I loved how warm it was on the outside and contained ice cream in the center. Get the chirashi! You get the chef's choice of sashimi on top of a bowl of rice. It's very fresh and beautiful. It has a bar and tv throughout. Many people were watching the World Cup and screaming/being loud. The restaurant has a dome in the center so it echoes the noise. This is a place to choose if you don't mind the sounds but my family was uncomfortable with hearing someone screaming seemingly in our ears. They don't take reservations but we were seated immediately upon arrival. There are also many tables. We were able to fit a baby stroller inside and there is plenty of space to move around. I lived in Hawaii for about 3 years and this is probably some of the most flavorful chicken katsu I've had since coming back to the mainland US. The rice cooked to perfection, the chicken, veggies, fried egg, all seasoned and bursting flavor onto your tongue. To compliment the food and great atmosphere, they even had a live DJ playing some great music. The service was acceptable. My dad stopped by Umi's on his way home from work and ordered dinner for us. The ambiance was so-so and the service was about the same. The biggest issue however was how they handled his celiac disease. He explained that he has celiac and needs to avoid all gluten but the staff didn't seem knowledgeable or concerned about preventing cross contamination. To make matters worse they packed my food which contained wheat in the same container as his meal. For someone with celiac that's simply not acceptable. It was very disappointing to see such a lack of awareness and care for a serious medical condition. We did call back and get a partial refund but I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone with celiac or a food allergy. read more

We arrived and there was a wait, and we were told we couldn't sit at the bar and eat, but when we eventually got seated, we saw numerous people walk up and sit at the bar and were able to order food and drink. I enjoyed my bento box dinner here tonight. I had sesame chicken with a delicious dry N.A. beer. The waitress was nice, but very busy. I had to ask for my California roll, which didn't come with wasabi or ginger. I was a little confused by that, but since it came late, I didn't follow up. The tempura was tasty, the sesame chicken tangy and sweet. Ginger dressing with an iceberg lettuce salad and a light miso soup. Good meal overall, but I know next time to ask for wasabi and ginger. As a non drinker, my N.A. beer paired perfectly with my meal, and the waitress' recommendation of the sesame chicken bento was perfect for my first time here.
