Really enjoy their lunch special bento boxes. Delicious variety of food for a good price. However, as I sit here in a booth today, finishing up my lunch, I can't help but keep noticing that one of their sushi chefs is standing at the sushi bar constantly rubbing his upper lip and picking at something under his nose. This has gone on for about five minutes, and my appetite is now gone. Oh look..he just got an order in and went right to filling it...making rolls WITHOUT washing his hands first. The rolls we ordered were really very good --cherry blossom and I don't remember the other one. The service was really lacking. I entered and noone greeted us. After several servers and possible even the owner passed us multiple times, I asked if we simply seat ourselves. They said no they would seat us soon. (There were only 3 tables occupied at the time.) And the rolls took about 30 minutes. WAY to long, when by this point we were the only ones in the restaurant. This place was great. They gave out free aptizers and the drinks had 1 free refill and they food itself was great. The price for the food was pretty fair and we had a good meal for 3 for just 80 dollars. There menu was wide and had my different options which included fried sushi, which I found delicious. The only thing I have to say is they should cut there sashimi a little bit thiner as it was quite thick, but it was still really good and like I said they had a fair price. I'll start by saying the food was tasty and the waitress was very nice. But there were quite a few things I didn't love about this place and sadly won't likely return. We went for dinner on a Friday night. The white wine selection was super limited, they literally had 5 types of Chardonnay - that's it. My daughter had ramen, and instead of a ramen egg, it's was just a hard boiled egg. The special rolls weren't tightly wrapped and kept falling apart in our chopsticks. The beef in the beef bowl was very fatty, most of it we just pushed to the side. I want to say that this is a place I think many people may like, but it just wasn't the way I like sushi. I ordered a few pieces of nigiri and the fish that came out was cut way too thick. The thickness of the fish was almost equal to that of the rice. I'm pretty proud of my chopstick skills, but I was having trouble getting the chopsticks around these big pieces. Like I said at the start, some people may call this a good value, but I have never had nigiri cut like this and I found it to be out of proportion and unpleasant to eat. The only thing I really hated was the chopped tuna they use in their maki rolls. It had an off-putting taste and I ended up spitting it out in my napkin. We brought it up with a waitress who just said ok and walked away. I got pot stickers that were tasty, so I have hope that bob-sushi items on the menu would be more pleasurable. Well, needless to say we won't go back. We ordered 2 hot sake and the love boat. We got the sake ( not 10.00 sake) And never saw our waitress again, 1 hour 15 minutes and she finally asked us if we had already eaten. Umiya was actually a lot better than expected. The actual restaurant and store front is unbelievably tacky looking. The inside has a fake jelly fish tank and a goldfish tank and there's strange decor all around. Overall i didn't think i would be impressed. Prices were very good for food and sushi though, the eel steak with rice was 14 dollars and salmon rolls were like 5 bucks. I got the nabeyaki udon and the kimchi pajeon. The kimchi pajeon was tasty and a big size, it had a weird sweet taste but other than that it was good. The kimchi banchan was tasty as well. The nabeyaki udon was 11 dollars and huge, it came with a bunch of different fish cake and grilled chicken as well as a egg and two tempura shrimp. Food was good, but the service was terrible and on the weekend they don't have a lunch menu so you have to order dinner entrees. Our waitress dropped off the food and disappeared. We had to get chopsticks off of other tables. When we were done eating we had to wave our hands to get her attention and get our check. We asked for a "to go" box, but it never came. I'm really hoping they were having an off day. As many have said - their Korean food is pretty good. I really enjoyed my husband's bulgogi - it was well seasoned and delicious! However, I had a few frozen pieces of raw fish in my sashimi bibimbap - and that kind of ruined the meal for me. "Crunch" is definitely not something I want to hear when I'm biting into some delicious looking raw salmon. With the sushi game getting so great in Cedar Park, hopefully this is something they take care of soon. read more

