First time customer. I'm not sure why I never knew of this place, as I am usually up on all the local BBQ places. Anyhow we were generally very pleased with our meal here. Atmosphere was kind of like cross between a bbq joint and a family restaurant. My wife got pulled pork dinner and I got the sliced brisket. Both were delicious, however the brisket was the best I have had in some time. Very moist and flavorful with just the right amount of bark on the edges. Only one bbq sauce provided but it was tasty. Sides were good as well, but the fried potatoes with onions were the best IMO. One thing we found odd is that they don't allow substitutions of the sides for a salad. Or substitution of a specific side designated with an entree. Not sure what that's about, so taking off one star for that. Otherwise a great little find and we will be back. read more

We were driving through the area and decided to stop in town for dinner. Right away, we loved the atmosphere. It had that cozy, small-town, family-style restaurant feel. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and the overall vibe was warm and welcoming. For our meal, we ordered the pulled pork sandwich with collard greens and the BBQ chicken fajitas. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to our expectations. Both dishes had a much heavier sauce-to-meat ratio than we prefer, which overpowered the barbecue flavor instead of complementing it. We had read so many great reviews beforehand, so we were hoping for a standout BBQ experience, but it just didn't hit the mark for us. That said, we truly enjoyed the hospitality and atmosphere, and we can see why it's a favorite stop for many. First off the owner was rude when I came in tonight to pick up my order and charged me $5.00 for 2 extra pks of his Special award winning bbq sauce . The meal comes with Corn bread , the worst cornbread we have ever had . No wait we have been here before and it was bad then as well ! The Cole slaw and beans are Not bad . Excellent food, exactly the BBQ what you want to find in a small town restaurant. I love the atmosphere as you walk in, small dinning area, clean and very friendly staff. I had the ribs, good flavor, the right amount of sauce and even though the meat was perfectly attached to the bones, it melted as soon as I bited, definitely will order them again. Unfortunately the food has changed, along with portions. My husband and I did not like the baked beans at all. We also didn't like the mac & cheese. We spent $48 for 2 meals and were disappointed. Mac & cheese was greasy because sharp cheddar is oily. Suggest using a better blend of cheeses. Also, loose the black pepper. Mac & cheese doesn't need pepper; if so, use white pepper. Black pepper makes the dish unattractive. Go back to pork and beans as the base for baked beans. Whatever original sauce was created for the beans tasted terrible. Fish portion was tiny. Looked like 1 piece was cut in half. Hush puppies were delicious. Brisket was delicious. We won't be back. Uncle Elders had been a local favorite. Sad that's no longer true. read more

I love any establishment where the owner will come sit down and chat with you if you are interested! Culpeper is a friendly town overall, but Elder is what makes this type of town really special. He takes great pride in his preparation and cares about his customers, many of whom he calls by name. But even if you are new to town or passing through, you will feel welcome here. Fresh fruit drinks were very refreshing on a hot day. I especially liked the chicken, but the BBQ pork was a very close second. The place is a little hidden, one street over from the main drag, but there is parking very close and an outdoor seating area if you happen to have your mutt, which I did. Nobody else was waiting tables or taking orders. He took food to a table, took another table their check. I will preface by saying I live in Texas and I have had a lot of really really good and well known barbecue. Aka I have high standards! We started with the fried pickles which were pretty solid. And then for dinner shared the family meal with 3 meats between 3 of us. It was a decent amount of food but nothing was spectacular. The okra was dry and over cooked. The sausage was lack luster, the pulled pork was boring and dry and the ribs were nothing special either sadly. The staff was also very slow to help us with anything and they were not busy. After a long day of hiking it was a bummer to have a less than pleasant meal experience. However I will say the place is charming and the history is absolutely awesome! DC people visiting the Shenandoah area and we took a drive out to Culpeper to get barbecue here. Well worth the journey!!!!!! Everything was outstanding! The chicken on the bone was so tender and delicious. The Mac and cheese was sooooo delicious. All of the sides were good, and of course the brisket too. this place was pretty good but a few cons. first the cons. i came in and didn't know if i should sit on my own or wait for them to seat me and they gave me the ok to sit anywhere. but they were kinda slow bringing me a menu. so i went up and got it. but then it looked like she was gonna help me. maybe understaffed? the bathroom also didn't have soap so i had to use the mens bathroom soap for a sec. the food was very good! i got fries and wings. the bbq ones. omg so crisp on the outside and juicy inside. the ranch on the side seemed so fresh as well. so much flavor in everything. i just loved everything. service was very friendly too. read more

