ve always been a big fan of Ono Poke, and today, we grabbed dinner at the Oxmoor location. Not many people were inside, so naturally, all of the workers were on their phones. Unfortunately, it's not the most reassuring to watch someone scroll on their phone and then immediately handle food (without hand washing after). We both built our own bowls, and it was the perfect amount. One of the bowls we ordered was missing 2 toppings, so we had to ask at the counter for a side of those toppings. The food tasted amazing; I always really enjoy what I order here. They started putting up chairs at 7:30, but they close at 8. I felt a bit rushed out. I never want to stay past my welcome, and I always try to be wary of ordering too close to a restaurant's closing time. I understand wanting to get home, but people were still eating inside. This location seems to be predominantly run by high school students, so maybe my expectations are a bit too high. When I tell you this place is SO GOOD! Let's talk: 1. Atmosphere: the first thing you notice about a restaurant is the cleanliness and being a bartender myself, I pay extra attention. So walking in and seeing a spotless floor, clean tables, chairs, counters, etc. was an immediate green flag. There wasn't a crumb, sesame seed, or wrapper anywhere. Moving on to the actual vibe, it's so cute! A greenery wall with an LED sign is on the right and a cool mural wraps around the left to the front with pictures and even definitions for words and phrases you'd hear in Hawaii. The staff they have are super nice and knowledgeable, answering every question thrown at them with a smile and serving food insanely quick. It is a smaller storefront so there is limited seating and its counter serve so they run your food out to you (just a heads up if that's not the route you're looking for). 2. Food: Uh, YUM?! They have bowls you can choose from or they have build your own bowls that provide endless possibilities. I'm an Ahi Tuna fanatic so I opt for that in a rice bowl and a plethora of toppings. When I say you can actually TASTE the freshness, it's to die for. Like I'm actually obsessed with how crisp the veggies are, sweet the fruit is, and how delectably the tuna melts in your mouth. I took one bite and thought I was in Oahu for a minute (sadly I'm still in Alabama, oh well!). My son also loved his shrimp and crab on rice. But don't worry! They have chicken if that is more palatable for you. Only downside was they don't offer a kids portion for anything other than chicken but I promise you, that wasn't a complaint of mine for long once my son absolutely obliterated his meal (the fact that y'all made something so good that my six year old ate every bite impressed the heck out of me!). 3. The only negative was it seemed to be several high school workers on the job who were less than enthused to be working. The soda machine was flat so I asked to have it changed and it took them about 10 minutes to get it fixed, nearly when our meals were finished. First world problems right. Poke please I love a good poke bowl, especially when I'm looking for a lighter meal option, and Ono is my go-to. The Homewood location has such cute decor, especially the mural and huge neon sign. I went with an Ahi Tuna bowl that was just super. I added seaweed, which is something that I just love. You pick a protean and then get unlimited toppings, sauces, etc. on top of that. The regular bowl was just right for each of us. The rice was nicely done. The meats were fresh and high quality. They give generous portions too. It was a perfect lunch and is a real change from the typical lunch fair... I wish we had one here in Anderson SC. My husband ordered lunch for us on the way to take our son to a tennis lesson. He called ahead to confirm the order. Ono Poke said they had not received the order yet, so my husband read them off the order details and they promised to prepare it and provide us our order as long as he showed a receipt. When we got there, Ono Poke had changed their minds and refused to prepare our order. My husband showed them the order receipt which listed the date and time and store location and specific items in the order and amount paid. They refused. They said we had to call DoorDash to cancel the order and re-order it in-store or ask DoorDash to re-send the order. Technology is imperfect. Decent customer service recognizes that and acts reasonably and...human. For a restaurant to see clearly that we had beyond any doubt paid for the exact food we were requesting and still refuse to make it after we spent 15 minutes on the phone and in store is simply inexcusable. We did not get our lunch and our son was late for his lesson. We order from Ono Poke all the time either at Pizitz or Oxmoor. We will probably go there again. We love the food, but what a heartless way to treat loyal customers. read more

