did was taste the broth (the curry sauce) and it was spot on - AMAZING!!! Then I ripped into the naan and took to ripping chicken of the bone and enjoying... I scarfed that dish down in no time, and there was quite a bit there! The basmati that came with it was very tasty! And he brought me a ramakin of yogurt chutney (this is how chutney is supposed to be!) - it was fresh and soothed the spice of the dish. Regarding the spice level, he asked how I wanted it and I told him I was Pakistani to make it for me the same way he'd eat it and they got is right! Naan was excellent! Perfectly cooked, but the dough was great! Nice texture and flavor to it! Overall - I enjoyed my lunch and would come back! Huge fan of Punjab Kabab & Sweets! This small family-owned and -operated Pakistani eatery offers various appetizers, biryani, curries, kababs, and even vegetarian options. I am a huge fan of their vegetable samosas, as they are super large, fried nicely, and chock-full of potatoes, veggies, and a wonderful blend of spices; it is a little spicy, though! Their Butter Chicken is thick and creamy, with large chunks of juicy chicken breast; their Karahi Chicken is spicy, but the bone-in and the boneless chicken is plentiful and the sauce is super flavorful and yummy. The naan is made-to-order, as it should be, and hot, fluffy, and wonderful to dip in the sauces. Don't miss out on their homemade desserts - their kheer is SO SO SO good, and probably one of the best I've had! So creamy and a lovely combination of the rose water, the cardamom, and slices of almonds - really addicting! The family here are super friendly, kind, so lovely! Over and over, I have found the best place for delicious desi food is not your high-end Indian restaurants that are not catered to the desi diaspora instead, the best places are hole in the wall, Pakistani/Desi restaurants, where the service is counter, but the food is out of this world delicious. Baltimore was nowhere on our horizon. We were headed to Boston. Baltimore was only a quick 30 min stop to unload passengers on our flight and load new passengers, but that quick stop ended up being more than a 6-hour saga, and our flight ended up being canceled. We had to scramble to find a hotel and a place to eat. We wanted comfort. We enjoy delicious desi food, so we were delighted our search led to Punjab Kabab and Sweets. As I mentioned, the place is a hole in the wall, but the food is delicious. Everything from Palak Paneer to Goat Biryani to Chicken Tikka platter to Chicken Korma was delicious. This food is authentic. It is as if a treasured grandmother cooked it. It is always consistently cooked. It is fresh, hot, and delicious. The service is friendly and the wait is not long. My favorites are the sesame naan, butter chicken (in a creamy spicy red sauce), meat briyani (spiced rice), samosas, mash daal ( spiced golden lentals) Bihari (stewed meat), and gojar kheer (sweet shredded carrot and rice pudding desert). First, but not last, visit to Punjab Kabab! A little hole in the wall on the Main Street in Arbutus. Dining area is sparse but clean. Can smell the spice while they cook which makes it hard to wait for the food - smells so good. The chicken tikka masala with basmati rice was delicious. The chicken was tender and spicy. The sauce was also tasty and was also spicy but not overwhelming. The palak paneer was also flavorful. Spicy with a little kick but you can taste cinnamon too. Came to this establishment after reading good reviews. The place is a hole in the wall, that looks like it could use an update, it's a bit of a turn off. The counter is an old refrigerated case, that was barely filled and what was in there may have been old. I got the last of the rice dessert but I can't comment on it because I didn't eat it. I placed my order then waited until it was ready. Took approximately 20 minutes. We ordered chicken byriani, butter chicken and naan The portion sizes were small for the price (compared to other restaurants). The spice level was high, I didn't mind but someone who wasn't warned may. Also there was hardly any chicken in the byriani. I wish this place was better, I like to support local businesses, but not when they don't deliver with taste and value. Won't be returning unfortunately. read more

