I normally cannot eat more than 2 sashimi without feeling a bit queasy, this did not happen while we ate at Umi The servers were fine in our opinions--some reviews thought they were inattentive. I think it's unnecessary to be entertained and checking on excessively, we dine at restaurants for the food, after all. Servers were here to help facilitate that process, and for many others. Our table were checked in on just enough times to make sure we had everything we needed and they were very polite:) One note on reservation: we went at lunch time on a weekend, I actually booked ahead of time. However, for a small bite near downtown Spokane or Riverfront Park, it's a convenient and enjoyable stop. One thing that stood out in a great way was the interior design--I really liked the modern lighting fixtures hanging overhead. Their varying shapes and heights--some resembling ovals, spheres, UFOs, or vases--added a fun, stylish flair to the dining space. The hostess did say hello, but there wasn't much warmth, and the overall atmosphere didn't feel very inviting. Our waitress took our order but only checked on us once or twice afterward. We eventually had to get up and let her know we wanted to order another dish, even though the space isn't very large. We ordered a chicken teriyaki bento box, and my daughter thought the chicken teriyaki itself was just okay, though she enjoyed everything else. The bento came with a generous amount of food, including tempura, salad, pot stickers, and a California roll. My husband had the Nigiri and Sashimi Combination, which was fresh and had a good balance of rice. My son and I shared the Caterpillar Roll and Godzilla Roll, but neither stood out as particularly memorable. We also ordered the crab and cheese wontons and the crispy calamari. Only the kids ate those dishes, but they finished all of it and didn't have anything negative to say, so it's safe to assume they were good. Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. We get seated and our drinks and appetizers ordered which came out pretty fast. We finished our appetizers and sat around for 10-15 minutes before our server came back to actually take our food order and she leaves not to be seen again for 15-20 minutes at minimum before our food came out. We finished our meal and the table was cleared of any dishes. Now the real horror begins. We sit for over 25 minutes waiting for our check! I could see our server looking at us as she helps everyone else so i finally grabbed another server to get our check who immediately brought it to us and I hand her my card. Waiting, waiting, waiting another 15+ minutes so we check our bank to see if the charge was even pending yet and the same they finally came back and handed our check to us as we were talking about our bill. THEY CHARGED US FOR SOMEONE ELSES MEAL!!!! Our total was $100 the charge on our account was for over $300! Stopped by Umi kitchen the other night and wow, such a nice vibe right when you walk in. The staff greeted me fast and made me feel comfy, not rushed at all. This is one of two sushi places we go to for lunch in Spokane. Every time we dine here we seem to over order but we enjoy every bite. We like sitting at the sushi bar watching the makings. Their talented art of displaying sushi and sashimi is beautiful. There is usually only one host/server but is prompt in taking our orders and attentive. The only negative when seated at the table are the ear hustlers as the tables are too close. We have to talk very low in order to have a decent conversation. Umi is one of the better Sushi/Chinese restaurants in Spokane. While it's not 100% authentic Japanese given the number of other Asian cuisines on the menu, the food is excellent and service fast and friendly. A sign that a restaurant cares about its sushi is the inclusion of hamachi kama and monkfish liver on the menu. We also enjoyed the Kobe beef roll and huge portions of shrimp chow mein. If you care about microplastics, skip the plastic tea bags. Parking can be a pain in Kendall Yards. You may have to park a block or two out and walk over as there is no dedicated lot. read more