This was our first shot at finding BBQ since moving and since guests were in town, we had our fingers crossed. We've passed here a few times while walking Culpeper and figured we'd go. We started with fried pickles and an order of the hush puppies. Pickles are nice and thin with a crisp batter/shell. The hush puppies had a crunchy outside and tender interior... Didn't dry out. We split the platter for 2 (or 3) with 3 of us. Brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork, collard greens, fried potatoes & onions, mac & cheese, and cornbread. I think the brisket and chicken stood out, but all were good. Collards were ok, the potatoes & onion were good, though I wish there were a little more, and the mac & cheese was very cheesy/buttery. Cornbread blocks were good, too. The pulled items were lightly sauced and the brisket had a good bark. All three were on a piece of toast/Texas toast. That was a little tough (I know, I know... Who eats the bread?) Overall, it was a good experience and we'd head back to try some more items. read more

Uncle Elder's brisket is fantastic! I've tried BBQ all over the country and the brisket is up there with the best of them. If you're out of town, it's definitely worth the drive to check out (and, on top of the great food, you'll get to enjoy the quaint town of Culpeper, and the VA countryside too). I can't comment on the other dishes, but based on the brisket, I'm betting they're excellent. Great lunch again today at uncle Elder's. My husband had the meatloaf which came with mashed potatoes and plenty of good gravy. He thought it was really good. I had the chicken tender appetizer along with an order of hush puppies. The chicken tenders looked just like the ones my grandma would have breaded and fried. The ambiance is terrific and the foods we had were very good. The restaurant was an old stable from the revolutionary war where George Washington stabled his and it was also used during the Civil War by both sides. Would give six stars if I could. Best BBQ for quite a ways around. Deep smoky flavor in the pulled pork, sweet/tangy sauce which is typical for this area. Ribs were huge. Recently I tried to get more information about their Valentine's day special. When I tried calling (during their open hours) no one answered and the mailbox was full so I couldn't leave a message so I messaged them on Facebook and no one responded to my message when I could clearly see that it had been read. With all the food choices in Culpeper and the surrounding area, I would not choose this restaurant. Very unprofessional behavior and they certainly didn't make me feel valued. We waited and he came to us as well. There was a lady who we gave our drink order to. She refilled our glasses quickly without prompting but never brought the water I asked for. It was just odd. Best best did I say best brisket I ever had and I'm from Texas. My taste buds were in heaven.

We stopped here while on a road trip, passing through the Culpeper area. My sister said this place had good reviews and since I always trust her taste, I was excited to give this place a shot. The inside is on the smaller side but had enough seating for a couple parties. It had a cute country feel to it with lots of little touches on the walls and decorations that went well with the wooden tables. We were pretty hungry so we ordered the feast for three and choose the ribs, brisket, pulled pork, mac and cheese, cornbread, baked beans, and potato salad. We also all three got side salads. We had to wait a very long time for our food (45 mins) and I got super hungry while waiting. It would have been nice to get our salads earlier to help hold us over until the platter was ready. When the food did come and we started eating everything was alright with the world again and my taste buds did a happy dance. All the meats were fantastic but I especially love the ribs. The meat fell off the bone like butter and they were cooked in a perfectly sweet and smoky sauce. The brisket was also a huge hit and was delicious on top of the texas toast they served it on. Each of the sides were also delicious and my favorite was the very cheesy mac and cheese. We finished all the food and left full and happy. read more