Today was my first time at Ono Poke in about two years. The only time previous, they served my dry, crunchy rice. I thought I'd give them another go. On the positive side, they have figured out how to cook rice. On the bad side, the ahi tuna was dry, leathery and didn't look fresh at all. It tasted fine, but it wasn't very pleasant looking. I've been eating raw tuna at sushi and poke restaurants for over 30 years and I've never seen any that looked or tasted like this. I ordered lava sauce which I thought would be spicy. Instead it was a SWEET mayonnaise. It wasn't bad but didn't taste like something called "lava". The entire meal was just a sugar overload and not my cup of tea. Bowl and a drink, $19. I opted to make my own. I got spice tuna, white rice, edamame, cucumbers, crab salad and lava sauce (yum yum and siracha). I was very impressed with the quality and freshness of ingredients. The only complaint I have is the sauce was too heavy. It covered up the salmon. My bowl was around $11 which I thought was very reasonable for the quality and quantity. I was very disappointed in my meal. They did not have an area to showcase their fresh food. When I didn't see that initially, I should have left. I ordered spicy tuna and there was something red chopped into fine pieces. The shrimp was good, but it was hidden under thick mayo based sauce. This restaurant is seriously cute just from an aesthetic standpoint. The giant neon Mahalo sign on a backdrop of green foliage that makes for some great potential photo ops. Now, onto the food! I am not familiar with Hawaiian fare, so poke was brand new to me, but I love it. Sushi grade fish, rice, a nice variety of textures and toppings, and a great savory sauce to finish it off, served cold. I love mine with avocado, salmon, crunch topping, edamame, brown rice, and topiko! The "regular" size bowl seems a little small, but is surprisingly filling. I came here yesterday for the grand opening of Ono Poke's Homewood location. I've actually never even tried a poke bowl before, but I have always loved sushi. A sushi bowl sounds good right? Well, I was wrong. It was fantastic! Everything I thought it would be and more! I had some time to study the menu a bit before I ordered, but never having tried nor heard of a lot of the ingredients, I decided to be adventurous and give most of them a try. I went with a regular (16 oz.) bowl. For my base I chose 1/2 brown rice and 1/2 mixed greens. I I feel like it's not really a sushi bowl without rice, so that'll probably be my regular base. As for the Poke, or meat/protein, I got 1/2 spicy tuna and 1/2 shrimp. I had to have something raw in my bowl to get the full sushi effect, but also wanted shrimp. I'm really glad they let you choose more than one option. I seasoned my bowl with rice seasoning, edamame, cucumber, avocado, crunch, hot cheetos (yes!), and crab salad. I loved everything! For creating my first bowl, I was impressed! They also offer a few bowl creations so if you aren't sure what pairs well together, you can always have them pick out some tried and true combinations. Now for the five different sauces, I had no idea what any were so they allowed me to try a sample of each. I ended up liking all the sauces, but used all of the wasabi aioli and what I believe was the ponzu sauce? on my bowl. Every staff member was extremely nice and helpful. You could tell they were all very excited about this new location. There are about a dozen tables inside, and the decor is beautiful. I love to build my own bowl which can include up to 2 proteins for no extra charge. Avocado does cost $1 extra, but I got a full half avocado on my bowl so I was not disappointed in spending the extra money. The regular sized bowl is plenty for a full meal and they do not skimp on the toppings. A bowl is basically like a deconstructed sushi roll and can completely satisfy a sushi craving. The poke fries are also unreal. Crispy french fries served with a side of spicy aoli - they are the perfect accompaniment to your poke bowl! My partner and I ordered from here via DoorDash not long ago, and we've been talking about it ever since! We both ordered the large crunch bowl with brown rice, but he got the salmon and I got the spicy tuna. Also, we each got our own seaweed salad. First off, I'd like to mention that it was the best seaweed salad I've had. I ended up adding it to my crunch bowl! Secondly, the food was fresh and the flavors were all very complimentary. And the large portion is tremendous! His salmon, in decently-sized chunks, was beautiful and delicious. My spicy tuna was heavenly. Poke is one of my favorite foods, and Ono Poke is definitely the best poke spot I have found in Birmingham. There is a large variety of ingredients you can add to your bowl that are always fresh and tasty. The regular bowl size is my ideal portion size, and is relatively cheap given the amount of food you get. The best thing is just how customizable it is: you get to choose your proteins, and add as many veggies, toppings, and sauces as you desire. We also always order their Ono fries, and I don't know what it is about them but they are SO delicious (especially with the spicy mayo sauce!). They make a great side dish to the fresh poke bowl.