Coming from Chicago, I have yet to find similar spice balance we have on Devon Avenue or on Orleans St where all the cab drivers meet, eat and pray on the regular. A hint of clove, cardamom and tender chicken in the Butter Chicken. Until I found this place. The Chicken Karahi was my favorite in Chicago and most places out here don't even carry it. Both my wife and sons felt this was the best Butter Chicken they have had in the 7 years we have lived her and in the 13 different restaurants we have tried. The Karahi is not for the weak or heat sensitive palate, but it is truly authentic, delicious. You feel like it's homemade because it is. Fresh Naan, fresh Roti and authentic flavored rice, not the plain white stuff 90% of the restaurants we frequented used. It's a 30 minute drive for us 50 minutes on Friday afternoons, twice the time as our regular spots, but there is nary a complaint by any in the family when I say I will be home win 90 minutes with dinner. Stopped in to order some take-out on a Saturday night. The restaurant is very small and modest, with simple decor. When you walk in, you're greeted with a friendly smile. Ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan, and Beef Kababs. When we received our food, I had a hard time trying not to eat it in the car on the way home. It smelled delicious, and tasted even better. The meat was flavorful, and the rice was fluffy and delicate. The Naan was great to dip in the sauce from the Tikka Masala. I ordered the Lamb Biryani, which was a large portion. I was very happy with it. My brother liked his Chicken Tikka Masala, but the portion was small and it didn't come with rice. I gave him some of mine. The restaurant is small. I would recommend take out over dine in. The staff was kind and friendly. I did not realize this place was in Arbutus. I have been driving 10 miles from my house to come here at least weekly. I have found this place to be the most authentic of all the kabob and pakistani food in the baltimore area. And to top it off the owner is not only a great chef but really kind and not stingy with the food. I have easily paid 50% more for food with subpar quality in other restaurants. Definitely try their veggie options as well. Amazong how authentic the spices and cooking is. You simply can't go wrong and if you have to drive a bit to get here it will be worth it. Seating area has about 2 smaller tables and a larger table for about 6 people. But take away is what most customers do here as do I. This place is truly a dive, like what Emily L said. I mean, it seems like it's been through both World Wars and THEN the Korean War. No disrespect to those who served in those wars, this was just used as a... Metaphor. The place is owned and operated by 1 person. That being said, if he has 1 person before you, make sure you got time because I had 2 guys in front of me and it took 45 minutes before I got my food. Yes, 45 minutes. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Palak Paneer. I waited outside for 20 minutes then sat inside. They were all talking loudly while looking at the TV. The TV was displaying some sport people were playing which looked like baseball, except a foreign kind. Then it started getting louder to the point where i thought they were arguing. But then a burst of laughter came out of all of them so I guess they were just passionate about the game. Phew. I finally got my food, put it in the car, went to Daniels Restaurant and ate there, then I went home. After all the time, I finally opened everything up and the portions were small. The 2 dishes were 18 dollars flat and I got 2 dishes that looked like handfuls. Gigantic handfuls, which isn't much. I was thinking to myself like WHAT THE... But the guy also gave me 2 HUGE pieces of Naan. I mean HUGE! And a small container of delicious rice. And before I knew it, everything was consumed. I ate a burger at Daniels and was just planning to have a taste of each dish then letting my sister have the rest when she came home.... Nope... The naan soaked the sauce from the Tikka perfectly resulting in a euphoric combination of texture and flavor, devoured, then transported into my belly. The Chicken was fantastic. I loved how it had some fat on it, giving it a more tastier flavor with the already rich flavor coming from the sauce and spices. I wasn't a big fan of the Palak Paneer though. It was just alright for me. Both dishes had a good amount of oil/grease so beware to those who're not fans of such! read more

We ordered late in the evening, so they had run out of all appetizers. They must be good; I'll have to come back to try them. We got a kebab platter and Mutter Paneer. There were only 6 small pieces of paneer, but lots of peas in a flavorful, spicy gravy. We ordered Rogni Nan and Garlic Naan, but i'm not sure that is what we got; there were 2 rather plain naan (maybe I missed the sesame seeds) and 1 garlic naan. So that means plain is 2/$1.50 and garlic is 1@$3.00. I enjoyed my dinner. If i'm in the area again I might come by earlier to try the samosas. read more

