Very disappointing. The ambience is good, it's a small place but it's cute. We got there and ordered an appetizer and three sushi rolls right away. The appetizer was the honey walnut shrimp. Which was very bad. They were soggy, and VERY fishy. Then we proceeded to wait almost 45 minutes for our sushi rolls. we got the Spokane roll, the tiger roll and the shrimp crunch roll. The crunchy shrimp roll was room tempt and tasted very dry, like it had been finished for a while and sat on the counter. The tiger roll was colder and tasted fine, nothing special, but our shrimp tempura inside the roll was like missing the shrimp! Very odd. I am attaching a picture. The Spokane roll was disappointing because it was supposed to come with shrimp tempura but they didn't add it, so it had like no texture at all, just very slimy. 1. Quality of sushi was subpar 2. We finally made it to Umi North. The Umi in Kendal Yards has been a favorite of ours for sushi. Meeting a friend for lunch yesterday and even tho she had to cancel we decided to go ahead and get a table. The usual menu of delicious choices was offered along with a short selection of lunch specials. I had the Spokane Roll as my hubby had the Kung Pao Chicken lunch. Mine was perfect as always, the lunch came with 2 sides. He chose the Egg drop Soup and white rice. I'm not sure how they make the soup but it was one of the best I've tasted. The Kung Pao, very large portion IMP was fresh, perfectly cooked and definitely shareable. They were pretty busy for a Monday, plenty of seating inside for a small space. We've been to the Umi downtown and truly only went there because I read the negative reviews about service at this location. I've gotta say we have zero complaints about this location. The service was great! I wish I remembered our servers name. He was so friendly and on the spot with our food and checking to see if things were good. He even made us the yuzu margarita, which isn't on this locations menu. Our food- so delicious. We ordered the goyza, spicy tuna roll, Spokane roll & chow mein w chicken. Asked the hostess if it was ok to order.. she said, "I guess", and proceeded to seat me at sushi bar in front of sushi chef. Their sushi chef refused to acknowledge me and I was literally getting mean-mugged from a male server. Got up and walked the heck out. It's ok. Ambiance: The atmosphere is nice. It's clean, enough space between the tables that you don't feel crowded, and just about what you'd expect from a sushi bar in Spokane. Food: overall, the food was good. Maybe our second favorite in Spokane after Sushi house (Fairwood or Trent location). Edamame - delicious. The sauce was great and the edamame was cooked wonderfully. Fried California Roll - this was our favorite. It was crispy and fresh all at the same time. California roll - this was our second favorite. It tasted really fresh and delicious. Tiger - Third favorite. This was delicious, but not spectacular. Not that we didn't like it, it was prepared well, it just wasn't so good that it really stood out. Rod roll - this was not my favorite. It almost tasted like it has pepperoni or a chunk of pepper in the middle. Definitely not my favorite. My husband liked it, but I wasn't a fan. Service: We were sat quickly and it seemed the service was good off the bat, but after we got our appetizers it was downhill a little. When we ordered we had asked for low sodium Soy sauce. The sushi came and I had to ask again. The waitress (third one we had had) literally brought back a tiny saucer full of low sodium soy sauce instead of a container that I could pour myself. So... it was only enough for me, not both of us. It was weird lol. Then three waitresses later we got our table cleared, one and a half later we got our check, and then back to our original waitress she took our payment and we were out. Point being - we had like 5 waitresses and no one really owned us. They were all very kind and it wasn't terrible, but it made it difficult to get what we needed in a timely manner. The chicken was well cooked, but the dish was a bit oily for my taste. However, the Mongolian Beef was unusual in that it had a lot of onions sauteed with the beef. The beef was tender and well spiced, and surprisingly, I enjoyed the onions, too. Oh, and the best part is that everything we had is part of their nightly (Sun - Thurs, maybe?) "Happy Hour" menu where the things they offer are at or near 50% price reduction! One martini each, 2 mains and a Tempura Shrimp roll later, we left a 22% tip and walked away for $60. This location used to belong to Wasabi, I remember it being dark. Since Umi has renovated the place, it's so much brighter and welcoming. Our server was very nice and attentive. We started off with sake oyster shooters, poke salad, crab and cheese wonton, house salad, hot tea and hot sake. The sake oyster shooters were good, but I think prefer regular oyster shooters with cocktail sauce and horseradish. The poke salad is amazing, always a must when we go there. The crab and cheese wontons were ok. The dough was too thick so it wasn't a good crunch. My friend had the house salad , she enjoyed it , she said there was a bit of heat in the dressing. We ordered the sashimi platter, Spokane roll, crunchy shrimp roll, stuffed pumpkin roll, and one more I forgot the name. The Spokane roll was our favorite. We noticed that many other tables also ordered the same roll. We also ordered the Umi Thai beef, and that was delicious . The beef was so tender. The beef chow mein, was okay. They beef was very tender , but the noodles seemed like they were spaghetti noodles and the sauce just wasn't that great for us. It could have been better. The nigori sake is my favorite sake to enjoy with sushi, always. We would try again, maybe there are other dishes that are better . read more

