Stopped by Umi kitchen the other night and wow, such a nice vibe right when you walk in. The staff greeted me fast and made me feel comfy, not rushed at all. Our server was super kind and kept checking in just enough, never too much, just right! The sushi came out looking really pretty and tasted so fresh, like melt in your mouth good. I tried a couple rolls and a bowl, both were sooo tasty, I ate way more than I planned lol. Prices felt fair for what you get, which is nice these days. We were visiting Spokane for the day and were on a hunt for sushi. We decided on this spot based on reviews and came on a Saturday around 6 pm. I HIGHLY recommend you make a reservation if wanting to come here at peak times. The dining area is pretty small so it fills up quickly on busy nights. We were told it would be about a 45 minute wait. There's a mall close by so we killed time there. The wait ended up being a little over an hour but the sushi was really good! Everyone was friendly. A Decent Sushi Spot with Friendly Service and Stylish Touches Our experience at Umi Kitchen and Sushi Bar was overall pleasant. The pricing felt average for a sushi spot, and the food landed in that same category--solid, but not exceptional. We ordered the Himachi Supreme ($18 for 6 pieces) and the Yellowtail Collar. The Himachi sashimi itself was fresh and enjoyable, but what stood out most was the sauce--it was beautifully balanced and really elevated the flavor of the fish. In fact, we found it much more complementary than the sauce that came with the Yellowtail Collar, which leaned too sweet and strong for our taste. As for the Yellowtail Collar, the grilled fish was decent, though a bit drier and less flavorful than we hoped. Personally, I'd opt for Black Cod or Butterfish miso over this dish in the future, as those tend to be juicier and more delicate in texture. Despite that, the overall experience was still good. The restaurant was clean, and service was attentive and friendly. I don't think we'd go out of our way to return, as the food was relatively standard compared to other sushi and sashimi spots we've tried. However, for a small bite near downtown Spokane or Riverfront Park, it's a convenient and enjoyable stop. One thing that stood out in a great way was the interior design--I really liked the modern lighting fixtures hanging overhead. Their varying shapes and heights--some resembling ovals, spheres, UFOs, or vases--added a fun, stylish flair to the dining space. There's also outdoor seating, which is a nice option, though we noticed a lack of umbrellas, making it harder to find shade on sunny days. Final Thought If you're in the area and looking for a quick sushi stop with good ambiance and service, Umi Kitchen is a decent pick. This spot is quite small and fills up quickly, so if you're coming with a large group, it's a good idea to make a reservation. The host and waitress weren't particularly friendly or helpful. The hostess did say hello, but there wasn't much warmth, and the overall atmosphere didn't feel very inviting. Our waitress took our order but only checked on us once or twice afterward. We eventually had to get up and let her know we wanted to order another dish, even though the space isn't very large. We ordered a chicken teriyaki bento box, and my daughter thought the chicken teriyaki itself was just okay, though she enjoyed everything else. The bento came with a generous amount of food, including tempura, salad, pot stickers, and a California roll. My husband had the Nigiri and Sashimi Combination, which was fresh and had a good balance of rice. My son and I shared the Caterpillar Roll and Godzilla Roll, but neither stood out as particularly memorable. We also ordered the crab and cheese wontons and the crispy calamari. Only the kids ate those dishes, but they finished all of it and didn't have anything negative to say, so it's safe to assume they were good. Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. We get seated and our drinks and appetizers ordered which came out pretty fast. We finished our appetizers and sat around for 10-15 minutes before our server came back to actually take our food order and she leaves not to be seen again for 15-20 minutes at minimum before our food came out. We finished our meal and the table was cleared of any dishes. Now the real horror begins. We sit for over 25 minutes waiting for our check! I could see our server looking at us as she helps everyone else so i finally grabbed another server to get our check who immediately brought it to us and I hand her my card. Waiting, waiting, waiting another 15+ minutes so we check our bank to see if the charge was even pending yet and the same they finally came back and handed our check to us as we were talking about our bill. THEY CHARGED US FOR SOMEONE ELSES MEAL!!!! Our total was $100 the charge on our account was for over $300! Will never return here again and will steer people to the many other and better options for sushi. Only positive not was it was decently priced. Located in a very cute downtown Spokane neighborhood. The restaurant is pretty small, but it had a lot of good choices. As a relatively big group, they were able to piece together some tables so we can all sit together. The food was good but very overpriced in my opinion. Searching for reasonably priced sushi revealed Umi on Yelp! I had to try it. There is an upper and lower level. I entered the upper level just before 5:00 P.M. on a Sunday, and it was fairly packed. No worries, they sent me downstairs, and I sat at the bar below. There were a number of tasty looking rolls on the with menu. Such a solid spot! Every time I have come here the service has been great. Came in at prime time, dinner on a Saturday night and were seated within 10 minutes without reservations. This is one of two sushi places we go to for lunch in Spokane. Every time we dine here we seem to over order but we enjoy every bite. We like sitting at the sushi bar watching the makings. The last Vegas roll was bright, colorful, tasty and well balanced. Wish I took a picture, my only qualm was the roll wasn't fully uniform, maybe it's not meant to be? There was no rice along the plate side of the roll. It was very tasty and filling but fell apart as I picked each piece up, missing that full circle of rice. The fried gyoza was crispy, fresh and delicious. The restaurant was very clean and servers were on top of everything. Took my husband for his first guided sushi experience, according to moi. He really appreciated my input and ordered the Godzilla Roll, while I had the Tiger Roll. Umi is one of the better Sushi/Chinese restaurants in Spokane. While it's not 100% authentic Japanese given the number of other Asian cuisines on the menu, the food is excellent and service fast and friendly. A sign that a restaurant cares about its sushi is the inclusion of hamachi kama and monkfish liver on the menu. We also enjoyed the Kobe beef roll and huge portions of shrimp chow mein. If you care about microplastics, skip the plastic tea bags. Parking can be a pain in Kendall Yards. You may have to park a block or two out and walk over as there is no dedicated lot. read more