This place is pretty good! I'd been to Cactus Silvestre next door and both look a little divey, a bit hole-in-the-wall, but have good food to make up for it. My wife and I were the only ones dining in, but many picked up phoned orders. My butter chicken was okay; I felt it needed something. However, my wife's vegetable biryani was absolutely wonderful. And the freshly made naan went very well with both. And I loved washing it down with a mango lassi. The same person (owner?) who took our order also cooked for us. He quietly waited for my order, to the point that I wasn't sure he spoke English (he does, btw; he was just shy at first), then he set about cooking our meal to order. The inside's a little sparse: a picture or two on the walls, basic bathroom in the back. The TV was playing the Islamic equivalent of a televised Christian megachurch service, so that was interesting. After about 20 minutes, another worker switched it to Wimbledon tennis. It's been a few years since I visited this spot; was mostly pleased in my previous review. Not so much this visit. Another poster commented on the oily-ness of the dishes they ordered... AGREE!!!! Yet another poster noted "out of appetizers", same same in my recent order. Wasn't sure what I wanted and couldn't find a menu online so I stopped in on my way home from work. Located in super cute downtown Arbutus, the bar/restaurant and Mexican spot on either side seemed at least somewhat well attended. This spot has tattered window coverings and barely an enticing entrance. Oh well, don't judge a book...Wish I could say the interior was more inviting. It wasn't. Placed my order, will be ready in 20 mins or so. Great! Let the order taker know I'd be sitting outside (literally at the table outside of the door). After 25 mins popped back in to see if my order was ready. Oh, yeah, here ya go. As I was the only patron at the location (there was one other when I arrived but they'd since left), they couldn't have opened the door to let me know my order was ready?!!!?!! This seems petty, I know, but seriously?!?!? And no, there weren't tickets popping off for delivery and takeout with the staff in the weeds. Biryanis here are the best. They are bursting with all the spicy flavors that are expected from a biryani, yet light on the tummy. Biryani and the curries here are not too spicy, they are well balanced. I am a big fan of their naans. I had my first keema naan here. It was nothing less than excellent! In Maryland, it's a challenge to find a Pakistani owned, Pakistani restaurant serving Pakistani food such as kababs, roti, sweets, etc. Don't get me wrong, if you're looking for dessi (sub-continent) food in general, Maryland has a vast selection of Indian restaurants available, with the standard fare of chicken tikka masala, lamb kadahi, daal and whatnot, but if you're craving for that Pakistani style seekh kabab, tandoori roti or karahi, there aren't many places to go. With that in mind, on to the review! Punjab Kabab & Sweets is a Pakistani restaurant located in small shop on East Drive serving several types of dishes from Pakistan. The dishes are made to order, and depending on your heat tolerance can be a bit on the spicy side. The dishes are served with a small amount of salad, a side of some sort (I had the chickpeas, or chole), a generous portion of rice and a roti (Pakistani flat bread). The roti was freshly made prior to our food coming out. I had the seekh kabab which wasquite delicious, well seasoned and hot (both temperature and spicy!). If time during your lunch break is at a premium, like many Pakistani kabab places I've been to, they're more than happy to take your order over the phone for pickup or to dine in. I was reminded of this fact, when we told the owner we'd actually need our food wrapped to go because we had run out of time when it was finished cooking. He was nice enough to tell us that we can call in our order next time so we can eat there. :D The facility leaves a little to be desired (but if you're there for the food, who cares what it looks like right?! haha). The seating is typical of the smaller mom&pop style restaurants which have tables, chairs but nothing fancy. It reminds me of the Ravi Kabob in Arlington, VA. People go there for the food. Parking is at a premium as this area of Arbutus/Halethorpe is street side parking only from what I can tell. Overall, I give Punjab Kabab & Sweets 4 stars. That's my personal opinion but yeah, if you like Pakistani food and are cravin' for the kabab check this place out, they have a good selection of different kababs you can try, a couple of other Pakistani dishes, such as okra and what not and they even advertised lassi, but didn't have time to try it out. read more

If ever greatness were clothed in a humble exterior, it's at Punjab Kabab. I came here with a friend for lunch and have to admit I was a little skeptical of the decor (divey and worn, though not exactly dirty) and atmosphere (grim and uncomfortable: think al-Jazeera news reports and no AC -- it was actually cooler outside, on a late June afternoon!) BUT: the food is incredible. We were both eating vegan that week, so she opted for the channa masala, I chose the okra and we split an order of vegetable biryani. We waited quite awhile, but there was a very good reason for that -- the lone chef / cashier / server was preparing our meal from scratch in the back. It smelled delicious, looked appetizing (even on cheap Styrofoam plates) and tasted best of all: spicy, fresh vegetables and lentils, colorful rice with and more vegetables, and pillowy-soft naan still blistered from the oven. Whoa. The funny thing is, after a recent lackluster Indian meal, I had started to think I just wasn't that interested in curries anymore. Wrong. I just wanted a step up from the bland, oily and overpriced dishes that constitute "food" at most restaurants. The food was really tasty, until I found a roach in my palak paneer. That's why it lost a star... Up until then it was great - spicy, garlicky with large chunks of pan fried paneer. I also got 2 veggies samosas which I did finish eating, they were very good - not spicy but flavorful and beautifully fried. It really doesn't look like much on the outside, and the interior is dirty - literally there is dirt along the edge of the walls and counters, and I saw roaches running along the counter. I'm honestly not trying to slam the place, and I really do want to support small businesses. If you can get past the possibility of a surprise roach in your food, it tastes great! read more

The first time I went here, I was so excited. The palak paneer was excellent and super spicy. The food here is really cheap and definitely good! There is nothing quite like a spicy plate of food with a lassi on a hot hot day after a hard day at school or work. You could buy a large freshly cooked meal for under $10. The restaurant is far from glamorous, but I don't mind. However, the second time I went, the chef saw me before I ordered my food (I'm a white girl) and suddenly my food had no spice at all! The owner, a kind and humorous family man, (whose name we never learned) hasn't been back to his native Lahore in more than 18 years; yet the food recalls the chutney scent of the fertile Punjab plains and sings a transcendent Qawwali hymn.