We've been on a sushi quest for the past week or so and this place has been on our radar for awhile. It's usually very busy in the evenings and I wanted to find out what the crowd was about. The host/waiter greeted us quickly and was very personable. We ordered the red devil roll, spider roll and the shrimp tempura roll. The waiter then brought us the complimentary miso soup. The soup had a good flavor, much better than I've had at some other places. The rolls were all very good, but my favorite was the red devil roll. Who knew mozzarella cheese would go so well with the shrimp and crab and spicy sauce? It was really good. I understand the reason for the crowds. We were excited about a new Sushi restaurant opening around the corner from us so we took our 12 year-old for lunch on her birthday yesterday. We were the only ones in the place which was understandable since they only opened last week but the staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. My husband and daughter had the sushi and sashimi lunch specials and loved it! The prices and portions were great! They even gave us complimentary fried dumplings which were very large and tasty. The atmosphere was nice and typical for the average small sushi restaurant. The only thing I was disappointed in was that the salad came with italian dressing instead of the typical ginger dressing. Alissa and I have been trying to visit, enjoy, and support the local restaurants recently. We scored last week with the local pizza joint - Domenick's - and now we found our new favorite sushi spot! Umiya is brand new. I even had to add it to Yelp! It's in a strip mall, but it's decorated inside so that you can enjoy the casual, relaxing atmosphere. The service was the best! Our waitress let us sit where we wanted and quickly got us drinks. We checked out the menus and decided on a light lunch of a roll each. But we got much more! We were brought a bowl of miso soup, a fried dumpling each, and a house special sushi roll before we got our ordered food. Obviously, she wants us to come back. And we will! I really want to give this place five stars just cause they made me giggle but I don't think that's kosher. They have a roll on the menu called "Mexican Organism" and I figured it was a typo but then the waitress comes over and I order the thing and she calls it a Mexican Orgasm and uh, yeah... Still, it was pretty good. Got that and the spicy tuna roll, both were good, not transcendent. The random slices of watermelon for dessert were a nice touch. Place is very small, maybe a dozen tables and there was a large group of very loud Asian gentlemen that kept adding tables and monopolizing the time of basically everyone in there. I know I had stars in my eyes when I tried it before, but after the charm has passed, what's left is substandard food. Now on my "don't get" list: The salmon nigiri, the red snapper soup, the beef teriyaki, the beef bulgogi, the mandoo soup, the vegetable tempura. And, it's weird to say, but the kim chi. I know I'm white, but I think it's bland. What to get? The other Korean soups: soon doobu chigae and kim chi chigae, though if I get the kim chi chigae again I'll make sure to order it "spicy", since it wasn't so much last time. I also have hopes for the Korean pancakes. Rosie's Pho isn't so far away, and their Bulgogi is great: Umiya can do better. read more

I've only been to Umiya once but compared to three other sushi restaurants in the area (i.e., Soto, Daiichi, and Sushi Fever), it's my least favorite. Service is on the slow side and the menu lacks most of the Japanese favorites I'd expect to see at a "Japanese" restaurant. The sushi lacks 'respect' (as they might say in Tokyo) which is indicated by widely overdone spiciness (in the Spicy Crab roll) and a boring blandness in some of the nigiri selections (albacore, for example). I think the best strategy at Umiya is to forget that it is a sushi restaurant and focus on the Korean dishes served there. The bulgogi that I had was delicious as was the steamed dumplings. I'll probably return to give Umiya a second chance - and I'll update my Yelp findings if my first visit was a aberration from a better norm there. read more

I have visited Umiya two times, for dinner, and totally agree with the other review comments regarding the quality of the sushi and the presentation. It is very convenient to have a good sushi restaurant minutes from my house and I really hope they make it as they are trying really hard. I do have two complaints with them. Service: It's amateurish at best. Servers can't answer the simplest of questions without asking the manager. There's also a good chance that your order will be presented at other tables before it correctly arrives at yours. Lastly you have to ask them to remove the used soup and salad dishes even though they are neatly stacked at the end of your table. This has been my experience on two Saturday evenings. The first Sat they were busy but last Sat they were not even at half capacity at 7PM. Also on last Sat one person in our party (party of 4) ordered a hot Korean dinner and it arrived promptly after the soup and appetizers however the sushi order (for the rest of us) for arrived about 40 minutes later. I would have expected that all of the entrées would arrive at the same time. Thankfully we were able to pass the time sipping our BYOB wine as they are still securing their liquor license. Menu: On both visits when we placed our sushi order the server had to return to inform us that certain sushi items were not available. Yea it's a nit but it would be handy for them and their patrons if they either stated what was not available or use their whiteboards to inform us. Next time we visit I'll be sure to ask before ordering. Yes, we politely informed the manager of these issues and she was very apologetic and she even provided us with a complimentary dessert. Yes, we will return but we will give them a few weeks to (hopefully) work out their service kinks. read more

Again, for Cedar Park, 5 stars. I love small, family-owned places and this is one of my favorites. I lost count how many times I've been here. I've had many many menu items, but when I have to default to my quick favorites, I get a bowl of miso and the Houston Rocket Roll. And I love the fresh orange slice they bring out after you're done with the meal. The new sushi place in town will bring some good competition but I think my heart is still with this place. After moving to Cedar Park in 2010, we desperately looked for a good restaurant nearby that we could run to for a quick fix. Unfortunately, all we could find were fast food chains and sub-par establishments. That's why we were sooooo happy after discovering Umiya. After being there countless times in the past few months, I can attest to the following: 1) The sushi is SUPERB. Compared to other (wanna-be) sushi restaurants in the area, Umiya's sushi rice is consistently perfect and fish is always fresh (seriously, they do NOT skimp out on the fish with the nigiri sushi!). Also, try the Texas Ranger Roll... while I'm more of a "sushi purist" with little regard for the fru-fru sweet/fried rolls, this roll with a shrimp tempura center and flame seared scallops on top is amazingly good! 2) I can't comment on the Korean bbq dishes as I have not tried any of those, but I can say for sure that the Korean dishes I have tried... the bibimbap/stone pot bibimbap, red snapper soup, and the sashimi seafood salad... are FANTASTIC! Yes, it's a small joint without the ambiance of other bigger sushi places (ie, nearby Hayashi). But, you're going to want to go to Umiya for the food... as ultimately, that's all that matters! read more

