Whenever my husband is in Hickory for a business trip, he makes reservations here. I was able to join him for two of the visits! This is the most delicious Japanese food I've had! I try to order a different dish each time and every dish has been made with the best of quality and freshness. Umi is owned and ran by a husband and wife. The husband is the chef and the wife provides the table service. I hope they keep the restaurant open for many more years!

This place is one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to and I've been to a 3 Michelin star sushi restaurant in Japan. We had the nigiris and 2 rolls and I must say the nigiris were amazing. The restaurant is owned by a sweet lady and her husband. They are both from Japan and you can taste the love in their food. I can't believe I found this place and the reviews don't lie. This place is amazing and the quality of fish is some of the best.

Food was outstanding from presentation to freshness to taste top-of-the-line all the way. Service was swift and she was kind and sweet inside its so cute tiny warm inviting dining area with 4 tables truly a hidden gem total recommend and I will definitely be dining here again.

Phenomenal experience! I had never eaten at an authentic Japanese restaurant before. The waitress was super nice and patient. She ensured we ordered an appropriate amount of food for our table. We ordered 2 appetizers and 5 sushi rolls to share between 3 people. She offered to take our group picture at the end of our meal. I'll definitely be back!

Half eaten bento box! $24 worth of deliciousness!

This place is wonderful. Having lived in Japan and been back many times, this is an authentic cultural experience. Just delightful.

Very good... But, the portions were small and it is a bit pricey. The decor is very lovely and inviting. I would go back.

I love the shrimp tempura (I like it with the sticky, sushi rice) and the sushi is very good.

This was our first experience and it definitely won't be the last. Where do I begin....well, from the very beginning, when we walked in, we were met with a pleasant hostess, who was smiling and eager to assist. We were immediately seated and greeted by our waitress, who was very knowledgeable and able to provide us with every detail of the menu, as well as, offer food suggestions. It was hard for us to make a decision because they offer a wide variety of choices. Our food arrived fairly quickly considering that it was Father's Day and pretty busy. The food was excellent and full of flavor. You could certainly tell that it was cooked and prepared with skill....remarkably good! We are some pretty hard people to please and they certainly exceeded our expectations! The customer service and professionalism by the owners and staff is outstanding! We were greeted by the owner, Mrs. Chanika who came over and introduced herself. She shared stories with us about the establishment and also checked on us throughout our dinner. I was highly impressed. After dinner, we sat outside on the benches in front of the restaurant and discussed what a delightful evening it was. They offer such a comfortable and welcoming environment and we did not want to leave! The Galley made Father's Day an enjoyable and memorable experience for my husband and his brothers! We are already planning our next visit.

It's amazingly fresh!! And the service is great. You can feel there's a standard here. I've eaten at another seafood joint in Hickory and the best thing about that plate was the slaw. Yikes. But outside of a coastal seafood meal, it's that good. Seriously, a great experience each time. 5 visits now- still good!!

Server was really nice!…read more The beautiful murals on the walls have been painted over with a depressing grey-blue. They look kinda dusty and dirty. The seats are worn. The food was underseasoned and bland. Uninspired. Somehow, the stuffed crab was burnt and undercooked. The shrimp and scallops were overcooked, and unseasoned. The flounder was bland, and had a hard uneven texture. The oysters were out of a can I could get for a dollar. It looked like some of the cooks were not wearing hairnets, and would come out of the back and sit in a corner. I got sick from eating and was gagging for at least an hour after leaving. I called the restaurant to warn them to check for any contamination, and the employee who spoke [supposedly a manager] said their food was fine. I've been nauseous for an hour now. Would not recommend. This places glory days are long gone, and their customers are in danger of getting food illnesses.

Greeted at bar (without eye contact) with "you'll just have to wait". Then two sets of people walking up to bar after us got served. Person finally asked what we wanted to drink - didn't have ingredients to make a common drink. Went back to hostess stand to wait for a table rather than continue with the over stressed bartender. Much shorter time than told to get a table. A plus! Waitress new and unfamiliar with menu and admitted before we left, new to Italian food. There was more that went wrong but being new I have to give her a pass. But, as far as kitchen goes, I ordered veal piccata. What I got was veal (excellent veal) with mushrooms and capers in light brown sauce. It was good, just not classic piccata sauce w/lemon/butter/wine. Caprese appetizer excellent. Shrimp FraDiavolo was excellent, perfect amount of spice. Advice- order from the menu parts that spell out what is in the dish - I ordered from the "pick one" section where you choose meat/ pasta/ sauce separately. And one last note- ladies bathroom is an embarrassment, needs repair/renovation.

Disorganized and Disappointing…read more We had high hopes for Duke's, especially with its upscale vibe and menu, but the reality fell far short. From the moment we sat down, things started going sideways. First red flag? The water left on our table had bugs floating in it. Not a great start. The waitress, while friendly, seemed completely overwhelmed--she forgot our orders multiple times, asked the same questions repeatedly, and left us waiting far too long between check-ins. It took 40 minutes just to get our soups, and the entrees didn't arrive until over an hour after we ordered. The entire experience felt chaotic. At one point, another server brought two dishes and a drink to our table that weren't even ours. Total confusion. Now let's talk about pricing--specifically, a $12 charge to split a 24 oz ribeye. How does that make sense when one person might not even be able to finish it? It felt like a greedy upcharge for no real reason. Menu clarity was another issue. The sides weren't listed clearly, and no one explained that the "loaded potato" option was actually a soup--not an actual potato. The clam chowder? It's a tomato-based red soup, which is definitely not what most people would expect when ordering chowder. A simple explanation from the staff would've gone a long way. The duck was actually fantastic, the crab cakes not so much. Dessert was also oddly handled. They offer a brownie, but ask, "Is that okay?" as if there are other options (there aren't). Then they bring one brownie split four ways--literally bite-sized portions on a single plate for a group of four. It felt more like a sampler than a real dessert. When it came time to pay, we were asked if we were ready for the check, but then they came back later and had to double-check everyone's order just to get the bill right. And instead of bringing the check, you're told to scan a QR code to pay--likely a move to avoid credit card processing fees, though it puts the burden on the customer to complete the transaction. Overall, Duke's tries to present itself as upscale, but the execution just isn't there. Sloppy service, confusing policies, and unnecessary upcharges make it hard to justify a return visit. Definitely not the dining experience we were hoping for.
