Make Build Your Own Bowl - Regular (Ahi Tuna, pineapple, white rice, masago, edamame, fresh jalapeño, seaweed, spicy aioli)
    Emma F.

When I tell you this place is SO GOOD! Let's talk: 1. Atmosphere: the first thing you notice about a restaurant is the cleanliness and being a bartender myself, I pay extra attention. So walking in and seeing a spotless floor, clean tables, chairs, counters, etc. was an immediate green flag. There wasn't a crumb, sesame seed, or wrapper anywhere. Moving on to the actual vibe, it's so cute! A greenery wall with an LED sign is on the right and a cool mural wraps around the left to the front with pictures and even definitions for words and phrases you'd hear in Hawaii. The staff they have are super nice and knowledgeable, answering every question thrown at them with a smile and serving food insanely quick. It is a smaller storefront so there is limited seating and its counter serve so they run your food out to you (just a heads up if that's not the route you're looking for). 2. Food: Uh, YUM?! They have bowls you can choose from or they have build your own bowls that provide endless possibilities. I'm an Ahi Tuna fanatic so I opt for that in a rice bowl and a plethora of toppings. When I say you can actually TASTE the freshness, it's to die for. Like I'm actually obsessed with how crisp the veggies are, sweet the fruit is, and how delectably the tuna melts in your mouth. I took one bite and thought I was in Oahu for a minute (sadly I'm still in Alabama, oh well!). My son also loved his shrimp and crab on rice. But don't worry! They have chicken if that is more palatable for you. Only downside was they don't offer a kids portion for anything other than chicken but I promise you, that wasn't a complaint of mine for long once my son absolutely obliterated his meal (the fact that y'all made something so good that my six year old ate every bite impressed the heck out of me!). 3. Price: AFFORDABLE AS HELL. I expect to spend $45+ on us to eat stuff this good at a counter service place. After tip we didn't even spend $38. With endless toppings??? Dude, y'all have made a regular out of me. Seriously y'all, if you haven't tried this place: RUN DONT WALK. It's phenomenal!!!

The poke bowls are fantastic, great flavor and fresh ingredients. I'm really glad I've found this place and had no idea Birmingham had this one of a kind spot more native to Hawaii and the west coast. I had the ahi tuna bowl for my first visit with the sweet sauce and build your own ingredients. I especially liked the pineapple and cucumber. The only negative was it seemed to be several high school workers on the job who were less than enthused to be working. The soda machine was flat so I asked to have it changed and it took them about 10 minutes to get it fixed, nearly when our meals were finished. First world problems right. I'll be back for sure but maybe to get it to-go from now on.

This place never disappoints and the food is always amazing!! The best poke bowls I have ever had! Every time I visit Birmingham, I have to stop here for sure! We love the reg poke bowl (16oz) $11.25 crunch bowl with white rice, cucumber, edamame, pineapple, tuna, crab, scallion, crunch, tabuk, spicy aioli and samurai sauce. We also get the large crunch poke bowl (24oz) $14.25. It's always super fresh and they use great quality items. You must eat here!

    Lava bowl with spicy tuna

This was my first time having a poke bowl and it was delicious! In fact it was the most satisfying meal I've had in a long time. Imagine a deconstructed sushi roll. I look forward to visiting the Summit location soon too! I had a lava bowl and I added spicy tuna. I am a fan of spicy food and usually when I order spicy sushi it isn't very spicy to me, but this has a kick to it. The spice level wasn't overwhelming though.

Large Bowl with stuff. Ridiculously, they lack chopsticks!

I love that we have a "poke" restaurant in Birmingham. But, quality quite frankly isn't great. The salmon was pale yellow-ish and not that tasteful. Tuna came shredded and it had so much added that I could barely tell it was tuna. Rice was overly cooked and sticky. Way too much dressing and overpowering. I didn't feel like eating something that fresh and healthy.

Custom bowl (you can ask for sauce on the side!)

Plentiful portions, chunky sashimi, yummy sauce - what more can you ask for in a poke bowl? We were first timers here and for some reason, I expected to see what I call a "Subway style" layout (clear case for customers to choose from), but the store had just a simple storefront with all the food prep happening behind the counter. Not that it made a difference really though - I called in my order anyway. I also liked that they were willing to let me get sauce on the side! Next time I'm in town and it is safe to do so, I would love to eat in - they have a cute interior with a highlight grass wall lettered with "instagramable" neon light. I didn't think this would be this disappointing, but I guess it factored quite a bit into my overall rating - I do wish that they asked me what I wanted for my base. We live a bit far and like to save leftovers, but a rice base hardens in the fridge so we prefer salad. I forgot to mention my preference during the order but a reminder would have been nice...