I just moved here from Bay area in Northern California. Coming from a place where Japanese cuisine is pretty refined, I was really eager to find out what Texas had to offer. We were delighted to find this place as our Sushi experience the night before was a disaster. I won't mention where, but if you scroll through my reviews then you can probably guess. When my husband and I found this place, I like the fact that it was Japanese/Korean restaurant. My husband ordered BIBIMBAP (stone pot rice with assorted veggies) and I ordered GALBI (Korean BBQ Spareribs). Both dishes were acceptable, but I think all the side dishes could have been better. Especially KIMCHEE since it was sour and over fermented. When it's THAT overly fermented, it's called SHIN KIMCHEE which most Koreans like, but some definitely prefer to make KIMCHEE SOUP out of it rather than eat it as a side dish. My mom always said, "If you go out to eat at a Korean restaurant, make sure the side dishes are good. If it's not, you know their food won't be good either." Even though I was disappointed with their kimchee, I was surprisingly happy that everything else was decent and good. I was happy to chown down on my GALBI, but wished that it was little bit more caramelized. I think I read from a previous yelper that that's what she was looking for as well, but I realize that's NOT the norm (LA or SF). When I cook at home, that's what I do, but I think it's appropriate to ASK for yours to be cooked in that fashion if you like yours to be crispy or caramelized. We also ordered some SPICY TUNA ROLL since that's my favorite. And here, I approve! My spicy tuna roll were spicy (they definitely used SRIRACHA), as it should be, and had plenty of tuna to keep me satisfied. I would highly recommend it. Judging by their spicy tuna roll, I know I'll be back to try more of their sushi/sashimi. I finally have a place I can go to near my house for my sushi fix! This place is truly great! Delicious food with high quality ingredients, wonderful service, all at a VERY reasonable price. I would venture to say that it is the best value for sushi in the Austin area. The Food: DELICIOUS! Their fish quality is paramount and their flavor combinations are classic. I've found it pretty difficult to find a sushi place that I like better, regarless of price range. Their authentic Korean dishes are also very good. It may sound strange, but I often determine whether a restaurant has "authentic flavors" based upon other patrons of the restaurant. Case in point: every time that I go to Umiya there are Korean people eating there... Must mean that it's pretty good right? My recommendations: Stone pot Bibimbob (best I've had), sushi lunch specials (all of the sushi is good). They have amazing lunch specials including different sushi plates, which include a full roll (or more), soup, and salad for under $10, and Korean specialties. The Atmosphere: Umiya definitely has a very authentic feel and I can imagine it being on a little side street in Seoul. Nothing too fancy, just a down-home, authentic, friendly restaurant. The Service: The service is solid and on-point. You can't expect a little local restaurant run just by a family to have service that rivals the Four Seasons, but the owner always remembers my order (Stone pot Bibimbob and iced tea with no lemon). Conclusion: I have been to Umiya at least 10 times and it is consistently good. There are some restaurants out there that vary in quality from visit to visit, but this is not one of those places. Fantastic. Simply fantastic Korean food in the middle of the 'burbs. I've visited Umiya a few times now and each time I leave satisfied. The banchan is tasty and I appreciate that they don't hold back on giving out dried squid and dried fish as part of the selection. I've been to some other korean joints in town where I think they're holding back on the food because they think it'll scare me off or something. Let's make one thing clear here...I finish the little bowl of dried squid before I finish off the traditional kim chi. Loooove it. If you order food to go, they'll even package up four of the banchan with your Korean entree. Awesome. The galbi was nicely caramelized when I tried it and full of flavor. I think of galbi as one of the gateway drugs into Korean food and they represent it well. I haven't tried their bulgogi yet, but that's on my list. I ordered the kim chi soup once when I was suffering a cold, and even if it didn't cure it, it cleared me out far better than chicken soup would. The only issue I had with it was that it didn't seem to have any tofu or pork in it, despite the menu saying it does. FYI: the crab miso soup is made with Krab. That bummed me out. The service is warm and friendly, and the owner is always there. I haven't tried the sushi yet. I'll leave a followup when I do. read more