Yesterday my daughter, husband and I went to Umi after an exhausting day of medical appointments. We have been here many times since they opened and until yesterday only had amazing food and service no matter what we ordered. I ordered the heat attack roll and shrimp and vegetable tempura which I have had many times and love. However the heart attack roll was swimming in a liquid sauce and was completely different than before, I ate it because I was really hungry but it was not good. The tempra was not as light and delicious. My husband has the teriyaki bento box and it was super disappointing. My daughter had the Hawaiian roll and a spicy scallop hand roll and neither one of them were very good. The waiter completely sucked.. I have never had such nonchalant service there. I sincerely hope this was a one off experience $110 for 3 people and gas station sushi is not okay. read more

Wow! What a change! UMI we commend you in becoming the lousiest sushi and eatery place in Washington! Appetizer: Honey Walnut Shrimp was over sauced and the walnuts were ground into a powder they sprinkled on top of the over sauced shrimp. Terrible! Panda Express does a million times better job in what they call Honey Walnut Shrimp... and they don't charge near the extremely overpriced stuff we got here. Sushi Rolls #1 & #2: Both rolls were so loosely put together, they just fell apart while trying to lift them with chopsticks, and they were stuck to the plate, which made us slide them to loosen, and then lift as it began to fall apart. The Las Vegas Roll had shrimp in some pieces, but not all. The asparagus was limited in the same way. The shrimp was a bit tough to chew, it overcooked you might say! The Tiger Roll was about the same , but had chewy-er shrimp that was sliced, the fake crab was tough. General Tao's Chicken with white steamed rice: Hmmm... this is were it became a nightmare to pay the $71 plus change bill - for trashy "food"! The chicken tasted like it was fried "long ago, and far away"... then, possibly microwaved and sauced to bring some softness to the mess... VERY SOGGY STUFF! And about 3 pieces I ate had zero chicken in them... and the other two pieces I ate had little pea size pieces of chicken in them. We are hoping our five big puppies might enjoy this stuff, as we had them box it up for us to take home. They are super great eaters... but... there have been a couple doggie bags they wouldn't touch... and this stuff we just are not sure! Oh and if you want to have a conversation with your date...don't bother coming here unless you want the people to your left and right to hear your whole conversation. I am a big fan of good, no great sushi. It is not always easy to find in our wonderful little big town of Spokane. Umi North delivered, not only really great sushi but tremendous service. They were fast, kind an extremely friendly. My family and I tried 4 or 5 different rolls and all of them were beautiful and delicious. No great sushi is ever cheap but it was very reasonably priced. I am looking forward to going back because I saw some other meals being delivered to tables like the chow mein and fried rice that look huge and would be a great sharable. Tried Umi North for the first time. We have visited the Kendal Yards Umi and this restaurant has just as good quality sushi and other dishes. Excellent service and food that we have grown to expect at Umi. Love that it is closer to us in the North. We had Tiger rolls, Sashimi, Nigori, CA rolls, sesame chicken, teriyaki chicken and tempura mix. All excellent. The saki was especially great. read more

Well, not sure what is going on here now. Been a couple times and it was good. Ordered takeout and they forgot my soup, teriyaki was bland, grilled chicken with no seasoning and sauce just poured over it, seemingly no marinade. The curry was ok but grainy, they didn't use the noodles the menu said, hardly any veggies and the chicken was dry and bland. The roll i got was just ok as well. This was a 70$ tab, not worth it at all and am not pleased. In this economy i know it is tough in this business, but that works both ways and i will be saving my money next time i have an asian craving. read more

We've tried so many sushi spots in Spokane & Umi is now our go-to! All of the food was delicious; hands down the most fresh fish I've had at any sushi place in the area. We love the food at Umi's at Kendall Yards, but it very much feels like a fast food experience in regard to ambience. The Umi's North has solved that problem. A cute little bistro-type atmosphere with excellent food. Lots of variety, healthy choices abound, super customer service. The portions are huge, so family style might be a good way to go.