My husband ordered lunch for us on the way to take our son to a tennis lesson. He called ahead to confirm the order. Ono Poke said they had not received the order yet, so my husband read them off the order details and they promised to prepare it and provide us our order as long as he showed a receipt. When we got there, Ono Poke had changed their minds and refused to prepare our order. My husband showed them the order receipt which listed the date and time and store location and specific items in the order and amount paid. They refused. They said we had to call DoorDash to cancel the order and re-order it in-store or ask DoorDash to re-send the order. Technology is imperfect. Decent customer service recognizes that and acts reasonably and...human. For a restaurant to see clearly that we had beyond any doubt paid for the exact food we were requesting and still refuse to make it after we spent 15 minutes on the phone and in store is simply inexcusable. We did not get our lunch and our son was late for his lesson. We order from Ono Poke all the time either at Pizitz or Oxmoor. We will probably go there again. We love the food, but what a heartless way to treat loyal customers.

Poke is so good here!!! Both locations are excellent and offer amazing toppings. Grab a poke bowl if you are near!

Update: we went back today and everything was perfect! Fries were super crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Ahi tuna was beautifully marinated and the rice was cooked spot on. Thanks for a wonderful lunch!

This is an awesome go to lunch spot. You'll feel satisfied and full without feeling gross. Seriously great quality fish, I always go for the tuna. I love the topping options, they're always fresh and perfect to give me all the perfect flavor and texture combos I want in a bowl. Rice is fresh and warm. If you haven't checked this place out, it's worth your while!

Oddly dark and shiny tuna that had the texture of gelatin. The sauce is called lava but it's a super sweet mayonnaise. I'm so confused.

Today was my first time at Ono Poke in about two years. The only time previous, they served my dry, crunchy rice. I thought I'd give them another go. On the positive side, they have figured out how to cook rice. On the bad side, the ahi tuna was dry, leathery and didn't look fresh at all. It tasted fine, but it wasn't very pleasant looking. I've been eating raw tuna at sushi and poke restaurants for over 30 years and I've never seen any that looked or tasted like this. I ordered lava sauce which I thought would be spicy. Instead it was a SWEET mayonnaise. It wasn't bad but didn't taste like something called "lava". The entire meal was just a sugar overload and not my cup of tea. Bowl and a drink, $19. At that price, the fish should look and taste fresh. I think I'm officially done with Ono Poke.

So I have been dreaming of a Poké place to grace the quaint streets of Homewood and here it is. It is the cutest little restaurant I've seen in a long time. Welcoming atmosphere, incredibly friendly staff and amazing food. I like that the menu is customizable. They have a few pre made bowls you can add protein too or make your own. I opted to make my own. I got spice tuna, white rice, edamame, cucumbers, crab salad and lava sauce (yum yum and siracha). I was very impressed with the quality and freshness of ingredients. The only complaint I have is the sauce was too heavy. It covered up the salmon. My bowl was around $11 which I thought was very reasonable for the quality and quantity. You can get a small or large bowl or make a burrito. I will be back!

The menu rotates seasonally, which makes it easier to try new things. My favorite menu item so far has been the cheeseball that was on the menu around Christmas time. It had a great flavor served with crackers the only thing is when we came back after the first of the year it wasn't on the menu anymore. On my most recent visit I had the queso which also had great flavor, served with blue corn tortilla chips. When it comes to the drinks I like how on the menu they let you know how strong it is using toucans. Many of the drinks feature rum, but they do still offer some gin and tequila options. Everything I've had has been good and something I would try again. I would like to note that many of the drinks are fruity and can be somewhat sweet. At Christmas time they even had holiday themed drinkware which I felt was a nice touch. If you are not a drinker, they also have options for mocktails. Which has been great for me the last couple of months. I didn't care for the Phony Negroni, but I think Negroni itself might be an acquired taste

It was the perfect size and had no left overs. My base was brown rice. It was perfect adding in the warm comfort that I was looking for. My protein was shrimp and the toppings I chose were guacamole, ginger, jalapenos, pineapple, sweet onions, scallions, and what they call crunch. To top it off, I went for the soy sauce.