Worst service I have had in a long time. I'm a former front and back of house employee and the only reason I gave two stars was that our food was decent and not messed up. Not one drink refill, alcohol refill, no pre bus, wrong soups, decent sushi. After the long wait for the drink order I started watching my watch. This was our time line Arrived at 6:55 Seated at 6:56 Drinks ordered at 7:08 Drinks arrive at 7:15 Food ordered at 7:16 Wrong soup arrives at 7:22 Right soup arrives at 7:26 Food arrives at 7:37 (21 min ticket time) Drinks empty at 7:40 Finish eating at 7:52 I had to finally ask for the check at 8:08 Never came back so walked to front at 8:15 For a $60 tab for two I expect decent service. I really don't have high expectations and am usually understanding when a server gets slammed and in the weeds. This is a small place and there really was no excuse. I'm not going back. read more

This place is right by my house, so when I saw that it was a 4 star restaurant, I blindly trusted the yelpers to lead me in the right direction. Unfortunately, I didn't read the actual reviews. Apparently most of the reviews are for Korean food, which I did not order, so be aware that my review is for the service and sushi only. I was looking to celebrate since I had passed a very important state board and had not had sushi since moving to Cedar Park several months ago. My son and I walked there and ordered sushi to go: 2 salmon rolls, 4 crunchy rolls, 2 california rolls and 4 seaweed salads. The woman taking our order appeared to be the only server working at all. She was nice enough, but her English was very difficult to understand. We made it through the transaction and she said it would be about 20 minutes (cue laughter, the crazy kind). About an hour later, just before I snapped and started flipping tables over out of sheer animalistic instinct, she brought us our food and rang us up for $75. I'm sure I broke a blood vessel in my head as I handed her my card, but I was so hungry and frustrated and positive that arguing with her in broken English would most definitely kill me, so I paid it and left. When we got home, I tore open the boxes to get to my food. Sometimes when you're starving, mediocre food will taste better than it actually is. I longed for mediocre when I ate this. The salmon was very fatty. the seaweed salad was mostly cabbage, which I have never seen in a seaweed salad before. The crunchy roll did not have any resemblance to anything crunchy. It was squishy and had some sort of brown sauce all over it. It looked like eel sauce, but didn't taste like it. The california roll was whatever. I REALLY wanted to like this place. As a Korean and Korean foodie, I feel it is my duty to spread the gospel of the great Korean places in Austin. But I can't, not at Umiya. Even though this is the only Korean place in Cedar Park, I cannot justify a 4 star. This is obviously THE choice for Koreans in CP - there were at least 4 other tables occupied by Koreans. My review is based on Korean food at dinner time. Starting with good to bad: Kalbi - pretty impressed that this place did this well. If anything, I expected this dish to be the biggest disappointment, but that was clearly not the case. Kim-chee soup - it was ok. It's a clearer soup than the more stew-y that I like my kim-chee chigae/soup to be. Taste was ok - not great, not bad. Stone pot bibimbap - again, it was just ok. If you ever been to Koreatown Plaza or Galleria Market in SoCal and ate at the foodcourt, this is about the same as that (except $4 more). Tasted like it had too much sesame seed oil slathered on not just the pot but also on the veggies and rice. Udon - disappointment, especially given this is also suppose to be a Japanese place. While I expected the noodles to be store bought (which it was) but the soup base was off. It had onion and carrot slices - something you don't typically find in an udon. Cham-pong (spicy, seafood soup) - I will never get this again. First, the noodles were udon noodles and it was way overcooked. The broth tasted like udon but added Korean red chili paste - so it was hard to tell what the soup was actually trying to taste like. And it had way too many carrot slices (I don't like cooked carrots). With the exception of kalbi, I felt the dishes were overpriced given the quality of the food. Most were in $9.95 range. The service was good (as good as it can get in terms of Korean places - read my review on Korea House if you want to know what "service" in a Korean restraunt is. I didn't try the sushi because I didn't see other tables getting it (mabye except one). To me, that signified the turnover rate for fresh fish is slow so it might not be a good idea to get it. They also had those multi-people sushi boats. While they look impressive and cool, someone told me that any sushi place that has a sushi boat is a bad sign - great/fresh fish does not need gimmick of being served on a boat. They did have really good lunch specials on the menu so food to value ratio would be much better if you go for weekday lunch. While I would still consider going here due to proximity, it will be limited only by my laziness - I probably will drive 5-10 minutes longer to eat at Hwa Yuan. read more

Four stars if it's close to you. Three stars if you have to drive. Umiya is just a few blocks from my house. It's by far the most convenient sushi for us. The Korean-style sushi is solid, but not earth-shattering. The pricing is good (for sushi) and they have some really aggressive lunch specials. The best thing they have going for them is the management and staff. Everyone I've talked to there has been incredibly welcoming and friendly. So, I don't know that I would drive very far for Umiya, but if you're in the area, it's worth a visit! read more
